Well, we went to Sea World at 5 pm the other night hoping to catch the Shamu Rocks show. Anyway, they announced its cancellation due to Namu (?) being ready to give birth soon. The word is that no Shamu shows for a couple months.
Just wanted to pass this along.

We were there last Monday evening. I guess she had the baby later that night. The Shamu show is off for a few months while they bond and also to let the other whales get used to the new baby.

:( Is it just the night show? We were really looking forward to it too...

I would definitely check this info. I remember about a year ago a whale gave birth in the Shamu stadium and the show was back in full a few weeks later.

I couldn't agree more. It's downright depressing.

If it's like the last time the whale gave birth, then there will be special Shamu nursing shows for about a month or so.

we went on Sunday and they have a special baby Shamu show now. It isn't as exciting as the regular show but it is not too bad. It doesn't have any big splashes, they just show the video of the birth and the video of the mothers birth (the first born at Sea World) and then some casual interactions.

I am also going to the Dine with Shamu on the 28th of Feb. I will let you know if anything is different. From what I could see on Sunday it was the same type of show as it was last Feb. when I went.

The shows have been canceled for about 4 weeks or so. They said that the momma whale is VERY protective of the newborn and no one wants to get in the water with them until she has time to adjust a bit.

Any news on the baby?

It would be a bit disappointing not to be able to see the show, but it's very good news that the killer whales are breeding successfully.

Hardly depressing!:sunny:

We saw the baby last week. It's doing really well; they're really happy about how it's doing. The shows have started up again, but they're not as impressive, stunt wise as they were before the birth. They're taking stuff slow, because the whole family is still VERY protective of the baby. It was very exciting because we got to see the new baby several times, and just that was very impressive.

Does anyone know how long it takes before shows get back to normal properly after a birth? We went to Sea World in San Antonio a few years ago and the whale show was brilliant. It will be a few months before we get to the Orlando Sea World and we really hope to see the proper whale shows.

Well even though the shows they have now aren't quite what they normally are, they are still incredible. We were really able to see the sheer force and power of those whales. I would think that they will continue to go back to what they were, probably pretty soon. But I could be wrong. However since you still have a few months I expect the shows will be pretty good by the time you get there, as they were still fantastic when we were there. Be sure to see the night one. It's lots of fun!

We saw the show on March 11th, and we saw the baby. It was so cool! It makes up for anything we "missed". Actually, we had just seen the show in early December, and the one we saw in March was not much different. I think the whales are still adjusting, but overall, especially if you have not seen it before, you won't notice anything. Maybe one or two jumps are not there, or one or two swimming interactions where a whale throws a human up in the air might be missing, but really, only one or two tricks are missing--not a whole lot. It's the risk you have anytime, actually--the whales always have the choice not to perform a trick--it's not like they can make them--the shows and tricks are based on trust and care, and the whales do what the whales want to do. :) I have seen the show other times a whale didn't perform at the highest level--but it was at the level that the whale wanted and was comfortable with--and I can live with that. Go to the show, you will still love it!

I have seen the whale show at SeaWorld in San Antonio. Has anyone else been there? Just wondering if it is likely to be similar to the shows they do in Orlando.

What is the general difference between SeaWorld in San Antonio compaired with Orlando?

The shows at San Antonio and Orlando are very similar, I don't recall much difference at all.

As far as differences in the parks in general, Orlando is much larger. The Wild Arctic and the Manatee exhibits are at Orlando, but not San Antonio. "Key West" in Orlando is a much nicer environment for feeding the dolphins, where San Antonio just had a plain, rectangular tank for dolphin feeding. San Antonio has "Lost Lagoon", which is a water park with a wave pool, slides, tubes, etc., where Orlando doesn't have this feature. Orlando also has the new "Waterfront", which I can't comment on since I haven't seen that new area yet. Both parks have a few thrill rides.

Those are the major differences in the parks in my eyes. I much prefer Orlando overall, but I San Antonio is still nice if you're in the area. (Plus, if I recall correctly, admission to San Antonio is about $12 less per day.)
