We are going to disney in June and have just been informed that there is going to be a big Summit in the Savanah/ Brunswick area from June1-13, Have been advised by the Ga tourism to use an alternate route due to the overwhelming media coverage and also Homeland security being in place. was told there will not be a hotel room in a 100 mile radius of this area. Can anyone give me alternate directions from the Gettysburg PA area. Thank you

I've taken (from Bethlehem) 78 to 81 to 85 to 77 (to Atlanta) and then down 75 to Florida and then a little bit past Ocala you can take the Florida Turnpike, right into Orlando.............its a little longer (maybe 1.5 to 2 hours longer but if you avoid traffic, could be shorter, timewise), but much more scenic and less likely to have traffic......................
I 95 is very heavily travelled and more prone to traffic jams........as you probably know..............
Good luck................:sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Wow! Good work BWMickey that's important info for everyone. I did a search and it's a G8 Summit at Sea Island! No kidding about traffic for that. Here's a link for others that are interested.

Actually this is slightly incorrect. You would take 78 to 81 but then you would take 77 south to Charlotte and hop on 85 south in Charlotte to Atlanta.:D

How bad is the trafic going to be on 95 during this time you think?

Ah, yes, I-75. The United State's equivelant of the German Autobahn.
Be careful on that road.

Probably kind of hard to say. This is one of those summits that can attract protesters from around the world. And I'm sure the security precautions will have them shutting the roads down whenever the attendees are coming and going.
I did a quick search and there are all kinds of protest groups planning their strategies on the web. It looks like the press is going to be based in Savannah and the protesters are trying to get a foothold in that town. A lot of meeting space has been booked by security details, probably as a way to keep things under control. This is probably important information for folks headed to HHI that week to know as well.

Hmmm...I wonder how much it will affect I-75 on the 13th? That's the day we're heading down to WDW (from Atlanta). Gee...maybe we'll have to leave a day early to avoid the traffic! :)

Thanks for the heads up... we'll be skirting around that area on our way to and from HHI that week.

I love a challenge:
I would THINK anyone who normally comes down I95 could come down I95 until the I85 turnoff and then follow I85 to I75 (Atlanta) to get to WDW. This will add SOME time but will let you avoid the G8 area. I think you catch I85 roughly around the Richmond/Petersburg, VA/Henderson NC area. Since mapquest kept wanting to send me DOWN I95 I used Charlotte NC as my I85 point of reference.
Richmond, VA to Orlando FL: using I95- Total Est. Time: 12 hours, 1 minute
Richmond, VA to Orlando using I85: about 16.5 hours
Richmond, VA to Charlotte, NC Total Est. Time: 4 hours, 54 minutes
Charlotte, NC to Atlanta, GA: Total Est. Time: 4 hours, 2 minutes
I75 (Atlanta) to Orlando Total Est. Time: 7 hours, 20 minutes
Picking a NORTHERN POINT and using mapquest I came up with the following routes and plans. I broke them up into different routes because a) people will ultimately have questions about where to stop and b) mapquest and freetrip kept sending me all the way down I95. They all look like they take ALMOST the same amount of time.
From Harrisburg, PA: I81 to I77 (Wytheville, VA) to I85 (Charlotte, NC) to I75 (Atlanta) to Orlando:
I81 to I77 (Wytheville, VA) Total Est. Time: 5 hours, 57 minutes
I77 to I85 (Charlotte, NC) Total Est. Time: 2 hours, 21 minutes
I85 to I75 (Atlanta) Total Est. Time: 4 hours, 2 minutes
I75 (Atlanta) to Orlando Total Est. Time: 7 hours, 20 minutes
From Harrisburg, PA: I95 to I85 (Petersburg, VA area) to I75 (Atlanta) to Orlando:
I95 to I85 (Petersburg, VA area) Total Est. Time: 4 hours, 13 minutes
I85 to I75 (Atlanta) Total Est. Time: 8 hours, 17 minutes
I75 (Atlanta) to Orlando 7 hours, 20 minutes
From Harrisburg, PA: I81 to I40 Knoxville, TN to I75 Atlanta, GA to Orlando:
I81 to I40 Knoxville, TN Total Est. Time: 8 hours, 53 minutes
I40 to I75 Atlanta, GA Total Est. Time: 3 hours, 33 minutes
I75 (Atlanta) to Orlando 7 hours, 20 minutes

Belle, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I haven't been thrilled about driving on 95 this June as it is, and the news of the summit made this even more stressful to consider. I can't tell you how happy I am to have some alternatives - more than one, even! Yay!:sunny:

The wbsite indicates that the actual summit is June 8-10. I know there is a great deal of security involved, but how likely is that to cause problems a week before? We're planning on driving down on the 3rd and coming back on the 13th. I think we'll stick to 95. Just maybe plan on having hotel arrangements in advance rather than trying to wing it.

Thanks for the heads up BWmickey. The timing of this summit is overlapping with our travel days too.
Has anyone driven down highway 1 through Georgia from Augusta to Florida? It looks like it is not so far out of the way but a small road. Is this a feasible alternate route?
Thanks.

From Harrisburg, PA: I95 to I85 (Petersburg, VA area) to I75 (Atlanta) to Orlando:
FYI...unless I'm misunderstanding something you cannot get I95 out of Harrisburg. You need to take I81...
www.randmcnally.com is also a good website for directions. Better than mapquest!
