summer airfare rates

I know this might sound like a dumb question, but this is coming from someone who only flys every other year or so. Do the prices of flights generally go down towards summer or up? I am looking for flights around the end of May. Thanks in advance to all you flight experts.

I tend to pay my more higher rates in the spring and summer. I'm sure all areas are different. I would start watching and book when you see a fare you're comfortable with. I just bought my airfare for my May trip, but still watching for my July trip.
