I am very interested to see if any other DVC members would like to see DVC build a resort on a tropical island. If you would or would not like to see a tropical DVC resort please vote. If you vote yes please leave a response as to where you would like to see one built.

They already have Castaway Cay in the Bahamas. I would like to be able to fly onto the island and stay a week using our points!

I agree, CC would be ideal (although maybe not ideal logistic wise).
It seems they could make it somewhat cost effective though with the cruise ships being there 3 days a week already, why let that beautiful site sit empty for 4 days a week?

From what I've read on the boards and through various other sources, you don't want to be on Castaway Cay at night. The insects would eat you alive. Our friends who just returned from the 7-day cruise noticed that there are huge propane fired foggers that they must be using to try to control the insect population. If DVC is going to build a tropical resort, how about St. Thomas?

CC is beautiful, and gets my vote. I doubt there is enough room there for a resort though..Island is fairly small, and could easily be wiped out in a hurricane (which they've already experienced)
Everyone we spoke with when we were on the Disney Magic last year was suggesting Disney should have a hotel option there that allowed you to stay a few days and come home on the next boat.
I wonder if DVC would ever have a DVC curise ship?? We would enjoy that!
Always nice to dream!

DVC does have a cruise ship. The Wonder and Magic. I have sailed twice on my points.
Doesn't get any better than that! Well it can get better than that. The ability to stay
on a Carribian island at at DVC resort!

I have always thought that one of the Florida Keys would be a great location for a DVC Resort.
If they put a resort in the Keys would they have to change the name of OKW resort again?

My DH's boss just got back from the Grand Caymen Islands. He said
our dollar was worth .80 cents and a alcoholic drink served in the plastic
cups at the pool wer $10.00 each. As much as I wanted to go to the
Caymen's I will see the islands when the Magic pulls into port sometime next
year!

As much as I like tropical islands, I think it would be a mistake for DVC to invest on one. Just look at the trouble they're having selling Vero.
There are already plenty of choices from other resorts and that would be a lot of competition. I prefer Hawaii, others prefer the Caribbean. Castaway Cay is very nice and the island is bigger than it looks (they only built on a small portion of it), but it would be prohibitive to build a full fledge resort there. There's no good source of water. No electricity (except generators), no good sewage, etc. It would cost a fortune to build any kind of even halfway premium resort and just manage the utilities, air-conditioning, water, food service etc. Everything would have to come in by boat. Yes they could use the Magic and the Wonder, but it still isn't cheap. (The only exception might be if they did a very primitive resort, maybe on the scale of Tree house villas at WDW, that had more of that Robinson Cruso feel, and kept it to only a dozen units, then they might have something. But then it would be too small for most DVC members to even use.)
While it might have been fun to have a DVC resort on a tropical island as one of our DVC non WDW site choices, , we'll just have to settle for having exchange privileges at many of the other non Disney resorts already available all over the world if we want to use points for a stay.
I voted no, strictly from a practical standpoint. If DVC gets into financial trouble building non-profitable resorts, we'd all pay for it one way or another.

This would be great. I'm not much hope with a suggestion as to where - the only tropical island I've been to was Jamaica on our honeymoon, which is not really a family-style island (although we loved it just as a couple). We've done Disney four times as a family, twice through DVC, DH will NOT go on a boat as in cruise ship (I've tried) but he would probably agree to just go to an island. Bahamas or Virgin Islands would probably be nice.

Living in Chicago, come winter I'd take ANYTHING remotely tropical. It has to be better than the weather here!

Could Disney realistically ever get into financial trouble? So they are having trouble-selling Vero. I never considered Vero Beach a tourist attraction. I would never consider staying at Vero. They are not having any problems with Hilton Head are they? I don’t think Castaway Cay is any place for Disney to build a resort and agree with you on all points. This is the perfect place for the Disney ships and I have enjoyed the island the two times I have been there. However, this is the perfect port of call for the Disney ships, not as a resort. Even if Castaway Cay had an airport and all the items you stated it didn’t have (electricity, water etc.) I don’t think Castaway Cay would ever attract tourists on a scale that Disney could make money. I know I would never consider staying on Castaway Cay for a week.
The resort I think would need to be on an island where anyone, not only DVC members could use the resort. It would have to be accessible via air. Yes, we have our exchanges available and I will use this option when I get tied of the cruises. However, there is nothing like a Disney owned and operated resort!

Just about anywhere in the Carribbean would be nice, as long as the resort is somewhat secluded from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the island. I like a quiet tropical vacation.

Aruba would get my vote. It hardly ever rains there. It is out of the Hurricane belt, so anyone looking to go in the late summer and autumn would not be taking a big chance on being stormed out. It's a wonderful place to relax or play. The food is expensive, but no more so than at Disney restaurants. And there are casinos there too.

I'm a no as IMHO it is a non starter, it's a nice enough fantasy but it is fantasy.
There are hundreds of decent time share resorts in most of these places. To be worthwhile for Disney there has to be a big enough profit margin in it for Disney, with so much competition it is unlikely to have enough margin for them to get involved in what, basically, would be a new venture for them. Disney is a profitable organisation but a good sized development would be 10s if not 100s of millions of $s. Both Vero and HH had very slow sales and IF any more DVC resorts are to be built I would think DLC is the ONLY non WDW site that is a possibility.
My personal reasons for voting no ( other than it is just not going to happen) is that IMHO more of those owners ( DVC Carribean) are going to want to go to WDW than people are going to want to go to the Carribean whose home resorts are at WDW. Therefore there is going to be more difficulty in trying to get less than 7 month in advance bookings. Both HH and Vero can be used as "add on" stays to a WDW holiday, a Tropical Island resort would by definition be a seperate destination there is no connection with Disney and IMHO it would be a waste of resourses. There are plenty of opportunity to swap a DVC resort for one of the many fabulous non disney resorts for those that wish to do so.
I don't see ANY advantages to the idea and plenty of disadvantages, sorry to burst your bubble.

Why not the island of Hawaii? Even Moloki? Or maybe Cataline Island?
KNWVIKING

Casbill didn't say Disney could get into financial problems,he said DVC- and he's right. DVC is a seperate company responsible for turning a profit. Why haven't HH or VB sold out ? IMO it's because it doesn't feel like Disney. DVC on an island would feel the same way. Another concern might be dealing with a foreign government where the rules could change at any time. The price of the $$ against foreign $$ could look great at the 11 month window but be terrible at the time of your trip. What about the price of airfare ? It has to be higher then flying into Orlando. Also have to deal with customs,passports,id,etc... What about tropical storms that could wash away everything.
As long as it wouldn't cost me $$$ if the resort failed then I don't care if they build one. Personally I think there are more then enough island resorts out there to enjoy right now. I don't see a need for DVC to take a chance.

I would love to see Disney open a resort on their own island, or maybe somewhere in the eastern Caribbean. I hated my recent trip to the Bahamas (Nassau/Paradise Island) and I've heard other people with the same complaints - lack of quality, lack of service, etc. If Disney had an island resort it would most likely be better run. As long as its warm and the beach is fantastic I'm there!

I think Peggy Sue was referring to an exclusively DVC cruise ship.
Aruba, Bahama, come on pretty momma....
I don't think there is a timeshare cruise ship of any kind. Someone tried to put together a condo type arrangement for a cruise ship but it never took off from what I hear. I doubt that either is workable or would be cost effective enough to make it work.

Here's an idea! How about one 7-day and one 4-day DVC-only cruise per year, on one of the existing ships, at really low points rates, to reward DVC owners for their loyalty? OK, I just woke up....I was dreaming.

CC is great but what about doing something in the Bahamas that totally smokes Atlantis? That's a cool property but imagine Disney doing up a place with that location.
WebmasterCricket
07-06-2001, 02:56 PM
I said "No".
If you take in the cost of such an undertaking and the amount of points needed to cover the vacancy rate (due to the remote location). I can't see ever wanting to go to it regardless of its location.
I believe a higher end local resort would be much more beneficial to DVC members as a whole, not to mention the actual owners of that resort. An "all grand villa" style resort on site at WDW would interest me MUCH more.
Just giving us more of the same thing and changing the location is lame. "Buy these, we'll make more" is getting pretty boring. We need something different to keep the feeling of excitement going when we have been owners for 30+ years.
Changing a theme/location only goes so far.

Mr. Cricket does have a point to. How about a Ski resort? There has been talk of that before. I wouldn't mind a tropical resort but I think something different would be nice to. There are ski resorts that we can use but one owned by Disney would be even better.

I vote "NO".
A DVC resort should be drivable (except if a European resort is built for others near those parks). Hawaii would be wonderful for a couple of visits, but not every couple of years. There are other options to use points for those vacations.
Otherwise, capitalize on the exchange program.
I also think the Keys are too far away and would require an extra day of driving to reach. I like the idea of another DVC resort where points have a much higher value than the exchange program. Vero is wonderful, but not much tourist areas nearby. But, that's OK, the ocean, pool, Disney service and the option to combine it with a few days inside the world make it work very nicely for my family.
Also considering an add-on at Hilton Head.

Just wait a few years... Communism is almost dead and there is this Island off the tip of Florida that was once a *HUGE* tourist attraction. Once Castro is gone, the people will want to rebuild their casinos and resorts. What a time for Disney to come in and create a truly great DVC property. :smooth:
gfox1

Why should Disney pay an exhorbiant price for building a resort on a tropical Island? Communism is dying. The Big Island off of the tip of Florida will need to rebuild it's already existing resorts and casinos when the old man is gone. What an oppertunity. American's have been barred from Cuba for 50 years. People are itching to get back. In 5 - 10 years we could have property in a former foe's land.

Technically, it's not really a DVC resort, since it's a part of the exchange program, but point well taken.
What I'd love to see is a resort at Castaway Cay (assuming they can take care of the bug problem) and a deal where you cruise to the island, get off, and return on the next available ship. Disney could also use the old landing strip (perhaps) to fly vacationers in.
Barring that, I go with the others that said Bermuda. I couldn't think of a more perfect combination.

I think it would be a mistake. DVC resorts should be reachable by driving from the American Continent (except maybe a future Europe resort, which would be reachable by car for those living on that continent.)
Otherwise, adding to the conciere collection is fine with me, and the hope that those point values are kept more reasonable.

What is so sacred about driving?
Sacred? Well it's not sacred as much as cost prohibitive for us and may present reduced availabilty for others as well. Besides, I think this thread is fantasy anyway, it won't happen, my understanding is that DVC has sold land that in purchased outside of Disney that it intended for DVC expansion. DVC even sold land close to Disneyland, home turf!!! There should be a DVC next to Disneyland and California Advanture before any other resort is built, and that plan was given up, and sold to Marriott. Go figure.
