I have been on and off Atkins for quite a while. I was just finishing up my 2 week induction when I began having heart palpatations on Sat. I decided to add some carbs to my diet on Sat. and Sun and the palpatations went away.

I went back to induction yesterday and now today (about 36 hrs. into induction) I am having palpatations.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I get them whenever I have not gotten enough nourishment for several days in a row. Water is also a key factor for me. Are you getting enough? I'm doing SB and I have to tell you, I have noticed them coming more frequently. However, I also notice they tend to come close to TOM which is approaching also. I would definately discuss this with your Dr. Just call him/her up and ask. You may have an underlying, undiagnosed problem that your new diet may be exacerbating.

Good luck!

GET TO A DOCTOR OR ER NOW!!

Seriously this should NOT be taken lightly and this is NOT the place for serious medical advice which you need. Heart beat irregularities are NOT a good sign and should not go unheeded because you think they are due to your diet!!!!

GO!

I've never had palpitations on atkins, but I have when chowing down on a high-carb meal after being off carbs awhile. Still, go to the dr! Get checked out!

Better safe.....

No palpitations in induction. When I started going through menopause, I had terrible palpitations though. I imagine you are too young for menopause, huh?

I get them when my blood sugar gets too low. (Atkins has done wonders for regulating it.)
Go to the doctor!

Thanks all!

I just got back from the dr. At the moment I am wearing a 24 hr. holter monitor. I had an echo down and the structure of my heart is healthy but I do have premature ventricular contractions!

They say it is nothing to worry about but if they become bothersome then I will have to go on medication!! They don't hurt but they were bothersome last night..........I had trouble sleeping but I think because I was getting nervous.......

Thanks for the advice...........

The dr. said he doesn't think Atkins had anything to do with it!!

I have a similar situation. My Doc put me on Atenolol, a beta-blocker. I still get them, just less frequently, and for a much shorter duration. The biggest side affect is low bp, and sometimes I get wiped out easily. I find if I take my meds at night, I function better in the day. The other bad thing is when I'm doing my cardio, I cant really count on my pulse, as it never really elevates proportionate to my exertion. just a few thoughts. Sometimes an electrolyte imbalance can cause these, as well.

Keep the Faith!

May I ask a dumb question here - What EXACTLY are heart palpatations?? Is that when your heart kind of thumps loudly even when you are just lying in bed? Or is it more of an irregular heartbeat throughout the day? Sometimes my hearts starts beating "loudly" for no reason so that I am very aware of it & I'm not sure why that happens.........

I was diagnosed with PVC's several years ago. I also take Atenolol. It tones them down some, but I still have them every day, several times. I have been told over and over they are harmless and I guess I have just learned to live with them. They can be very irritating though.

That is reassuring that others are living with PVC's on a daily basis. I am very aware of mine. i took Ativan for 2 nights and slept soundly. I can't wait to see the results of the 24 hr. EKG to see if the Ativan stopped or slowed my PVC's!

I hope I can learn to live with them as I hate taking any medication unneccesarily. Now that I am all rested from being up all night with the palpitations, I don't plan to take the Ativan again tonight and hope that I can sleep on my own and not be awaken with palpatations. Although, they have seem to be less today than the past few days................

Thanks again for all your thoughts
