I didn't know exactly where to put this but I am still jumping up and down after learning that Johnny has been nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. I have not been so excited about a performance in a long time!

Maybe his fans on these boards can send a strong telepathic message to the members of the Academy.
It is surely his turn to win!

I just saw this and I was SO surprised. I figured they would ignore POTC all together. I'm so glad that he's nominated. We'll have to send pixie dust from now until 2/29!

That's hilarious! I thought he was good in PotC, but there were some very accomplished acting jobs turned in this year. I am very surprised he got a nomination. YOu know what's going to be funny? His acceptance speech if he wins

Johnny Depp really earned the nomination! He did exactly what an exceptional actor needs to do for Academy recognition: he created an original, memorable, incredible character that carried an already entertaining movie. Not optimistic enough to think he'll win...but, wouldn't that bring a smile to your face?:teeth:

I AM optimistic enough to think he will win -- I never heard such raves about a performance by such very different personality-types before. Perhaps the Academy has started to realize that comedy is the most difficult genre to master. This is also the year when a Fantasy will win Best Picture, I believe.

IMHO Johnny becomes his characters -- unlike Sean Penn who always seems to be Sean Penn first and his character second. Not trying to start a debate, just sharing my biased views!

Love, Love, Love Johhny Depp. I too am so happy he was nominated. I thought he did a wonderful job with "Cap't Jack". Here's another fan who is hoping he wins!!!

It's great about Johnny Depp being nominated for Best Actor, but what I'm excited for is the sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean. They have not begun production on it yet, but Johhny Depp, Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom have all signed back on for it. Yippee!!

Here's a question for you POC experts?

My family and I have been trying to figure out why Capt. Jack cut his own hand before he tossed the doubloon to Orlando Bloom?

Because Capt Jack took a coin from the chest he was now cursed too. It means that his blood and the coin he took would also be needed for the curse to be lifted.

So he cut his hand to put his blood on the coin, and threw the coin to Turner. Turner caught that coin, cuts his own hand smeared it on his own coin and dropped both into the chest. Thus returning all the coins to the chest and lifting the curse for all the pirates.

:) I know its a little confusing. I have it on DVD and seen it many times now (not including the 3 times I saw it in the theater.) :D

I think Johnny did a wonderful job too and would love to see him get best Actor.

But, I do have a question for cindy_k or anyone else who would care to answer this about the movie. If Will Turners Dad was cursed as well, how did he die? I know the story of how he died, but my question is how could he die if he was cursed? Does that make any sense?

I'm so happy with JD's nomination! I was really surprised that PoTC has not been up for anything! How can that movie be ignored when it did so well in the theatres?!

I'm obviously not an accurate judge of acting talent, because I think that an actor should be able to believably become a character other than himself. And as someone above mentioned, Sean Penn, the favorite to win, always seems to be playing himself. Sure, he can act brooding and moody, but that's the way he is in real life. No big stretch there. But what the heck do I know--I'm just a stay-at-home mommy! I doubt the Acacemy will be mailing my ballot any time soon.

I just loooved Johnny Depp's performance in PoC. I have no idea if it was Oscar-worthy, but he totally transformed into Keith Richards as a pirate! It was such fun to watch him. To me that's what acting should be - the ability to change.

Now, if only there were an Oscar for Hottest, Best-Looking Supporting Actor...my vote would go to Orlando Bloom (sigh)! If I were fifteen years younger...and unmarried...and not a mom...I'd be SUCH a groupie! Elf ears or pirate hat, he is soooo adorable!

He said he modeled the character after Keith Richards AND Pepe Le Pew. Now that's a man with an imagination and a sense of humor!!

I could be wrong, but from what I remember of the movie, the pirates threw Bootstrap Turner with a cannon ball tied to his leg into the ocean. He sunk in the ocean and has been there ever since, I'm assuming that he was alive, just stuck under water. When the curse was lifted, he drowned in the ocean. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's right--haven't seen the movie for about 3 weeks now, maybe it's time to re-watch it. ;)

Right, when the curse was lifted, Bootstraps would have died. HOWEVER, if you watch the very last surprise scene following the credits, you see the monkey go back to the treasure cave and remove a piece of gold from the chest, thus renwing the curse. There's been some buzz that the Bootstraps character may actually be in the sequel!!!

Thanks, that was my assumption as well, but I wasn't sure! Can't wait for part 2.

I have never watched the movie to the end of the credits, I'm going to have to check that one out.

I believe that the only one affected by a new curse would be the one who stole the coin, that is the monkey. The original curse and Jack's curse were settled when the coins and the blood were repayed.
Also food for thought that perhaps when Bootstrap was trapped as a cursed pirate under water, he was able to free himself from the ocean before the end of the curse and is wandering free somewhere until the next movie!

While I thought that Depp's performance *was* excellent, my money for the win is on Kingsley. Critics are unanimously saying that HOSAF is the performance of his career, and that's saying something when the reference is to the guy who won for Gandhi.

My heart is rooting for Johnny but my head is picking Bill Murray but a girl can root for more than one:)

If the sequal is just that the monkey recursed them all, I (and alot of others) will be so disappointed.

I choose to believe that Bill had 8 years to escape the ocean and did, before the curse was lifted. I do hope that the sequal revolves around that.
