Just got back from a sneak preview of Atlantis and it is Awesome!!!! I loved it! Great Animation!! Great Plot!! Good Characters!! THIS is the animated movie of the summer. Everyone left the theater raving about how good this movie is. Its got a lot of adventure, and it shows how capable Disney is of doing this style of animation. There are several moments where you just are amazed at what they have pulled off...you get caught up in the moment...See this movie...take a short bathroom break..then see it again!!!

I can't wait to see it. thanks for the review
The Atlantis review would impress me if Ebert hadn't given Tomb Raider 3 stars.
If this was any other board, there'd be tons of off-color humor there. :bounce: :bounce:

:D I just saw it this afternoon with my 4 and 12 year old and everyone was entranced the whole movie. The visual appeal is immense... you will get swept away by the animation which is unlike any Disney film before it. I also found the variety of character voices enjoyable to listen to. Even if you don't have children, go see this one. Adults will enjoy it as an action film that is visually amazing.

I saw the 3 pm show at a theater here in Orlando. There are 6 other cinemas in this part of town showing Atlantis, this one has it in two rooms. One show each hour just about. I was in the large room and it was about 3/4 full. There were senior citizens, college kids, middle schoolers, mothers with small children, and a 7 year old girl's birthday party. I was surprised since some have been saying "Disney's trying to target teenage boys and it's going to backfire" (parphrasing, not a direct quote...) The kids enjoyed it, the adults enjoyed it. Everyone seemed pleased, and more people stayed to watch the credits after this one than at any other Disney movie I've been to. (usually I'm the only one). Well done. Three Cheers! Hip-hip, Hooray! Hip-hip, Hooray! Hip-hip, Hooray! Tomorrow I'm going to see 'John Henry' at the FL Film Fest.

Just got back tonight from seeing Atlantis and we loved it. It is totally different from any other Disney animated flick in my opinion. More adventure, thrills, the scenery was totally awesome. I really enjoyed it and so did my 4 year old daughter. Yes, it can be a bit "loud" and a little "scary" because of the close-ups but all in all, it was GREAT! Kudos!

Critic reviews aside, the proof will be in the public's opinion. Based on the impressions I've read here I'm very optimistic about the prospects of this film. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences with us. I'm so much looking forward to seeing this film for myself.

After careful consideration, I have decided that I don't have enough time to see John Henry. This makes me sad, but oh well. I'll see it eventually.

We got to see this movie on June 7th in NYC and we loved it. We couldn't wait to go see it again yesterday on it's opening day here. I can tell that I really like a movie when I can really enjoy seeing it a second time. I'm probably going to see it again later this week with some other people. This is a great movie.

I am really excited. It's a very good indication when most critics AND a critical audience, like the members oif the DIS and RADP, submit so many positive reviews.
I can't wait to see this weekend's boz office numbers.
At this time I am not too worried about Tomb Raider. Wing Commander was a much bigger gaming success, and that move was truly terrible and didn't make much money, and I doubt that Tomb Raider would be much different... or at least hope.

Just back and it was wonderful. Superb visuals, powerful sound, great story, and a plot twist that I didn't see coming. As good as I had hope, and better than I was prepared for. I hope it hits a home run.
Natalie (3.5yrs) was rivetted.
Since this was a 12:05 showing, the crowd was fairly homogeneous. Families with kids under 12 or so. Not too many teenagers. I'm sure crowds will be mixed elsewhere.
24 screens at the theater we went to. It is showing every 40 minutes or so throughout the day. The two "big" theaters had Tomb and Atlantis. The 12:05 show was in one of the medium sized theaters, the 12:45 was in the big one. Stuck my head into Tomb Raider as we were leaving, not very many people in there. But, it was a 1:25 show, still very early in the day.

Just got back from seeing ATLANTIS, and *had* to offer my two cents worth. The movie is marvelous! I saw Shrek, loved it, too--but while Shrek just feels like a one-time fling to me, I would love to see ATLANTIS several times, just to savor the visuals and the music.
Now, I just hope Disney makes enough money on the film to nudge the company brass to greenlight an ATLANTIS attraction at WDW. An E-ticket attraction based on the film would be outta sight!

We had the best luck last night. A double feature at a local drive-in theater. They were playing Atlantis and Pearl Harbor. The kids (and I) loved Atlantis, then the kids fell asleep and my wife and I got to enjoy Pearl Harbor. We enjoyed both films very much.

Yay! This is probably the first Disney film that I truly loved in a long time ("Toy Story 2" is considered a long time ago for me). I got the opportunity to see it in NYC a week before with a digital presentation (pure bliss).
The movie trailers make it seems like it's "all-action-all-the-time", but the movie at some points do have a lot of lighthearted moments. Still, it does have some NICE scenes like the...oh...I don't want to spoil it for you, you will have to see it for yourself. Voice talent was great, plot was O.K. and the animation felt smooth, yet unusual since its based on the features of a comic book artist.
Let me tell you this, Atlantis is a WHOLE lot better than "Sheik", "Sherrif", "Shrek" (whatever!:p ) in my book.
I bless the DISer that uttered those oh-so-true words (forgot who it was, I'll give you credit!):
"Disney has class, Dreamworks has gas."
"Disney has class, Dreamworks has gas."
ok....I'll bite since I'm the current "trouble maker".
Disney has class alright. It has all of it's remaining animators taking accounting class.....the one who can cut their individual budget the most is valedectorian.
How's that?
I'm sure Dreamworks has gas....their movie keeps trucking right along.

Just got back from seeing Atlantis. I thought it was great. Very well done. Disney made a movie that they have been capable of doing and to me seems that they haven't always put forth the effort to do. This movie has class and talent behind it. I can't stand an animation movie cheaply done. Atlantis has great animation. The plot is good, exciting, and interesting. The scenes were scary, beautiful, and detailed. The sounds effects fit well and were detailed as well. Very well done Disney!!!
I saw Shrek...loved it too. Can't compare the two. They are too different.

Saw the movie, Atlantis The Lost Continent, last evening. My wife and I were very impressed! Very good story line, great animation and Michael J. Fox was very believeable. I believe it will do very well at the box office however, time will tell that. Hope every Disney fan goes to this one and we can at least cut into Katzenberg's happiness!

Tomb Raider took Number 1 but Atlantis took Number 2 pushing back Shrek (Yea  ). My daughter (16) saw both this weekend. Results, both good movies but would see Atlantis again not Tomb Raider. Atlantis has a much better story line. Her review, no plot to Tomb Raider just good action sequences; but great plot to Atlantis.
Still waiting on her review of Shrek. She hasn't seen it yet and seems to be in no hurry. Oh well.
Next weekend is my turn to see them.

Hmmm....well....I gotta be honest. My family and I didn't really care for it. I was shocked at how crude and sketchy the character animation was. It made a very poor contrast with the computer animation used in many shots. The plot was full of cliches, and there weren't many laughs. It features some of the most brutal violence ever in an animated Disney film. There were bright spots--I enjoyed Don Novello's character ("Do you have anything sporty? Like maybe a tuna?") and some of the big scenes were impressive (make sure you see it on a big screen). But honestly, I think it lacks the Disney magic. And I just can't get over that cruddy, TV-quality character animation. What's with the triangles for fingernails? It's probably the most like Hercules (which was funnier).
The "Triangles" are a trademark of the comicbook artist who worked on the film (forget the name) I have talked to some Comicbook/Anime fans who thought the animation was the best Disney has ever produced.

I was prepared to be let down when I went to see Atlantis - My two sons (11 and 13) and I had just gotten out of Tomb Raider, which was fun, and decided to take the time right then and there to see Atlantis. I had heard mixed response to Atlantis' drawing style and that it looked TVish.
Well, here's my opinion -
Atlantis, I think, breaks new ground in its visual style - it is a bit more blunt - the characters look like a comic book come to life, but that is the style they were going for. The animation is still very fluid and the colors are amazing. The characters move naturally and the action sequences are in an explosive style (pun intended) that works very well for the story.
I am reminded of reviews I read about the original 101 Dalmations - where they used Xerography extensively - a very sketchy style that what interpreted by some critics and audiences as "underdrawn", yet sets a wonderful, individual style for the film. I think this film (Atlantis) does the same. I hope whatever success this film has encourages the high mucky mucks not to cut back on animation so much.
One note, however. I wonder if the character who smokes could have been even funnier if she were trying to find substitutes for smoking because she had to give it up due to the explosivenees of compressed air or something. She could be chewing on a rivet, or gnawing on a carrot, ar something. Not a big deal, but the smokind thing looks like they're asking for criticism over something unecessary.
Loved the film - go see it!:bounce:

Finally got to see Atlantis tonight with my wife. Wow. This was the most risk-taking animated feature I've ever seen from Disney. The detail was amazing, and the characters were very interesting, and the whole art and animation was, as my wife said, "cool."
My only beef was with 'Mole'. Couldn't understand a word the guy said.
Kida & Milo & Vinnie & Sweet made the movie, IMHO. They were hilarious and seemed like real actors.
By the way, we both enjoyed it more than Shrek. Just my two cents.

I'm glad you posted your honest opinions of the violence. My cuz went to see it with her just turned 4yr old daughter and wished she hadn't. Too violent. My 9 yr old doesn't like all the blow'em up stuff and doesn't want to see it because she heard it was scary. She's sensitive to those types of things. The Pirate ride scared her to death! I didn't realize it got pitch dark and dropped a few feet in the beginning. She didn't trust us the rest of the trip on rides!
We like happy movies so I think we'll stay away from Atlantis where everyone gets killed!

just saw atlantis for the second time
Anyone familiar with an old MTV cartoon show called liquid tv that had an animated short called AEON FLUX the blonde chic in Atlantis looked just like the girl from that show. Just like her. Id bet the animator is from that show.
The storyline was good and it flowed. unlike shriek

Everyone does not get killed. In classic Disney fashion, only the villian(s) die. Yes, I wouldn't take a sensitive child to this film, but it is rated PG, so I'd be careful about kids anyway. You might try previewing it by yourself (assuming you can find the time;) ), but I didn't find it any scarier than the climax of The Little Mermaid.
I thought Atlantis was a lovely, almost mythic, storyline. You have good guys, and bad guys, but the line isn't as clear as in a Fairy Tale. And I enjoyed that complexity.

Don't forget that Kida's father is essentially beaten to death by Rourke. I found this to be an extremely ugly scene. Also, plenty of Atlanteans die in the very first scene of the movie.
I agree that other Disney movies are also violent--it is, unfortunately, something we sometimes overlook because we are so grateful for the absence of other offensive content.

Boy! Took me awhile to get to this board again!! Anyway....I did finally see the movie and I thought it was OK. It would have been great if they have elaborated about how Atlantis went down beneath the ocean and exactly what they saw and discovered down in the ocean. I guess I wanted more reality facts more than the story. Maybe I should have educated myself first about how Atlantis become before seeing this movie for me to appreciate it. I'll give it a B.
i am going to see it again! i loved it

We just watched Atlantis with our 3yr. old. We enjoyed the movie but to honest my wife and I agreed that we enjoyed Shrek more. It may have been more of the humor in Shrek that I liked but I would rather watch Shrek again over Atlantis.

Just saw 'Atlantis' the other night! As soon as the movie finished, all I could manage to say was "Wow!" I have to admit, for the first few minutes I was really doubting that the film would be that wonderful... But as soon as I got used to the animation style, I loved it!
Michael J. Fox makes a great Milo and my mother was surprised to see that some guy from 'Star Trek' did the voice for the Atlantean king. (I'm not much of a 'Star Trek' fan... *grins evilly* 'Star Wars,' on the other hand... As you might be able to tell, I constantly fight with my parents about 'SW' and 'ST' and which one is better... Heehee!) I do have a question, though! I got my 'Star Wars Insider' magazine today, and it says that Mark Hammill (Luke Skywalker) did a voice for a character in 'Atlantis,' but didn't list which character. I didn't see his name in the main credits, either. Maybe I just missed it?
Anyflip, I really, really, really liked the movie! Archaeology and ancient history have been two of my biggest interests throughout life and when I was in fifth grade I went through an "atlantis" phase, when I had to read every book available about "atlantis." (Of course, I think I only found two books in the elementary school library which mentioned "atlantis," so that kind of killed that interest... *laughs*) But, anyhoo, I was determined to find the place myself when I was a kid! The movie brought a lot of those memories back to me!
As someone already pointed out, the sound was phenomenal. I don't remember when, but at one point in the movie, I nearly jumped out of my seat because there was a very loud, very unexpected explosion. *grins* And the music is just soooo gorgeous during parts of it! I've been looking for mp3 files of some of the songs, but have been quite unsuccessful, so if anyone knows of a place to find them, do tell! Napster's a piece of crap at this point, in my opinion.
Ummm... What else? Has anyone here ever played the 'Monkey Island' computer games? Because there were points in the movie where Milo just totally reminded me of Guybrush Threepwood. (I think it was the "bumper cars at Coney Island" line that sparked the connection... Sounded like something Guybrush would say!) Also, anyone know of the movie 'Stargate?' It's one of my favorites, and so much of the story reminds me of that movie.
The only complaint I have is... WHO SAID THAT IT WOULD BE A BIG SURPRISE WHO THE BAD GUYS WERE? *grumbles* Personally, I thought it was pretty obvious from the start. Here I was, expecting some humongous surprise about who the bad guy was, and you all let me down... :) Oh, and there were times when there were so many characters talking at one time or the lines were going by so quickly that I just couldn't keep up with things. (Maybe I'm just slow, but I think someone else posted about that, too... I hope I'm not just slow! *giggles*)
So there you have it... My review of 'Atlantis.' (Most of which, unfortunately, is probably horribly off-topic! Heehee...)

We finally saw it yesterday and I agree! It was GREAT! We loved it. It moved fast, but I didn't think it was too fast. I also thought the story was pretty well put together. There are only so many stories and only so many archtypes. I was pleasantly surprised after reading a lot of negative stuff about the movie here. One thing I liked a lot was that they didn't play the "Milo, you brought these people here and betrayed us...." game. Instead of throwing trite "twists" into the story they just told the story.
