Seems to be that they are in discussions so US pulled their flights. They may be back but in the meantime there are plenty of other places to buy US tickets.

Why would anyone use Expedia, when you can use the airlines website or toll free number and avoid Expedia's service charge?

Because there are times when the fare is cheaper on Expedia even after paying the service charge. The USAirways website is not the easiest to navigate either when researching prices.

I've never found that to be the case. I'll use Expedia to check prices of different airlines, when I find a flight I like, I go to the airline website and it's always cheaper.
USAirways website might not be the easiest, but once you know which flight you want it's not that hard to use.

I fly quite often for work and USAirways is the carrier I usually use. I am preferred with them and am very familiar with their web site.

I don't know where you fly but USAirways website doesn't always have the cheapest fares. I use Orbitz and Expedia to book my USAirways tickets quite often.
