View Full Version : Annual WDW SOLOS Meet?

As stated on the recent "<I>Are You A Single WDW Fan</I>" thread - The idea of a single/solo meet at WDW sounds appealing. Maybe if some of us worked on it we could even do it on a grand scale . . . like a single/solo, mini (a long weekend?) version of <I>Mousefest</I> . . . annually. How many are out there? Even with as few as 25 we could probably put something together - a few group meals and special meets at the parks and resorts(?). If we had over a hundred (I have no idea how many solos are out there) we could plan something more substantial. Is anyone interested? If so, any time of year that might work best? Any other input? Is this idea too far-fetched to pursue? ::MinnieMo

Wow, what a great idea! As I prepare for my second solo trip (Nov. 29-Dec. 6), I find myself reaching out and trying to locate other solos (or folks who might be solo just for the day, as their significant others are at conventions or some other such thing). But the idea of a time when solos could go, congregate, try and find someone to do a park with, have a meal with... what a fantastic idea. Sign this solo traveller up!

:cool:I think it would be something worth looking into.
It is unusual for me to get to WDW two years in a row because of the distance. But if it happened that a group were meeting during the time I would be vacationing there I would enjoy meeting other single/solo WDW travelers, even if it were just for an hour or two.
I wish I could be of more help, but I am having enough trouble helping to organize our 8 member family get together in Aug. 04
There was a thread on the community forum that had to do with single DIS'ers and maybe some of the folks who posted on that one would be interested.

Sounds like lots of fun to me. I work in a school, although I can sometimes finagle a day or two away during the year.

Thank you for the replies! Let's see how many other responses we get to this thread. If there is enough interest, we'll see what we can put together. As I said, with even a small number of solos at WDW at the same time, we could plan a few special meets. If we have a lot of interest we could do something on a larger scale.
I live an hour from the parks and am willing to do a big portion of the planning "work" for an "official annual solo meet" if needed, but help is always appreciated ;). All solos please chime in with your ideas and suggestions!
Meanwhile, for those visiting <I>soon</I>, if you're looking for someone to do lunch with to avoid feeling uncomfortably solo for a sit-down meal at the parks, I am frequently available. ::MinnieMo

I will be in WDW from December 3 to the 14, 2003 and staying at All Star Music. Most of my meals are sit down meals, and for most of them I will be eating alone. Single and unattached, I do that frequently.
I think a solo meet would be great. I'll be attending several meets with people from two boards of which I'm a member, and will be very busy from about December 3rd to the 7th.
Good idea!

I'm a single forty something mom heading to WDW 11/19 - 11/27 with my two kids (9 and 12). I'd love to plan a trip sometime in 2004 without my kids and meet other single Disney lovers. It's hard to find other Disney lovers here in Colorado. I can't wait to get to the WL in 20 days! It's starting to snow outside my house right now and I'm ready for a vacation.

my next solo trip is apr18-may02/04. i'll only get to wdw for the one trip next year:( but if a solo dis meet happens during those two weeks, i'm there::yes::
kathe:D
I'm definitely interested, but as mentioned in the other thread, it's difficult to impossible to get away from the office much before the 15th of the month. If the planets are aligned correctly and I hold my tongue just so and cross my eyes, it may be possible to get away by the 10th (depends on when EOM falls--it helps when it's close to the weekend!). Apart from that, the month of January does not exist on my calendar (YE, FYE and related stuff in addition to the usual accounting stuff). And this desert rat almost became a blob on the pavement in Orlando's August humidity this past summer! But if it's the best time for everyone else, I'll carry my fan and try not to whine!
Taswira, when planning dates, don't forget that those of us in the western states have to allow a travel day on either side of the dates we would be at WDW. Our flight in August left at the uncivilized hour of 6:30 a.m. to arrive by 2:30 p.m.! The flight wasn't that long--just had to deal with three time zones!
Thoughts for meet locations: some in parks, some outside (DTD, Boardwalk, resorts, etc.). That would permit those who want to economize to be involved without having to buy park tickets for all of the meets. Perhaps a meal offsite (it sounds as though you're familiar enough with the area to select a good place). If meets are planned around meals, try for places with fairly varied menu selections (I'm a picky eater and others may be vegetarian or have severe food allergies) or select different types of cuisine (anything from basic fast food to ...--your imagination can provide the other options!).
It's EOM, so I need to get back to work!
Happy Halloween!

Hi......
I just got back from a fantastic two week stay at Disney, but what the heck.......keep me posted my time is very flexible.
I would love to meet up with others that have the same feelings toward Disney as I.
There is just something about the place that just keeps me going back every year.
Keep me posted on what is decided........hell I've only gone on eight solo trips so far.......

As much as I'd like to do this tomorrow, we should probably plan this out aways to accomodate people that have already taken this year's vacation or need a bit of time to line things up.
Since this will be a solo event I think we should avoid peak times in the summer. It is SO much more enjoyable when the heat and crowds are not at peak levels.
During F&W would be great except that is is TOO FAR away.

I agree completely, arminnie. This thread is a "feeler" to determine if there is enough interest for the not-too-distant future, but it would at least be next year. I'm thinking late spring or sometime in the fall(?). Summer IS way too hot and crowded! So keep the comments and suggestions coming, folks.
Meanwhile, this adult/solo board is a great place to find other solos for meets prior to our proposed WDW Annual Solos Meet.

I'd be interested. I will suggest that we stay away from the month of March. I've been told by my cast member friends that it is a nightmare each weekend in March. I would suggest something in late April (after Easter) and early May. It's not to hot or cold and the crowds are fairly light (compared to the summer).
I would need at least two months heads up so I can coordinate with the boss.

Hi solos...
Cash and I'll be at WDW a BUNCH next year, as I posted on the first stub of this thread...don't remember what it was called... but January, May, and December of next year will see me and Cash, Service Dog Extraordinaire, riding the rides, attracted to the attractions and feeding at fooderies....let's meet sometime! :wave2:

I'll have to refer to the Guests with Disabilities brochure for guidance on whether or not Cash would be permitted to venture into "Space" or, if that attraction is not addressed in the current edition, find a CM who works in that attraction. I know that Space is one attraction I really want to try out but, unless Cash can come along, I'll have to park him with someone outside...EEEEK, like handing off the keys to your Jag to a teenage parking valet. NO WAY!
This whole WDW vacation thing is really going to test Cash's appetite for adventure but, as the permanent navigator in my little car, he has shown bravery and fortitude beyond all expectations....should do fine at WDW and the two cruises scheduled next year.....:Pinkbounc

I know what you mean about handing off a Jag! I really don't think there would be room for Cash in the MS pod unless he sat in a seat with the restraint down as the rest of us do!
If Cash gets used to me being around, MAYBE they would let you take him all the way to the loading area and let me stand with him by the back wall there and wait for your return(?) - If you <I>wanted</I> to try that. The ride itself is not visible from that area so he would not see you "moving" or anything. I know that would still be "handing him off," but not to a complete stranger like a CM . . .
Some years ago I spent a great part of my life working with animals - dogs, cats (including exotic), horses, bears, apes, even snakes. I never met an animal I didn't get along with, but at the same time I understand the bond that develops between a person and their assistance animal that is not conducive to the intrusion of an "outsider."

I think this is a great idea. Since I just returned it would be nice to plan something a few months down the road.
Late April or early May is nice. The Flower & Garden Festival is going and the crowds aren't too bad. October/November of next year is also good for those that want to catch the Food & Wine Festival.
Since this is a singles event we can probably avoid the peak times of school vacation season and Holidays.

After reading several descriptions of how Disney sends us into space I am almost certain that Cash would not enjoy the experience, but I would hate to miss it! He has been trained not to accept commands from others (sort of Pavlovian theft -proofing) but those who have a firm will and experience with obedience-trained dogs (like one of the vet techs I know) have had some success changing his mind about what he thinks he ought to do in a given situation. I cannot guarantee that he will not turn into the "wild" dog I first adopted if he should suddenly decide that the situation is not safe... for me, for him, or... He can be a stubborn guy and he is very big.

Probably be better for him to be far enough away so as not to hear me shout, scream, or whatever....If I leave him parked, the best strategy would be to have him surrounded by several people who pet him, talk to him, and distract him...like in a line. I would love to meet you and other DIS members...this is the first situation that I have found that being solo is a problem....No Space Mountain, TOT, etc., for Cash, but it might work...somehow, to park him with multiple friends.
First we work on a meet.....

Hi Shari!
Are you the same "Shari" that I met with Poopie in January 2003 at Sea World for a day?
Hey, I'd love to be a part of a WDW Solos Meet! I like the idea of it being an annual event because I know that I won't make it back to Florida until maybe 2005 at the earliest. I'm living/working in Japan right now and will be lucky to get one trip back to the States in 2004 to see family. But 2005 and 2006 will be much more flexible for me.
So keep me in mind when making your head counts! I'll keep in touch, too!

I agree it would be fun to have a single meet. I'll be heading solo to WDW 11/20 - 12/2 and while I enjoy my own company, it is nice to have someone to talk with while waiting in lines, having dinner and waiting for evening shows.

Even though I live here, I'd be interested in participating in something like this. I'd suggest F&W fest for a good time frame - usually good weather and crowds tend to be fairly light. Plus, visiting the F&W kiosks is a fun way to get to know people. If done in October, MNSSHP could be an option as well. :)

Hey-- count me in! It takes me about 30 minutes to get down there, and I'm off most Mondays/Tuesdays and every other Sunday. I only got a seasonal pass this year, so no high-season park-hopping for me. I think F&W Fest is the perfect time for solos... a very social and "adult" (with the heart of a child) atmosphere.
Videogal-- I would LOVE to hang out with you and Cash! Dogs & Disney are two of my biggest loves, so I've often joked about trying to pass off one of mine as a service dog so they could go experience WDW w/me (good luck with that; they are SPOILED). Anyway, I'm a vet, so I hope you'd feel comfortable having me as one of his sitters. :earsgirl: BTW, I've ridden M:S and NO WAY would he be able to ride it; I'm sure he won't mind.
Somebody PM me if you set something up since I don't come to this board all that often.

DH and I already have ressies to go 5/23-5/30. Although technically it's not solo, he'll be golfing all the time, so really I'll be solo all day. My truly solo trip is always sometime during the Christmas/New Years break from school, but I don't know the exact dates yet for next year. But definitely, 5/23-5/30.
Came to this board today as I was beginning to think of a solo trip for 2004 and this sounds like a great idea to me. Put me down. I already have a ressie with my family for April, but I always book a solo for myself. I am fairly flexible, so keep me posted!!!

Happy 2004, everyone!
Has any more thought gone into an annual solos meet? I'm planning a spring WDW trip, and want to go during value season (I'm cheap!) during April or May for the Flower & Garden Show, avoiding holidays. I need to coordinate my timing with others in the next two or three weeks and nail down the dates.
The Food & Wine Festival in October will be regular season, which isn't too bad for room rates if decent AP discounts are availalbe. If the solos meet(s) are scheduled for that time frame, it might be nice to coordinate the date(s) with the other meets that occur at that time.
I'll check back for comments, or PM me.
Thanks,

What about having it coincide with Mouse fest?
taswira
02-13-2004, 08:54 AM
That could be a possibility. My concern would be that there are already so many meets and activities going on during <I>Mousefest</I>, and many of us here are also members of other boards and trying to attend many events that each sponsor. I'm just not sure there would be <I>time</I> then to do more than one quick meet and go our separate ways.
Plus, if it did not coincide with <I>Mousefest</I>, it would give those who can not attend at that time of year an opportunity to participate. But if we want it to have a reasonable number of participants, it <I>would</I> be wise to open it to all <B>adult solo</B> members of <I>any</I> of the Disney message boards, and not <I>just</I> the DIS. We'll see . . .
Nice suggestion though. ;)

Thanks! diane

Hi, Gary! Haven't seen you on the <I>MagicalDisney Community</I> in AGES! Good to see you at least posting on the DIS though.
You should get a <I>Pal Mickey</I> and come to our big <I>Pal Mickey Reunion</I> in May! :teeth:
So I think we need a "refresher" here. We need to find out which month the <I>most</I> solo adults plan to be at WDW. And, uh, let's try to avoid hurricane season. That can <I>really</I> put a damper on having a good time here!

I love this idea! I would take solo trips all the time, but I feel like I need a "reason" to go. A solo meet would be perfect for this single 27 year old.

Okay here's my refresher. I'm taking my Dad on a cruise that leaves April 30, 2005 so I could arrive to Disney a day or two before that. I'll also be back for the Pal Mickey Reunion May 13-15.
It's hard to find days that work for everyone, I know. But if any of these dates work for multiple solos, then I'd love to meet.

well, i've decided i need to be home for mother's day, so my trip will probably be either apr24-may7 or may9-may22. it will depend on airfare though...it is too early to predict what rates will be yet.

Hmmm . . You know I'll be at the Pal Mickey Reunion (http://www.palmickey.net) of course. Now if I could just talk my mother into letting me take her on that April 30 DCL cruise . . .
I did not re-book while onboard last week (There is a first for everything, I guess!), but anything is possible. :teeth:
I think late April to mid-May is sounding good for a WDW SOLOS MEET.

Well, if you are the "firefighter" who has horses and is also on the MDC forums (although not active there lately, huh?), you are welcome to join me at the Pal Mickey Reunion. I will have version 2 by then and will have a "spare" Pal. I think my mom plans to participate in one day's activities, but not all, so . . . .
Anyway - Back to an Annual Solos Meet - It looks like May (but not the 13-15 of the Reunion) will work for several people. :teeth:

Great, katypop! We'll keep it within those dates then. :teeth:
Maybe we could schedule some solos meets (group dining, attractions, PI, etc.) for a couple of days before and a couple of days after the Pal Mickey Reunion. Or we could have it coincide with the Reunion dates, but those of us participating in the Reunion would have to work around that and be limited in what we could attend.
What do you think?

Any solos up for a meet in May, just say the word!
Some of us will be at WDW for Pal Mickey Reunion 2005. I'll be at Animal Kingdom Lodge the 12th through the 15th for that. But I'm local anyway and will be around except for 3/3 to 4/5 and a week in June. If there are enough solos who want to party at the parks (so to speak), maybe we can plan something on a small scale and figure out something more organized for later in the year or next year. Anyone?

Hi all,
I'm hoping to be there for a long weekend or a week starting 5/6/2005.
I'd also like to go back in October for MNSSHP and F&W followed hopefully by an early December trip.
I'd love to meet people who love WDW enough to go on their own.

Just to guide this along... I picked names out of the May solo list and combined it with this list. If you don't want your name listed here just pm me & I'll take it out. I had a real hard time figuring out when the biggest group of people would be there so then I figured I'd print the results...
And I'd like to suggest that if this is going to be an Annual Event (is this the second Annual?) maybe an Annual starting point would be good. MGM has a lot of good places to meet and be able to chat....like the Tower of Terror. It would be great if this could actually grow into something. I always thought there should be a Disney Solo's group (where Duo's would be welcome of course.
The list isn't complete...I'll still have some poking around to do to hunt down posts and combine them into the list. Any Comments you see are just things that struck me from your posts. Also I'm surprised to not see more "Project X" listings...although I forgot about this m'self.
Jenn
PS... If someone could tell me how to stop my list from squishing together if the spaces are blank I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for compiling the list! :teeth:
Yes, I am local but you can change me to available ANYTIME. I'm a wildlife photographer so travel occasionally, but aside from that I am generally at WDW.
The only reason I was asking about May is because so many seemed interested in that month. This year our Pal Mickey Reunion is in May so I'll be staying on property, but that's not an issue for me since I'm local. Any month is fine with me. :)

My dates have changed a little, but I'm still game for a meet in May. I'll be there May 4-6 as a solo, and will be back May 10-14 with the Dad in tow. And hey, he's a "solo" too so maybe he'll join in too. Or better yet, I've never been above ditching him to serve my own needs. :teeth: And he knows that.

Soooo...
Any thoughts on a date? I'm still not firm on my trip but if I can get comfortable with the drive who knows...weekends become quite possible. I sort of feel like 7 hour drives should go with 3 day weekends.
In looking at my chart I see between 5/6 & 5/22 seem to be a good time frame. Perhaps a better way to go might be to designate May as a Solo Meet month, pick different meet locations for the same day of the week. Use semi interactive locations where it would be easy to converse as a starting point.

Well, I stayed up too late and United offered me a 15% off fare through ORbitz. There was some nonsense about an orange flag and coupon but it gave me a fare nonstop Denver to Orlando...so I am going! I just can't remember the date I've booked!!!! I think an email will tell me tomorrow, but it is after May 5 and probably Saturday May 7 for a little less than a week.
I'll be solo AND hoping to have my first Welcome Home as a DVC member IF I get my contract closed and if there are any ressies for that time!!!!
I go a little crazy when I'm on the computer late at night...but it will be fun if I can pull it together. Will post accurate days tomorrow and hope I can be added to the list!
Thanks...

Well, my solo trip has turned out to only be partly solo

I'd like to see how many are interested in getting a pontoon boat for Illuminations Cruise. It can hold 10 adults (plus 2 kids) and costs about $140 without tip.
This would be a great MEET and we could head to Jelly Rolls afterward!!
Please post or IM me if you are interested!

I think the idea of picking one day a week in May to designate as a meeting place for solo Disers would be great. That way we all know where to go and when.
Seems to me that it would be very easy to meet people and talk at a place in DTD. If we say the marketplace side somewhere, then people won't have to use a ticket just to do the meet. And there are plenty of places to sit and chat with food/drinks. Maybe we should get something firmed up in terms of day of the week, place, and time?

Looks like I'm not going to make it in May. Took an impromptu trip in March and its Mom's 55th college reunion in mid-May (and she wants me to go). Plus I might be meeting friends in mid-June in Disney...given that I live in Atlanta I don't think I'm up for two 7 hour trips on such a quick turnaround.
But picking a date is a good idea! I know a bunch of people had dates they didn't want to do but thought they could do something close to it...soooo....pick one someone!!!
