View Full Version : Is food a major part of your trips?

A comment on another thread reminded me of a conversation I had recently with a friend. (We are both losing weight at the moment.)

I find it hard to plan a trip or day out without associating it with the food I'll have, and the food IS a major part of the fun to me!

e.g. a day out in London means TGIFridays
a trip to the zoo means a picnic
car trip anywhere means coffee and doughnuts when we
stop

and it doesn't stop there, mention Christmas and I'm thinking mincepies, marzipan and Baileys (not at the same time!), birthdays and it's chocolate cake, even coming home for church on a Sunday I have to stop myself reaching for the biscuit tin.

I'm doing OK eating healthily at the moment and I know all the above foods are allowable in moderation, but I just wondered if anyone else felt the same link between occassions and food.

Ya in a sense Id say yes
A vaca to WDW means Chef Mickey's, O'Hana's, etc - I usually plan 1 at least 1 sit-down meal/day

A cruise on the Magic means Palos, Lumiere's, AP, Parrot Cay, and a daily frozen tropical drink!
But now when I look at the menus Im thinking ahead to what would be the best food items for me to choose. And so that I can eat at those meals, during the day Im planning on lots of fruits & veggies.

I have always thought that the problem with us overweight people is that we really enjoy eating. I never thought all of those Sun dinners and football games and trips to the zoo were complete without food. I too start planning meals as soon as I start planning any kind of excursion out of the house. My sister who is thin and always has been, just dosen't think about food in the same ways. I think she dosen't "enjoy" the food. I mean she eats three meals a day, but by no means ever thinks about going out to dinner next weekend and what she will have for desert. So I know that I'll think about the food, so I'm just trying to think about good foods. Just trying to keep in mind those struggles to get it off. I mean who can really eat ice cream every day of their WDW vacation?? My kids can, but I just can't. So I know next time we go I'll have an ice cream, just not every day. Does this make sense??:confused:

Unfortunately YES, food does play a major part in vacations and days out. I'm learning (slowly) to substitute meals I would have ordered in the past with ones that are healthier or at least healthier that what I would have chosen to eat 3 months ago. I'm also doing a better job with portion control but I do slip sometimes.

Not anymore. Since being diagnosed with diabetes a few weeks ago I have done a complete turn-around as far as food is concerned and I am "eating to live" rather than "living to eat." :)
Oh, I'm not saying that I'll stick rigidly to my new food plan when I'm on my next cruise, but I will make better choices.

A couple nights ago I took my DD out for dinner for her birthday, as her DH was working. She chose Bennigan's and I knew ahead of time that was where we were going so I "planned" for it and just ate about 450 calories total for breakfast/lunch so I "saved" most of my calories for dinner. We ate early (6:00) and I brought half my dinner home with me, skipped salad/rolls and opted for dessert but still stayed well within my calorie limit for the day and I felt good about it. Food is not as important to me as it used to be and I feel really GOOD about that way of thinking. :)

In making my plans for this upcoming trip to WDW, a lot of the planning revolved around where I wanted to eat and the food experiences I wanted to have.....some 'traditional' must dos and new things to try. Usually about a month out from my birthday, I start thinking about where I want to have birthday dinner! And when friends want to meet for a movie I always ask if we'd be going out to eat after (tho part of that is from living alone and wanting to take the opportunity to socialize over a meal and talk about the movie).

Now that I'm following a weight loss plan, the 'thinking' about food doesn't go away.....it's even stronger. The shopping, preparing (doing more cooking at home, which is good), and checking out restaurant menus on line. I still envy those people who 'forget' to eat, or 'don't care' where we go, or 'just have whatevers left in the fridge'.:hyper:

As Camping Griswalds says, I'm just trying to think about the good foods!

Yes, food is a major part of everything I do. I love food, that is why at one point I weighed 218 pounds. I have learned a healthier way of eating and that is what helped me to lose 45+ pounds, but I still love food and I do still indulge at times. I think my indulgences have contributed to my losing weight slower than most, but for me, if I don't indulge every now and then, then I would not be able to stick with my healthier way of eating for the long haul.

Food and meals are one of life's joys, in my opinion. Things taste good, make my body feel good, and being with family and friends during meals is one of the nicest things I can think of.

Now that I know the right things to eat, it's even better. If I choose to indulge, I know that I will eat more sensibly the next few days. Not much guilt in that!

When we travel, part of getting to know another culture is sharing their food. I love to travel, and I love to eat! I try to do both safely and with maximum enjoyment!
