$5 to just talk to them about paying $14/pp! That is absolutely nuts! Plus, they have the info on the auction for how to access the DVC Members only pages including the password! Wow, that is a big load of you know what

:headache: Well I just sent our friend Amber Howey a nice message that maybe it wasn't cool to list the website and the passwords on a public forum! That maybe they were for members only and that the reason we have a Members Only website was because it was JUST FOR MEMBERS! I can see someone asking for them, like say here, but to publicly publish them the wasy this person did!! WOW!

I think that is terrible! Certainly not in the spirit of DVC. I personally think that member should be penalized somehow especially since they posted the owners web site and password.

Why can't this be reported to member services? Something needs to be done. This is suppose to be a secured site and this person has invaded our privacy. I still can not believe that this person had the gall to post it. She could have sent them to this website to use the point calculator.

I know giving that user id with a password is going to tick a lot of people off, but when I think about it, I'm really not sure why the dvc page even bothers with the user id and password. It isn't like there is any individual information there. I think it is just a sales gimmick for DVC - when you buy in you get access to this special web site. Other than that, I can't see why they wouldn't let the public look at it. You'd think that potential buyers might be interested in the type of information they have there, which is basially just a members guidebook, with the point charts, different options, etc. Why limit that if you are going to be upfront with what you are selling (which DVC absolutely is)?

Back in the early 90s I was able to have a user name and ID at espn.sportszone.com that remembered who I was - it was an ID for bulletin boards, etc. It remembered stuff about me through cookies. When they became go.com that same user name and password followed me to all the Disney sites. I open one up, it tells me welcome by name. I go to the disneyclub.com site, it knows I am a member. I go to disneystore.com, it knows to give me a 10% dc discount, etc. Why on earth can't the dvc web site know who I am, let me check my points or reservations, whatever. Without that sort of individualized stuff the user name and password is pretty lame, imho - there really isn't any reason for it the user name that I can tell. Why is it there?

DR

PS this guy is a wild to think that someone is going to pay him $5 to rent his points for $14 - comparing a weekday night on points to the cost of staying rack rate!

I'm not sure what legalities have actually been breached here, but it is certainly unethical for this "entity" to publish access rights to material that is funded by and prepared for the consumption of the DVC membership. Ok, it's not like its a really secure username and password combination, but still. :)

I've mailed member services with the link to the auction. If it is in fact an issue for DVC, at least they know about it to send in the attack lawyers.

Someone with an e-bay account might want to see if this falls under their Intellectual Property policies.

I wouldn't worry to much about the password info. There really is nothing sacred on that site and I know it is given out more often thaan it should be. As for posting it, I agree that is wrong, but I have no doubt like other times in the past, the mods will take it off.

As for the rental price, I am surprised they would try that on this site, since people are smarter and we have the rent/trade board. It does happen on e-bay though.

Well I received a response from the seller to why she thought fit to list the members only password - her goes:

In a message dated 10/1/2003 1:36:49 PM Eastern Daylight Time, hotmail.com[/email] writes:
Don't write me complaining. I'm selling my points because I can't use them.
So here's an idea. Shut up and mind your own business. Thanks Jack A.....

I bet if we all contacted her, she would realize how wrong it was. And yes I know there is no real info there, but its the principal of it!!

Sorry for the edit - I didnt realize the person actuall e-mail address was posted, its one thing to contact thru e-bay, but not directly. Oops!!

Unless giving out the password publicly somehow infringes on our ability to view the site (too much web site traffic maybe) then it doesn't bother me that it is public at all. I agree with d-r that it is a sales gimmick in that you can't view the site until you are member certified. I'm sure Disney would care a lot more than I do!

As far as the $5.00 teaser to talk to him, I think it is ridiculous and somewhat entertaining. I wonder if anyone will fall for it. Hopefully not.

As far as asking $14/point, more power to him. I recently had a communication with someone who owns a very sought after property in Key West. It turned out a trade was not going to work out because I won't be able to get him the season/accomodations he requested. He offered to rent his propert to me instead for the FULL value of what it would cost to rent if I called the resort directly. 14/point is still significantly under rack rate. I'm not saying I would personally rent out for a profit like this clown, but even 14/point is a deal for non-owners.

I just sent an email to the seller saying I was disappointed they had put the members only information on a public forum, and that I would be contacting MS about it. I think perhaps if we all did that, she would take it out.

Just got a return call from Jackie in Member Services...seems there's not much they can do about it...probably not "important" enough to waste lawyers on since Disney does have an interest in e-Bay sales and their copyrights and trademarks. :)

She did recommend contacting the member and requesting that they remove the information as that had worked in the past, but based on the apparant response by the seller, they're all about them and screw the rest of the world.

Now, given the seller's location, would I be overly mean if I wished a bull moose in rutt decided their back yard was a nice place to setup home for a few days. :)

For people who still see the username and passwd, hit refresh in your browser.

I'm still not so sure i'd not wish a moose in rutt on this person though. :)

disboards has been around along time (no offense) - but there was a man who rented his points thru the local paper

Well I just got another nasty gram from this person!! Just glad it was removed - again, not that there was much info that the general public can't know!! But again, the principal of it!

I basically told her I could care less what she did with her points, but putting the password out there was wrong!

By the time I viewed the website, the password stuff was gone. But I still think it's misleading - she talks about buying her points for $14/point. I think that sounds like she selling her timeshare entirely, not renting points. If I saw her auction and hadn't read this first, I'd think I could buy her 150 points for the rest of the 40-odd years that's left on the lease for $14/point. Very misleading and not in the spirit of DVC.

Sorry, I found this funny. I guess they shudln't have publised the webiste with password, but really it didn't get me all out of whack to hear that they did. I rmember when we first starting seroiosly thinking about buying DVc reading about the website and password on thsi board. You wodul ahev thought I had to give my first born to get into the site! Finally after I posted we had put our down payment down sevral emailed me the "secreat" password. Really...there is not that much on the site that is so secreat that you coudn't coem over to this board and get the info anyway. I thought I was going to find the answer to life on that webiste! LOL I guess the site is a way for us to feel a littel more special. And as DVC members we are anyway, aren't we? ;)
Plus, they might not have even known that the password was suppossed to be so secretive.
Now, I also got a hoot out of the bid of $ 5 to talk to the perosn. Interesting I guess... Funny. I will be very curuios to see if anyone pays it. $14 a point? Good for them! Wonder if they'll get it? The person that goes on the vacation will still probbaly get a deal?
BUT...I ahve to agree here - it did seem a littel misleading. It almost did sound like you were buying the timeshare permanently, not just for one vacation.

If Disney wanted to, they could get the auction cancelled based on the photo that is displayed. Since it is from the Member Guide, I'm sure it is copyrighted, and it's display violates Ebay policy.

However, I have seen various posts from members wishing points rented for more than $10. This may be the way to make it happen. Even at $14, it is way below rack.:smooth:

He is 'charging' the five dollars so he can get the ad posted the 'Other Travel' Section. On Ebay in order to sell travel you need to get 'certified' and pay another $50 to get the certification by faxing deeds and such to a third party vendor. He is doing this just to get his ad posted. He states he will refund the $5 if he can not get the reservation.

This is actually a good idea !!! It would be interesting to see if it works. Even at $14/pt someone will get a great deal.

If it does work it would be a good outlet for those who feel $9-$10/pt if far to low for a rental price.

Dave O.
Go Howard Dean !!!

PS Yes he should not have put the password out on the ad.

True, there is not any real information there that you could not find elsewhere.

What is there is the MS number. Toll Free numbers are not free, someone pays for them. In the case of MS, the cost of those calls to MS comes from our dues. So, even if a guys gets the number, is on hold for a few minutes, and is kindly dismissed by a CM because he's not a member, we just paid for that call.

And, there was a member on hold waiting to get a legitimate ressie while this guy was tying up the line.
