I have been wondering how safe are the in room safes? I am going to be staying at the Poly and am thinking about taking alot of cash with me, but don't want to walk around the parks with it. Is there a charge for using the safe? Has anyone ever had anything stolen out of one?

I've never had a problem with the safes and haven't heard of any problems on any of the boards I visit.

I use them often and find them very convienent. I just carry the key on a key chain and keep it in my fanny pack. When we stayed at CBR one year, I found it to ba a hassel to go to the main house to put my purse in a safe deposit box while we were at the parks. CBR didn't have in room safes, I think the deluxe resorts are the only ones that do.

CBR doesn't have an in-room safe? It may have something to do with resort age and not category....the All Stars do have them, though they are quite small.

We did not have one in our room, I searched everywhere. When I inquired about a safe deposit box at the main house, they said nothing about any in- room safes and offered the deposit box without any hesitation.:D

We stayed at CSR this summer and had no problems with the safe. As Winka said, they are very small, about 12"x 12"x 3" deep. Just remember to take your stuff out at the end of your stay.;)
...I figured the in-room safe would be safer than leaving my extra money in the car, so in went my wallet and car keys. Wouldn't you know it, we drove all the way into Georgia on our way home before I realized I left them in the room! (I checked under the beds 3 times, but forgot about the safe!) Calling the hotel directly, I talked to a CM with a very thick accent, but assumed everything was taken care of. When nothing came in the mail after about a week I called again and got things straightened out. I had to pay for FedEx, but otherwise it all came out perfectly. Not a thing was missing, and included with my items was a copy of the papers they sign (2 CMS) when opening a room safe to get things out, with everything inventoried.
I would feel perfectly fine using the safe next time, only thing is, I'll make sure I empty it before I go home!
I mailed them back the key after I received my things, including a good report about the honesty of the 2 CMs who got my things for me. I would hope all resorts have the same procedures and honest CMs.

I thought all resorts had inroom safes. The only moderate I haven't stayed at is CBR, but all the others do. I think it would be strange for only CBR not to have one. As another poster said the All Stars have one.

ALL WDW resorts have safes.
I'm very concerned that you planning on bringing a lot of cash. That's an invitation to disaster! Instead, bring travelers checks. If your cash is lost, it's gone forever. If you lose your travelers checks you can get them replaced.

Poly safes are located in the closet in the wall. They are small and have a key. We do not take much cash with us as we put as much on the card as possible. Between the two of us we usually have $1200 in it. We have never had a problem and have always use the safes.

I haven't stayed at the Poly yet, so I don't have a photo of its in-room safe. However, I do have photos of the in-room safes at a few of the WDW resorts that I have stayed in:

Thanks so much for all the good advice, I think I am going to take maybe only around 1000.00 in cash and just use my check card or credit cards. Thanks again!

They are pretty safe because there is only one key to each lock. Housekeeping does not have an extra key and the Front Desk does not have a key. So when you lock it and take your key, no one else can get in it to take your items.
Now if you loose your key, you will have to pay the resort to drill the lock out. That is the only way that it will open. They will do that in front of you and let you get your stuff out. Then they replace the old lock with a new one and a new key.

I don't think you will have any problems with the safe but like others said don't plan on using it for too much stuff. We always put our plane tickets and our wallets in them and that is really all that will fit. Maybe a small camera if we really tried.
I also want to suggest that you look into traveler's cheques at least for some of your money. They really are much safer. We usually only take around $200 of our money in cash and the rest is in travlers cheques.

The Poly safe had plenty of room for plane tickets, palm pilot, 8-1/2"x11" envelopes, etc. Not enough room to stuff a laptop computer in there unless it was really small. To me, this is a selling point. :)
