View Full Version : Ways to beat the heat?

My parents and I are taking a short-notice trip to WDW (just a day and a half, but at least it's a trip :D ) in just under 2 weeks. None of us, especially my mom, can take the heat well, so I'd appreciate any tips. :D
None of us will/can wear shorts (the will or can varies by person. ;) ) but cool clothes otherwise will be done.
I'm going to get a mister fan to keep full with water -- should I get one at the parks, or better to find one at Walmart or something before we go? If they're not *too* expensive in-park, I think it'd be neat to have a WDW one. But if it's something insane like $20, I'd rather spend $5 or something at Walmart or Academy or wherever.
Poweraid, water, and more poweraid. Those will be done. Ice-cream's a no-can-do or that'd be on the list.
Jumping from A/C to A/C.
Touring early mornings and late afternoon, spending the heat of the afternoon either back at the room or in the A/C portions of the parks.
Anything else?
We're planning to hit Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and Epcot.
Thanks!!

the biggest thing I do it to not think about being hot so much. yeah its hot, but if you keep thinking about it, it makes it worse.
drink water. freeze it the nght before and it will stay cooler longer.
freeze a washcloth the night before ( dampen the entire thing and put into freezer) place in a ziploc bag the next morning and when you get really hot, put it on your next and wipe your face.
if you are going to the Magic kingdom...instead of walking from one end of the park to another...hop on the railroad..its out of the sun, you get a nice break and there is a nice breeze.

Light cotton pants are a must if you won't wear shorts. Jeans in this weather are intolerable! I always wear khaki colored gauzy or linen type. They're loose, thin and so comfortable.
Walmart sells these cold bandanas in their sporting goods department. They work great. Just open the package, run them under cold water and tie around your neck or head. They may look a bit silly but boy they keep you cool for hours! They are only a few dollars each. We used them when our AC broke on the way home from FL. when it was 95 degrees. They were a life saver! :)

FYI, at the MK the mister fans are $17. My crazy DH who didn't want to bring ours from home, decided on the spot that he wanted one. I couldn't believe it! But at least I made him carry it the whole time!:teeth:

FLUIDS FLUIDS FLUIDS...water not power aide...power aide is more sugary...
also they have these really cool things called (i think) neck coolers..they are bandanas that have beads in them that absorb water...soak them in cold water the night before and wear them during the day...

I would get me a pair of capri knee pants and wear them. They come pass the knees and come a light weight kinds.
I would make sure I drink water and powerade big time.
To the person that it's a sugar type drink. That's true it helps put other kinds of fluilds that your body needs when outside in the heat.
Trust me I know this for a fact because I work outside at a baseball park. Water does not do it when the it's in the 90's. Because I drink gallons a water a day.

I second the loose tshirt and capris, or even a sundress. I also bought a mister bottle, personal fan, and cooling bandana. Will try them on our Oct trip. If you do get burnt, get some of the green or blue soothing aloe and put it in the fridge (or on some ice). It works wonders!

I found out accidentally the coolest way to spend a day in the sun - the first thing I went on was a water ride and got absolutely soaked! I must have been wearing a medium-weight t-shirt and pants because it took forever to dry out - even in the hottest July day - but that was the coolest day I had!

Try not to wear a backpack - it will make your back all hot & uncomfortable. Bring a small fanny pack or a across the shoulder smallish purse/bag for your camera, wallet..
if you have med-long hair make sure you take a scrunchy or clip to pull it up.
If you have tevas or similiar sandals with good support, wear them or at least don't wear heavy socks with your tennis shoes
Have fun!!!!!!!! :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Try Ice Cream. That seemed to cool us off the last time we were there when the weather was in the 90's.
I highly recommend the Tollhouse Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches, YUM!

Buy a water bottle that comes with a waist belt to hold it (one less thing for you to hold). Then in the morning before you depart for the parks, fill it with crushed ice (if available) or ice cubes. By the time you are ready to drink some, you will have nice cold water handy!
PS - I found ours in a sporting goods store.
