this will be my first time staying on site, and i don't know how to move around the world. what do the experts think? rely on disney transportation or drive myself? we won't be doing any evening adult activities as we have 2 small children and 1 older (almost teenager) with us. thanks!

Depends on where you are staying. Where would that be? Also, will you be going back to your resort during the day?

We're staying at ASMu too, and I'd love to hear some input on this topic as well. We're driving so we will have a car. Looking forward to reading what the experts have to say on this subject!:D

I personally drive everywhere except to the Magic Kingdom. The Ticket and Transportation Center and the monorail/boat ride over to the MK loses it's charm after a while. The busses drop you right off at the door :).

Why don't you try the bus to the MK and see how you like it? I've heard that the All-Stars busses are really great.

We stayed at ASMu last august and the busses to the parks were fine. I would use your car if you go to another resort or to the water parks.

We stayed at AKL which is close to All Stars. We used the busses during the day and the car when we returned after our afternoon break as you could park near the front door of Epcot and MGM as the early day folks had left. Used the car for Resort hoping and the water parks. Mk we used the bus at all times as its tough with the car, you take the tram and then a boat.
Loved having the car as an option and it was not much more than the Mears shuttle in cost.

if you think you will be going to DTD and want the convenienceof having transportation at your fingertips then yes get the car if not then don't. I like to go to DTD and the outlets so I like to have a car at my disposal. and with the complaints I have read on bus svc it might be worth it especially if you can get a great rate!

You can't beat Disney transportation. You are on vacation so forget about driving. You do enough driving the rest of the year.
With the cost of gas skyrocketing, think of the savings. With all the money you save you could have a few meals at better restaurants.
When I am on vacation I get a Lincoln towncar to pick me up at my home, drive me to the airline gate. I get Tiffany Towncar to meet me at the airport and take me to my Disney hotel.
If I decide to go off the grounds I get a cab. When it's time to get home Tiiffany takes me to the airport and when I get to Detroit I am picked up at the luggage pick up and taken directly to my home.

You didn't say if you were flying in or driving. If you're taking your own car, you can try driving and using the buses and do what you like best. But don't drive to the MK--that's a big pain. The bus is almost always best for MK.

If you're flying, personally I wouldn't get a car. We drive down, but we never touch our car after we park at the hotel. It's so nice to be able to let someone else worry about how to get around, and you never have to sit in a hot car that's been out in the sun or try to remember where you park. It's even harder to find a rental in the parking lot since they only come in a few models and colors. Since your kids are young, it's easier to just wait for a bus than to carry tired kids through a parking lot and worry about them running in front of a car. Some people never use Disney transportation, but I think it's part of what makes Disney vacations so great.

We stayed at ASMovies last fall, and the Disney transportation was excellent. We never waited more than 10 minutes for a bus, and if the bus was crowded, someone always voluteered a seat to us, since we had a 19-month-old in tow. We only used our vehicle the first evening we arrived in order to get to our PS at Chef Mickey's.
