We are going to drive to Savannah for our first leg and I would like some recommendations on where to stay. I want to stay cheap, but nothing dirty or gross!!! (Isn't that everyone's criteria??)
Someplace with free breakfast would be great, also.
Any suggestions??

Pam,
We've stayed at the Hampton Inn. There are several along I95 in Savannah. We usually stay at the one on Abercorn (sp) St.
If you check the Hampton Inn web site you can find out availabilty and rates. They are not cheap but they are nice and clean and you get a free breakfast.
I tried cheap at the Days Inn(Hardyville, SC), not doing that again.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn at Savannah/Richmond Hill a few weeks ago. We would highly recommend it. It's one of the Hamptons with inside corridor entry to all the rooms.

I've never been or seen in a Hampton that didn't have inside corridors...

We stayed at the Clarion Inn & Suites off exit 94 in Savannah. It was really, really nice for the money (I think we paid $70) for the night.
It was the only place I could find with queen beds instead of standard double beds. It also had indoor corridors.
I found it to be very clean & family friendly. They have an indoor pool with a jacuzzi, and offered a free continental breakfast the following morning.
I highly recommend this place! In fact, on our way home, we were wishing we found a place as nice (all we could find was one of those Sheraton Four Points, and it was filthy....but we were exhausted so we took it...yuck).

The Hampton In at US 52 & I 95 in Florence, SC does not have corridors. I believe I was told by an employee that the building was converted to a Hampton Inn. Believe me, it does NOT live up to the standards of Hampton Inns, but they did live up to their satisfaction guaranteed policy.
We have stayed many times at the Hampton Inn in Richmond Hills & another one south of there in Darien, GA. I highly recommend both for safety, comfort, quality, breakfast, etc. Just down the road from the RH Hampton Inn is a restaurant Southern Image that serves delicious down home cooking (sure beats fast food)!

We're going to try the Wingate Inn at Exit 94 Savannah off of I-95 for our November trip. It's new, so the room should be in good shape - and I've had so many disappointing experiences at hotels on road trips that I'm willing to pay a few extra bucks for somewhere decent. Rates range from $69 up, with continental breakfast included.
This turned up on a search I did at freetrip.com - recommended by someone on the Budget Board. It lets you search for 2, 3, 4 star hotels within a few miles of your route. Just for fun I put in 4 stars at first - nothing between Richmond, VA and Orlando!
