I was invited to a preview last night of Pirates of the Caribbean. I really enjoyed it very much. From the audience reaction it seemed we all liked it. The set design was excellent - lots of atmosphere and colorful wharf scenes. The special effects were great; for once they really added to the story rather than seeming like something put in to jazz up the show. Johnny Depp was so funny - his mannerisms and expressions were priceless. I liked how there were several nods to the Disney ride - some of the sets were close to the look of the ride and there is a scene in prison with the dog holding the keys. There's even a joke thrown in about a "little mermaid." There are some parts that might be slightly scary for the younger kids, but there are jokes for the parents, swordfights for the boys, a brave and intrepid heroine for the girls - really something for everyone. It's good summertime entertainment that wasn't totally mindless; the story is fresh (when's the last time pirates were the focus of a movie?) and it wasn't totally predictable. I give it a thumbs-up!

I saw the commercials and I was thinking it looked pretty good. After all, any movie that takes and elf and makes him a pirate can't be that bad. Thanks for the review.

Great review. Don't give away anything!!! I am going to go out next Wednesday and watch this with my dw.

The real question....

Was it worthy of a PG-13 rating? That is the discussion that we were having here last week. Did Disney make a mistake of releasing a movie to intense the normal Disney movie crowd.

I, understand that it is a Pirate movie, so I am fine with the PG-13. But, there are others who are against the movie being released under Disney's name.

Glad to hear about the POTC ride tie-in. Sounds Great!!!!!

Just one thing I gotta know - Do they have "The Redhead"?

I thought it did deserve the PG-13 rating. Partly because there is a lot of fighting (they are pirates after all, which means they aren't the nicest people!) and there are many deaths resulting from the fighting. There are some effects which might be disturbing for young children - I'm trying not to give too much away here but from the commercial I thought my 8 yo nephew would like it, and his mother & I both agreed last night that it might be too intense for him. Although I know other children who would be fine with it, some even younger than him.

Now, whether it should be released under the Disney name: I don't really see why not. I would consider it a family movie that is appropriate for the older children in your family. I mean, Bambi and Snow White have aspects that would bother younger children, too. I thought the film-makers did a good job (in this day & age) of NOT overplaying the violence and gore. They could have had more gratuitous sex & violence like all these other so-called tween movies that are PG-13. (With stars as cute as Johnny Depp & Orlando Bloom, I'd have liked a little more sex! :D But the kiddies shouldn't see that stuff!)

Princess Aurora - they did have "the redhead", but in a slightly different context. It's a quick scene but funny if you're familiar with the ride. There are lots of little things like that - probably even more than I was able to catch!

Now I'm really looking forward to this movie. I'm sure I'll like Johnny Depp and my wife and oldest daughter will love Orlando Bloom & my youngest will probably like the action & ride references...I hope my positive outlook isn't enough to kill this film...;)

I still think most people consider PG-13 "family friendly" after all, most pirate movies are rate "ARRRR"

I am excited to see this movie, especially after the comments posted here.

I just want to make a comment about the ratings. I remember when i was 10 going to see "Grease" when it came out. It was PG (we had no PG-13 way back then). When it was re-released in the theaters on it's 20th anniversary (?), I took my sister, who was then about the same age that I was, and I thought, am I crazy?! all the inuenndo in that movie - yikes! It should be re-rated PG-13!

Can't wait to see POTC!

When are they going to add Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom to the POTC ride? :smooth:

As soon as the movie crosses $200 million! :D

I said that as a joke but when I think about it if the movie does that well or maybe better I wouldnt be surprised a bit to see them in the ride. Hey if they are talking about changing Alien Encounter to some Stitch show I wouldn't put it past them to change POTC as well :p (I know I go a little overboard with Alien Encounter sometimes please forgive me ;) )

Thanks so much for the post-we're really looking forward
to this one. I'm not worried about the PG-13, as long as
sexual content isn't part of it and I doubt there's much
language-didn't pirates just say "blimey!" lol
Thanks again!!

A PG-13 movie is fine, now what they should do is up the ante and get to a r-rating!!!!!(lol)

I got to see the movie tonight, and I agree with the original post. The movie was great, the acting was great, the scene with the dog in the jail house was excellent. There were enough references to the ride to please us Disney lovers, but not too much to make the movie goofy.

I also agree that it deserved a PG-13 rating. I took my 7yo, and he covered his eyes in a few scences, especially the first one where Elizabth gets to meet all skeletons.

Now, if they did add Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom to the actual ride, they'd have to drag me out of there. Depp has always been a looker, and Bloom as a brunette can light my fire just like he can when he was an elf. : Pinkbounc

Planogirl,

I had to, unfortuantely, take my husband, but he did get me an extra poster. I may put it over my bed. Men just should not look that good!!

I am completely in love (or lust?) with Captain Jack Sparrow - I found him strangely but immensely attractive! Wow! I just saw the movie - it's awesome!! I have no words to describe it.

Loved the movie --- I agree about Capt. Jack Sparrow - LOL!

BTW --- did anyone else stay til the END of the very long credits???

I did -- and there was a bit more "movie" after the credits!!!

Nooooooo...We always stay until the end of the credits, but the kids were tired, and it was 9:30. Was it really good?? Is it worth it?? We stayed through the end of Harry Potter II and the extra little bit at the end was good, but not worth the stay.

I saw a free preview on Tuesday night. I loved the movie!!
But I also didn't stay for the last bit after the credits... so I am going again tomorrow night. I will stay this time for the bit.

Yeah!! I can't wait!

Saw it last night and i have to say (honestly) it's the best movie I've seen all summer.

I'll have to see it several more times just to catch all the ride references because they go by so fast!

Make sure you stay until after the end of the credits - worth the wait.

WE went last night & loved it! the FX were great! But we did not stay to see the credits, the movie was packed! I guess I will have to see it again! ;)

Ok, I guess I am out of the loop, but i did not realize that Orlando Bloom was the blond elf guy from TLOTR. I only saw the first "Rings" movie, and there were no photos of him on our store's laser disck (sorry, it's a dvd now), so........my "tweener" sister had to fill me in! This movie was worth the wait!

PS: We kept singing "A Pirate's Life for Me" out to the parking lot, and she was trying to get the rest of us to shut up. There are some hints of the ride in the movie, but not overtly so. Johnny Depp does a SUPER job!

My husband and I along with our daughter 17 and our son 14 just returned from the movie. We all really liked it. The references to the ride were great. The movie reminded me of the old Errol Flynn movies. It was wonderful. The bit after the credits was good. There was a preview for Haunted Mansion hope that one is just as good.

We saw it Thurs.....and LOVED it!!:D
Depp and Bloom are awesome!! They worked so well together!!!!
What a great mix of characters!!
I loved the way Will Turner transformed ! He seemed to start out with an innocence and evolved into quite the "rogue"!! But still the "good guy"!

We plan to see it again.....

But someone please tell me what the little extra was at the end of the credits??!

Just saw the movie It was awesome!!! They sang the pirate song from the ride and had some other small refrences to the ride. The actors were great, Orlando Bloom and Johny Depp did really well together! After a good deal of credits, trying not to give anything away, there is a short clip of film that may or may not be making way for a sequel, we discussed it the whole way home and that clips purpose is really in the eyes of the beholder. Good movie, highly recommened, disneys making a comback after tresure planet and has done a superb job. Cant wait to see haunted mansion, eddie murphy and disney attraction good combimation.

Saw it last night at our local drive in. Double feature followed by Finding Nemo! We loved it. Even my husband who was somewhat skeptical. My ten year old son had his eyes on the screen the whole movie, and he caught all the ride references.
Johnny Depp was perfect in this part!

DS & I went to see it on Fri. at the 1:25 matinee b/c it was too yukky outside to do anything else. Well, I think everyone took the day off to see it b/c the place was packed! DS accompanied me, fully dressed in the latest pirate wear from the shop right off the PotC ride -- hat, head wrap, monocular, etc. Made him leave the sword in the car!

We thoroughly enjoyed it, although DS watched some of the skeleton scenes while peeking through his fingers! But we both agreed that we'd love to see it again soon and, next time, we'll take Daddy w/us!

Johnny and Orlando made me swoon ... and, as someone stated, it reminded me of the old "swashbuckler" films. So much action, adventure and a little romance added in. Have to love the character of Elizabeth Swann ... she was not a "damsel in distress"/Disney princess type. Good to have a strong female character in a film!

One word says it all, Fantastic! Saw it last Saturday night and and will be going again this weekend. Made it half way through the credits at the end and my dd had to go to the rest room. So I missed the end. What did I miss?

I have watched the film twice with my fiance, and we both loved it. IMHO Johnny Depp's interpretation of the character added so much to the film, and turned what could have been just a typical "pearl harbour" type extravaganza to something really funny.
The effects were great, as was the score. If you can stay to the end through pages of credits... we did to find out the film locations, there is the possible hint at a sequel...(in true disney form... still awaiting cinderella 17..:-)) involving the monkey and one of those cursed gold coins....

My only question.... if Will's father was also cursed for taking the coin, and then sent it to his son, does that mean Will was also cursed, (that would have been obvious at midnight?) or was Will's father trapped on the sea bed for years, unable to die.. nasty....???... ah well, its only a film...

remember, Will really never had the coin, the girl did in her dresser. and yes, his dad would have been like the pirate, since he took the coin like the rest of the pirates did, follows the rule of original sin.

Our theory is that if Will's father had participated in the theft then he too would have been immortalized which begs the question as to his fate.
