Univeral Pictures is releasing a "Peter Pan" movie in theaters December 25, 2003.
Looks interesting, but I thought Disney owned the rights?

I saw the trailer when we went to see The Hulk and it looks very appealing to me. As far as Disney owning the right to the story, don't forget that Spielberg already made the move Hook about 10 years (?) ago.

I also thought Disney owned the rights. I saw the trailer for it on Friday & it really scared me. Definitely doesn't look like one for the kids -- maybe a grown up twist on Peter Pan!

Disney own the rights to their images of the characters from all the movies like peter Pan, Snow White, et. al. They do not own any of the actual story rights.

Interesting fact- JM Barrie gave the copyright to the play Peter Pan to the Great Ormond Street children's hospital in 1929.

Disney only owns the rights to their movie and the charater designs they created for it. The actual stories and the "basic" characters are owned by the children's hospital - and they are free to license them to whomever they wish.
There will be another moive later this year about the life of JM Barie starring Johnny "Pirates of the Caribbean" Depp that will also cover the 'Peter Pan' story.
There are rumors that the hospital, that relays on the royalties for a substantial amount of its funding, that they are displeased with the way Disney has be handling the licensing lately. And they been paying very close attention to the ongoing lawsuit over the royalty payments that Disney owes on 'Winnie the Pooh'. It's said the 'Peter Pan' rights holders are looking for other people to take over all things 'Pan'.

Ummm...just something Universal needs ...I could see a whole land built around "Neverland" in one of there theme parks. Of course it would geared for that missing demographic, you know the one that that the “pixie dust people” say is one of the main reasons that makes Disney better the Universal.
Which also brings up another idea. I wonder if Universal has made a call to the new owners of the Muppets?

No that was "Hook" several years ago. This is a new film.
Oh. Maybe they will at least have Sandy Duncan, then.
