Help! With all the rain we have had here in Massachusetts my garden has been invaded by slugs! Prior to this year I had never seen one, so I'm not sure where they came from (possibly plants bought at a nursery?)
Last night I sprinkled the little buggers with salt, but this morning there were twice as many!! I've read about egg shells, copper, and trapping. Does anyone here have any other ideas? What works the best?
Thanks!!
Amy

<font color=navy>I've heard of this one ...
Get a bowl/pan, and put some beer in it at the bottom. The slugs & snails are drawn to the malt (I think), and drown at the bottom.
Good luck!

My Mom is fond of using soap. She will mix up some soapy water and spray or coat the area and plants. Slugs supposedly hate it.

Welcome Amy, and you too Mary Jo!! :)
Those slimy, slithering slugs....yuck! I know that having some slugs can be beneficial for your garden, but nothing is more maddening then to go out in the morning and see that they have been treating your plants like their own personal buffet table!!! What have they been munching on?
I've tried the eggshells, and Mary Jo's drunken slugs suggestion ( some beer for them, more beer for me! ;)). I've also tried using wood ash (the same way as the eggshells), and putting down boards and hand picking them off in the morning. I've only had moderate success with these methods. No particular one seemed to work better than the other.
I know that one of our Buds, Amid Chaos I think, has used a product called something like....Slug Be Gone ???? When search is working, I'll have a look and see if I can find the correct product name. Amid had been very happy with how it worked.

Escar-go....use it one season and you won't have any slugs for the rest of the season or the next.!

Thanks to everyone for your advice and welcome. I will have to spend more time here (I'm new to gardening and always have questions!)
I couldn't find the Escar-go at our local ACE, so I'll hit the nursery or Home Depot tonight. There were only a few slugs out there this morning when I went to water. Maybe the salt helped?
Thanks again!

It could of helped, Amy. :)
BTW - I meant to comment on your pic. What all do you have growing in your garden? I think I see some lettuce, pole beans, and pepper plants? :)
I hope you'll come back and join us, the more the merrier! :)

This is my first vegetable garden, so I decided to try a few of just about everything. Let's see.....
Lettuce
Brussel Sprouts
Eggplant
Beans
Tomatos
Corn
Cucumbers
Zuchinni Squash
Spaghetti Squash
Peppers
Peas
Broccoli
Cabbage
Carrots
Pumpkins (Sugar)
Aside from the carrots, the rest were bought from a nursery. Next year, I would like to start everything from seed. This year we were at Disney for ten days in May, so I wouldn't have been able to care for the seedlings.
There are a few more pictures of my gardens and the small pond we constructed on my website: http://www.amyandjoe.com
Sticky, slimy, gross, disgusting slugs. Their worst then the Giant Grasshopper.

And they also cause nightmares!

Reminds me of an early morning stroll around the CBR. Nice resort but too many slugs.

OMG Mamu, that first pic almost made me lose the nice pineapple cooler I'm sipping on!!! :earseek: ;)
Amy, a very cool website! :) Is Christopher your cute patootie? :)
I like your little bridge, I'd love something like that. I'm very jealous too, because you have a BAR!!! I'd love to have a bar, not that I drink or anything (heck no!!;)), I just think they're fun places to plan which seeds to grow for your next year's garden! ;) :)
