I would imagine you might see it go a little bit higher still in the next couple of days guys - the pound has gained over 2 cents against the dollar today.

Was half way through ordering some (did I say some, I meant lots!), when I thought I'd check the boards and found this thread. I don't know whether to buy or not now?

Be aware of places offering good rates and your bank charging for cash advances.

I don't know if this affects M&S, but I bought some currency from Travelchoice in Norwich last year, commisson free and at the best rate in the city.

When I saw my bank statement two days later my bank had deducted a 2% cash advance fee for the amount I got out.

Therefore the promise of commission free and the good rate didn't materialise at all.......!!!

I just got 1.608 at my local branch of Lloyds TSB, and now don't have to worry about whether I'll get stumped for a cash advance charge.

Hope this helps....

Thats a very good point Julian & I have also been caught out by that in the past.

With M&S if you order online you have to use their chargecard which takes a week or two to apply for. Not sure how it works if you go to one of their instore Bureaux De Change.

Must admit I hadn't thought of Lloyds who I also bank with, & presumably can order online so thanks for that.

When I was in M&S recently buying currency for DD's trip to France, the cashier told the lady in front of me that some banks will charge even if a Debit card is used.

I usually pay by cash. I don't like carrying large sums of cash, but it's usually straight from the cash point/building society, into M&S usually with DS or DH as body guard!!!!

Hello All

What rate would you get in Orlando, we are going in July and i am thinking of getting minimum amount in the UK and exchanging trav cheques over there.

I assume you mean that you are taking travellers cqs with you purchased over here. If so, you need to buy them in US $ and therefore the exchange rate is set before you go - I wouldn't take travellers cqs in £ sterling to the states, if I were you.

I agree with the above - you will find it very difficult to exchange UK Pound travellers cheques in the US :)

You can use US$ TC's just like cash anyway.

Is it going to go higher before October thats the question:confused: Buy now or wait. I suppose I could buy a bit now and wait and see if it goes higher.

Clare,
Buying 'some' now is what I have done! I bought some TC a couple of months ago at a good rate. The TC I bought yesterday were at an even better rate.Whatever way I look at it,all rates are far beter than for my October 2002 trip;)

I agree - we'd already got a few left over from our recent trip to St Lucia (bought extra at a good rate *** we knew we'd need them in October) and bought some TCs yesterday from the Post Office at a good rate. My motto is get them in when they're above $1.55;)

Thanks for the advice...

I think i will take some US $ in cash - about $100 and the rest in trav cheques (US $) + my flexible best friend !!

Thanks
