I see several off site hotels that are described as "maingate east" or "maingate west"; what exactly does this mean? Is one direction better than the other? We are booked at the Holiday Inn Maingate East and I am trying to figure out the jargon before we get there and it's too late! Thanks!

I believe "East' or "West" refers to the location of the hotel from the MK/Epcot exit (25B) off I-4. This is the "Maingate" entrance, World Drive.
If you are on I-192 in Kissimmee, "West" hotels are closer to the All-Star Resorts and AK. The "East" hotels are closer to Celebration FL and Old Town.

we're also booked at the HI Maingate East in July (have backup res at the new Residence Inn also). Have you ever stayed at the HI before and know what it is like? I have not heard a lot of great things about it - nothing specifically bad, either!
Also does anyone reading this know if the Sports complex is closer to Maingate East or West?

The Sports Complex is right off the I-4 exit to the MK (25B). So, how far it is from your hotel really depends on how far "East" or "West" you are (if that makes sense).
