View Full Version : WISHcon 2005!! Anyone here interested in setting this goal with me???

The initial idea of losing weight for me was to then be able to do the WDW half marthon in January 05. So, my question is:
IS there anyone out there that is interested in getting a group together to walk the WDW half marathon in January 2005?
The half marathon is 13.1 miles and is a flat, point to point course that begins at EPCOT and finishes outside of MK. the half marathon course joins the marathon course at 3.3 miles after circling the World SHowcase at EPCOT before heading to the MK. After strolling down Main Street USA and through Cinderella's castle, the half marathon participants exit the park and dash for the finish line!
*You must be able to maintain a 16 minute per mile pace- walking or running it doesn't matter- throughout the whole race.
*The half marathon must be completed in 3 1/2 hours. Anyone not able to maintain the 16 minute per mile pace will be picked up and transported to the finish line.
*There was a $70.00 non refundable registration fee for the 2004 marathon and I think you get a certificat and a pin when you finish. Reg. fee may go up for next 2005.
*The marathon is usually held the 2nd weekend in January- usually on a Sunday.
Wouldn't it be a blast to have a group of us doing this?? Please let me know if you're interested!

It is interesting that you should mention this because I thought I was the only one interested in doing this as a goal! :) I would love to be able to actually run the 1/2 marathon and it would be so much better if there were other WISHers doing the same thing. It is hard for me to plan so far in advance but if you get more information such as when you can register then please let me know!

Becka- registration is usually up by March the year before the event takes place. For instance in March of this yera people registered for the Jan 04 marathon. It evidentally is essential to register in the first few days of the registration process though- especially for the half marathon, because it fills up VERY QUICKLY. I tried to register for next January's marathon and didn't get in in time- and that was only 2 weeks after registration began!

OMG I am getting all emotional reading this! Count me in. This would be something terrific to accomplish and what a treat it would be too! It would be so awesome to make this a big WISH event for many!

I would love to except that we have a trip planned for Febuary. I can't afford two trips that close together.
Pittsburgh had their marathon yesterday and I told DH that I would love to set walking the marathon as a goal for two years from now. I want to be realistic. A year would be great, but I don't know that is attainable.

Well, I have already told you that I was interested in this and I think it is a wonderful idea!! What an awesome goal this would be to accomplish!! We have a year and a half to get ready for this, so I definitely think it is something worth doing!!

I'm in!
I had actually registered for the 2002 1/2 marathon, but our plans changed and we had to cancel our trip to WDW entirely. :( They were nice enough to still send me the 1/2 marathon tee shirt, so it wasn't a total loss.
After we cancelled, I fell off the wagon as far as my treadmill goes. But I know if I have this as a goal, I'll be more likely to keep training and to keep the weight off this time! ;)
DD has told me about this website: www.coolrunning.com.
Check it out! It helps you set up a training schedule and keep track of what you've done, and it's FREE!
I'm already getting excited about this.
BTW, I think that we should plan an official WISH meet for the weekend of the marathon. Those who are not running can be there to cheer on those who are! What do you think????

That sounds really exciting to me.....If the time comes for registration next March and I'm on the fence I'll still register in hopes of particpating the following Jan......
I'm not sure of the spacing of my trips over the next 2 years so I'm a definate maybe....
Great idea...

I can't belileve I actually got responses to this idea!! I didn't think there would be too many interested, but I guess what spurred me into posting this was glo pming me after I had made a coment to beanie on another thread and telling me she would like to do this and then beanie telling me to post it! Thanks girls!!!
KathyFP- we're talking about going to the WDW marathon in 2005- not next year in 2004. That would give us about 19 months to get in shape. Is your next trip to WDW in Feb of 2004? If so- maybe you could come back to WDW 11 months later to join us?!?!?
Wonderwoven- I think making it a WISH event is a great idea. How about it Kelsie? You're the woman in charge! We could do lots of fun things that weekend- maybe even have a WISH rewards ceremony!! I was thinkinga about this earlier- everyone should save a piece of the biggest sized clothing they have- then we can compare what we were to what we are!
Nativetxn- if we can make this into a WISH meet- you could come and cheer us all on if you can't walk it! You can come even if there isn't a WISH meet! We love you- and we are absolutely positive you would be the head cheerleader!
Disneyaholic- thanks for the web site. I was wondering how to go about getting started and this will help. I also have a neighbor that runs marathons and he is more then willing to help out with answers for questions etc.
Maybe we can set up a time schedule of things that should be happening between now and the time we actually go and we can post it when those things roll around! Do you kow what I mean? Maybe a month by month goal sheet that will move us towards our final destination. That would help everyone, but especially me!
Zurgswife- It know it will be difficult to plan almost 2 years in advance, but I sure hope you can make it! I came up with 2 years because
1. the registration for next year is already closed
2. this will give evryone a really good head start for training and for financial and trip strategy.
I am REALLY getting excited now! This will be so fun!! I have a million ideas swirling around in my head now!! OH BOY!! OH BOY!! OH BOY!!!!!
Thanks everyone I'm making a list fo alof us that are interested and We'll get somethigns going listed for goals etc.
Now for the BIG question. Has anyone ever done a marathon before ? Anyone with any kind of experience?? Maybe you Dsineyaholic since you were alreday scheduled at one point to do the marathon?? If not, maybe we can recruit someone from another board. I know I've read a few people post about the WDW marathon before. ANd if all else fails- I will educate myself and see what I can put together for training ideas etc.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO ! I'm walking the WDW Half Marathon with my friends from the WISH board!!! YEAH FOR US!!!!!!!!!!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc
Anyone else interested?
PRINCESS VIJA
05-05-2003, 04:45 PM
I am possibly interested. I will have to check out how much $ I would have to save. Complicated for me on that front, because we are having our "big" trip this year, and then we really have to hit it hard for saving a house. Although this would be great incentive for me, as I am interested in trying to find a goal after our cruise. But, also if there are WISH'ers that are interested in going for the whole thing, and doing the full marathon, we should support them too. I.E. if you can, don't limit yourself to just a 1/2 marathon if you want to go for more. I personally would be just fine with 1/2 a marathon!;)
OK, who's going to design our lime green WISH tshirts that we will all wear???
What a great idea!
If I understand correctly then, in March of 2004 we have to make the commitment?
lmhall2000
05-05-2003, 04:54 PM
Okay, haven't even checked with DH but he never says no to Disney and our rule is every two years- I didn't say 24 months and our big trip is 9/03 and the marathon is 2/05 -- so 2003 to 2005 that's 2 years isn't it??
Now, that you've got me hooked- the big question is how do we train??? I normally walk 2 miles a day and 3 miles on the weekend- this week I have walked 3 miles a day and 4 miles on Saturday- this is quite a jump up but feels good on the legs. If anyone comes across guidelines for training let me know. I'm still 76 pounds over where I want to be so as that weight comes off I may be able to pick up the pace more. Now are we going to tether ourselves to each other so that "No one gets left behind"??? What's that Hawaiian phrase for that? Glo has it on her sig- maybe we could tie that into our slogan with WISH somehow and print shirts up for everyone! WOO HOO this is exciting!!
Thanks for the goal!!
Tara
ME ME ME ME!!!!! We emailed earlier today, and you know I am interested!
You tell me when, the registration is and where and I will be there. I think it is great to have something to shoot for...I also think having a goal makes all the hard work worth it. I am in...of course I will run it by DH, but I really think it is a go for me!!!!

It's just getting better and better isn't it??? Ok-
Vija- I agree- if someone else wants to do the full marathon- MORE POWER TO THEM!!! All us half marathoners can be there at the end of their race to cheer them on! And of course! WE will have a wonderfully creative lime green DIS/WISH t- shirt for everyone- we just have to work out the details. And finally - YES - Usually Early March 2004 will be registration- we'll be sure to post when it opens up!
Imhall- I like the tether idea, unless of course someone is really out there to make their best time! I don't want to slow anyone down! We can work out all those details as the time gets closer. ANd i like the idea of using glo's motto! We are going to try to get guidlines and tips/hints from various sources- that will help us all!
glo- registeration is online- and like I said before - I'll be sure to let everyone know when the time comes. Can we use your slogan- leave no one behind???
Wovenwonder- you and I are in the same boat! I have not started walking yet, but we'll all start together- we have 19 months to get in shape- I think that's plenty of time! WE WILL DO IT! But, can we officially declare this a WISHCON??? Or, do the powers that be have to do that??? :p Hey Kelsie... are you our official ring leader her at WISH?

Sorry -- I don't have any experience in formally training for a marathon. All I was planning on doing before was continuing to work on my treadmill, increasing both my speed and my distance until I felt that I would be able to do the 1/2 marathon in the allotted time.
I did find this on the coolrunning.com website. http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_4/144.shtml
It's about training for a 1/2 marathon!! This one also looked interesting: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/index.shtml
I haven't had a chance to read them over thoroughly yet, but it looks like this may be a good place to start!
Good luck everyone!

glo- I think you only have to submit a time if you are competitvely doing the marathon. We're not- we'll be put towards the back of the group! Unless of course- someone wants to do this competitively! Then they will have to get their times etc.
If you go to http://www.disneyworldsports.com and click on marathons- you can read all about them.

Thanks disneyaholic- that's exactly what I was going to do as well, but there's no reason why we can't do a little research and start a support group for the marathoners on WISH. In that we can give hints and places to go and maybe make some common goals together. We can also whine about hw hard it is and how fun it is .... and encourage and support each other like we do on WISH!! I think that might work out. What do you think??

Ok, I am officially in! I talked to DH about it, and he is ok with it. I guess I will just have to show him with actions that I am serious about this. Loosing the weight and saving the $ both for this trip as well as for our house. Are you guys ok with some of us running vs walking? I don't know that my feet would allow it, I have plantar fascitis, and although they don't hurt now, marathon training might be too much for them. I have always dreamed of running in a race (ok, who am I kidding--- jogging in a race ;) ) and this would be a great opportunity for it.
I haven't searched the websites for info yet, so maybe it is listed, but what time does the race usually start/finish? I would love to have my family there at the end of the race to cheer me on to my own personal victory (tears in eyes now... pass the kleenex!)
I have never been to DIScon, I assume that families are invited? would that be the same for us? wouldn't it be great for our families to see how we have supported each other?
I do think that our tshirts should have WISH on it somewhere in bold.
Thanks for the great idea karebear1!!!!!!!!

Sounds good to me! I don't know that any of us here on WISH will be doing this competitively. I know I want to do it just to say "I DID IT!!!" ;) I would bet that we can all "train" however we want to at what works best for us. times for the start of the race are 6 am for 2004- so expect the saem. That would mean that the half marathon would be over by 9:30am and the full marathon would be over by 1:30pm. I think.... They do have areas for families to cheer you on. I think htey even have mini races for younger kids>? But I'm not sure, I might be getting this confused with with the family fun run they do in OCt.

Did you guys go to the disney site where you read all about the marathon? Did you notice they only have 7,000 walkers/runners for the 1/2 in jan 2004? They allotted 8,000 spaces so they have reopened up registration. Do you think if someone wanted they could get in for this coming jan 2004? And since so many seem interested would we all try to stay at the same hotel and would they give a group discount for us? I have never stayed on site at WDW so i would be interested in opinons and a group disscusion on where to stay. I have only visited the MK so i'm no veteran at WDW. Now if universal has a marathon i'm on it! Anyone what to pm with idea's on rooms and where and details? I'm so looking forward to this already!
YES!!! Totally count me in on this! 2005, right? I am there!!!! I wish I could run it, but my blasted knees won't let me. I would love to power walk it though! Woo-hoo! Look at all the time we have to train!

Oh I wish I could come over and do this - I ran a half marathon about ten years ago just to prove I could do it ( I had a bet with my boss and I had to do it in an Easter Bunny suit - I won £1000 for charity)and I'd like to do it again properly.
Have to see about budgets - what date is the 2005 one? and is anyone going to see about a group booking, might make it easier on my wallet.
Good luck to all definitely entering - It's given me an idea anyway so I might just start training for the London marathon!

Just noticed on the site the triathlon - you can have a 3 person relay team
Disney Triathlon (http://dwws.disney.go.com/wideworldofsports/sportingevents/sportingevent/sportingeventindex?id=SPORDanskin03SporEvn)
The three-part race, open to women ages 14 and older, will consist of a quarter-mile swim through the Seven Seas Lagoon, a 9.2-mile bike ride out and back from the Magic Kingdom Park, and a 2-mile run through the Magic Kingdom Park
Relay Team
2- 3 women, who collectively complete all 3 segments of race. Relay Team Categories: a) Friends b) Family c) Corporate d) Specially Abled
Wouldn't that be cool?? I used to swim for my county so probably am still pretty fast - I'll have to see if there's one closer to the time when I can go and rope in my sisters.

Partyofsix- I did know that there were openings for 2004- they decided to up the enrollment by another 1000! But, I didn't think that would be enough , at least for me, to get in good enough shape to do this. BUT- by all means- if someone wants to do it this year- please go ahead and do it! They can still join us in 2005 and then we'll have someone that actually has experience with it helping us through. Like I said in my OP, I had planned to do this in Jan 2004- so my ressies are still set for then. Since we'll be there anyway, I think I'm gonna register to be a volunteer- that way I'll have a limited amount of exposure. AS for the hotel arrangements- I think Disney does have group ressies, and I don't see why we can't get someone to head up the hotel arrangements at least for that weekend. If this does truely become a DIScon, we'd probably have a lot more people joining us as well! Again- I think when we are a little closer to this happening we can certainly discuss where to stay. BUT since it begins in the EPCOT parking lot, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to stay at an EPCOT resort. AND I was to by my guide at the DVC that this weekend is FULL- so, we might have to make ressies sooner then later. For 04- I made my ressies at the 11 month window for BCV's and that weekend!
TigH- I thought of the cruise as well! Ahhh- great minds think alike! However unlikely the possibilities are !!
Elisebutt- there is no DEFINITE date set for 2005 yet, but the traditional time is the 2nd weekend in January- the marathons are run on that Sunday. I saw that triatholon you're talking about! It does sound fun and maybe someone will take you up on it. But I'm afraid it won't be me! I can barely walk at this point!!

I would love to try to do this. I turn 50(who said that) on 12/1/04, so this would be a great goal for me to reach in celebration of 50(would the person who keeps saying this number please be quiet:D :D )
So, I guess the time to begin training is TODAY. I go to a Chiropractor who does triathelons, so I will ask her for help for training. This would be really great to accomplish.

Hi everyone! This is a great idea. I'll put myself on the "tentative" list as well. My friend here at work did the full Marathon just this year and has already registered for 2004. I was so proud of her. She brought in her Mickey medal to show me, and has e-mailed me pictures she got that Disney took of the runners. She thought that the 1/2 marathoners got a medal too. I even discussed this with my dh for 2004, but we decided against it. I think 2005 is a great plan. My friend said that with some training, there would be no problem for me to complete the race doing nothing but walking (although I wouldn't mind doing a combo walk/jog thing). When they open up the registration at midnight, she is right on-line getting registered because they only allow a certain number of spots for "international competitors", so being Canadian qualifies us as that.
I guess I better start using my pedometer more often ;)

Did I hear someone say CRUISE?:teeth:
I vote for a weeklong WISH CON event! The marathon will be on a Sunday. I think alot of us would arrive friday evening or Saturday. (we could have a WISH meet Saturday to all get accquainted with each other) We could then do the parks the balance of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and THEN leave on the Disney Wonder on Thursday for a 3 day cruise!
I don't want to plan too much before the marathon (like a cruise or the parks) or my legs may not last for the main event!

i would absolutely love to do the 1/2 marathon. Ideally I would like to be able to jog the first few miles then walk the rest, but lots of time for planning! 2004 would not be good for me, we are going to WDW 12/03. But maybe by 2005 we could? I have always thought we should cruise as a WISHCON! oh how cool! i'm going to dream about this for quite a while, maybe just maybe I can swing it!

This is a great idea karebear1!!! I would love to join you in the half marathon. I've got at least 75lbs to lose first and a lot of stamina to build up first, but I know that I can do it. I know that we ALL can do it!

I'm with you Regina! I'd forgotten that 2005 was the year of Mom and Dad alone for the week after New Year's at WDW because of school schedules. Of course, if Mom and Dad are going away. . . who's going to mind the store? Hmmmmmmmmm.
New thought. Maybe this will be a solo trip for mom~as long as I can arrange the day or two after the marathon at school.

Put me on the tentative list. (glo, I don't know how to PM). Even if I can't make it, the training will do me good.
Any idea of a date? I teach and sometimes it's hard to get vacation.

Count me in for '05!
Training schedules can be found in Runners World (if you want to work up to running it) but in general you just work up to it. We have 19 months to do it so lets research it and set up a training schedule.
(Just an FYI - our local American Heart Association - via its "Train to End Stroke" offers "free" trips to the Disney Marathon if you vow to raise money for their organization - so if you are strapped for cash - this is a possibility.)

I think that one of the difficulties will be schedules with everyone. For some people the week before works out best, for some the week after works out best. I think that we should try to maybe focus just the weekend for WISHcon, and then maybe have mini meets the week before and the week after. That way it is a good mix to try and help out everyone who wants to be a part of this very cool idea. Maybe have our big get together Saturday afternoon to pep each other up before the big day.
Something else to consider is the resorts. It would be great to stay at the same resort, I completely agree, and maybe with a group discount it would be helpful. I know we will be on a shoe string budget and I don't know what we will be able to afford. I hate to see some people not go if this would be a problem for them.
Any thoughts on these comments?

The best time for a meet would be the night before the race. Everyone has to load up with a big carb dinner for the race. Meeting at some Italian restaurant would be ideal and then either before or after getting together to just talk, visit or walk around.

TigH- I don't know if we'll have an official registration or not, but we will have to have some kind of head count for other evnts we may organize- for example- if we decide to have a pre marathon dinner- we will need whoever wants to come to commit to that by a certain date etc. When we have that info- we'll be sure to let eveyone know about it.
Kamy- We are tossing around the idea of seeing if we can set up accomadations onsite for WISHcon, but certainly- use your DVC. We are also members- at BCV's so we will probably stay there for the week after the marathon, but for the weekend, we will probably stay at another hotel because the weekend point usuage is so high! I take it by your siggie that you are a VWL-er! Love that place!
And I'm thinking that we as a committee will only plan WISHcon for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the marathon. that way- if people want to come the week before they can, or they can stay the week after the marathon and everyone will be able to participate in the fun.

Karen~ Great idea...we might do that too, stay at a different resort for the weekend...We own at VWL, BWV, and VB...we like variety! :) And yes, weekend points are darn high!
I was thinking it would be great to get together Sunday afternoon/evening to do a dinner or a final group thing for the group...kind of a culmination of the weekend...after we do the race! LOL! :) Just ideas....we have time to plan. LOL! :)
We will stay the week after too....
I am so excited about this...even though it is so far away....just the thought of doing this makes me motivated to get moving! :)
Kamy
I am down with any kinds of meets, etc. :) :) :) I was just concerned that certain events might be closed to people not staying at the resorts. I am not good at explaining myself. I think for DISCON people had to register for the event (and make a payment) to attend certain functions. I have no problem attending meets, I just didn't want to be excluded if there was a special event included in some type of resort package. Does that make any sense? ;)

While I am not a member of Team WISH (or whatever you guys will call yourselves!), I "wish" you the best of luck in getting ready for the 2005 Marathon.
I changed my lifestyle in Oct 2002 and have lost a total of 54 pounds and went from a size 22 to a 10/12 (right now) with some more pounds to come off. I've been getting ready for the 2004 1/2 marathon and hope to run in the 2006 full marathon at WDW.
There are lots of good places you guys already mentioned about marathon training. The best advice I have gotten from the trainers at my gym are: take it slow, build up your endurance and lift weights (if you can) to help build lean muscle. I couldn't run/walk more than a mile without feeling like I was going to bust a gut. Now I run/walk about 5-6 miles 3-4 times per week. I have participated in 2 10K races and 3 5K races and had some pretty decent finish times. You guys have a long time to prepare for the race--my trainer said that most people could be prepared to run a full marathon in less than 6 months (I personally think a year is better if you are totally not in shape like I was!).
An option for some of you when you start your training is to look into a run/walk programs. I currently use a program that has me run for 3 minutes, walk (briskly) for 2, run for 3, etc.... It really helps me to be able to keep up a brisk pace without feeling like I am going to pass out-lol!
I also belong to a yahoo group called "teampenguin-disney" where we all participate in the WDW 1/2 or full marathon--nice group to ask questions and not feel like a "newbie".
Anyway--I just wanted to wish you all the best of luck and hope your training goes along great!
BTW--for someone who posted that their DH or someone was not particularily supportive. I told my DH of my plan and he was like "Yeah right, if you can pull that off I you can stay in whatever WDW hotel you want". I turned around, picked up the phone and booked AKL Concierge & BWI Concierge for 8 nights--guess he figured out pretty quickly that I was serious! :)

Jerbear-
First let's start with WELCOME to the Dis and WELCOME to WISH!!! WE love new people here!
WE are planning to go for the marathon in Jan. 2005. There are no definite dates, costs etc. except that we are basing it on what has happened in previous years. The marathon is usually held the second weekend of Jan. This year it cost $70.00 to register to walk the half marathon- that was up from $65.00 last year. If you are a DVC member- there is a small discount for registration.
We are planning on trying to get a block of onsite resort rooms, special dinners and events which will all cost $, but it is an undetermined amount at this point. We will probably not have solid figures on this for at least 6 months.
We have put up a website, if you click on the link at the bottom of my siggy-it will take you there. If you're so inclined, you can sign up to be a WISHWalker with all the rest. This si by no means a definite commitment- that will only happen when money starts to be collected!
We sure hope that you will decide to join us. The more the maerrier!

Hi to Gail and all the other new walkers!
It's so great to have you on the DIS, and WISH and especially part of the WISH Walkers!
I about DIED walking 15 minutes on the Tm this morning at an average of 3mph. What the heck am I going to do? Can I really do this folks? Or am I just kidding myself?
karebear1

Jody-
Of course you died! You died and went to heaven at the thought of walking in this marathon in 2005! You WILL be able to make this (remindme I said this ok? "*** I'm sure I'll be asaying the same thing in a few months!!) There is NO WAY I would be able to do that right now. No way! I'm proud that you were able to get up to that speed! I walked with the neighbor down the road the other day and we were walking downhill and I was having a hard time. Talk about a long way to go! But...... we will make it... you and I will be at the front of that group- just wait and see. Everyone still has 18 months to go- let's just keep encouraging each other and repoting our successes!

Okay so I know what I am asking for as my Christmas present in 2004 - airline ticket- oh yeah......
This is just awesome to have so many people make this committment to a goal right now. Just reminds me that WISHers are into a lifestyle change not just a diet! Hooray for us :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc
I have walked a 10k (Georgia Peachtree, last year July 4th, 50,000 people, runners and walkers) but nothing further - used my DH as trainer guide. I haven't had time to do any further research on training sites but do know that organizations now use "team in training" so that might be a place to search for tips, schedules, etc. Will try to look later and post any findings.
This is so exciting!!!

I was looking for some training info and found these 2 sites - one looks good for some stretching exercises (has photos) and the other had training info for beginner, intermediate and advanced walkers.
Maybe these sites will offer some insight for any level of walker and it is never too early to just look this kind of stuff over.
Will keep searching for anything else of value to allow us all a chance to be prepared!!

Thanks for those sites Grammy! Maybe when time gets a little closer and we're better organized- we'll try posting group training goals- starting with the beginners that we can all aim for.
Poohbear123- the 1/2 marathon goes through EPCOT and MK- the full marathon goes through all 4 parks, but it is not just limited to the parks- it also goes around the roads on WDW property. You can go here to get a relatively complete description if you'd like!

Whooo Hoooo! I see that I made it to Kammy's list! Yup I am planning to go for sure. We talked it over this past weekend and DH said he would be there with me. Today DH (Ted) still says he's with me on this! He probably won't walk though...not sure. He will be the designated cheerleader and I am sure he will look great in whatever outfit we have the cheerleaders wear! I slept on the idea and still feel energized about it. I look forward to my training over this time that we have to get ready.

I am hoping to join on i with y'all!!! I just recently joined all you WISHers and know that I will get to know all of you real well be then=)
I did the Disney 1/2 marathon this Jan. I did it through Team in Training. WE each had to raise $1900 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society..and they in return payed for our hotel room, race fee and also trained us along the way.
I was hoping it would be a great motivator for me to get the last 30lbs off....but I slacked off some on the training and was worried I wasn't even going to be able to finish the race.
It was the most exciting thing I have ever accomplished on my own. I got the Donald Duck medal and now want the Mickey Mouse one to match..so that means I'm thinking of walking the full.
I've been trying to recruit my Dh, sister, anyone and I have not been able to find anyone to try it with me. So, I'm so excited to find out that y'all are going to do this together.
If you have any questions about the race I can try to answer them for you. THe start of the race brought tears to my eyes...Minnie and Mickey told us when to go..and they played "I can go the distance" as we started!!! So exciting!
Now, how do I go about getting that adorable walking Mickey under my signature???? lol...thanks!

HI Beanie~ I tried to Pm you..but it says I have my Pm turned off and I would have to edit profile to turn it on..so I went to edit the profile..and don't see anywhere that I turn on or off the PM option. Sorry for my lack of puter knowledge! haha
And as you can also see ...didn't get mickey working yet=/ I changed the { around the word img to <....the first time I put a space between the word <img src ..and it showed an X on my signature..like where a pictuer should be but it didn't load . Then I tookd out the space and just put <imgsrc and that took away the X(this X showed under my wish memeber clippie after I made a post)...so I'm confused I guess you could say=)
I ended the whole line with.... gif>
think I put it all in right..thanks for your help!

Karen,
All that you would have needed to do differently was put the spaces in the IMG boxes. Without the spaces it just tells the computer to insert that actual image.

LAWalz33- we have formed a committte and we are plnning on getting answers to your questoins. We're thinking that WISHCon 2005 will probably be Friday night- Sunday Night- including walking in the Marathon that Sunday morning. Right now , our plans include seeing if we can get ressies for everyone at a discount rate, soem special gatherings at dinner on those nights and fun little things like t-shirts etc. All of these things are voluntary, but if & when we get them organized, they will need to be registered and paid for by those participating. Right now all this stuff is in the talking stages- as everyone on the committee is in and out on vacation!! When we have more specific details we'll make sure everyone knows them!! We still have 18 months to work out nad get ourselves in shape!
We are so excited about this and are happy that you and CarolA and ALexandMaddie are joining us too!! I think we're at alomst 40 WISHers for this marathon!! If you haven't gone to the new website for WISHWalkers, just click on the link under my name and that'll take you there! I have always thought the WDW Marathon would be neat to do but I am not a runner, however I do like to walk and I am seriously considering joining you guys. I would love to, but we are going on the Disney Magic cruise the week of Thanksgiving 2004, which is just a short time before WISHCon 2005, and I wouldn't want to take DD out of school again in the same school year. I am starting to think about actually coming by myself, if funds permit (I'll just have to keep using my Disney Visa LOL). Is anyone else gonig alone or is everyone bringing their families? Is WDW usually real crowded around the time of the marathon? A friend from work and I always say someday we are going to WDW together without our families and when I mentioned the marathon to her she was concerned about the crowds. I'll have to keep working on her.

I think I am ready to make the committment to go also. I plan on going solo--my first trip alone, for the first part of the week, and then DD and Dh will join me when her winter break starts, just before MLK day. It is perfect timing for me--I need something to committ me to walking, I've thought about a solo trip, and with our trip planning for DVC points, we'll have APs so the tickets will be taken care of--let's do it!!

I had decided to do the 1/2 marathon in 2005 myself (made this goal last week), but now, thinking about doing this with a group will be even more motivating!!!
I have lost 16lbs in the last 5 weeks, have joined CURVES, and am doing the Tony Little Gazelle glider too - (did 3 miles on Sunday). I know I have lots of work in front of me, but I'm up to the challenge!!

This is so exciting! Count me in. I don't know how I will manage a trip but maybe it can be a short solo ;)
How do you know when its time to register? I'm interested in the 1/2 marathon so I'm worried about getting in.
Currently I am severely overweight (80 lbs) but I run 4 days a week. I gained 30 lbs this year and my running has suffered from it
Right now I can run 30 minutes at 5.2 mph. I love this marathon goal to get me back in the swing.

Just an FYI to everyone....
I spoke with Mike at "Marathon Headquarters" today. They are planning on starting registration earlier next year. He said end of Jan or beginning of Feb the latest. This years 1/2 marathon filled in just 12 days!!!!!
I was considering doing the full marathon this year as a real need the inspiration to exercise (and what is better than Disney). He told me there is a large percentage of walkers in both marathons.

I will educate myself and see what I can put together for training ideas etc.
Yo, gang....
Contact the American Stroke Association. If you raise money for them they will train you and then send you to the Disney Marathon....Free! Get a group together...There are 50 of us in the Austin...TX area doing either the Disney (2004) or the Arizona 2004 Rock'n Roll Marathons ...or half marathon (either walk or run)...I'm doing the Disney 2004 half walk. :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: They set up a training program and also give you help in raising your funds. I would like to participate, please count me in!
I think it's great to set this goal for myself and then train for it. Right now I walk 3 miles at about that 16 minute rate4-5 times per week. I had started walking again after a 3 year lapse, about 6 weeks ago. Just walking 2 miles was taxing (asthma in heat and humidity is not fun.....)
And I am actually doing this for two reasons. One for the weight, but also because I have a genetic lung condition and I want to increase the health of my lungs.
Thanks for organizing this.

join you guys?
I went to the gym at work today and signed up after a 7 year absence, I talked to the fitness guru and he said it was a good plan for me and very obtainable given that I have 14 months to train. He got on the treadmill and showed me the 16 min. mile pace, not too bad it was 3.7 on the treadmill and if I remember correctly I USED to walk at 4.5 and run at 5.5.
I have been struggling to lose weight when all this time, I had forgotten how much I LOVED going to the gym and walking on the treadmill and running, I know if I can do this the weight will drop off.
I'm starting, I have tears in my eyes.
Please add me to the list if you don't mind me joining in.

Just an FYI iin case some people who are planning on doing the 1/2 or full with your group--registration is about 2 months earlier than normal this year. It begins on January 12th-the day after this 2004 marathon!
Here's the link to the WDW 2005 1/2 marathon info:

From the WDW Marathon Website:
Why just run when you can fly, you can fly, you can fly.
You may not be on your way to Neverland, but with a sprinkle of pixie dust this flight through the most magical place on earth will make anyone feel like a kid again. And whether you're an experienced runner or a leisurely jogger, there's something on this course for you. We believe in serious sports competition, but we believe that competition can be a world of fun along the way too.
HALF MARATHON DATE and TIME
The WALT DISNEY WORLD® Half Marathon will start at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 9, 2005. The course will take runners through EPCOT® and the MAGIC KINGDOM® Park, to a magical finish.
REGISTRATION OPENS JANUARY 12, 2004!
I REALLY want to do this. I am in such TERRIBLE shape and just cannot imagine being ready for this in a year! I think that I am going to register and take the chance. If I'm not ready then I will just do the 5K. But if I am ready then at least I'm registered.

I'm with you Jody!!!!
I fell off the wagon big time both with food and exercise, but I want to do this so badly. For me, I want to run the 1/2, but walking it is more reasonable. It appears you don't have to specify run or walk, just whole or half marathon.
I am going to register, registering is more important to me than the thought of possible losing the $80.

I think the idea of registering now is a great idea! A year is a long time to get ready for the marathon and even if you don't want to run the whole thing, you can go at a decent pace and be done. The marathon does not ever make you specify if you are going to walking or running, you can do what you want.
If you choose to particpate in some local running events in your area and you find that you have a better finish than the expected time for the last group, you can always present your certificate and get put in a different starting corral.
I don't plan to run the whole 13.1 miles next Sunday--I do plan on using my current run/walk method (run for about 8-9 minutes, walk for 1-2) and I know I will finish ahead of the necessary time.
For those who don't know me, since I don't post here often (but should), I never walked a mile until October 2002. At that point in time I joined a gym and wanted to participate in the marathon. I made it a point to get the gym at least 3-4 times per week to walk, then eventually run, on the treadmill.
Over the past year I have been very sick with 2 completely different illnesses (one was related to a kidney problem from my Atkins attempt, the other is a rare digestive disease that I am still battling along with new multiple food allergies), plus other setback-like falling down an entire flight of stairs in my house recently.
I STILL plan on participating since it will be the culmination of the dream that I set out to accomplish. Will I be the fastest in my age group--no way....will I have fun...absolutely! I think that if you guys are serious about doing it you can absolutely achieve the goal.
There are lots of great training programs out there on the web: check our runningworld.com, halhigdon.com and many others. The "real" 1/2 marathon training doesn't truly begin until 12 weeks prior to race day for most training schedules.
But, you can start out training to participate in a local 5K and go from there. No one said you can't walk slow, walk fast or even slow jog your way thru the race....as long as you can keep up a 16 minute mile (4 MPH) you will do ok.
I wish everyone the best of luck and will report back with as much info as I can about the 1/2 marathon. I'll be there until the 18th so expect my report on the 19th or 20th.
Good luck & Happy Registering!

DH and I leave in just one short week to run this year's 1/2 marathon. It will be our 2nd ever (first one this past October). A year and a half ago, I only would run to the refridgerator or the bathroom....but now a 6 mile run is what we consider a SHORT, EASY workout! :p I'm addicted! While I'll never place first, I figure I am a WINNER anyway, because I am out there DOING IT!
YOU CAN DO IT! I know you can (and once you pay that non-refundable entry fee your resolve will only get stronger ;) ) What a great gift to give yourself - the gift of good health & fitness!

But I am hoping to move somewhere in the state of Florida next year, so if I can, I will come to the World to cheer everyone on. I really wish I could commit but hopefully I will be able to come be a cheerleader.
I think everyone is doing a great thing here. Good luck to everyone in this years and next year's races.

Characters at various points along the way - and EVERYWHERE once we hit MK.....cheering crowds....music....MEDALS once we crossed the finish line....post-race party at PI Sunday night.....sore muscles on Monday...;)...you won't regret your decision to sign up. AKASnowWhite, Thanks for posting, it sounds like lots of fun along with the sore muscles! Could you give some more details when you have a chance? What time did you actually start walking/running? I know the 1/2 marathon goes from EPCOT to MK but exactly where in EPCOT does it start and does it actually end in the MK or at TTC and do you walk along the roads that you drive on to get from one park to another? I have competed in a few cross country ski events and I know what you mean about the port-a-potties, it's very starnge to see them out in the middle of a forest LOL. At the ski events they have different stations along the way where they hand out water, sports drink, bananas, and oranges, do they do things like this along the marathon course?
I hope I'm not asking too many questions but I've never done any type of walking/running competition before and I'm just wondering how this all works. I'm excited to be doing this but nervous all at the same time!

Hi Cheryl, I can answer some of those questions for you, I volunteered at last year's events.
The half marathon and marathon both start in the same place in the Epcot parking lot. There are fireworks and a great opening ceremony and such.
During the half and the whole marathon, there are stations at every mile marker. I worked at mile marker 16, which was a water/powerade station. I know there are stations with powergel and other things, I just don't know where they are.
After the start of the event, the half-marathon and the marathon participants seperate for the 3.3 miles before merging in the Magic Kingdom.
The half-marathon's finish is on Floridian Way, past the Polynesian, heading towards Animal Kingdom..
Water Stops/Sports Drink Stops are at miles 2,4,6,8,9,11,13-25 as well as both finish lines
Fruit is at miles 13.2 and 19
Powergel is at 16 and 19
Sponges at mile 17.3
Candy at mile 23
Dole fruitbowls, breakfast bars, and muffins at the Half and Full Finish lines
Hope this helps, any more questions, I'll be glad to answer.

Hey there everyone!
I've just come across this website today and sooooo glad to find this group! I've dreamt about doing the Disney Marathon every since hearing about it a few years ago... but knew I was in no shape to!
I've been working on weight loss for a couple of years now, and this was my year to ramp up the fitness part of it so I've been doing 5k walks to start the year, and my first 10k is this month - and my award to myself was to do the half-marathon!
I signed up for it the day registration opened, and I have my flights books (used airline points so wanted to make sure I got that done early!). I'm so excited.... and even though I sometimes get worried about finishing in time, I think I'll be okay.
I'm still working on weight loss too.. how do I get one of those great images to add to my postings??!

Hello and Welcome!
If you are referring to the Mickey Wish Walker Marathon image, you just need to add the following line to your signature. You need to changed the first symbol "[" to a "<" and the last symbol "]" to a ">" (without the quote marks surrounding the < and >).

I just signed up today for the 1/2 marathon and would love to be a part of WISHcon. I have been saying for years I was going to do the marathon (or at least the 1/2), but the last 3 I have either been pregnant or had a very newborn baby. I have never even done a 5K so this will be a very new experience for me. I am really excited. We are DVC members, so I will be booking my room on points. I am so excited to be a part of this!!
