Boyhood taunts drive pretzel entrepreneur
Bob Mervine

School recesses for Rick Wetzel almost always brought with them a series of taunts: "Hey Wetzel, you pretzel."

Clearly, Wetzel was marked: The one-time Disneyland Jungle Cruise operator has since built a thriving, 200-unit business around the doughy delights.

Along with partner Bill Phelps, Wetzel just opened a 3,000-square-foot shop in Downtown Disney and a small satellite location at the Marketplace.

The new operation mirrors a companion store at Disney's California theme park.

On the menu -- in addition to a variety of flavored pretzels -- are baked pretzel hot dogs and fresh-squeezed lemonade.

Even your doctor might approve, says Wetzel: Without its butter topping, the basic pretzel has just half a gram of fat and 280 calories.

I never knew he worked for Disney at one time... that's pretty cool.

I wonder how Disney feels about the crack he must put in his pretzel recipe? That's the only explanation I can come up with for how addictive they are -- they're awesome!!
