View Full Version : I guess my friend expected something different......

All my friends/neighbors/family know I am a Disney fanatic & will come to me asking questions.

Well, one friend & his family went to Disney a few weeks ago over Easter. They had called me prior asking what kind of deals they could get, what type of tickets to buy, etc.

I talked to him a few days ago & he said he couldn't believe the deal they had on the tickets - the 4 days for $109. He wanted to know why I didn't tell him about that. I told him that was for residents only. He insisted that if residents could buy more than 1 he was going to find someone he knew to get some for future trips because he thought $200 for the 4-day hopper was too much. I explained that even if he did they expired in October. He got annoyed when I told him that.

He proceeded to tell me that it was just "too hard" to take the kids to the parks over Easter. His kids are 6 1/2, 5 1/2 & 17 months. It was just too crowded. I had explained to him before they went that the parks were crowded during that time of year.

Then (& I had to laugh at this) he told me that FASTPASSES were stupid because you put your ticket in & got a pass that wasn't good for another 3 hours & then they couldn't get another one for 2 more hours. I tried to patiently explain to him that that is how the system works & he was supposed to go see another attraction while waiting for his ticket to "come due". He said, "well, I know, but that is still a stupd system".

I finally gave up talking to him & said "well, we had a great time & are going again next Easter - talk to you soon". UGH - some people are so hard headed!!

FYI, he's now my friend. The more people that think FP is stupid, the more opportunities per day to walk past him in line!

Well, I think your friend has somewhat of a point. It IS hard to tour WDW, handle Fast Pass backtracking etc., with three kids that young. I guess it wasn't too bad though, or he wouldn't be going back. Diana

Easter would never be a first pick for someone going to WDW for the first time. In fact, I was persuading people NOT to go at that time if they could avoid it. Sometimes people just make me stop and wonder....

We were ther over Easter and fast pass saved our life. Actually the Sat before easter I was quite surprised at the amount of people in MK. We had been on BTM, SPLM, Toms island, JC, POC, Aladdin,
and all before 10:30 it was great. It wasn't until we hit fantasy land that we had to start getting fastpasses. I think some people go looking for the neagatives.

Cute post. Thanks for the laughs!!! Enemas!!! LOL!!!!!

Really I agree with AnnaE4 some people just don't get and and they never will. Reminds me of one family I know who acually said to me after they had gone to Disney that there just wasn't anything for their kids to do there. WHAT!!!! Needless to say I will NOT be talking to them about Disney (or for that matter not much else) in the near future!!

Some people are no fun!!

Yep. It's amazing, isn't it? Maybe Fastpass can't be appreciated by someone who has never toured WDW without it? Well, whatever it is, it's okay by me, I'd rather be surrounded by other Disney fanatics like myself than grumpy non-believers. ;)

I know a family who went to WDW and here's what the mom told me: "My kids didn't like it. They liked Las Vegas better. It's nicer out West. I wouldn't waste my time or money on Disney World again". Yeah, yeah, yeah... You know what? Fine with me. Keep away from MY DISNEY WORLD! :D :D :D

 Don't you just hate when you bust your behind to help a friend and they throw the..... why didn't you tell me about this or that..... on you!! Makes me want to SCREAM!!!!!
We took some friends of our with us last year for the first time.
We have been to WDW 26 times, I do my homework, and I stay on the boards all the time. They have NEVER been, never even read a guide book. When we got down there to check in the WL,
while standing in line she throws on me...So and So that's my cousin and works here said that they give out FREE park tickets all the time all you have to do is ask for them!!! Yeah RIGHT!!
She kept on arguing with me,right up to the front desk till I was so aggrivated I just blurted out the the CM, "Do you think we could get some of those free tickets ya'll give out to whoever asks"???
Of course the poor CM didn't have any idea what i was talking about. And needless to say my friend was soon laying down the $$$ for her passes!!!!
Do you know after that she STILL insisted that they DO give out free passes, it was just that I didn't know who to ask!!!!

OMG, Brier Rose . . . what a terrible start to your trip. I sure hope it got better from there . . . . .

I find it especially annoying when friends ask for advice about WDW, then proceed to totally ignore what you've told them. These are the same "friends" who return from their trip complaining about lines, crowds, cost of food, etc.

Poohbear123
05-01-2003, 02:11 PM
that went to WDW and said it was too expensive, and the lines were too long, and he didn't have a good time and I asked WHY he didn't get the 4 day pass and use fast Pass.....his answer: "Whats THAT?" I said "I guess NOW you know WHY you didn't have a good time!" I never explained it to him, cause he wouldn't listen anyway!

Another good one is my MIL. She always says "You're going there AGAIN"? Like we're going to our own executions or something. And she has never been there herself, and has no desire to go there. How can you bash a place you've never even been to?

On a happy note, my husbands friend from work told DH he was planning a first time trip to WDW with his wife, 2 children and mother. He asked if we could bring some maps back for him. We gave him a map of each park and transportation map and suggested staying on site. Well they booked a villa at OKW and before they went he had the kids mark off what they wanted to do at each park on the maps. They also planned where to eat and asked me to look at their ideas afterwards:) They also had me write down anything that was down for re-hab and the E-ticket nights for their stay. I was pretty impressed. Anyway-they LOVED WDW and want to go back ASAP. See what some planning can do.

Maybe the people that can get free passes just for asking are the same folks that can get tickets to any major sold out event that you want. Example: SuperBowl, NBA Finals, NASCAR Bristol night race ticket, etc!!!!

I have talked with more than a few people who have gone to WDW and said they would never go back. Of course, these are the same people who just show up one morning (usually at the MK) with no idea of what they want to do or even what is available to do and then have a terrible day trying to figure out what to do. Fortunately, these are also the people who bought one day passes, because of course you can see it all in one day. (I say "fortunatley" because they are only blocking the sidewalks, stepping on my heels, and whining in the park for one day and the next they are on their way home -- or somewhere else).

I go to a lovely bar here in Central PA most Friday nights for wings and a pitcher of Ale. I see the same guys I join each week, sitting in the same stools, most of them wearing the same tee shirts, and when I tell them I'm off to Disney the following week, they say "you're going there again?"

Disney is not, to me, some place you see and then move on. Like my favorite food (or my favorite sports bar), it's something I like to do often.

One of my good friends is going for the first time (in over 12 yrs) with her DH and 3 kids. I've been helping her alot. I want her to like it so much that I'm so nervous for her!! LOL She was originally going May 10-17th but had to change it to June 8-15. So, of course I'm all worried that they are going to hate it.....it's going to be hot and crowded. I just want her to *love* it as much as I do.

CuteKatCar,
I sure hope your friend and her family go and have the time of their lives,BUT if they don't, PLEASE don't fall into the same trap I did and feel guilty. I was just like you, and I wanted my friends to have a vacation that would be so special and magical, the way it is for us, and when they didn't, I some how felt responsible.
For them it was the exact opposite! They said they would go back, but only because they feel it's some sort of obligation to their dd.(although happily they won't be going back with us).:D
Believe it or not I don't think they even WANTED to experience the magic!! They're too "refined and reserved" to just let loose and be all sentimental and goofy! I'm sure all ya'll know the type.
What's so sad is that they want their dd to be just like them.
She sat in my lap during Fantasmic!, and was completly in awe. I spent the whole show looking at her face, watching her take it all in,experiencing the magic for the first time.I had tears in my eyes, her parents never even thought to glance over to even see if she was enjoying herself. Afterward, when I asked her parents if they liked it, they just said, Yeah, it was OK. Then I said... Well, your dd seemed liked she really liked it...and she said,
No, I asked her,and she said she didn't really like it that much!!
I know that was a flat our LIE!!! I don't know if she was just trying to hurt me or what, but she did that the whole trip. The only other park they even went to was MK, and they only stayed for 3 hours, and said they were going back to the resort, cause they had more fun there.Spectro was even playing that night, and I begged them to at least let their dd come back for that, but they refused...just sighed and said,Oh I don't think she'd even be interested in that!!!
NEVER EVER EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!
Can ya tell I'm still a little aggravated??????:D

I've been getting my FREE passes for years!!! :D As a matter of fact, I just called to check on my reservation and requested my FREE passes. I think I have to call back again. Because when I asked for passes, I think I got disconnected, I never did get my confirmation this time. Maybe It was because someone was telling a joke. Or that's what I think, because I could hear people LOL in the background. Oh well!!

We leave next week and have neighbors that have been saying how sorry they are that we're going and spending all that money to have a horrible time!!?? They went 20 years ago with 7-8 kids who were all teens and did one day passes, stayed off site and had a bad time - I'm also sure little planning went into it. It makes me mad every time I see them to have them say How bad it will be. We had a wonderful time last time and expect the same this time. We know exactly what we want - to see that look of wonder on our kids faces and to experience it again for ourselves - how can that be bad??

Twenty years ago all there was was the MK!! Do they realize things have changed a little? The story about the little girl at Fantasmic made me cry!! What is wrong with those people? We always try to help friends who are going to WDW for the first time too. Most of the time they like it, but I can't say they really "got" it. It is hard not to be upset but some people just can't let go and enjoy. We also know people that go to the same place year after year. Oh well.... that's life!

My know-it-all SIL went once with her family.....of course since she ALREADY knows EVERYTHING, she didn't listen to any of my advice! They thought it was ok (stayed on-site, 5 days in parks), but won't go back because "there's nothing for my kids to DO there"....

Make sure that you take pictures of everything and everyone with smiles on their faces. Also, take video and come back, invite them over and show home movies of your wonderful vacation to WDW. It may take seeing that people DO have a wonderful time in order to bring them around.

Then again, maybe they are hopeless...

I guess I'm lucky, so far people have heeded my advice, and have had a wonderful time. My brother and SIL are going to take me with when there kids are old enough to go to WDW. They figure who better to go with than me.

I have had both experiences. I had some close friends that had never been. The dw really wasn't very excited about the trip because she thought it was just for kids and it would be boring for the adults. I just gave her one little bit of advice. They stayed off site so I told her that as they drove on the property to leave the adult behind and let herself become a kid again. I (but mostly she) was lucky because she must have thought that was interesting advice. She came back raving about how great it was, what a great time they had and thanks for recommending it.

Then I had the couple that I think I mentioned on this board before that I spent tons of time with, gave them videos, books, etc. only to have them go and spend a week just walking the streets. They thought the ride entrances were just going to gift shops so they never went into any. The only attractions they saw were the ones that were out in the open and they considered them to be for kids and never went near them. So they missed all the good ones, and almost everything in Epcot and Disney Studios (this was before AK). They came back cursing me because they had spent big bucks (got one of the big packages, against my advise). They were determined to never go again but they did go on a cruise the next year. I suspect they just stood on the dock and watched to ship leave, saying to themselves, gee, this isn't much fun!

 :p :smooth:

Either you "get" the magic or you don't.

I "get" it :teeth: Some people just aren't open to the magic. They should go to their local amusement park instead. That means one less family in front of me at Splash Mountain :teeth:

Okay - I started this thread, but I have to add on now................

Just saw an acquaintenance today who was in Disney over Easter at the same time we were. I asked her how their trip was. She said, "Good, but it was a waste for my 2 boys." I think they're 13 & 15. She said they had been their about 1 1/2 years ago & it was just the same things they had seen then. She said they'll do a cruise or Mexico next time. Although she did say her 4 year old daughter enjoyed it.

Obviously, they didn't get the magic!!!

I think that it is hard for boys of 13 and 15. They are trying to appear cool, and I guess it just isn't "cool" to have a great time at Disney with your parents. I sure hope my preteen doesn't get that attitude... she better not!;)

I am still laughing about the people who thought everything was "gift shops". I saw the original post about it and shared it with my mom and we laugh about it all the time!

What? These people cannot go into a shop out of sheer boredom or curiosity? If they would have gone into ONE, they would have seen that it was a ride and figured it all out! They are probably the same type who run through a mall, renaissance festival, art show in ten minutes flat and declare they saw "nothing". There is no hope for these DRY types.

My 2 oldest ds are 13 and 15. We went last Sept--had a great time and are going back this Oct. There are things they like to do at Disney, and they do enjoy going. Of course, like everyone, there are some things they dont like. So we dont make them do that stuff. The have a good time int he parks, they love the water parks. Have a great time at DD.
Those people who go and come back whiney and unhappy--I think they like it like that. Some people just enjoy finding the bad things instead of the good things. I personally dont see how you could go to Disney with everything that is there and not have a good time somewhere!!

These posts remind me of our closest friends, another military family. Last year when Disney was offering their Heroes Salute (military member got a seven day pass for free, and fifty percent off for up to five people) we tried to get them to go with us. Our kids are the same age, so we thought it would be fun. They tried to discourage us from going. They had been once, middle of the summer, with a three month old baby, no stroller, ten years ago. All they would say is how much they hated it, how hot, how boring, couldn't even remember which park they went to. The only place they went to that they liked was seaworld. The baby got diahrea (probably from dehydration since it was hot), they didn't have a change of clothes. The mom doesn't ride anything, they didn't see any shows or parades. Husband could only recall one lame ride, a log flume ride with stupid animals singing.
When we returned from our trip, raving about it, and showed them our pictures they were shocked. Couldn't believe we had a great time, couldn't believe all the great pictures. The lame log flume he had ridden was Splash Mountain.
Now they can't believe we bought DVC and are going again...
(and again, and again).
Some people....you can bet we won't be asking them to join us anytime soon.

I helped a friend plan for her family a few years ago. When she got back I couldn't wait to ask her about what kind of time they had. "It was ok. Don't see that it's much different that 6 flags." What? "Did you see Illuminations?" No. "Did you do ?????" No to almost everything. No wonder they thought it was no better that 6 Flags. Why did they waste my time if they weren't going to do anything I said? These folks make 4 times our annual salary but dined no where but counter service with their kids. No wonder they were sick of burgers and fries by the time they spent a week there. I told them about so many of the wonderful dining experiences beforehand. "We don't spend that kind of money to eat with our kids. That's only for when adults go somewhere without them." Whatever...
