London shows (plays/musicals)

My folks will be in London in May. My mom is keeping my kids starting Thursday night while my husband and I go on our 10th anniversary trip for the weekend. Thursday is her big :eek: birthday! I want to surprise them by getting tickets to a play/musical in London (if possible). What shows are playing, where can I get info, and can tickets be sent to a hotel to wait for them?

I would suggest contact the hotel concierge where they are staying they'll be able to get the tickets etc and that way they'll be at the hotel.

IMHO the good ones are :

Mamma Mia - I've seen this 6 times
Les Miserables - very moving
Tell me on a Sunday - new one woman Andrew Lloyd Webber show, very good
Bombay Dreams - colourful and fun, the music is great
Chicago - I still haven't seen this
The Lion King - oh dear I still haven't seen this either
The Phantom of the Opera - FANTASTIC
The Rat Pack - supposed to be good

www.Ticketmaster.co.uk is a good place to buy theatre tickets and they can be picked up at the theatre.

I agree with Sam on Mamma Mia and Les Miserables, seen both these a couple of times and they are brilliant. Chicago is fantastic and another good one, if its still running, is Blood Brothers.

The Lion King at The Lyceum Theatre is EXCELLENT. The costumes and music are brilliant. We are hoping to go back sometime in the future before it ends.

Saw Les Mis about 9 years ago very good. Also saw on Broadway in February Mamma Mia! What can I say other than excellent especially if you love ABBA. Again Ticketmaster is the place to book as I used their US site for Mamma Mia! And had no problems at all.

I saw My Fair Lady in July & loved it. Would your mum prefer something where she knew the story?

Hard to say. My dad as a general rule doesn't do theater. My mom's a Disney buff, and loves most musicals (Les Mis is an exception). I think my dad would enjoy Chicago or Lion King, just for the theatrical side of it. Hard to predict, though. :)

Another thumbs up for The Lion King which I've now seen twice (last July and a few weeks ago).

Sitting right behind us was a more mature American couple and their adult son and they seemed very entertained. It's a truly brilliant production.

I also use ticketmaster.co.uk for tickets and can recommend them.

The are a few companies that offer theatre packages with dinner either before or after the show too.

If you want to consider a non musical I would highly recommend The Woman in Black - brilliant or for a comedy, Stones in His Pocket is really funny.
