Back in 2001, perfectmatch300 (Nancy and Barry) posted a note on the Community Board about visiting Six Flags in Aurora (Ohio) and wanted to know if anyone would be interested in meeting them there. Since it was Memorial Day weekend, we decided to have a DISmeet picnic at our house so that Nancy and Barry could meet some of the NE Ohio DISers. We had so much fun that we decided to make it an annual event.

Starting at noon on Sunday, everyone is invited to our home for a cookout. We will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, chips, and soft drinks. The local DISers have graciously offered to provide fruit, cookies, and moral support as they have in the past. And don't forget the guavaberry coladas.

This year we will have the premiere showing of Barry Hom's DIScon 2002 multimedia presentation. I have seen a preliminary version and it is a lot of fun. I especially love Barry's music selections.

Make a note on your calendar. Send me a PM or email for directions. We're only a 16 hour drive from Orlando, a 12 hour drive from Atlanta, and a mere 6 hour drive from Chicago.

Hope to see you there.

I just saw your Monday breakfast DIS-meet. One of these week-ends, I'll make it.

I might be able to help here.... You could do Cleveland Hopkins...

I tthink there is a smaller airport in Akron, but don't quote me on that.

I know of the general idea Towncrier lives in.. and its pretty acessible from the highway... probably I 77- to I 271.

Cleveland traffic is not bad at all, compared to larger cities.. Its a piece of cake compared to say like Chicago, NYC, Philly, etc. I can't estimate how long of a drive it would be, but maybe less than an hour...

Hopkins Airport is/was pretty small in comparison to larger airports as well.

We hope to be there too...:bounce:
Gotta get up bright and early for that 4 hour drive though..

Thanks Cindy.

This might be possible. I think SW flies to Cleveland from here!

I'll be there!

And yes, Southwest does fly into Cleveland Hopkins.

This is going to be a great one!

Akron/Canton airport is about 35 minutes away from our house. We like to fly to Orlando from there on AirTran. I once made it from Cleveland Hopkins airport to our driveway in 19 minutes, but I might have been going a tad over the speed limit.

I should mention (again) that there are lots of nice motels in the area and that NancyIL had very good luck using priceline last year to get a great rate on a room. If anyone needs info about any specific motel (or airport), send me a PM and I'll try to get back to you ASAP.

We're at the Baymont again for the night of the picnic. We stayed there last year, courtesy of NancyIL, and found it to be very nice. Plus, it was very convenient.

Who wants to videotape this meet? I belive TC has a camera. We can do a John Con video! :)

Barb

Interesting idea, Barry. I've never video'ed a meet before. This may be a first! ;)

Towncrier
04-27-2003, 02:40 PM
I looked into the possiblity of putting a webcam somewhere during the meet, but all of my internet service providers strictly prohibit hosting a webcam. The only one that has any allowance for webcams states that the image can only be updated once an hour. Not very interesting if you ask me.

If our digital camera is back from Fuji in time, I'll try posting some pictures in pseudo realtime. As for videotaping, I'll leave that up to someone else. I can provide the camera and tape(s), but I'm going to have my hands full cooking and DISing.

Not sure we can make it this year! Dh is preaching at his NEW church in Amherst and my brother will be in town from California. So I don't know what time we'll be rolling back into Summit County. :(

If we get back early enough, I may just have to leave everyone at home and go by myself! :)

Just wanted to offer for anyone who lives along the way from Columbus to John's, I should have room for at least 2 in our car. So if you don't want to drive alone, let me know :)

WebmasterBarry
05-13-2003, 02:12 PM
So is Barb videotaping?

Hmmm...I was wondering if we should pitch a tent in John's lawn and make it Camp Towncrier. We can sing songs around the campfire and be chased by axe murderers. :)

A few people had asked me what they could bring to the picnic (besides themselves). I've been very bad at getting back to those who have PM'ed me and I apologize. I hate to burden folks who are coming from out-of-town with the added hassle of finding something to bring. Besides, we always have way too much food anyway. Just ask my kids.

So if I haven't gotten back to someone who wanted to bring something (and you still want to bring something), please PM me again.

I can hardly believe that the Memorial Day weekend activities start a week from today at Cedar Point. I hope to see a lot of DISers next weekend. Bring your photos, scrapbooks, pins, and anything else to share on Sunday.

See you soon. :)

Barb
05-16-2003, 11:37 PM
I hope to bring a little of everything mentioned. ;) I plan on making a dessert, bringing my pins, and my latest trip pictures. Now I have to make notes so I remember! I can't believe it's almost here!! Where does the time go!?!?!!!

Just back from Sam's Club with the non-perishable food items and another 6 foot table. Sue is madly working on todo lists. Next weekend will be here really soon. But not soon enough. :)

I don't remember if I posted this before, but I will reiterate the menu:
Hamburgers/Cheeseburgers
Beef Hot dogs (Ballpark)
Cheesy hashbrown potatoes
Soft drinks
Potato and tortilla chips
Crispix mix
Veggies
Cake and ice cream

If you have special dietary requirements (aka turkey burgers, veggie burgers, turkey hot dogs, or anything of that sort), please let me know before Friday so that we can have something for everyone to enjoy.

See you soon!!!

We usually clear out our attached 2-car garage and setup the picnic tables inside the garage. EpcotKilterFan is letting us borrow a tarp "thingie" and we purchased a 9x13 screened in shelter. The only person who will get wet if it r---s is the chef.

The chef won't need to worry about ruining his hair in the rain. :)

I've come to expect this sort of comment from Barry. Afterall, he's forced to look down on my "dome" whenever we're together. The glare has got to be intense from up there. :teeth:

I wish I could be there. One of these years I'll be able to travel to some meets...other than ones held at my sister's house!

Everyone have a great time...I can't wait to see pictures when it's all over.

You know Buffalo is not that far from here. DH had relatives living there Tonawanda and I forget the other one close to Tona...We've driven there lots! Maybe some day.

When I got home from work yesterday, I saw that the UPS man had delivered my special package from St. Maarten. I just love UPS. Brown never lets me down. So anyone who might have been hesitant to come for fear of not getting a taste of a yummy Guavaberry Colada can lay those fears aside.

Plans for the Sunday picnic are well in hand (meaning that Sue has everything under control). I'll be away from the computer from 6PM tonight until late Saturday night, so if you need directions to our home, please PM me sooner rather than later.

See you Sunday. :teeth:
