I am going to use this thread to finally start keeping track of my food intake and to eventually add my daily excersize also. That treadmill isn't in my kitchen to cook with afterall! I weigh in every morning so I will use this space to be accountable for that also.
:D
starting 03/15/04 I will be recording my 'move to the Beach' journal as I switch from the Atkins way of eating to SouthBeach!

I was always one of those skinny girls thru high school. I started putting on the weight in my adult years. I gained alot with DD(20) but managed to get down to 124 with diet pills. Gained it all back with DS(14) and have managed to put on more every year! In April 2002 I was at my highest of 247. I am only 5'2'' (and 40 years old).
http://www.wovenwonder.com/castaway_cay_7.jpg
I started my low carb lifestyle in June 2002. By the end of December I was down to 215 but put on some weight after the holidays. I started the WISH challenge on day one (January 30th) at 222. Right before my hysterectomy in July 2003 I was at my 'low carb' low of 207. So close to ONDERland that I could taste it! My body began a really bad struggle after my surgery. I stayed on program about 98% of the time and have gained and lost the same 5 pounds or so and just cannot get down to that low of 207 again! March 15, 2004 I began The SouthBeach program to try and jumpstart my metabolism again. I've also started back at Curves on a regular basis.
My DH and I have been married 21 years -- he and my beautiful two children are the love of my lives. I want to be healthy and around for a LONG time for them and the grandchildren that will come along one day.
I was originally eating controlled carbohydrate [pretty much Atkins] and have since switched to SouthBeach. I know that 'Controlled Carb Eating' is a lifetime change for me. I had horrible IBS prior to this way of eating and it has now regulated itself. I can go away now without having to worry that a bathroom will be a minute away. That was worth the change in eating in itself -- the weight coming off is just an extra bonus!
A word of warning for those considering low carb eating. The first week I went thru horrible sugar withdrawal. My body must have been very addicted. I had major headaches and felt flu like. It was rough getting thru the day. I stuck it out and by the second week I couldn't believe how great I felt!

Weight on Tues. AM (start of Alex challenge): 219
(I had some cauliflower-official start won't be until Wed!)
Wednesday:218
Today:217
I ate more than usual today. I thought I would be LESS hungry!
cheeseburger (no roll) 9am
chicken cheesesteak (no roll) 11am
pot roast with horseradish 3pm
Red Lobster for Supper (21st. anniversary) Filet Minon, skewer of Lobster Tails and Scallops, Skewer of Grilled Shrimp, and drawn butter. I left feeling SO THIRSTY so I am a little worried about what might have been in that drawn butter. Hopefully it was just lots of salt.
I'll be looking at the scale tomorrow morning with one eye closed as I know I'll be retaining water.

(I new that I would have water retention today!)
9:00 am - 1-2oz of cheddar cheese
1:00pm - chicken cheesesteak [no bun]
6:00pm - stromboli
(it was basically lots of melted mozzarella with ham and a little salami. I just slice open the crust and use it as a bowl while I eat the insides out).
I also drink water and diet soda's and iced tea throughout the day. I need to work on my water intake --- and will start to journal that soon (to show accountablility).
Off to NYC on a bus trip tomorrow! I'm sure it will be a day with much more excersize than usual -- I am just hoping that I can keep up with everyone! )

I have been part of Webmaster Alex's Atkins challenge this week. I decided this wasn't going to work for me during the 'different' day that I was going to have in NYC today. That is okay --- because I've learned so much about my eating by following the challenge for most of the week -- and for that I truly thank Alex for opening my eyes. I personally need my veggies. I have a spastic colon (IBS) and just was not feeling as good on that end of things without them. But I've come to realize that I don't need the extra low carb 'treats' that I was eating. I now know to use the bars, shakes, and even nuts to get me thru those special instances and not use them to get me thru every day. Today WAS one of those special instances.....
I was up at 3:45am to get ready for a bus trip to NYC. This was mine and my daughter first time to visit the city. We had a wonderful (but busy and exhausting) day and will surely visit there again! We didn't get home until after 10pm and I was aching from head to toe! But, it was a good kind of ache that I haven't experienced in way to long!
They served juice, donuts, and coffee on the bus trip to NYC. First came the juice, then the donuts (when were they going to bring that COFFEE?) then finally came the coffee. As I politely said no thank you to the juice and the donuts -- I realized that I truly did not WANT them. I wasn't just doing what I thought was best to be a good little girl on my low carb plan.
1:00pm Lunch at Macy's - Smoked Turkey Cobb Salad with Ranch Dressing --- it was heavenly!
5:00pm - TGI Fridays stop before having to board the bus again at 6:15. I ordered a large diet coke and a decaf coffee and asked to please keep both refilled! I had no desire to eat -- but boy was I thirsty after the day I had! Once again -- as my tablemates were eating dessert, shakes, and soup -- I was feeling very content and undeprived drinking my soda and coffee!
8:00pm during the bus ride home I had another decaf coffee, a bottle of water --- and realized that I was hungry. I had 1/2 of a chocolate browie Atkins Advantage bar and 4 pieces of pecans. I was satisfied --- and felt like I had a succesful day in more ways than one!
:)

If you are wondering -- "How can she eat this way and think she is going to lose weight and be healthy?" here is an explanation from a scientific view - (PAdisMOM is a biology teacher)
Your body breaks down carbohydrates through a process called glycolysis, followed by the Krebs cycle, and then electron transport chain. All a bunch of (really exciting!) biology stuff. BUT in the end it has tuned glucose (C6H12O6) into water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). So that's where all the stuff goes. It doesn't "melt away". This process makes ATP, which is the chemical your body uses for energy. Ever time you move you use ATP.
Fats and proteins break down through basically the same process, but enter the steps at different points along the way.
Does this help? I love this type of stuff, but my students usually think I'm crazy!
PS: Your body is programmed to burn carbohydrates first. That is why Atkins works. If there are no carbohydrates to burn, then your body will break down fats.

11:30am - Tossed Salad w/Ranch Dressing
Very Thin Sliced Steak
It was actually meant to have as a sandwich but I disposed of the bun.;)
6:00pm - Dinner at a Chinese Buffet!
Sampling of chicken wings, green beans, shrimp scampi, and Beef Tenderloin. And two 'generous' helpings of crab legs with drawn butter. VERY GOOD! And I managed to stay on program. I just LOVE this way of eating. Although I stayed on program -- I know the food was way over salted and it will cause me to temporarily retain water (again).

We are heading off to my parents place at the shore for the weekend. I have been waiting for this time of year to finally get here! I really look forward to these weekends away. Ofcourse, they always present challenges as far as eating goes. But, I think I am in the right set of mind right now to get thru this weekend anyway! I just LOVE Grotto Pizza and look forward to having it during our trips to the shore. I am going to stick to Chicken Ceaser Salad tonite and maybe eat a piece or two of pizza toppings only. I am considering allowing myself one day each Holiday weekend to have a few alcoholic drinks and my Grotto pizza -- crust and all. But, I may change my mind by the time those holiday weekends come along. My favorite 'beach drink' last summer was Crystal Light Raspberry with a little diet ginger ale and Parrot Bay Rum! I've come up with a substitute that I think I will also enjoy. In place of the Rum I am going to use DaVinci Coconut SF syrup.:D

As of monday morning I didn't have any 'ill effects' of all that low carb candy! That is kind of a catch 22 though --- I didn't want the awful stomach pains and the bathroom problems that sometimes go with it. But since I didn't have 'any effects' I guess that means that my body wasn't 'disposing' of the sugar alcohols and might have been treating them as 'sugar'. UGH.

This journalling has been so helpful to me to look back on. I am noticing that I am eating way too much cheese. I think every item I've had the past two days has had cheese or cream in it. Now I'm going to try getting no more than one serving each day of cheese [I can't give up my chicken cheese steaks]. Hopefully cutting back on the cheese will get me 'moving' [in more ways than one!] I've got that constipation thing going on that even mega doses of metamucil don't seem to be helping right now. I'm ready for a good Whoooooosh!

I have also felt so yucky --- retaining water yucky! I just don't know what else to do. I'll work on keeping the cheese and cream cut back to a minimum and upping my water intake!

5:00pm Crab stuffed mushrooms [there was breading in the crab stuffing], Salad with bacon dressing [yes, the real bacon dressing with sugar], pickled red beets.
Somehow I think I'll still be feeling yucky [or even worse] tomorrow. Time will tell. I know in the past this sometimes helped to get me jumpstarted and on my way to losing again. I am in the right frame of mind and 'unplanned - free for all cheating' just is not a problem for me. I'm sure I won't have any problem getting right back on track. :D

I still haven't decided if I will splurge on these things this weekend or just wait until the 4th of July. As of now -- I don't really feel like I even want them ---- so I'll just wait and see.
I probably won't have any Journal entries for the next three days -- as we will be at the shore and I won't be keeping a detailed record of what I eat/drink. No weigh ins while we are there either. The scale stays home!;) I will make an entry to note if I stayed on program or decided to splurge a bit.

The weekend at the shore was so much fun! The weather was yucky --- but it just felt so good to get away! I ate ALOT of food --- but chose low carb snacks like meat and cheese and never strayed with my food choices the entire long weekend. At 'Grottos' I had the pizza toppings but not the crust. No ice cream. I stuck to diet drinks the first two evenings but last night I decided to have a 'big people' drink!;) I had diet rite with Captain Morgan. Then I had a diet sprite with Morgan but only drank about 1/2 of it. I was surprised that I got a 'buzz' on two drinks. I had a nice time and don't regret having the drinks. Back on track for tomorrow (tuesday). I have no idea what tomorrow mornings weigh in will bring to me --- but I'll be stepping on the scale with one eye closed [afraid to look]!

Great weigh in Jody. I just read your thread about BC pills. I'm on the pill too. I have been for a long time, and I'm 38! I'm ready to be done with them. I've heard that you can have worse PMS when off of the pill. I find that hard to believe  . Anyway, this was one of those months where my TOM was hardly existent, and I didn't take off any weight. :(
Anyway, I'm on Mircette. Let me know how you do on the new pill.

great job, Jody! (I hope you don't mind me posting).
My suggestion to you though would be to not weigh yourself every day. It's easy to get frustrated doing this, as some days you retain water, etc. I do it no more than once a week.
keep up the good work!
Gregg
I am in my fourth week of Atkins. The first two weeks I lost 9 pounds. The third week I didn' t loose any weight. I'm in the middle of my fourth week and am hesitant to get on the scale until the week is over. I have been very strict on this diet and in fact like it better than WW. Has anyone experienced loosing weight and then not? How long does it usually last? I don't want to give up but I'm becoming a little discouraged.

Hey Jody,
Congrats on your Atkins 1 year anniversary. You are so strong to stick with it. It looks like your weight is creeping down again.

I have a fibroid uterine tumor. We have been 'watching' it for about 8 years now and it has grown a little each year but not big concerns. I went to get an ultrasound 2 weeks ago. [routine] and heard from the doc today. It has grown 'massive' is the word she used PLUS has an ADDITIONAL tumor that has formed. This additional [smaller] one is apx the size of a newborns head according to her explanation. She said that I must have something done NOW. Hysterectomy is the only option due to the size and signifigant growth. Since it has had such signifigant growth rather quickly I have to see an oncologist on 7/2 and my gyn is concerned it could have turned in to cancer. Recovery for this type of surgery is 8-10 weeks!!! I have so much that I have to get organized in my home life as well as my work. I will be working practically day and night trying to accomplish this and likely will NOT be on the boards much. I'll try to keep my journal updated but not much else. Keeping busy will hopefully keep my mind off of the worry.
I am at automatic high risk for surgery due to my weight. That is sad. To think that this could have been gone already [the weight] if I would have stuck to it way back when.
I have to just look forward right now.......

Jody, the anesthesia used these days is so much safer. I had my gallbladder out and weighed more than you weigh--it was the open procedure not the laparascope, too. Don't worry about that right now, concentrate on getting better. The one thing you want to be sure you do is to get up and move as soon as they let you--you won't want to do it, but you will not only heal more quickly, you will stay safer (heart and lung wise) if you move as much as possible.
{{{HUGS}}} my friend. I pray that the tumor is not malignant. You will feel so much better after the hysterectomy, honest you will. I am a little surprised that they would watch something like this for 8 years.
Well, now they are going to get you all fixed up. You will lose weight and feel better. It is just a very scary situation. Remember that we are always here if you need us, and we care about you a lot.
Keep us posted.

Thank you to EVERYONE for your good thoughts and prayers. It's going to be a LONG week. But hopefully it will go fast since I have so much to get caught up with. I work out of my home -- managing a trucking company. I do it ALL - dispatching, accounting, payroll, taxes --- etc, etc. It is only ME -- so no one to fall back on. It would be hard for someone to come in and take over because I know what to do but it isn't 'written' anywhere -- I just 'know' what needs done -- and I do it. So, in addition to working ahead, I have to try and write 'instructions' for my job in case I can't get back to it right away. Same with at home --- I take care of most everything. Thanks Again - it means alot to me.:D

Dear Jody ~ I feel your pain :(
I have been following your diet thread and you are such an inspiration!
I am so sorry to hear about your health problems and that they have gone on for so long. I have been down the road w/fibriods and after 2 opinions had the hysterectomy ~ thankfully w/o any complications. I felt like a new person afterwards. Something like this is always so scary, but please think positive and keep the faith ^i^, you are not alone. I pray you can put the cancer idea out of your mind until you know what you are dealing with. You will cross that bridge when and if you have too. Your doctors know what is best and will do everything possible to make you well again. The worst part will be the waiting, but we are here for you any time you feel the need to talk.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Take care, please try to keep us informed and let us know if there is anything we can do.
Best wishes,
God Bless ^i^

This is my 'time of the month' week. I guess it will be the LAST one --- as I'll be getting my hysterectomy on 7/18th. I am keeping my ovaries so I will ovulate but not 'bleed'. I guess I'll still go thru the 'time of month' water retention cycle then too, right? Can anyone recommend a good book to help me better understand all this?
We were at the shore for the holiday weekend. For the most part I did really well. I had decided ahead of the time that holiday weekends would be 'allowable cheat' weekends for me. I had a couple Captain Morgan/diet cokes. On the 4th I had a slice of shoo fly pie and ice cream. On sunday I had a slice of pizza - crust and all. And sunday evening I had a cheeseburger with the bun. I am up 2 pounds but I know it is a combination of TOM retention and also my 'off eating' this weekend.

Well ---- It's been OVER 2 MONTHS {May 14th} since I was able to trade up a clippie. I have been on program but it has been a true struggle for me --- My body just was NOT cooperating. This sure gave me a wonderful feeling on an otherwise gloomy day! I couldn't wait to share it with my WISH Friends. Now I am at a total of 40 POUNDS lost since starting this low carb way of eating with 15 of those pounds lost since the WISH challenge began!
I Promise to be back posting faithfully on my journal as soon as I am home from the 'Castle' and feeling up to it!:D

Thanks to all that have given me support during my surgery and recuperation --- it was appreciated so much. I am having trouble getting back on the low carb track though. I had gained 6 pounds from the IV/liquids during my hospital stay. As of 7/29 I had lost what I put on from surgery even though I had been eating high carb foods. NOT a good thing to get me back on track. We went to the shore for rest and relaxation [and too much eating] and I GAINED back 5 pounds during the week. UGH.
But I'm back now folks and gearing up to get committed to this way of eating that I KNOW works for ME! So watch for my daily journaling starting friday 8/8. I think I'll start the star challenge also to keep me on track.

Hang in there ~
it takes awhile to get back on track once you become a Hyster sister...LOL.

We spent the Holiday weekend at the shore. I had my planned cheats [bye bye cheat free star]. I had corn on the cob for dinner an evening as well as a couple mixed drinks during the weekend. I had a good time and felt that I controlled my 'cheats' well considering that this was my first week back on plan. I'm back up to where I started last week but I'm going to be working very hard at getting that number to move. I'm so committed again and it feels TERRIFIC!:D

You sound like you're back on track and rarin' to go! You've been eating so healthy the past couple days! I'm sure the scale will reflect all that effort soon, so don't get discouraged! I cooked one 16z bag of cauliflower in beef broth until the cauliflower was very soft. Put the cooked cauliflower in a blender and puree until smooth. Add some of the beef broth to get it to the consistancy that you like your soup. Cook a second 16oz bag of veggies [I used broccoli/cauliflower mix] until tender. Drain and pour the puree mixture over the cooked veggie pieces. Season as you choose --- I used some butter, crazy salt and freshly ground pepper. Very Tasty! For a non-KISS meal I would have pureed w/cream cheese and/or topped with some shredded cheddar when serving.

Jody, you look like you're back on track! That little bear has been such an inspiration for me and it looks like he's working for you too!
I hope the scales are being kind to you. Even if the scale isn't cooperating yet, if you keep eating this way, it will have no choice but to show you smaller numbers!!

I have lost 4 pounds over this two week cheat free period. I am doubtful that I will make my ONDERland by Christmas goal though -- as I was 211 this morning. I'm still not sure about Thanksgiving. I'm planning on making a low carb pumpkin cheesecake plus my whipped cauliflower to contribute to the meal.

Your low carb pumpkin cheese cake sounds yummy. Which recipe are you using?
I'm also doubtful about ONDERland by Christmas. I have 7 pounds to lose and have only maintained or lost a half pound the last few weeks. We can keep trying, though, but I won't drive myself crazy if it doesn't happen on time.

From lowcarbfriends.com website:
Pumpkin Layer Cheesecake
Ingredients:
Filling:
2 pkg (8 oz each) Cream Cheese, softened
1/2 cup Splenda
1/2 tsp Vanilla
2 eggs
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Dash each of ground cloves and nutmeg (I used Pumpkin Pie spice)
Crust:
(instead of a graham cracker crust)
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
3 tbsp butter
1 tsp Splenda
How to Prepare:
Crust:
Melt the butter and mix it with the Splenda and chopped pecans. Press the mixture into a 9 inch pie pan. I pressed it into the bottom and as far up the sides as I could. Bake the crust in a 350 degree oven for about 8-9 minutes.
Filling:
Mix softened cream cheese, Splenda, and vanilla until well blended. Add eggs and mix until smooth.
Set aside 1 cup of the batter, spoon the rest of the batter into the crust. (Be careful not to "disturb" the pecans too much!)
Mix the pumpkin, spices and 1 cup of batter together, spread on top of the plain batter (there's where you get your pumpkin layer.)
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 35 - 40 minutes until the center is almost set. Cool, and refrigerate for at least 3 hours.
Carbs Per Serving: ECC: 5.2 grams
I get requests for this recipe by non-LCers for holiday parties!
I serve with whipped cream.

I can't believe it -- but I DID IT -- and it feels oh so good to stay in control -- even on a HOLIDAY!
Thanksgiving
We went to Friendly's for breakfast and I had the most awesome steak fajita omelet. I had 1/2 of it at breakfast and saved the other 1/2 for mid afternoon.
Dinner tonite at MIL's [remember -- the carb queen's place]. I had a larger serving of Turkey, Mashed Cauliflower [which I brought along], and a small serving [couple bites] of sweet potatoe. I passed on the mashed potatoes, filling, corn, lima beans, chow chow, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, fruit salad, pumpkin bread... on and on! For dessert I made a low carb pumpkin cheesecake [I have it posted in the Hearth]. It was actually very good --- and more of my sugar free dessert was eaten than all of the other desserts combined! Everyone liked it.
I am feeling very full and bloated tonite. I did eat more in quanity than I've been use to eating BUT I stayed low carb and I am so proud of myself!
Next step is low carb until Christmas ---- but NOT THRU Christmas Day. I will have some of the families stuffing on Christmas --- I look forward to that every year! But until then --- cheat free for me!
wovenwonder

I am VERY frustrated! After being cheat free for 21 days - I GAINED 2 pounds this week! Something isn't right
week one -- stayed the same
week two -- down 4 pounds
week three -- UP 2 pounds
I've been eating mostly meat and low carb veggies. With eggs about twice a week and the occasional 'carb smart' klondike bar or sugar free pieces of candy. I also had a sugar free cheesecake for Thanksgiving and the day after a piece too. I've been doing 'low carb' for a year and a half so I DO know what I'm doing. To be honest --- if anything, some days I don't get ENOUGH calories in because I'm just not hungry. I certainly am NOT worried about eating too much. I do NOT get my water in like I should. And the only other down fall that I can think of is I usually have some sort of cheese every day. I've decided to go to the doctor and ask to have bloodwork done -- I'm going to make the appointment today.

Jody, here's a  for you, sweetie!! You've been doing so well! I know it's hard when the scale seems to turn against you. :( I like the idea of checking with your doctor - maybe some thyroid tests are in order?? I've looked at your journal and often wondered if you're getting enough calories and enough fat, but you've been at this for a while so I trust you know your body and what it needs.
Hang in there, Jody! You'll figure it out. You probably just need a little tweak and things will start moving right along for you. In the meantime, you're feeding your body such healthy food and NOT that carb poison that will make you age faster and feel awful and can lead to many other health problems. Celebrate all the good things you're doing for you, even when the scale isn't moving.

I'm sheeplishly peeking in the door to say hello to everyone! I'm still on program -- at least 95% of the time and maintaining. Haven't had any real losses though in quite a while. A couple months ago I was under alot of tests for thyroid, etc. And it showed up as 'borderline'. I have a goiter and have to get it checked in a couple months again.
I'm still tredging on ----- and thought I would check in a little more often. I may even begin to food journal here again --- it always is very helpful to me.

Jody, always great to see you!
Sorry to hear that your loss isn't going quickly but the borderline thyroid condition could have LOTS to do with that.
However, your body will still do better on healthy food than it will on junk so you've been doing the right thing by staying on plan.
Hope to see you around here more! I miss you when you're gone too long! ::yes::

Hi Jody,
It's nice to see you checking in. I know what it's like to have a thyroid problem. Ever since mine started acting up over 12 years ago, it's been a struggle losing weight (or trying not to gain it).
I haven't lost anything in about 6 weeks now. When you have a thyroid problem (I take medication), your body doesn't seem to send the right signals and/or your metabolism is all screwed up. Nevertheless, I am sticking to plan and haven't cheated. I haven't been exercising which I know is a big part of the problem. Have you been doing any?
Just eating healthier is a good thing. I guess the weight will come off with time. Hang in there.

Have you read the book, "Living the Low carb Life" by Jonny Bowden?? It is GREAT! Really takes a look at all of the low carb diets out there and has tons of other stuff, too. If you're ever at a bookstore, check it out. A great read.

I stuck to my eating plan [Atkins] last week and managed to gain two pounds. I'm just not getting anywhere like this. I am STILL a couple pounds away from my low of July 2003 right before I had my hysterectomy. Ever since then -- I just cannot get the scale to budge. So --- I'm moving to the Beach for a month to see how I do. The Beach? SouthBeach that is! I'm going to do two weeks of phase one and then two weeks of phase two. After the four weeks I will evaluate my progress thru the eye's of the scale and also how I feel. Then I'll decide if this new way is better for me or not.

Make sure that you drink your water. Set up a notepad and measure. (bust, waist ,hips, thighs, upperarms and calf) Measure weekly. You may not notice pounds melting but you will see inches go. It keeps us hanging in there when the scale freezes. Try to schedule a walk (20-30 min) at least 3 times a week and you will start dropping fast. Good luck! I've been on for a month and love it . ( 11# and 11.5 inches) If you have been on Atkins , you'll do fine. Just watch the high fat stuff. Go to the low carb boards for recipes. There are some great ones out there.

03/18/04 - Day 4 on SouthBeach
AND -- I have to say that I am 'lovin' it at The Beach!:sunny:
B - 3 egg omelet w apx 1/8 c. LF Shredded cheddar cheese
S - Lg SF Mocha Milano [w/skim milk] YUM! I get these at Borders Books cafe. It is basically a skim milk Latte' with SF Hazelnut, SF Chocolate and cinnamon. Did I say YUM?
L - I cannot believe it is 2:30pm and I'm only NOW eating LUNCH!
apx 1 c. mixed cauliflower/broccoli
w/ I can't believe its not butter spray
1/4 grilled b/s chicken breast w/ a little hot sauce
The 1/4 chicken breast is actually about 3 oz. A pretty good size. I guess a 'whole' chicken breast is actually two joined pieces. I'm actually eating 1/2 of the one piece - so 1/4 of the whole breast.
D - 1/4 chicken breast on bed of romaine
with diced red & green peppers and mushroom
kens northern lite italian dressing
S - Small Skim Latte'
Another good day with the water - 6 [16oz] bottles.

Friday 03/19/04 Day 5 on SouthBeach
It was a busy morning and I didn't get anything to eat. I had a cup of coffee on the run. I could have worked something in but I knew that I was taking a few friends out for lunch and was worried what my choices would be. It didn't start off very good - when I asked what the veggie of the day was I was told that they only served veggies at dinner time? And this was a pretty classy place? There went my idea of having a piece of chicken breast and a veggie. I ended up with a HUGE specialty salad - but only ate about 1/4 of it.
Cabroilet Salad - Lettuce, chicken breast, shredded cheese, bacon, hard boiled egg, scallions w/ranch dressing.
I entered my estimations into fitday [estimated on the high side] and came out with about 500 calories for this ONE MEAL! And the bad part is that we are heading back to the same place with family for dinner tonite. [At least they will have veggies THEN :teeth: ]. Its after 2pm and I just started on the water but I am determined to make it another good water day!::yes::
S - Lg Skim Milk Latte' w/ sf caramel flavoring
D - 1/2 grilled Chicken Breast
Salad w/lite italian dressing [very little of this]
Cooked Cabbage w/hollaindaise sauce
Also had a Captain Morgan Spiced Rum w/diet coke.
I hardly EVER drink and just this one drink was making me feel pretty good. I hope I don't regret having the alcohol. It was a fun night out. I did end up doing pretty good on the water today. At least Five 16 oz bottles down!

Saturday 03/20/04 - Day 6 on SouthBeach AND.....
The first day of SPRING!:sunny:
No Breakfast today.
Brunch - Bed of Romaine w/bits of green pepper, onion and tomatoe. Topped with a scoop of chicken salad and basil dressing. Lg Skim Milk Latte' w/sugarfree caramel flavoring.
this afternoon I was cutting up a whole bunch of different varieties of bologna and pepperoni and cheeses. This is for a tray at my son's banquet tomorrow afternoon. I had about an ounce of meat and an ounce of cheese.
Dinner - 1/2 very thin grilled chicken breast
Tossed Salad with regular ranch dressing.
[the only low fat dressing available was a raspberry vinagarette. I figured I was better to go with the full fat dressing because the RV would have alot of sugar.]
Cup of French Onion Soup
[this soup was VERY salty!]
I did fair on the water today. Could have done better.

Sunday 03/21/04 - Day 7 on SouthBeach
Today was a different day for me. It was much more of my old 'Atkins' day than my new SouthBeach day -- that's for sure. I can't even enter my food into FitDay because I don't know where to start. I've emailed Friendly's to ask for nutrition info and maybe I'll go back and enter it once I receive this info.
B - Friendly's Steak Fajita Omelet
w/sour cream and salsa
L - Grilled chicken Leg/Thigh without the skin
about 1/2 cup of layer salad
1/2 of deviled egg
1 bologna and cream cheese roll-up
D - quite a few pices of hard cheese [apx 3 oz!]
toppings off of one small slice of pizza
S - 1/2 cup of the part skim ricotta dessert
sweetened with p.butter and choc sf davinci syrups
Hot Tea
Water for today was lousy.
I was having a really EXCELLENT week. Yesterday was an 'okay' day but I really retained alot of fluid from that cup of onion soup that was VERY salty! And with todays day [alot of high fat foods] I'm a little worried that I won't be ending my first week of SouthBeach as I had hoped. I had been down 6 pounds as of yesterday but I was up one of those this morning. Well, tomorrow morning will be my one week weigh in and time will tell.

Monday 03/22/04 - Day 8 on SouthBeach
Well -- this morning was my 'one week' weigh in. I am down 4 Pounds! Its great to have 4 less pounds than I had last week at this time but its still depressing to have been down 6 [and hoping for one more] and then to gain 2 of those pounds over the weekend. This has taught me that I will have to really watch my weekends closely if I want to have a succesful end to my week!
B - Mug of carb countdown milk heated hot choc style
2 eggs scrambled
Heading to start on the water early today! That was something else that I slacked on over the weekend and I'm sure it made a big difference. Plus I don't cook on the weekends and sometimes its difficult to find good choices eating out.
S- part skim mozzarella stick
L - 4oz chicken breast
on bed of romaine with
Newmans Olive Oil & Vinegar Dressing
Lg Latte' [skim] type coffee
D - slice of turkey breast w/cilantro lite mayo
Romaine w/red onion, green/red peppers
Kens lite italian dressing
S - Diet Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate
only 25 calories - 0 fat - 3g net carbs - 2g protein
Another good day with water! I could really cut back my calories and carbs if I would give up those Latte's --- but it is something that I really look forward to and it often helps to get me thru the day. My calories today were just under 1,000 -- and I was very satisfied and never felt hungry.

When I'm finished eating I am at the point where I could surely eat more but I'm trying to eat only when hungry and just eat until that awful hunger feeling goes away and not eat until I feel 'full'. I've actually been quite satisfied with what I'm eating.
I'm doing pretty good on the water this afternoon. I am not a water drinker but yet I have to admit that the more I am drinking the more I am actually craving it!
Headed to Curves to workout this afternoon. I did three times around the circuit. I haven't been there since starting the 'beach'. For the past week or so I was having some diziness and I wasn't sure what from so I just stayed away from the working out. I have hadn't any episode's the past two days. It felt GOOD to work out again. I'm hoping to get that treadmill back upstairs so I can start walking. I need to really get working on this if I want to make it thru the 1/2 Marathon in January!

[Where did the time go?] I can't believe the time for the Cruise is almost here! We've had this trip booked since early June of 2002 -- yep, that's right - almost 2 years ago! That is when I started low carb eating and I surely thought that I would be at GOAL by now!! Well, at least I'm FINALLY heading in the right direction and during this entire time I've NEVER lost sight of my goal or felt like I was giving up! I've truly made a lifetime change!

Wednesday 03/25/04 - Day 11 on SouthBeach
and I think I am really liking my little Beach Vacation!::yes::
The day I went for my hysterectomy --- EIGHT MONTHS ago I was at my low carb 'low' that morning of 207. I was going to have body parts surgically removed. What more could someone trying so hard to lose weight want? Losing body parts surely would mean losing a couple pounds -- right? OH NO -- not for ME! I lost a couple pounds in body parts and managed to gain 5 Pounds! I went off program for a couple weeks. I wasn't cooking and friends and family were bringing in high carb meals. I was feeling really lousy and the comfort foods provided just that -- comfort. I got right back on track and stayed on track about 98% of the time. But that wasn't enough! I would go up a few pounds and down a few pounds but in EIGHT MONTHS I never again reached that low carb 'low' of 07/18/03 when the scale hit 207. I'd get to 208 but then I'd gain a few pounds again. It was so frustrating! When I started SouthBeach 11 days ago I was at 214. Just 10 days on the program and I've droped 7 pounds. Yep, that's right I've once again hit my low carb 'low' of 207! That's a total loss now of 40 Pounds! Can you tell how happy I am???!! And I am feeling really positive knowing that I will soon have some NEW Low Carb 'low' numbers popping up. And these will be ALL TIME LOW CARB LOWS for ME! Yep, SouthBeach has been good for me. I think I'll stick my sun umbrella into the sand and stay awhile!:sunny:
And now for TODAY ----
B - serving of Metamucil Soluble Fiber
Slim Fast Low Carb Chocolate Shake
S - convenience store decaf coffee topped w/
apx 3 oz low fat vanilla cappaccino
L - 3 eggs w/ 1 oz low fat shredded cheddar
mixed with 1/2 cup cooked/shredded spinach.
I guess this would be '3 eggs florentine'.
S - I got a 32 oz diet fountain coke
D - Chicken ceaser salad w/lite italian dressing
Did excellent on the water. I drank ALOT of water today. I feel like I'm floating away. I think I may be retaining a little though-- I hope it doesn't catch up with me.

After completing 14 full days of Phase One on SouthBeach I have to say that my little corner of the sand is pretty HOT!;) Last year [2003] I had managed to lose and maintain a loss of 10 Pounds. Most of the Atkins weight I lost was prior to that in 2002. And the stats for my first two weeks on SouthBeach are.....
Start week one 214 <-4>
Start week two 210 <-5>
Current 205!
On to week three which will start 'Phase two' for me. Phase two is continued during the duration of the weight loss period - for how ever long that is necessary. Phase two allows you to slowly add back in carbs low on the glycemic index. You can add how ever many your body will allow while continuing to stay in 'weight loss mode'. This includes some fruits, high fiber breads, long grain brown rice, whole wheat pasta's, etc.

In Phase Two I can begin to add back some high fiber grains. I was looking forward to having one of the 'Atkins friendly' subway wraps again. Congratulations on completing Phase 1 and more importantly for losing 9 pounds! :bounce: :bounce:
Welcome to Phase 2! You have such a variety of foods to choose from and everything is delicious! I wanted to try one of those Subway wraps too but I think the calories on the Atkins one, like you mentioned, is just too high to justify it. I'm sure it's delicious though. I notice commercials for several Atkins salads and I might try one of those.
Anyway, keep up the fantastic work! You'll be in onederland in no time!!!! :)

Hey Jody, I'm on Atkins but try to keep my calories down, so when I go to subway, I just have the turkey wrap ( turkey, lettuce, tomato, onion, sometimes cheese and mayo).
What makes the calories so high are the bacon and dressings/mayo. If you just eliminate those, and have your lite dressing on it, you should be ok. What you have and what I have are almost the same, even though we are on different programs.
Thanks for all of the good info. :sunny:

It was an odd day today. But pretty usual for a Sunday for us. I'll have to plan ahead a little more for Sundays. We usually always go out for breakfast. And dinner is at MIL's. I ate more 'Atkins Like' today but it was pretty much the best I could have done for dinner with the choices that I had. Fat ended up really high today.

Jody, I don't know too much about South Beach, but I noticed that your caloric intake was way below 1200 (health professionals advise that you do not go below 1200 calories per day) for several days. This might be the problem. Perhaps you need to up your calories, and see how that goes. Good luck with your continued weight loss.

3 weeks on SouthBeach
I gained one pound this week
YES, I'm frustrated [once again]
I'm going to tweak things a little bit and try to get my calories up around 1200 each day.
B - 3 eggs over medium
S - Part Skim Mozzarella cheese stick
L - 20 oz decaf coffee topped w/cappuccino
Chicken Cheesesteak [no roll]
D - Salad - Romaine, skim mozzarella, lite italian dressing
S - 12 oz decaf coffee topped w/ cappuccino
Lite Yogurt
I found a package of 'chicken minute steaks' at the grocery store and made up custom nutrition info using the numbers from that label for the meat. I was very surprised that 'chicken' minute steaks were just as high in calories and fat as 'beef' minute steaks. That just amazes me! When I cook or eat beef steaks they have such a greasy feel compared to the chicken.

I was really trying to get at 1200-1300 calories. I guess I will have to try harder! Who would have ever thought that I would be having a hard time eating ENOUGH food? I picked up a few things at the store that I thought would work great to add in an extra few calories each day. I got light yogurt and also some apples and natural peanut butter.
I'm writing this summary on tuesday morning and I did manage to lose the one pound I gained last week plus one more. So maybe my problem really was eating 'too little'.
