<b>Please come out and tell us a little about yourselves. This is a great place to share (ups and downs).
So, please say HI :) The first post is always the most difficult.</b>

Not exactly a lurker here, but I must say things are a bit quiet today. Where is everyone? I said I would only post once today, but I think I've chimed in on more than one post. What happened? I'll bet I'm not the only one who "Doesn't want to talk about it", regarding the past weekend. Which is why we should. Good and bad. Good to inspire, bad to let go. I learned something this weekend. I learned that I cannot handle salt! It is my enemy. It is what causes me to gain, and discourages me. However, learning is good, and now I know that if I have a salty day, I'll be back to normal in about a week, if I keep my resolve. I also learned that a Carbolite bar may be just what the Dr. ordered after I've had a salty day. Salt, though stored in massive quantities in tissue, seems to be absent in the place I need it most. I'd risk a day in the loo to help with the secondary salt problem.:p
So? What's your story people? Get it out there, so we can get on with the business of healthy living. No matter what your clippie says, health starts from the inside out. Don't keep all the garbage inside. If you have an outpouring of goodness, please share it with us. We can all benefit from each others success! OK, I'm off the pedestal. Who's next?
Keep the Faith!

I just mosied into chat tonight and found out about WISH. Great idea!
Where do I start, and who can direct me to good info on Atkins?

I'm glad you found us Luv2Roam! Chat was fun last night --- I'm glad you enjoyed it. There are many low carbers here. Check out the low carb recipe's at the top of this board - or just click HERE (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=247238) .
Grab an 'official' WISH clipart to show that you have made the first step to a healthier YOU. WISH = WE are INSPIRED to STAY HEALTHY!. Instructions to add the clippie can be found HERE (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=326403) .
This is a Link to a great webpage entitled A Beginners Guide to LowCarbing (http://www.geocities.com/cherilynn82000/Newbiepage.html) - I think you will find it to be helpful!
My first week was HORRIBLE on low carb. I was a true sugar/starch addict and had awful withdrawal symptoms. If you feel lethargic, flulike, with headache -- please stick it out the first week -- as you will likely feel better than EVER after that.

<b>Luv2Roam</b>! It was wonderful seeing you in WISH chat last night. I'm really glad you decided to join us here on WISH.
We have a wonderful support group, lot's of really good low carb recipes and bunches of fun. Grab your clipart and join right in.
I'm on Atkins too, I've had wonderful results and enjoy this way of eating.
Jody is right, you may experience some withdrawal and feel pretty bad until you get over your carbohydrate addiction. Hang in there and don't give up and you will feel better after the withdrawal than you have felt in a long, long time. You will have more energy, too.
I'm not a lurker, Kels, but I see we drew one out from hiding last night. Luvinit is with us now, isn't that great?

I guess I'm considered a lurker since I don't do the clipart thing. My connection goes tons faster if I don't have the signitures etc. on.
But I've been reading, posting, and enjoying the support you show each other. I started April 1st. The first 5 pounds was easy, but I seem to have hit an early plateau. I know I'll get there though!

I'm in the process of de-lurking.
I'm 23 (soon to be 24....June 19th....favorite color is red....taking notes? :) ), and I live in Buffalo, NY. I've got a 2 year old Boston Terrier named Lucy to whom I have a ridiculous attachment! I pay the bills by serving as music director for a local catholic church. My ultimate career goal is to be a recording artist. I've been playing piano for 17 years now, and have been singing even longer than that. I was a french/spanish dual major in college, but discovered that although music isn't nearly as lucrative a career choice as international business, it was what I loved and had to do.
As for my weight loss, I'm on Weight Watchers, and have been since March 6th of 2002. I've lost 138 pounds total, 18 of which have been in conjunction with WISH. I've gone from a 54 waist to a 34/36 waist. I have 5.4 more pounds to Weight Watchers goal (so I don't have to pay anymore), and 25.4 until I hit my personal goal.
I guess the first post IS always the hardest. That was pretty easy!! :)

Hi there. I’ve been lurking here lately. I lost about 25 lbs. on Somersize a couple of years ago and have been maintaining ever since. I’d like to lose ten more pounds, but it seems impossible! So I’ve been looking for ideas on how to lose those stubborn last pounds, and also getting ideas for maintaining a low carb lifestyle. There are some things I like about Somersizing (all the fruit and vegetables you want) and some things I like about Atkins (you can eat nuts, no food combining restrictions, and lots of prepackaged products to choose from). So I’m just following the parts I like from each and we’ll see if I can maintain that way. I really like the support, inspiration and ideas here, but I’m not sure whether being here is a good thing for me, since it seems to make me focus too much on food! I find myself making cheesecake and buying SF/LC treats and looking forward to trying new recipes, which is not good since I don’t have a lot of self control.

Hi Pugsley!
You've come to the right place to get the support you need! I am doing low carb --- but found myself eating way too many 'legal snacks' and it was getting away from me. I'm following Alex's challenge this week -- and it has opened my eyes to all of the legal low carb junk that I was eating. After a week or two I'll try to slowing add in a few things -- but try to limit the treats. I'm finding that by keeping it simple -- I'm not focussing on the food too much.
Good luck with your plan! Sounds like you've created a doable one!

<b>disykat</b> Why don't you go to your user cp and edit options. Go to thread view options and check "no" where it says "Show user's signatures in their posts?".
<b>Now</b> go add the WISH member clipart so the rest of us can see it :) I love being able to recognize other WISHers on other boards, it's fun and it makes me feel like I'm always among friends :)
<b>Dan</b> you are my hero. I hope you know that. I hope you will post more and more on WISH. You inspire me and motivate me and besides that you make me smile. So get to posting, kiddo. Don't make me have to come over there, I'm bigger than you now ;)
<b>Meriweather</b> Nancy! You lurk??? I'm hurt and after we met at DISCON and everything? ;) Just teasing you.
Oh, come out of hiding and join us. We don't bite, you know. Oh, <i>okay</i>, we don't bite hard?
Hi <b>Puglsey</b>, hmmm, perhaps we need a code to add to the subject lines for posts about food or perhaps we should all just say FOOD in addition to the subject line. Then you could avoid the posts about food and delurk.
How about it? Won't you visit us more often? You would be a help and inspiration to us all. You have lost weight and kept it off. That is awesome.
Okay, shall I add anyone to our official list of WISHers? Anyone taking the challenge?

Thanks for the welcome, wovenwonder & nativetxn. I’m going to stick around – I really do enjoy reading about everyone’s successes and challenges. And I do like to hear about new recipes. I’ll just have to learn to read about food without wanting to eat it all. wovenwonder, yes, it’s those evil “legal snacks” that get me down! I think just the sweet taste sets me off, even if it’s not really sugar. But it IS nice to have something sweet to turn to in emergency situations (like Easter!). I won’t be joining any challenges here because I don’t think these ten pounds are EVER coming off unless I starve myself, and that’s not going to happen! I guess I’m just not meant to be skinny. I’ll be happy if I can just get through life at a healthy weight and without the need to constantly obsess about food. I do feel wonderful about having kept the weight off – I feel like I have some control for the first time. And it’s all thanks to low carb eating, since that’s something I can live with. I’ve been inspired by the people here to get more exercise, and I’ve started walking to work and doing Pilates. Thanks everyone!

Ok... here I am...
I've been inspired by all the WISH clippies... and I have to say for the first time, I have been upset by gaining weight.
I got a physical for my new job, and I SWORE UP and DOWN that that doctors scale was broken. (Evil doctor scale!) I was actually shocked that I had gained that much.. even more than I was 9 MONTHS PREGNANT !
I used to be a fitness/gymnastics instructor, but haven't had that job or working out in a long time. I do walk a lot in my job, and have been drinking water.
I'll be blunt.. I'm 5 8 and about 170. Yes, I hear, but you are tall.. and bigger boned... but to me its still overweight. I would love to see 140/130... but right now 150 is good.
So, after my initial shock, I've been drinking water, eating less. I got a hold of some WW point values, and really watching it well.
I've got a point list, counting out points and doing water. Being away from home and working is good, if I'm in the house, I eat...
So is it too late for the Challenge? I've even convinced my DH to try as well...

I'm so glad you are here Cindy! Grab a clipart -- you will find instructions HERE! (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=326403) Will your hubby be joining us on the boards too? It will be great for you to have the support system with him.
Have you ever seen Dotties Weight Loss Zone website? It is packed full of info for those on Weight Watchers! You can find it right HERE. (http://www.dwlz.com/) :D
Vija has a weight watchers challenge (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=361037) going right now. I'm sure she would love for you to join in!
Welcome.

<b>Meriweather</b> Okay, Nancy, I suppose I could put you down as a quasi lurker ;)
If you decide you want to join us. We'll be waiting for you right here with open hearts and lots of motivation and support for you. You don't have to go on a weight loss program to be part of WISH, you know. WISH=We're Inspired to Stay Healthy. Not being overweight is just one part of staying healthy. I think if you visit you will see that we have lots of fun here and a wonderful group of caring people.
Visit us whenever you can.
<b>Pugsley</b> You don't have to take the challenge to be part of WISH. I just like to see the WISH clipart in everyone's signatures on other boards. It makes me feel like I'm among friends :)
It sounds like you have made some amazing progress already--lost weight and kept it off. Very impressive. I'm glad you will be visiting WISH occasionally. You are a good example for me to follow :) You can help me learn how to keep the weight I've lost <i>completely</i> lost.
<b>Cindy B</b> I'm so glad to see you here on WISH. It doesn't matter how much weight you want to lose you-are a great addition to my support group. It's never too late to take the challenge. Welcome.
Good for you, taking control of your weight now before it increases more.
Are you taking the challenge, then? May I add you to the official list of WISHers? I hope so. I think you would be a great addition to our support group. Please visit us often?

Well I'm not lurking anymore, but to tell you a bit about myself...
I'm almost 45. I have 3 girls (10, 13, almost 15) Married and like Dan I am from the Buffalo area...Kenmore actually...just north of the city. I work in a grocery store as a store trainer, I've been with them for 12 years and most days I love my job.
I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I have gained almost 150 pounds in 18 years of marriage.
Turning 45 and seeing woman my age at work become grandmas made me realize (plus some bad health issues) that I want to be around to see my girls walk down the aisle...I want to hold their babies in my arms...and if I don't do something now I won't be around to see that happen. So as the old saying goes...today is the first day of the rest of your life!
So, I'm going to try very hard to get rid of half of me...I am determined to do it this time...not just for me, but so I'm around for my family!

Oh Nancy, honey. I gained at least 100 pounds in 31 years of marriage.
I can't wait to have grandchildren. It's so sad to have to borrow other people's grandchildren :(
Nancy you have taken the first step-you have made the decision. I have absolutely no doubt that you are going to accomplish your goals. You won't do it overnight but you <b>will</b> do it.
Just keep on keeping on, don't give up. You can do this. We will help you.
Onward and downward, my friend.

Hi everyone (sheepishly raising hand in the corner). I'm officially de-lurking. For those that don't know me, I'm Desiree'. I'm a 28 year old mom of 1 daughter, Devyn (almost 9). Before I got pregnant, I was always really active. I played sports my whole life and really enjoyed it. I was actually underweight then. I think I probably weighed 95 lbs. Then I got pregnant. I gained 50 lbs during my pregnancy and have probably gained about 20 more pounds since I gave birth. I dont have a scale (I'm going to buy one today) but last time I checked I think I was about 170. So I guess I'll say that's my starting weight.
I got inspired to lose the weight for a couple of reasons. First, was actually kinda silly but after watching the movie "Bend it Like Beckham" I realized that I wanted to be 'fit' again. I miss not playing sports, and I realize that there is no way I can do it now, since I am so very out of shape. Secondly, Chris and I are talking about getting married sometime next year. Of course it's not "official" yet, but at least I have a semi-goal now not just for an upcoming wedding, but for my well-being too. Chris also wants to try to lose some weight too.
Since last Saturday, I have sworn off Sodas, coffee, & alcohol (except for special occasions). I have only drank juice, water, and smoothies so far. Right now I have no desire for a coke either. I have been getting bad headaches but I wonder if it's because I'm having caffeine withdrawl? I'm also starting to eat sensibally and cut back on meals. Just basically watch what I eat. Other than that I am planning on starting to exercise, do sit ups, squats and lunges. I want to slowly work my way into jogging too. But I dont want to go anywhere alone nowadays. (We've got a Serial Killer on the loose here in Baton Rouge). So my jogging days will be limited to when Chris and I have the same days off. I also want to take up tennis again to work my way back into other sports.
Anyways, this is my game plan. I would like to see myself down to about 120-130. I'm 5'4".
You guys and gals have given me inspiration! :)
Off to my crackers and large water for a snack!

Hey Des! Who knew you were a lurker? Color me surprised :teeth:
I'm really glad you decided to delurk. We have a great support group here, you are going fit in really well. Can't wait to see you participated in WISH :) You are much braver than I am, I've never confessed my starting weight. Perhaps when I lose a little more I will work up the courage and do that.
So, I'm adding to our official WISHer list and put you down as eating sensibly. That headache you have today is most likely from caffeine withdrawal. I sure hope it goes away very soon.
This is just so great! {{{HUGS}}} my friend. You are going to be so successful at this weight loss stuff. Just wait and see :)

Welcome....isn't it nice to be "out" of the lurking mode?
Way to go we are here for you!!
I am 32 and have played sports my whole life too...and I started again last year (playing coed softball), anyhow...its the BEST decidsion I have made...
I now play about 4 days a week...I signed my DD up and Manage her team...and playing with 6 -8 yr old girls is more than a workout than you can imagine.
Get out there and PLAY!!! DONT WAIT!!!! It will really help keep you motivated!!

Thanks Katholyn and Luvinit!
I'm really encouraged right now. I just hope that I can keep this level of encouragement up. The weather seems pretty nice outside today so I'm going to go drag Christopher out of bed and we're going to go jog.
About 3 years ago I had given up pretty much everything with salt and cokes for a whole year. I just ate right and exercised when I could and I ended up loosing about 15 lbs. Of course I could have exercised a whole lot more. But that in itself was an accomplishment for me. That proved to me that I could do it. Now I'm going to do it again, but this time with better results!!!!

I set a goal for when I would come out of lurking. Since that goal has been met, here I come...
Hello all! My name is Tia. I am 24yo and have been overweight since high school. I am married to a wonderful man and have a beautiful 2 month old DD. Prior to my pregnancy, I weighed 230lbs. In the last 2 months, I have lost the 25 pounds I gained during my pregnancy, which was my goal before coming out of lurkdome.
My main reason for trying to lose weight is my DD. I would like to be healthy enough to run and play with her for decades to come. In the short term, I want to be in good enough shape to chase her around the park. In the long term, I want to do what I can to insure that I will be around as she grows up and has kids of her own.
So, here I am...
My goal: Lose 75lbs, getting down to a goal weight of 155lbs.
My timeline: I would like to be at my goal weight by my 28th birthday (May 2004)
My eating plan: Since I am breastfeeding, I don't want to get on any specific diet and I don't want to lose weight too quickly. Therefore, I am resolving to eat healthier foods and cut out (most) junk food.
My exercise plan: I have done little in the way of exercise since moving to CA in Aug. 2002. To start out I will walk at least 4 days a week for 30 minutes to start.
I look forward to getting to know everyone and to gecoming a fellow loser. Now, I'm off to get my member clippie.

I guess I'm a quazzi lurker! ;)
Well the short of my history is that after years of yo-yo and fad diets, and a near death experience due to out of control HBP...I decided I needed to make a 'lifestyle change' for myself.
I went from about 425-450 (don't know for sure as I never found scales that went that high) to a 'comfort range' of 235-265 over a period of about 3 years.
Also in that timeframe...when I first started to exercise 1/4 of a mile's walk at a verrrry slow rate just about killed me. Contrast that to my most recent visit at WDW where in 5 days I logged 62 miles.
On the exercise front, since I'm (frame wise) really big I chose to pursue bodybuilding as an activity that I enjoyed (mostly because I only compete against myself) and when I started my bench was at 80 pounds and I've since worked up to regularly going north of 400. I'm not saying this as a matter of ego, but rather as an illustration of how you can change your body if you are committed to yourself.
On the "dietary" front....I have a personal 'hang up' with the word 'diet'...as to me....and a lot of people (me for sure) seem to subconscienously (sp?) mentallly view a 'diet' as something we do for a short time to make an adjustment to our body....and then feel we can 'go back to eating normally'. Well...for me at least....how I used to define "normal" wasn't healthy for me....so I like to look at the whole package of changing what foods, what volumes of food, excercise as "a lifestyle"...something I can live with in a healthy way everyday for the rest of my life....
Wheather you have 2 pounds or 200 to shed...just remember..you are in control...each day...each meal...your actions with either keep you from your dreams & desires....or they will help you closer to them! :):)

Well, I've been lurking too. And thinking how terrific you all sound and what great goals and stick-to-itiveness you all have. Thought, well....girl, you're going to sound whiney if you join in and only have 20 or so pounds to lose. But, now I see Cindy B and we are in exactly the same boat. I'm 5' 8" and weigh in at about 160. Blood pressure is high and energy level is low. Used to be about 130 and felt terrific. So, you have all given me a boost of 'I can do it'. Thanks. I'm off to find an eating plan I can live with and still lose with!!
