Although we have been to WDW many times in the past--this is our first trip to BWV since buying. ( we are in a 1 bedroom may25-30)
Our past trip have all been in hotel rooms so we ate all meals out. Now that we will have a kitchen I am just trying to plan out the week. What do most of you guys find yourselves doing??
I can see eating maybe breakfast in but we do enjoy eating out on vacation and a character breakfast or two. (DS6 and DS2)
Just wanted to know what is "normal" since i'm a newbie DVC'R

Many DVCers don't use the kitchen. We tend to eat dinner out only once or twice and cook the rest of the meals in our room. Unless we are doing a character meal, we will eat breakfast and most lunches in the villa. While I enjoy going out to eat occasionally, I get burned out really quick if I have to eat out 3 meals a day or even just dinner every night.

"Where is the kitchen"?? We thought they were just ornaments in the 1BR and 2BR's.:p
P.S. My DW refuses to cook on vacation...and I don't blame her.We usually just have breakfast in the rooms, keep drinks, snacks, coffee, etc.Occasionally order pizza.;)

We usually (but not always) have breakfast in the room and we have a few snack handy. We tend to have a nice full service lunch in the parks, and a counter service dinner.
We are visiting our DVC "home" for the first time this summer. However, in the past we stayed at the Disney Institute - partially because of the kitchen. Generally I cook most of the time that we are there. We may eat out once or twice but we find it nice to eat at the villa about mid-day, take a break and then head back to the parks. That way everyone gets a break. Our DD is 8 and it is easier to just eat in because she doesn't like to wast time eating when at the parks. We may do a character meal once and the buffet at Germany in Epcot since it is excellent.
I really don't mind cooking during vacation and its really great for breakfast.

We're there for 14 days in January so we do a mix. We eat out, we heat up leftovers and we pick up a rotisserie chicken from Publix. We stay in a studio so no "full" kitchen. I'm not sure I'd use the stove anyway.

We NEVER cook in the villa....Heck, we don't even cook while at home! That being said, we do use the fridge, coffee maker, and possibly the micro to heat left overs.

We'll be taking our first trip home in November at BCV and I'm planning on putting the kitchen to good use. We have a 3 and 4 year old and they just don't have the patience to eat every single one of their meals in a restaurant.
I know how costly eating out can get and while we'll certainly try some of the nicer restaurants while in WDW, I prefer to be more economical when it comes to eating breakfasts and lunches in our villa. That's one of the reasons we bought into it, knowing that we'd have a full kitchen to do some of our own cooking.

We have some breakfasts in the villa and stock the fridge for late night snacks.:)
We haven't been "home" yet but will stay in a 1BR when we do go. We stayed at Fort Wilderness cabins last year and ate breakfast and a light dinner in the cabin; our main meal was usually a character lunch. My husband does the cooking and likes to cook so I'm lucky! http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung/ernaehrung/food-smiley-002.gif

I cook the vast majority of the meals in the unit. But, I love to cook, so, no a big problem for me. We do a couple of breakfasts out also a couple of dinners and if we happen to be in a park at lunch time, we will eat lunch there.

We have small children who still take naps during the afternoon. We tend to eat breakfast in the room, eat almost all lunches out at a nice restaraunt with PS reservations, and then dinner is sometimes in, sometimes out right after naptime. Don't know if that helps. We do use the kitchen, but many times it's for preparing food we've bought like subs, sandwiches, or something to heat up. That's just us.

Most breakfasts, sometimes afternoon snacks (cheese and crackers, fruits, etc.), plus wine/beer/soda, and every now and then microwave popcorn or ice cream.
I don't cook at home, I'm not going to start on vacation!

We have stayed at OKW only once and are officially going "home" to BWV in Oct. But at OKW we ate breakfast almost everyday in our villa except when we had our Cindy breakfast. Lunch was usually a sit-down in the parks or at a resort. Dinner was often light and off-site. We often had snacks in the room. Since we have a 2yo we had lots of snacks on hand. We never used the stove, but sure made use of the fridge. Its just so nice to have somewhere to store snacks instead of crowding up space in an already crowded hotel room.

There's so much good food at wdw - everything I eat I buy there. Breakfast is eaten in my studio/villa, but for other meals I go to some of my favorite Disney restaurants. If I want to eat at home, I'll do it when I'm not on vacation ;-)
WOW! I really thought everyone did use the kitchen!! No, really , I did!
Anyway, we do-alot. We find it saves us alot of money we rather spend elsewhere. We always have breakfast in the roo-unless it is a character breakfast. We pack snacks and drinks for the parks, but have a big lunch that holds us over , in the parks -maybe a snack for dinner.
On non-park days we will cook 2 or 3 meals and snacks, depending on where we are. We do not however make plans around the meals-if we are out and it is more convenient to eat out, we will. We also like to have nachos and snacks while enjoying the resort.
I have pre-made and frozen some of our meals(when we drive), otherwise fajitas are easy and quick. The cooked rotisserie chickens are also good. Of course the old standby pizza is always a hit.

We always eat breakfast in our room, even if we're in a regular hotel room. I'm just not a big out-to-breakfast person. This time around, we're going to get lunch supplies and have lunch in our room most days of our 7 day trip. We're going to have dinner out every night, which is enough eating out for us. When we were eating lunch and dinner out, I found that I was never hungry for dinner and I'd end up ordering an just an appetizer. We definitely like to eat dinner out and try different restaurants when we're on vacation, but eating out 3 meals a day would get tiresome (and expensive!) for us.

We usually eat a light breakfast in the room. Other than that, we have snacks -- microwave popcorn, chips, fruit, cookies maybe. We use the refrigerator for milk, cokes and bottled water. I have never once turned on the stove. The posts mentioning things like the type of pans I skim over because I couldn't even have told you if there WERE pans in the unit. There are so many wonderful restaurants and foods that we can only experience at WDW, and we often don't return to the room until late at night.
Hm, maybe we can convince DVC to have some units with the small, studio-type "kitchen" setup and use that other space for a larger living area, or perhaps another bed??

Over the course of twelve nights, I will have three or four major breakfasts, real serious stuff, lots of everything, there are 6-12 people in the GV. I make some real cool stuff. I will have one or two dinners, and of course a fridge full of pigs feet for snacks.
Coffee, late night nachos, crab cakes, pizza rolls, heavy Belgum chocolate ice cream with malt to sprinkle on....the thought af that malt and ice cream just gave me the chills, its so good.
We don't use the kitchen alot, but it definitely adds a whole lot of comfort to the vacation...hey, isn't that why I bought DVC???? For comfortable vacations, it works real well.

Last December we planned to have a couple of meals in our villa....we did a seafood boil (forgot our big pot...so we had to split up the cooking....but it worked out in the end) and steak sandwiches. We also ate most of our breakfasts there and had lots of snacks, etc... We tend to be 2 meal a day folks...but we also has some meals out in the parks and restaurants.
I like the idea of making and freezing some things in advance since we generally drive. I generally make and freeze pancakes for us to have over several days at home...and I could do this for vacation. Same thing goes for chili, stew....any number of things. The one thing I don't like about cooking on vacation is that it takes up vacation time...but then again, it saves a lot of money! I've gotta save if I'm going to buy more points! LOL

We eat a lot in our room. We were even doing that before we bought DVC. We really do not enjoy sit down restaurants; the fuss, the waiting, the loss of valuable time. We usually do counter service so we can sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere, usually for lunch. DH is not big on breakfast and I'm happy with a bagel and cream cheese and coffee on the balcony (that by itself is heaven) while DH gets a few extra zzzzzzzz's. Supper is usually a sandwich sometime after 9:30 or 10pm. Yes, we are still commandos. We are taking family this summer and the only way we could afford the whole trip is for mostly meals in the room. Everyone was ok with that.
BTW-I was told BCV has grills by the Dune's Cove area, but can't picture it. Has anyone seen them? Are they convenient? Are picnic tables near them? Thanks!

We use the kitchen for breakfasts every day. Our family is not big breakfast eaters and going out for Breakfast is a waste for us. We have lunch in the villa once in a while. We have yet to actually 'cook' a dinner in the room. On a number of trips we had every intention to but it we were always doing something else... We have ordered Pizza in for dinner a couple of times though. We stock the fridge with soda (and sometimes beer) and get snacks to munch on in the evenings....
My favorite use of the kitchen is to make a nice pot of coffee and have a cup (or 2) out on the balcony in the morning, and just r-e-l-a-x and soak in all the peace and quiet!

Since we purchased in 1992, I can't recall once that we've ever cooked anything in the kitchen. Once in awhile we'll use the microwave to heat something, occasionally have some cereal in the AM, and ALWAYS use the coffee maker!! But other than that, we eat virtually all meals (breakfast and dinner) at WDW restaurants.

We use the kitchen. It is the reason we bought into VWL. After adding in meals All Stars was almost as expensive as a VWL studio room.
We use the kitchen for breakfast, coffee, light suppers and snacks. We have 1 nice breakfast & supper & usually buy lunches.
DH & I really enjoyed having our coffee on the balcony.

At Disney we eat one meal in the parks along with snacks per day. Our other meals are sandwiches, pizza and anything else we purchase that is microwaveable or fast to prepare.
At Vero, breakfast and lunch are sandwiches, cereal, donuts ect.
I cook dinner. This year I might purchase a whole rib eye, slices at Sams club. That should take care of a couple of meals. Maybe make some beef and rice/or noodles the first night, makes great leftovers us. I have never eaten out at Vero but might this year once. Vero is so relaxing I do not like to even go shopping. We may eat out on site.

I hate to cook at home, certainly not about to do it on vacation! We go to Winn Dixie and buy breakfast foods and snacks. Donuts, cereal, milk and lots of fruit, which I try to force my kids to eat to counteract all the vacation junkfood! We make microwave popcorn and get lots of canned and bottled drinks to take swimming -- Cokes are $2.50 if you buy them at the pools! I also buy snacks to take wherever we go "just in case." Little granola and candy bars, peanut butter crackers, sugarless gum. And we buy LOTS of bottled water. Eating breakfasting in and buying our own snacks and drinks saves us a lot of money.

We went for a week in a one bedroom, ordered food from netgrocer and brought a soft cooler of frozen meats and cold cuts on the airplane. Had every lunch and dinner in the room except for one character lunch and two character dinners. It is easy to cook in the room much easier than home. There is plenty of room to cook and the closets are empty (not all that junk stored at home) Just plan really carefully, bring your own spices in baggies, and just buy milk and bread at the general store on sight, You can order all non perishables from netgrocer, disney delivers it to your room for free (once in a while they put a charge on it but ask at the front desk and they will take it off). There is service for 8 so we would eat lunch and dinner, load up the dishwasher and run it over night. We ususally go to the parks right when they open, which means we would leave around noon, lunch at the BWV, pool time for the kids, and we just hang out in the afternoon, dinner in the villa, and back to that park or another park until closing, fireworks, illuminations, or fantasmic. This works out great and we saved so much money, and we are not cheap at all, but those meals in the parks are out of control. We do eat the character meals, for instance, the day you go to magic kingdom we would stay all day, time the dinner at liberty tree tavern so we are done right in time for the night parade, right outside the door. It gives us a chance to relax in the middle of that park day. Look up any questions you have on this site, do a search and you will get answers to everything!

We cook most of the meals in the unit. We drive so i take along the crockpot, so cooking is a lot easier.
We spent almost $100 on night going to Bomas and thats with the CM discount. We went to Publix the next day and spent $100 for the week on groceries.
We bought into the DVC back in 94 because cooking in the room was a great way to save and allow us to travel to Disney more often,

Part of DH agreeing to buy into DVC was the promise that we would save money. I do my part by cooking. We eat all breakfasts in the villas. I really don't "cook" but there are many lunches and dinners that are merely sandwiches or fried chicken from Publix. We do go out for a few meals, mostly sushi/fish to keep DH happy. I really don't mind because the "cooking" because it's at WDW!!!!;)

We eat every breakfast except for one in the room. We only make 2 PS per trip for either lunch or dinner and try to eat the remainder of our meals back at the room. However, this doesn't always work because get too wrapped up in the parks and don't want to bother going back to the room to eat.
I really wouldn't call the meals that we do eat in the room cooking. More like reheating. I usually cook red beans and rice, spaghetti and meatballs and a roast a couple of weeks before we leave and freeze them.

Breakfast is eaten at the villa, usually. Well the kids and DH eat, I don't usually eat breakfast. Lunch and dinner are almost always out. I think on our 6 trips we have eaten dinner in 3 times, and all 3 times were take out.
I use the stove alot--to make tea. ;)
We have ALOT of snacks, and make good use of the refrigerator, but that's about it.
It sounds like we are in the majority. We usually buy things for quick breakfasts and snacks and some soda, water, and beer. But most lunches and all dinners are eaten out. There are so many restaurants to choose from at WDW that I find that eating out is part of our vacation experience. We have ordered pizza or picked up hamburgers and such and had them in the room when we are too tired to venture out. I think that the only time that we have ever turned on the stove was to make a late night frozen pizza.

We have two youngish children (they were 5 and 2 our last trip) so that might be a big factor in how with deal with meals. We _DON'T_ go out to breakfast that is just a hellish experance except for the Princess Breakfast we make an exception. For the most part we don't go out to dinner and have it in the room because it is easier on the girls whose bedtime is normally 7pm but at WDW might be 8pm. My DH loves cooking, but since I am a SAH mom and he doesn't get home until late most nights I do the cooking so when we are on vacation at VWL he does all the cooking and loves it and I get a vacation. And we always have a PS somewhere for lunch.
DH and I are going out to dinner by ourselves for the first time at WDW. Our youngest turns 4 while we are down so a couple days after her B-day we are going to leave the girls with the Cub's Den and go to the CA Grill. :bounce: Can you tell I am excited just under 11 months away and I am already excited about it. :bounce:
TandyR-That sounds great!! Your husband can cook for us anytime! Although cooking at my DVC Home is alot more enjoyable than at my other home.
Richyams-Is it true that pig's feet goes well w/ a bottle of ink?(I heard thta from MaryJane when I called her at her
new #, CUC-UMBER.
MsDis-There are bar-b-q grills at BCV on the path that leads from the hot tub towards the front entrance of the main part of the resort. The path has a Boardwalk effect to it. There are benches, but I do not recall picnic tables convenient to them. There are tables around the pool nearby.

In 5 years, I don't think I have ever turned on the stove. We like to eat out at WDW and planning which restaurant we are going to on which day is part of the fun. We use the kitchen for coffee in the morning (Of Course), snacks, and to keep drinks cold in the frig.

Pasta with Prego rivals the quality of Tony's Town Square...we just put a stuffed "Lady and Tramp" on the table and I sing "This is the Night" for needed atmosphere. ;) Also, it takes less time to prepare than waiting for your PS at the restaurant.
We pick easy prepare foods, shake and bake chops, prepared salad. Sams Club has some higher-end prepared foods that are different than we eat at home, but much less expensive than eating out all the time. In a week we eat out 3-4 meals.
Before buying DVC we decided that we could buy many more points if we cut other vacation costs. Meals out fall into that catagory. Besides, eating with three kids in a restaurant is like opening your wallet while riding Thunder Mountain Railroad.;)
Great analagy Johnnie!
One of the reasons we bought points was because we could save money by having a full kitchen and being able to enjoy relaxing meals in our vacation home. There are alot of very convenient food choices that are good, but without the fuss. Would I sometimes rather eat out-yes, and we do but not all the time--That is what the Disney Cruise is for!!

We always have breakfast in the room, and it's a big enough breakfast (omelets, sausages, bacon, bagels, fruit) that we're not too interested in lunch until 1 or 2 PM.
In a week's time we probably plan 2 sit down dinners out, which means there are probably 2 meals of leftovers to have in the room because of those huge portions at WDW retaurants. At least one other dinner in is pizza and big salads.
We make a grocery stop and get plenty of fruit, deli meats and cheeses, rolls, ice cream, chips, LOTS of fruit, bottled water and soda. I make deli-style sandwiches and wrap them tight and keep them in the fridge. Those sandwiches are sometimes supper, usually lunch if anyone is hungry, and are easy to replenish if the supply gets low. We travel (usually) with teenagers and it's best to have plenty of portable food (the fruit and sandwiches) for them to grab so they don't get into too much junk food in the parks. We have the sit down meals and usually pizza night scheduled. The rest of the time everyone pretty much makes their own schedule, so having the healthy food ready works great for us.
DH and I keep wine, cheese, French bread and fruit handy for late -night balcony sitting.

Hey now wait a minute, the stove actually works!!!!!:p :p :p :p :p :p I should call my guide and complain, I never was told there was a working stove!!! Anyway, we only eat a few breakfasts in and that's about it. I'm on vacation, and I'm DEFINATELY not cooking. I love to cook, but not on vacation. I'm a stickler for my own pots and pans, I'll only cook with one brand, and I'm not dragging my whole set down. We're used to eating out, we go out at least once a week at home, so on vacation we go out every night. It's part of our whole experience. We stock the fridge with drinks and buy some snacks for late night. That's it. Once we ate lunch in the villa and it was nice, maybe I'll try it again!

We have gone to Giordannos (sp?) a couple times. It is north of DTD on Apopka-Vineland road, which is the road where the entrance to DTD is.. There is a Tony Roma's and a Steak and Shake next door to it too.

Giordanos also delivers.
Usually, there are just the two of us. Our children are grown and have sometimes accompanied us, but they usually keep to their own schedule. We do breakfast in the room, unless we happen to do a character breakfast. Lunch is leftovers back at the BWV or counter service at one of the parks. We are sometimes visiting different parks, so we treat this as an on-your-own meal (one of the advantages of having adult children). We will make PS for dinner approximately half the time. It's too expensive to eat big dinners every night, but we do enjoy the WDW dining experience. It's an important part of our vacations. Leftovers from these dinners will frequently be lunch on a subsequent day. On days when we do not eat dinner out, we'll have something simple in the room: leftovers, sandwiches we make ourselves, pizza. We almost always order pizza once each trip.

As others have posted, if we drive I bring frozen meals that I've prepared at home - chili, stew, spaghetti, etc. Last Oct when we were at BCV - 1bdrm for 8 nights, we "cooked" - thawed the frozen things we had brought with us, most nights. We had other items we had picked up at the store once we arrived at WDW. This trip we are flying, and staying in a studio, and I'm not bringing much in the way of food. We'll stop at a store on the way in and have breakfast and snacks and maybe some sandwich fixins in the room. I do get tired of park food, but there are several restaurants that we haven't tried yet, so I guess I'll be forced to eat at them.

We have mainly stayed in studios, so we have only heated up leftovers or made sandwiches. We always eat breakfast in the room....cereal and milk. This year will be our first venture into staying at a two-bedroom. I don't really think that I will "cook", but my husband that is a breakfast fanatic will probably cook up eggs for breakfast everyday. Other than that, I think we will still eat dinners out at a sit down restaurant...and lunches, well, it just depends on the day.

I've only stayed once as a DVC member and that was for 11 days in an OKW 1 bdrm. I made a "2 out of 3" rule for myself and daughter: two out of three meals a day we ate at "home". This summer we're staying in a studio and I'll go back to what we used to do in a regular hotel room (only so much easier with a refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot): breakfast in (except 1 character meal), the rest of the meals out. This trip I will also be attending a convention and several meals are included in the registration. So my daughter and her 17 year old cousin who is looking after her will be eating on their own in the parks if I'm having a meal at the convention.
MSDIS-
You will need to pack up a little cooler or something to carry the food in to get to the grills. Also, a little table would help-I think there is a small one on the terrace/patio of each room. We did not use the grills, but it is nice to have. Also, don't forget the aluminum foil to cover the grill grating.
You may run the risk of other people at the pool offering to buy a burger, since there is not a snack bar here.
Enjoy!

We do use the Kitchen, Never to really cook, though. I have a very fussy eater, so If he has eaten nothing but french frys all day....we at night make him a frozen pizza or somthing similar. we keep lots of snacks and do eat our breakfast in the villa. I also have 2 year old twins, who do not eat very well in the parks it is usually to hot for them and to much to see for them to slow down and eat, So we do almost every night offer the little guys somthing we are sure they will eat, Like Mac and cheese, steamed veggies, and fresh fruit, just so I feel they have eaten a little somthing.

Thanks to everyone for all your ideas!! I see everyone really does use their villas differently!!
I think I will fall into the category of eating most meals out but using fridge for milk, drinks, snacks etc.
We will be there for only 5 days and do enjoy the WDW food!!
I have the grocery list of the BWV delivery--Would really like to avoid stopping on the way. Can anyone tell me what is available at screen door general store. Any frozen stuff. (veggies?)
thanks

We do easy breakfasts(muffins, cereal, bacon and egg sandwiches) and snacks. No big meals. When I am on vacation, I like to eat out.

Great sales idea. I had actually teased Sis about selling hot freshly baked muffins on the boardwalk every am since that is what we have planned for breakfast daily. Hamburgers and hot dogs would be a great investment. HMMMMM.......a couple weeks of that and maybe we could afford to add on. LOL!
 Thanks again for your help.
