Although I tan reasonably well, as I get older, I am more concerned about skin cancer and would like to try using a sunless tanner this cruise. Not real dark, just light tan. Can anyone recommend a good one that you've tried before..and one that looks more natural not orange in color...

thanks in advance

Good question!!! I have been thinking along those same lines. I read something online that compared a whole bunch of brands but I cannot remember the site it was on. Any other Disers have some opinions, suggestions???

I have used Neutrogena sunless tanning spray (light/medium) for YEARS. I highly recommend it. It leaves a VERY natural color (I am very fair and anything dark would look fake). The key is to EXFOLIATE the skin you want to spray before doing so, to avoid streaks. The Neutrogena dries in 5 minutes. :)

Oh, I hadn't thought about this in years....but I must share it (I must! I must! I must!)

When my DD Kayla was about 5, she asked me why I wasn't as dark as she was. She was biracial (adopted by us when she was 5 weeks old). I did my best to explain genetics to her and she said, "Well, why don't you try some of that lotion that will make you dark?"

Reasonable request since I am as pale as they come - so I did.
When she saw the results, she said, "Mommy, I'm sorry I asked you to do it. You look like the Great Pumpkin now."

YUP, I turned ORANGE.

I agree with Michelle that Neutragena has a great product just be sure to wash your hands right afterward and also mix a little tanning lotion with regular lotion for your toes and ankle areas. Last year I could not find Neutragena in stock where I live so I tried Banana Boat and I love it more! It costs half as much and works great. It comes in a tube and is available in dark and light/medium. I use dark and it looks very, very natural. My DH calls it my "tan in a can".

I was diagnosed with melanoma when my eldest son was 5 weeks old which will be 5 years ago next week. Luckily I caught it very early but boy it woke me up to the dangers of cancer and how deadly melanoma is. People hear melanoma or sun cancer and think no risk or no big deal. It is the fastest growing cancer in the world. I was in Florida last week and I saw at least 100 people in Sarasota and Tampa I wanted to warn about the dangers of burning and tanning.

Anyway try both and see which works with your skin type :)

I was thinking about this very same thing this morning.

I don't know what kind I used( when I was pregnant) but I did turn orange!!!

Where have you found these sunless tanning lotions? Target?

Thanks so much !

I used to love the Clarins tanning lotions, but they are too pricey for my budget now. I have used the Neutrogena foam with great results.

I have used Clinique's lotion for several years. I am a pale blond who does not tan very well. I have had nothing but good outcomes with their lotion. I buy the medium body and face lotion, it also comes in spray. I like it because it doesn't have the oder that most others have and you get the tan color not the great pumpkin! Most major department stores carry Clinique. Yes, you should shower/exfoliate before applying lotion. It works wonders!!

Wow! More replies than I expected...thanks for all your responses.

It's nice to first see what everyone recommends because you could spend a fortune trying various brands...they're all so expensive to begin with. I've heard of all those brands so will check it out and try one or two here at home first. I just hope I apply it well so it goes on even...any tips on the technique? Also how often do you reapply?

I have used self tan spf 15 from Bath and Body Works for the last few years and it works really well. I like it because it gives you a really soft tan that looks really natural.

Here in the Seattle area we have one of those neat spray tan booths. It's amazing! My husband had a run in with Melanoma this past fall and I'm a pale redhead so we tried the booth. We exfoliated at home before we went. It only takes 30 seconds, 15 minutes on the front, turn yourself around and 15 minutes on the back. You put lotion on your feet and hands before you get in, put a shower cap over your hair and you're ready. When you come out you towel off, put on your clothes, wash your hands and go home. Within 4 hours I had the most natural looking tan! No orange!!! It was kind of spendy, about $20 for a visit, but it lasted for weeks!

I have never heard of spray tan booths! I burn very easily and am white as a fish belly. I wonder if there are any of these spary tan booths around here (Gulfport, Mississippi)? I'll have to check it out. It would be well worth $20 bucks

I have used Bain de Soleil with Streakguard in the past with good results. One thing that I recommend is when you are applying it wear medical latex gloves or the palms of your hands will be orange, VERY ORANGE!! No problem with orange on my body though. Natural looking. Be very careful with applying around your ankles, if you don't you could get streaks. Also, like mentioned above, I mix the tanner with equal parts lotion.

My sister has been using Clinique for her body and Estee Lauder for her face and looks gorgeous--I thought she'd just been at the beach or the pool. When she told me just yesterday what she'd been using-- I gave her money to go get it for me from the mall (I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant and don't feel like seeing anyone!!). Anyway--I timed it perfect because it was "gift" time at Clinique so I got a bunch of free products w/ my purchase. If you're on a budget and don't usually want to spend the kind of money like you do on Clinique and Estee--then always try and time your purchases during their "gift" times. They both do them and every department store that carries them rotates "gift" time so you can actually almost always buy the product you want at whichever store is currently doin gift time. Like I said--my sister looks gorgeous--and she bought me 2 bottles --$15 each but I got about 7 or 8 other products w/ it.:Pinkbounc :smooth:

The spray on booth tan available in our area is called Mystic Tan. Info about how it works can be found here http://www.mystictan.com . One of the tanning salons in our area carries it along with the regular tanning bed stuff. I'm red headed and fair skinned and it works great. It's so hard to get bottled sunless tanners distributed evenly and if you're wearing something sleeveless, that can be important.

The only problem I have with any sunless tanners is that after swimming, it seems to get bleached out. My tan looked great until a day at BB last year. My tan wasn't totally gone, but I definately lost a good bit of it. That's when it's good to bring your bottled tanner and reinforce what you have left.

Actually I do think they have a shelf life. At least the AVON one does...it says once bottle is opened, use w/in 6 months. Wonder if the others are the same? They probably just may not work as well anymore...or maybe not at all depending on how old.

I also thought of the Mystic Tan ...we have a few here in Calif. Costs about 25.00 and they say only lasts about a week or so. I will do some testing/experiementing before our cruise in July. I don't like lying out anymore anyway, so the instant tan will give me more time to do other things! Healthier too!

BTW, I think Clinique & Neutrogena are winning so far...those 2 brand keeps being repeated on this thread.

Like I said previously I used Neutrgena for the last 4 years then out of necessity had to use Banana Boat since I could not find the other and have ended up loving it! It costs about $7.00 for a huge tube and goes on tinted so you can see where you have streaks. I apply 3 times a week and have never had a problem with color, streaking or color on my hands, which I did have with Neutragena. I have become confidant enough with B. Boat that I will even apply the day I need it bc I don't have to worry about touch up's!

As a FYI be careful with your feet, toes and ankles. As I stated yesterday mix with some plain lotion, i.e. Curel around those areas and also wheer your hands meet your wrist. Sometimes I hurry to wash my hands but wash to far up and my wrist look white bc I wash it right off.

Happy SAFE tanning :Pinkbounc

I have had great luck with Banana Boat sunless tanning. I am fair but use the dark since it does a better job than the medium. It works GREAT, especially since I have trouble tanning. It is very inexpensive and can be found anywhere (target, walgreens, k-mart). I use the lotion and don't bother exfoliating. It looks really natural. In fact, I just started to prepare for summer.

You need to remember to wash your hands right away or you will have the tannest palms around!!

Kimnicki

I too am a lover of the Nutragena product! I started off using the lotion and eventually switched to the spray. It's wonderful. It sprays on a fine mist so that you don't overdo it and it dries a little faster than the lotion. I use a rubber glove ( usually one I've saved from a hair dye kit!) and then switch hands when I'm ready to do the other arm. They also make Instant Bronze for your face that's a tinted sunless tanner. Makes it a whole lot easier to see where your applying it to your face. And it's made specifically for your face so you'll have less of a chance of breaking out!

I totally agree with the exfoliating before hand. Especially on the knees and ankles where the skin is thicker....lotion tends to color darker on those areas so take it easy on them to start!

Good luck!

I am very surprised that one comment has not surfaced in this thread.

NONE of these instant tans will protect your skin unless they specifically say they have a good strong suncreen in them. They are only good for fending off the 'where's your tan' questions upon your return, which I honestly then say I don't want skin cancer, I wear good sunscreen.

You will still need to use a nice, high SPF sunscreen, especially on Castaway Cay for good protection for your skin.

I use spf 45, btw, any less and I get color. The sun is a lot stronger in the carribean.

buzz&woody'smom
04-01-2003, 07:38 PM
MarkRG is right. I should have known to add that information since I have melanoma. For the first 4 years after my diagnosis I was scared and mad and hid from the sun but with 2 DS's under 5 I could not hide forever.

Most Dermatologists will tell you that once you reach a SPF of 30 that is fine, the higher the number is not necessarily better. What does matter is the brand and ingredients in the sun screen you buy and wear and that it is appropriate for your activity (i.e. water proof etc.) and the most important thing to remember is to reapply no less than every 2 hours and more so if in the water. The sunscreen that has been recommended to me the most are L'oreal Ombrelle and Neutragena. Both contain Parasol 1789 and make sure they have UVB and UVA block.

Last summer my DH and I spent a week in Playa and spent a day snokeling in Cozumel. I did not realize when I was snorkeling by swim suit in the bottom area raised up on my "bootie" therefore leaving areas that were not protected by my sunscreen. Lesson learned apply before dressing and reapply liberally and frequently ;)

04-01-2003, 09:34 PM
Yes, I know to wear a sunscreen in addition to using the sunless tanning application. I already have a sunscreen but I was specifically asking about the self tanning products. I think most sunless tanners specifically say that their product is NOT a sunscreen and to use other sun protection.

MarkRG

Just wanted to make sure you knew, as your first line specifically says that as you get older you're getting concerned about skin cancer. Ok, back to the cosmetics discussion now :)

I appreciate your bringing it up Mark....in case anyone forgot its importance. I guess what I meant about my skin cancer concern was that I don't intend to sun bathe anymore and therefore choose to use a sunless tanner instead. So I can still have the tan and NOT have to lie out in the sun to get it.

thanks for your input...very important point.

Same here. Labor Day weekend I was in the Bahamas, and I went away for a day to a little private island where you spend the day on a quiet beach. My boyfriend wanted to put his sunscreen in my bag, because of course he wasn't carrying a bag. His was only SPF 15 or 25, and he didn't want to use my SPF 45. I didn't want to carry both bottles, because the straps on my bag were really narrow and would cut into my skin if the bag were too heavy.

Anyway, after a mild argument, I gave in and carried his sunscreen instead of mine. By the end of the day I had a bad sunburn, despite reapplying constantly. He felt really guilty, and I don't think he'll ever try to talk me out of "unnecessary" SPF 45 again.

I want to stress it is the brand and ingredients in the sunscreen not just the SPF even though it is importan. After having melanoma for 5 years and seeing at least 10-15 Dermatologist in 4 states I have told over and over ingredients and brand is so important. My life depends on no sun exposure since I already have 1 melanoma I have a 50% chance of developing another I am in my early 30's.

I did the Mystic Tan before our cruise last May. My girlfriend and I decided to try it one day. Afterward, my girlfriend was noticeably "tanner" and I was slightly "tanned" but I do have very pale skin. I decided to purchase a 7-series package and was pleasantly surprised by the results. However, about 1/2 through our cruise, I did notice my "tan" was streaking especially on the backs of my legs -- almost like I had been exfoliating, but I hadn't. As far as bottled "tan in a can" I hear that Neutrogena and Coppertone "Endless Summer" are very good. HTH

My husband had his bout with Melanoma just this last fall and we've certainly learned a lot about sunscreen. I'm a redhead so I've always been very careful about sunburns but my husband spent many years skiing and fishing with protection. Anyway, his dermatologist gave us two recommendations. One: stay away from Coppertone products. They offer the LEAST protection for the most $$. Two: Rite Aid drugstore has a fabulous line of sunscreens, very inexpensive and protect very well. And remember - hats, hats, hats!

One more thing to note: Clarins has a self tanning lotion that is also a sunscreen. It comes in different strengths, all the way up to 30 I think. It doesn't look orange and the sunscreen works very well. It is expensive however, but probably no more than the others.

I too am interested to hear which ingredients/products may be the best. And I totally agree with Cindy - I have NEVER liked any coppertone product!!! Many of them even smell bad to me.... yuck.

Has anyone had any experience with products making them break out, like in an allergic reaction? My son and I both tend to have problems with sensitivity. We like some Banana Boat products, but then DS started to say it was stinging his skin, and it caused his back and shoulders (where I had applied heavily) to break out in tiny bumps.

We do have a Panama Jack sunscreen that we really love. This stuff is not greasy. Not sticky. Not heavily scented. Which makes it good for DH to use when his job keeps him outdoors a lot! It is great! Just wish our Walmart carried it. Now I have to find some more!

For sensitive skin which I have too I use Neutrogena's Healthy Defense which is SPF 45, UVA/UVB with Parosol 1789 and water proof. Available about anywhere. It comes in a white bottle with light blue lid.

I just checked my bottle and I bought Coppertone 45 with Parasol 1789, contains UVA,UVB protection. On the ingredients Parasol was the first one.

Do you think it is ok for my kids?

I personally prefer to use Neutrogena because they are fragrance free and I don't spell like suntan lotion all day when enjoying indoor activities.

Thanks for the help.

I know what you mean Renee! I am amazed at how active this thread became. I just wanted some good brands of sunless tanners and got 3 pages worth of information! This is great...thanks everyone for contributing and giving me good info. I am going to try the clinique brand first (no odor) and go from there if I don't like it. So many choices and now I also got good info about the sunscreens. I didn't know about the coppertone before. There are so many brands to choose from in the stores these days that it gets so confusing. Usually it is true you get what you pay for...but now always. It depends on what it is.

*Just tried Neutrogena sunscreen with Parasol 1789 on my DS9 and it did a great job.

Yeah! Another fan of The Body Shop! Great products!

Sorry I'm getting to this conversation so late, but my 2cents:

I have used countless self-tanners because I am freckled and SO PALE! (DH says I glow in the dark) I always exfoliate and swear by Clinique or The Body Shop self-tanners. Spray for the body and cream for the face.

Thanks! I have a combination of self-tanner on and too much sun in St. Thomas (Champagne Catamaran -- I fell asleep on the 45 minute ride back without reapplying SPF but my legs got the worse of it).
Regarding the streaking, I think I've just done it so much that I've actually become quite good at applying without streaking. When you exfoliate beforehand, that minimizes the chances of streaking by a lot. I also find that the sprays are a lot more effective in preventing streaking.

I'll have to try a spray then....so far only used cremes/gels. The get expensive so I'll try next time. Have you ever tried the mystique sprays at the salons? It costs 25.00 an application which usually lasts for about a week. It's affordable for a once in a while tan I guess. But more expensive than the bottles.

I liked using "Toma's Tan perfect" on my last cruise. You can buy it online, HSN, sometimes walgreens, etc. However, the lotion formula CAN get old and change color. The newest formula is a mousse formula. So, it goes on smoother and stays fresh in the can! You do need to exfoliate and use applicator gloves. But, it has some coloring in it so you can see where it goes on and how thick. I thought this was the most economical and natural tan I have used. Even if I was pale one day and tan the next my closest freinds would ask how I tanned so quick when I was so fair!!! NO ORANGE SKIN.

The tanning booths with the spray on tanner in our area are from a company called MYSTIC TAN. You can find them online and look for locations in your area. It seems like they are only available in more populated areas. I really want to do this for my next cruise!

I know this is a dumb question but for those of you who use spray-on tanners, do you spray them on and let it dry or do you have to rub it in first? My main reason for this question is I thought this would be the best way to "tan" those hard to reach places such as one's own back.

By the way, I did the Mystic tan before my last cruise and it worked great but they warned me not to go in chlorinated water or it would come off.

Thanks!

Just wanted to mention something about the ingredients in sunblocks. I live in Florida and am always concerned about my kids and my very fair DH. There is a product called Bull Frog sold here and I have been told to use the one that specifically includes the ingredient titanium dioxide. It is clearly labeled on the front of the bottle and it is a physical sort of block. Banana boat also makes one in their kids line which is just as good and is a little less expensive than Bull Frog. The Florida company NO-AD (as in NO ADvertising and they donate to NO ADdiction programs) also makes one with titanium dioxide for even cheaper and it works well also. When you are going to the caribbean where the sun is much more intense than where you currently live it is worth it to use a good sunscreen especially on your kids. Even if you don't reapply as often as you should on the kids (we all lose track of time on the beach!) it will keep them (and you) from burning so badly.

If you can't find these at home any kmart, walmart or drug store around the port should sell them.

Does it...

streak in salt water or just chlorinated water?

have a lingering smell like the bottled tanners?

come off on your clothes?

cause skin irritation?

My DD tried a spray tan ( not Mystic) and I didn't notice any difference. She said they selected a 'tanning level' for her -number 4 - because it was her first time. I was not with her at the time, so I was wondering do you select how tan you'd like to be?

As I stated in a response last year. I have melanoma which is the most dealdy and fastest growing cancer in the US among women of my age even over breast or lung cancers and have to be careful with the sun.

I have used Banana Boat sunless tanning for the last couple of years and it is cheap and great.......it has been fine for the 3 cruises I went on last year. I did take it along on both of the 7 day cruises and reapplied it............it is a great value but it is a good idea to apply at night and wear old PJ's bc it will leave a stain on clothes.

I use the medium to dark and it looks like a real tan. I considered going to one of the spray on places but then it is just too easy to do it myself at home :sunny:

I've used a TON of products to look tan because I have a history of skin cancer in my family and I HATE to bake in the sun! I've done the "rae" orange tan more times than I care to admit, had the orange palms, streaks, orange nail beds, darker ankles and for a really long time I swore off self tanning lotions. I started to do the Mist On Tan stuff and it was nice and convenient and after 2-3 times in the mist in a week I looked really nice and brown! My sister in law talked me into trying something else called St. Tropez Auto Bronzant Lotion. It is kind of pricey at 22.60 for a 4oz bottle but the cool thing about it is that if it isnt dark enough for your skin tone you can custom blend it with bronzer to make it your perfect tan. It's aloe vera based and dry's quickly without the orange glow to it. They also sell a mousse, a Mist Spray, body polisher, moisturizer, spf protection, powder bronzer, a travel set and the best thing they have come up with is a self tan remover for when you get it somewhere where you shouldnt have put it like your palms or too far down onto your nailbeds. Also if you use any kind of self tanner and you shave after you put it on it will cause some streaking on your legs unless you reapply the bronzer.

I've used Neutrogena and Kiss my Face, but I don't like the smell after a few hours. I've read here that Clinique doesn't leave the smell. Any others?

As far as sunscreen goes, we swear by Bull Frog. A friend of ours, who is a doctor, introduced us to it in Florida a few years ago. I had been using Banana Boat for babies, but my baby was still getting pink in no time at all. We now use Bull Frog faithfully, and neither of my children have ever been burned. I love the spray for the kids.

Au Courant does not have the tell-tale smell. It's expensive though. It does have an instant bronzer as well as sunless tanner all rolled up into a mousse, so you will have color right away. I use it on my legs only.

For the rest of my body, I use Murad Sunless Tanner. I love that one -- also expensive, but doesn't streak like some of the cheap ones. I am a big fan of Clarins too.

When I tried Nuetrogena, I thought it looked too orange and streaky. Probably because I am pale.

I will have to try Clinique since I use all their other products.

Great thread!

Beware of the Mystic Tan .. it is a different chemical than the regular bottled stuff which they spray on. I had a severe allergic reaction and now I have extreme sensitivity to certain soaps, lotions, detergents, and shampoo. I have an eczema type reaction on my neck and face . Even still and I did it almost a year ago. I also just read an article saying that the chemical they use is harmful if inhaled .... and if you have ever tried it you would know that you have no choice but to inhale it ... its like being in the paint spray booth at Midas without a mask!!!!!

On the other hand I love sunless lotion.... Ban De Soliel is my favorite

As being the original poster of this thread, it's nice to see the topic is still floating around...

Anyway, since posting last year, I have had a chance to try a few sunless tanners. Avon, Neutrogena and Clairins are good. I like Clairins the best, no bad smell and you don't have to wait for it to dry before getting dressed. It looked the most natural. I thought Neutrogena DID have an after scent. I will buy Clairins again....Macy's sells it.
