View Full Version : Can't become DVC w/o at least 150 points?

That's odd, I thought I had read on another post that someone started off with like 60 points in becoming a DVC member.

But, I just received an e-mail from the Reid Resort Family stating that per Disney policy, I would have to 'buy in' at a minimum of 150 points.

Did I just read it incorrectly before that the person had bought into DVC at 60 points? Or, can you 'join' at a level below 150 points?

The minimum to join is 150 points.

What I have read in the past is that you can not buy from DVC less than 150 points. I had also read in the past that the small points contracts on resale are supposed to be add on, but that no one really checked to see if the buyers were new owners or prior owners. From the post I have read, at least a few people have bought small points contracts at resale with no problem.

I am one of the people on the board with less than 150 points. When I talked to Reid, I received the same answer you did. However, when I talked to Jaki, she said it would be no problem. I also knew this from these boards.

Yes, these contracts were originally sold was add-ons. But, once they are sold, if the original buyer whats to sell, the only thing Disney can do is buy back the contract under their ROFR. With the increase in buy backs they may be starting to target first time buyers of less than 150 points. If I were you I would contact the other brokers and see what they say and get on their call sheets.

On a side note, in all the calls I have had with MS no one has ever even mentioned that it was funny to have so few points. They must see these type of contacts at least occasionally. MS treated me with the same professionalism I hear from everyone else.

Hope everything works for you

Jeremy

I guess that I should have said the minimum to join through DVC is 150 points. I did not realize that you could join through smaller contract resales. When DVC began the minimum to join DVC at OKW was 230 points. We joined when they lowered it to 150 points (and then added on later :) ).

Allowing smaller block fresales to join as members helps keep overall values up. Otherwise, those with small add-on blocks would have a much smaller pool of people to sell to (existing members) which would devalue them greatly. I'm sure Disney is aware of this and understands why its in their best interest to allow it.

My wife and I travel in the off season, only need studios, and have no problems staying just on weeknights, so we would have little or no use for more than about 100 points a year, anyway. Heck, I'd make do with 50. But if I had to buy 150, the savings start to make less sense.

Actually, from what I see, the smaller blocks bring a little more per point on resale than do the big blocks.

Let's see if I can summarize for you:

Disney will not sell you less than 150 points for your initial purchase.

You can buy less than the 150 point minimum via the resale route, but only if Disney chooses not to exercise its ROFR.

Perhaps Reid has never had a small contract get by Disney or perhaps they just don't want to bother with the smaller contracts.

I sent you one too Joc! Check it out!

To everyone else, like someone just mentioned maybe they haven't had any luck with those and don't want to waste time with them.

I'm already working on a few things though, we'll see what happens.

I got a 50 point contract (my first and only, for now...) from The Timeshare Store in December with no problem. Unless ROFR has keyed in on that issue there shouldn't be any difficulty.

You can buy into dvc with less than 150 points by going resale. Our first resale was 2 small contracts 50 pts and 65 pts for a total of 115. I got a member card and was able to bank my remaining whole 2 2002 pts, lol. Our next resale was for 100 pts so we now have 215 pts. Buying a resale they have contractw with many different number of points but all will make you a dvc member.

From what I've been able to gather MS doesn't know (or have an easy way to find out) who bought resale or not nor do they seem to care.
