I decided to try sushi at a very good sushi restaurant, or so I'm told, I didn't like it. I had the California roll, wasn't wanting anything with raw fish. Are you supposed to stuff the whole piece in your mouth? I don't know proper sushi etiquette, can't even use chopsticks. If you're not supposed to eat the whole piece then why are they so hard to cut? My mouth is just not big enough to shove that whole piece into (unbelievable huh?), I feel rude trying to. It didn't tast all that good either and I love Oriental foods. What's your advice?

I've never eaten Sushi anywhere else other than at home, but I do know that you try & bite into it in mouthfulls. Chopsticks.......now way, they are too awkward. I just use my fingers, after all they were made first:)
California Roll is nice, as is Seafood Roll & yesterday I had a Honey Chicken one for the first time & it was qutie nice too.;)

I like the Philadelphia roll. There are also some out there with fried shrimp that are pretty good.

They've always cut the rolls before they give them to me. I would have asked them to slice the roll.

100%Disney, I tried my first sushi at Kimono's in the Swan at WDW. It was okay. I can't say I loved it and I can't say I hated it. I love that wasabi stuff though.
It's fun to sit at the sushi bar at Kimono's and watch people up on the karaoke stage, though ;)
Reminds me of the Food & Wine Fest at Epcot!:) A couple years ago my DD decided to try Escargot so she got a plate outside Chef De France while I got some wine. She put one piece in her mouth and chewed...and chewed and chewed until finally she got a terrified look on her face and spit it out! LOL! Said it was so loaded up with garlic that that's all she could taste at first. At least she tried though! You gotta hand it to her - she's got guts!!!

I just started eating sushi about a month ago and I am hooked. Nothing with raw fish, just the california rolls, vegetable rolls and shrimp tempura rolls. with extra wasabi. yum. I am also chop stick impaired, so I just use my hands!

They love california rolls, spring rolls, and the salmon rolls.
Okay guys, stop it...you're making us hungry! We lived in Japan for three years and we really miss going to the local sushi-go-rounds! http://www.wdwinfo.com/sites/family/facelick.gif

After living in Japan as a kid I eat pretty much any type of sushi. I'm not chopstick impaired but do eat sushi with my hands. My younger daughter went to visit her sister in Japan for spring break and adored the sushi-go-round restaurants

We are pretty big sushi fans here. Recently I got to go to Japan (for work) and had sushi there...WOW no comparison it was unbelievable. Few important things when trying it for the first time, (sounds like you followed the general rule of thumb anyway) start out with the rolls (particularly the California rolls), and then gradually make your way to the other stuff. I still have an issue with certain kinds of fish as sushi (not a huge fan of most of the white flesh fish) Yellow tail is pretty much the only white flesh fish I'll eat raw (or "fresh" as they refer to it in Japan).
While I was in Japan though I did start to get adventurous and ate "fresh" squid (little baby ones - whole) 5 years ago you couldn't have paid me to eat them. ALso tried sashimi, but for some reason it didn't take, I need the rice to break it up a little I think.
Not everyone likes sushi, but it was great of you to give it a try..who knows maybe someday you'll give it whirl again and you'll start to like it.

Had my first sushi at Wolfgang Puck's at Downtown Disney - didn't love it, didn't hate it. Had some more at California Grill on the same trip, that was better. Now I love it and I always order it when I go to Japanese places, or I sometimes pick some up for lunch between classes. I'm a vegetarian, so I usually get a cucumber and avocado roll.

Isn't the wasabi the really hot green stuff? I think that I may go back with a friend of mine, she loves sushi, so she can eat what I don't like. I do have to say, it looks real pretty, even if it doesn't taste that way.

I had some really yummy spicy tuna roll the other day... My sushi experience is limited, but I can't wait to get some more of this!

I'm crazy about sushi and sashimi!
I use chopsticks, sort of, and usually take a bite out of the big pieces, although the nori (seaweed) can be a little tough to chomp through. Sometimes I resort to fingers, though.
Tuna's my absolute favorite - and yes, spicy tuna is to die for! - I really don't think it's any different than eating a rare piece of steak, though. It doesn't taste "fishy" to me, but I'm a BIG seafood fan, so maybe that makes a difference.
We go to Portland, Maine - about an hour away - for sushi on a pretty regular basis.
All I can say is yum...

California roll, mix a thumb size dollop of wasabi with soy sauce, pick the slice of sushi up with chop sticks, dip the edge in the wasabi mixture and pop the whole thing in your mouth! That's how my Japanese SIL taught me to eat it. It's yummy! I love that wasabi rush you get in your sinuses then you taste the rice and stuff in the roll. Makes me want to have sushi for lunch!

Not all sushi is raw fish, as you have found out. The smoked salmon is great, and I love the shrimp. My fave is the egg omelette. (tamago) It has a little bit of sugar cooked in with it and done right it tastes like custard!

I love California Rolls & Spicy Tuna Rolls! I'm a fan of the using chopsticks and stuffing the whole thing in your mouth method. Not very attractive ;) but it tastes darn good!

I love sushi, but I will admit that it is an acquired taste. I love spicy tuna, salmon with avocado and yellow tail. Around here they make some funky rolls like the Rock n Roll and the Volcano roll. DH and I went out for sushi last weekend.
The only problem I have it that it can get expensive.
