View Full Version : Another DIS Meet? Yep! The Annual SW Bash.

Now I know that there seem to be a lot of DIS meets about at the moment, but they are all in Florida. (Oh the pain!)
So..... I gets to thinkin'...... there ought to be an early edition of the South West DIS Meet this year.
The thought processes behind this are:
1. We are in Florida the last two weeks in May, so that time is out.
2. When we return it will be June and that is getting quite close to the Northern Meet in July.
3. I can't wait any longer to get a few beers in.
The date that is set in stone is Saturday May 10th. After this we are in Florida and previous to this we are busy doing all sorts of different things.
There is to be a new venue this year as I have still not recovered from the shock of the bar nearly closing early last year.
This years venue is the Hunters Hall in Kingscote, Gloucestershire. At great expense and considerable hardship Tam and I have visited today and booked for 20 to 30 people, so you better all come! I also had to sample the local brew (there's no need to thank me so roundly) and it has passed muster.
It is a lovely place with an extensive menu and a large garden with a nice children's play area.
Those that fancy it please reply. I will sort out maps, menus etc. when numbers are known.
Tam says she is looking forward to seeing you all..... me, well I just hope you bring enough money to buy me a beer.
Cheers
Kev

Dear Mr String Vest,
Im afraid we cant attend your SW bash, as we will be sunning ourselves in florida!.

Kevin,
Please count me in, but I'm not sure about the bit where you talk about buying you a beer. I think you must be delirious.
At the moment I'll be a party of one, but I'll see if I can drum up some more interest ;)

Sorry - we can't make it either!
We have a certain wedding to attend....I'm sure the 'guilty' parties will be along soon to offer their apologies for missing the meet too!
(And I really can't miss it as I have the great privilege of being a witness!!)

Mr Stringer, glad to see yer've finally got round to admittin to yer UKMeet responsibilities.
I won't be able to make this year's shambles- which should put loads on the gate - coz I'll be at The Staduim of Light watchin us trounce that French Team, Arsenal, in our final Premiership match for a very long time.
Best wishes to all for the event, and a reminder to be thankful to Hilary and MuffinMakin Fi, without who, your own shambles would be almost as bad as our 'local do'.
Astrid
03-23-2003, 04:13 AM
Well I reckon Minchinhamptonwhatsits saw you coming up the drive and decided to bar us all - they couldn't face us all for a third year running!! :)
Many thanks to Tammy for all her hard work in arranging the new venue etc and for agreeing that you could join us for beer sampling.
Not sure as yet whether I'll be able to make it, it's the same day as Carys's school fete so I'll have to see what I can do.
Mind you, if Fiona comes along with some of her delicious muffins (not cookies though - I've had real problems with the ones on my computer all morning  !) that might well seem a lot more desirable than the bottle tombola and splat the rat!
I'll keep you posted.

LOL Jules :teeth: !!!
Put DH and me down on your list - we like to take time out to show Tammy how much we admire her incredible tolerance and endurance levels. (Speaking of tolerance and endurance, commiserations Dave - here's hoping you'll be making a return to the Premiership in two season's time).

03-23-2003, 06:21 AM
Well you obviously just don't want to see me this year - unless we have the usual Essex meet (perhaps you can let us know when you'd be free for that ;)) !!
Will also be living it up in Florida!!!
Have a great time - hugs to Tammy. We may make the Northern Meet so perhaps I'll be able to raise a glass with you there?

Well, Kev - you're determined that I should revisit the haunts of my youth! I spent many a Saturday evening at the Old Lodge disco (aka the New Lodge depending on the bent of the incumbent landlord it seems - I've lost count of the number of times the name's changed). Now you pick the Hunter's Hall, venue for 'The Meet' - one of the coolest places to hang when I was a teenager. Where next year? The Wade Inn at Nailsworth?
Anyway, it seems as though we are destined to be at this SW meet. For the first time ever we've chosen to fly to Florida on a Sunday and it happens to be May 11th. What better way to spend the final few hours before our holiday than in the company of Mr Stringer? Answers on a postcard...
(On second thoughts, make that 2 sides of foolscap ;) )

Dear Mr S.Vest
Sorry we can't make it, would love to be able to see you more than once in May!!! ;) BUT............that's our WEDDING DAY!!!!:bounce: :Pinkbounc
Very remiss of us not to rebook it another day I know, but there you are!;)
Have fun, and perhaps you'd raise a glass (or 6) to us!:) :)

Sorry to be a bit dense with my geography - how far is this from Bristol??
Thanks

UKDEB

Not far, Kaylee. About 20 odd miles north of Bristol.
Kevin Stringer
03-25-2003, 03:57 PM
Karen - I'm afraid public transport is a little known thing round these 'ere parts.
We are a bit rural. A train would get you to Kemble or Stroud, but it would have to be a taxi from there, which is about 10 miles.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Mandy - We'll let you off just this once!
Deb - Tam and I were discussing when you are going and I thought it might be the Sunday. I don't think there has ever been anyone at a DIS Meet who is going the next day.
At the moment there will be about 10 of us. I always said it's quality that counts, not quantity!
At least it wont be crowded at the bar!

I'll happily confess that the 'kind moderator' isn't me - picking you up in North London would have been a bit too much of a detour for me! ;)

Muffins, what muffins?!!:p
Sorry I've been a bit absent recently, a combination of depression at not knowing when we can go to WDW again, and a little enterprise that has kept me from muffin making.
As I work Saturdays I will have to see if I can escape at all, but only if the "tea boy" can step in
No Cookies then Astrid!!

Hi all
I am seriously considering coming. DH is a no - golf widow I am ;) I have one problem I have only driven to Bristol before, so it is only 20 miles more - so I should be able to do it.
I am a bit of a scaredy cat though, so does anybody need a lift from this way and so I won't be lonely and frightened (do you feel sorry for me yet ;) )
Is it an afternoon meet going on to the evening or an evening meet?
Questions, Questions :D

Kaylee - We will probably open up the Meet around 12:00 and start to eat around 1:00 pm.
We usually sit around chatting or quizzing or something until everyone decides thay have had enough.
People tend to leave any time between 4:00 and 6:00. There is no set time to finish, it is just over when we say it's over!
Being one of the meet organisers I have to remain until the last person has gone. I don't like having to stay in a pub for that many hours, but I do it for the glory of the DIS and out of the goodness of my heart! :-)

:( :( Bummer - we can't make it this year, I'm afraid. I promised DH when I booked our May holiday that he wouldn't have to miss any more cricket matches than the two when we're away and that particular day they have a very important 'grudge' match - and they need their best bowler (DH). Oh to be wanted;)
Still - it'll give someone else the honour of being last in the quiz this year:p :p :p And I'd swotted up so much over the winter:rolleyes: :D :D

OK Shirley honey.
The latest list of those attending:
The Stringers
Hilary
Astrid (maybe)
Shirley and hubby
Deb & Matt
Kazzie
Kaylee
Fiona (maybe)
Anyone else interested please feel free to add their name.
There is a website for the Hunters Hall with a map. It is actually much easier to find than the venue we have had for the past 2 years.
http://www.english-inns.co.uk/HuntersHall/
Shirley has generously offered to do the quiz this year which has got both me and Hilary worried as we have nowhere to hide. Our ignorance will be exposed at last!
The Hunters Hall are going to e-mail a menu shortly and I will get it out to all attending so we can order in advance. (Wouldn't want to waste any drinking time ordering food!)
And, yes, I have checked and they are open all day!
Anyone with any questions please let me know.
Cheers

We'll start around 12:00, aiming to eat between 1:00 and 1:30.

Apart from that, I can't really think of anything thanks.

Mattie has been chosen out of loads of applicants to be on a project with 12 other children at the Royal Opera House in Covent Gardren. It will be for 10 Saturdays and then they put on a show at the end.I have just got the times through and it is a day when I will have to do the drop off/pick up:o
I will definitely come to the next meet come hell or high water though:p

Hi Debbie,
Sadly Katharine is back at school in York (for a rest).
The Magical Moments Trivia Game is a handheld electronic game in the shape of Mickey's Head and Ears. It has over 1500 trivia questions loaded in it that you can either activate yourself or when you are in the parks it will display questions for the one you are in. It costs $15 and if you thought you knew a lot about Dis wait until you try some of these they are well hard. We will bring it with us.
Looking forward to seeing you there.

Hi Kaylee, I live in Barnstaple. Ah Cribbs, I do like that mall, closest thing to all the shops in Kingston and Guildford I used to enjoy when I lived in Surrey. Cribbs is a two hour drive for me, but I do pop up there every now and then. What is Plymouth like for shopping? I havn't been there for a while. Mum and dad used to live near Brixham.

Hi,
As a newcomer to the board I am interested in your meet but unfortunately it's a bit too far for a day trip! Do you ever meet in Hertfordshire? if not will details of Essex be posted in due course as I might be able to manage that if I can cope with the drive round the motorway.
PS I'm assuming that newcomers are welcome?

Hi Sue
Of course Newcomers are welcome to the meet's. I haven't been to a meet before and I have been with the Dis since 1999:D
