at the end of pleasantville while sitting on a bench, the macy character asks his wife something like what's going to happen now....she says i don't know and they both start to laugh....suddenly, the macy character changes to the daniels character...

my wife and i IS stupid...please explain....thank you

I just watched this...and that was where I got confused...sorry I can't help but I wanted you to know you're not the only ones who don't get it!

I took it to mean that all the rules had changed and that everyone had to find their own way. Nothing was predetermined anymore. Sort of the difference between the 50's and 60's in the US.

But, what do I know.

That's right. They were laughing because for the first time in their lives ever, the world they lived in was not predictable.

I agree with AngieBelle. Life was not going to be the same as they knew it. Pleasantville was predictable and naive, always the same thing day after day with no corruption. Now everyone is aware of choices that are available to them and that they can make their own decisions about the future.
