I've traveled to WDW and in Airports using wheelchairs but never a cane. I always used to be able to get from my ECV a short distance on my own, but I now have a cane. As dumb as it sounds I don't know where it goes during airport security. Will they let me carry it? It is metal. Also what about rides. Do you give it to the cast member after you get settled? Any experienced cane users opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

They will ask you to put it on the conveyer going through airport security. If you don't feel confortable without it, refuse. They will then use a wand to check you. If they give you a hassle ask them if they are going to pay for the bills if you fall?
As far as canes and rides, it is up to you. You can take it with you on most rides or ask that it be put with your ECV. Just don't depend on a castmember to get it for you if it is with the ECV. They rotate castmembers and the next one may not have a clue. Have a companion get it for you or provide balance for you. My dh or kids assist me. If they are not there the cane remains with me. I have no desire for a falla nd possibly a break.

I just wanted to add that being checked with the wand by security is not that bad at all. Each time we go thru airport security, DD has to be checked. They often do ask if she can get out of the wheelchair and walk thru the checkpoint. When we say no, it's no big deal for them to have someone check her. They don't know to what level anyone is depending on mobility aids, so it's up to you to tell them whether you are able to do what they ask or not. If you need the cane to go that far, just be assertive about your need.

Thanks for your help! I'm entering a whole new world with my disabilities. I'm just grateful that we still get to go this fall.
