Great website for Blizzard of '78

This is a link to the National Weather Service, Boston office. It has all sorts of stuff...stories....pictures.....a slide show...statistics.
It's great for those of us who remember it well as well as anyone who wants to see how bad it really was. Our state was literally shut down for a week.

1978. I was 8 yo. I don't remember much snow then. I'll have to ask my mom if she remembers.

What memories of that terrible storm! The only good that came out of it was that my DH, who was a college student in Boston at the time, made enough money shoveling snow that week to pay for most of the next semester (Of course, college was cheaper then!)

I remember that! My Dad worked for Roche Bros and got stuck at the store that night. He spent the week living with a co-worker until he could get home.

After the snowplow cleared our street we had some wicked cool snowbanks to play on/in. We built a cool snowfort! :) Blocked the entrance off with a huge snow boulder, but a dog still managed to get inside and pee in it. :(

Sadly, our family moved to Nebraska for two years in the late 70s, and we MISSED the whole storm! We were so jealous.

There was what I consider a normal amount when we were there. (We moved back home in 1979.)
I mean, it was cold and it snowed, but not like all my friends were getting back home in Mass.

The picture of Route 9 going through Southborough is making me all teary eyed! The Mobile gas station sign is bringing back so many memories. That station was right next to Middle Road. We lived on Stub Toe Lane, right off middle road, and we used to walk to that gas station in the summer to buy soda and chips (on the days we didn't walk down by the reservoir to get downtown to the Spa to buy soda and chips!) ;)

I remember it all too well...we had no water or electricity for almost a week. Never mind plowing -- we lived on a road that hadn't yet been accepted by the town so we had to band together as a neighborhood and pay for a front end loader to come get us out. We'd walk down to the lake each day and get buckets of water, put them on the sled and haul them back to the house to use for drinking, cleaning, etc. Cooked in the fireplace because we couldn't find the gas grill...it was buried.

And when my sister and I complained about it my father said "You like Little House on the Prairie, right? Well now you're living it!"

Wow!!! Those pics are incredible. It's so hard to imagine that they are actually real. It is just so incredilbe to see these pics & know that this really happened.

As much as I love seeing pics of snow & the blanket of white, it's what's behind all that, that you neve know about that is so mind boggling:D

(That story is actually by my brother.) :p But I'm the editor, so...

Basically, we're featuring stories from all kinds of people. It's fun to read all the memories. We'll be adding more all week. I have a huge backlog - I'm just trying to find the time to add them all.

And as for a Red Sox World Series or another blizzard like that???
I'd be more inclined toward a Bruins Stanley Cup! :jester:
