For those interested in the background of this hymn, it originally appeared as a poem inside a novel, Say and Seal, which Anna Warner co-authored with her sister Susan. In the book, the words are spoken to a dying child, and in that context, there is another stanza not commonly found in hymnals:

My daughter sang Jesus Loves Me to her grandmother before she left for Japan. She included the last verse. Her grandmother is in a nursing home and at this point we don't know how much longer she'll live. Jamie sang this knowing it very well might be the last time she would ever see her grandmother alive.

I read this last weekend to the 10th graders at a retreat that we were on.......I also made cross shortbread cookies for all (100)of them, and they frosted and decorated and ate them at their tables. They really enjoyed the poem while they were enjoying their cookies.


A Coss To Bear
When I open my bible and I see the cross
I must say for words I am at loss
It seems so cruel so grisly so cold
The tears run freely as the story unfolds
I try to imagine what you went through
But nothing comes clear to what you had to do
To nail a man and hang him up on a tree

If anyone wants to listen to a great Christian radion station on-line let me know and I'll send you the link. I'm just not sure if it is appropriate for me to post it here since I work for that station. Late last week they were able to get the feed back on-line.

Jilly, as far as I know they only toured for one year, a few years ago. The tour did stop here but I wasn't able to see it. :( Twila Paris played Mary, which was cool because she was actually pregnant at the time and SCC played Joseph. I heard nothing but excellent things about it. I wish I could have seen it.

I'm singing "Amazing Grace" tomorrow at a funeral for a dear friend who passed this week. He was in the choir with me and when I first started attending this church he would always come up to me, every Sunday, every Thursday at practice, welcome me, tell me how much he loved to hear me sing and was just a sweet old man.

I will miss him.

It was a beautiful service---He and his family were/are so full of love for the Lord--I have no doubts where he is now.

It was also so hard. The service was an hour and a half and I sang "Amazing Grace" during the recessional while the casket and everyone slowly filed out. I looked at the walls, the lights, the ceiling, never dared look at a face, I closed my eyes and had to forget about the emotion of the song and why I was singing it.

But like I said, I was honored to do it.

I sit here and watch snow flurrying down, snow upon snow, coating the top of the 7 inches that came on Friday. It is cleaning up the mess we made as we sought to brush away the wonder of it all just a few days ago. We soiled and salted and imprinted it and now it's being dusted with a clean coat.

Isn't that just like God's grace falling down on us, daily, layer upon layer, despite the way we treated the previous covering??!Why do we get sick of looking at the clean-ness and brightness it creates and resent that it interferes with our lives, messing it up and even wishing it would all just melt away?

We need this cleansing covering to remind us of God's promise, that the mess we created and live in is not forever! We will be robed in white and look forward to the beauty of Springtime in heaven. Isn't it wonderful that through the long, dark, cold days of winter, God sends us a reminder of His constant grace and a hope for the future?

Winter is my least favorite season, however, I am thankful that through it, the Father's Heart of love is poured out on me through the darkest days.

So many are not seeing the beauty of Grace and are not recognizing the sufficiency that lies within it to sustain in ALL circumstances. As much as I long for Springtime, I am in this winter to point others to the Grace of God which saves and provides for our every need! :bounce:

Well...I asked for it and we got it...right CRB??? LOL What they're calling the President's Day Blizzard of 2003 has come in at the 6th biggest storm in Philadelphia history! Unfortunately my one son is sick with a fever and can't play in it. :( They have already called off school for tomorrow, (Tuesday). So we're taking our time just DIGGIN' OUT!

It is so easy to say about a certain situation "Don't look at me - I didn't do it" or "Don't blame me" or "It's not my fault", etc. But Jesus said "everything they ever did, Father, I am willing to take the punishment for - so that they can be forgiven". Wow! What an awesome Savior! I don't ever want to lose the awe of what He did for me.

When I Praise/FFH
(1 Pet 2:9, Ps 22:3, 1 Tim 2:8) "The Bible is clear about how pleased God is when we praise Him. If fact, we read in Psalms that God actually inhabits the praises of His people. A man too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot. He looks for a skilled craftsman to set up an idol that will not topple.

We may never live fully in the victory we have in Jesus while on earth, however when we think of HIS TREMENDOUSLY GREAT LOVE that He has so graciously showered upon us...and the resurrection POWER he pours into our hearts which fills us to OVERFLOWING we can KNOW VICTORY in the midst of imprisonment and pain and suffering and hurting and confusion and death and the deepest sorrow of our souls...in other words we have within us at all times FREEDOM, WHOLENESS, CLEAR-DIRECTION, and most importantly, LIFE!

The God of LIFE will not abandon us! He is faithful!
