We are remodeling our house and we want to put in a fire place. We are not sure if we should get electric or gas. Anyone have either of these and what is your opinion about them.

We have had a gas fireplace for many years and have not had any problems with it. However, I don't know anything about the electric ones.

We are putting on an addition right now also, and we picked out a gas fireplace. It looked much more realistic than the electric ones we had seen. I can't wait until it is completed and we can start to use it!

We have no gas in our neighborhood so when we finished our downstairs, we had to go the electric route. We have had it for 3 years and love it. It warms up a very cold room(its the downstairs of a split level house). We get a ton of compliments on it too! I dont have anything against the gas ones, but we are happy with our electric one.

I have a ventless gas fireplace in my bedroom. It can really put the heat out!

personally I would say wood, but between your 2 choices I would go with Gas.

I agree with Sha_lyn. Wood is better, but gas would be my 2nd choice. I think gas would put out more heat than the electric.

We have wood and I would rather have gas. That doesn't sound good does it?:p
I don't know about electric though.

Ours is gas and wood. Instead of buying gas logs, we turn the gas on to make the fire easier to start. Ours isn't very hot, though. The chimney works too well and sucks out all the heat.

we are actually talking about putting in one of those ventless gas fireplaces...we're waiting for the home remodeling show in our area to check them all out.

We have a gas fireplace and use it all the time. The only disadvantage that I can see with the gas model is the need to turn off the pilot light during the warm weather months. It actually generates some heat, so you'll want to do this.
For most people disconnecting the pilot light probably takes 5 minutes, but I'm mechanically impaired so it usually takes digging out the owner's manual and about a half-hour.

We have had a wood fireplace for the past 11 years. This summer we are going to have it converted to gas.

Thanks everyone for your replies. We are going to the home show in Phila. today and hoping to see what they have to give us some ideas. We used to have a wood fireplace in the old house which I miss. So hopefully soon we will make up our minds.

We have a wood burning fireplace in the living room. I wanted gas, but it would've cost an unbelievably amount of money to tap into the gas line out front, so we opted for wood. DH didn't want a gas one though....he loves the smell of the wood burning...and so do I!
We have an electric fireplace and just love it. It really warms our family room and we like the fact that we can move it if we get tired of it in one room or just want a change.

Went to the home show and guess what not one fireplace. Everything else you wanted put a fire place. Oh well, guees we will be going out next week end to look at gas/electric fireplaces to see which one will be better for us. I think we are leaning toward gas.
