My teenager told me tonight that her school has no heat in most of the classrooms right now and the principal doesn't care. She says she's working on it and that they won't close the school because not enough teachers or student have complained about it.

She told me today that this has been going on for 2 weeks now. She never told me.
I got home today and she had called several news stations. I guess several other kids were too. A teacher made up a petition for the kids to sign about it.
It is crazy for this to be happening. The principal should do something about it, even if it was just to move the kids to a building with heat or use space heaters, provide hot chocolate, not have kids come to school, SOMETHING, besides sit in her heated office telling them she hasn't heard enough complaints yet to do something.

Brrrr Laurie, that's awful!

My DD's school is closed tomorrow but, not because of no heat, it's because of too few teachers! Many of them are sick and, not enough subs. :( DS's school is open tho. :(

My DD school has a delay today but if it had no heat they would close, they have done that in the past, if they didn't close my DD would not be going to school and the principal would be getting a phone call. Good luck Serena, I know some people just don't care.

Why hasn't the superintendant of schools..(the pricipals boss) stepped in?

I understand that heat is needed, but several things bother me about your post. Just because your dd says " the principal doesn't care" doesn't mean it's true. While I'm sure it's being worked on - as a parent I would be calling to see what is going on.

Somehow it wasn't a big enough deal to tell you and then all of a sudden she's calling news stations? Something else is going on here. If nothing else this is a lesson about getting heard early, not just waiting until you're over the top mad.

I'm sorry dissykat, it seems like the principal doesn't care.
Her school has a campus setting. They have different classes in different buildings and no lockers. They have to take their coats and everything with them to each class. It isn't every class, or every building. Some of the buildings have heat.
Four boilers are broken and they are trying to fix them. I understand that. But when I called, all they will tell me is that they are working on it and thank you for calling.
My husband is in the business of heating and air-conditioning and he's been working major overtime recently. I understand problems come up.
What I have a problem with is that those kids are in classrooms trying to learn and they are tooo cold. One class was 43º yesterday.
The kids weren't upset about this until their coats and hats weren't enough to keep them warm. They were being patient and cooperative. Yesterday the kids brought cameras to take pictures of thermometers in the classrooms, pictures of the teachers in coats and hats trying to teach classes, and the students trying to write with gloves on.

I need to call the superintendant. I hope it isn't neccessary.

I would be mad too! There is no way I would send my son to school with no heat and I live in Mississippi!! Although it is cold as heck here today. Thats just ridiculous, heck they could buy some of those small heaters for the time being couldn't they??

Serena is the school in Washington Twp. If so I saw on the news last night what that Idiot Principal said. He didn't want the kids at home alone but he thought it was ok for them to sit in a cold school. That is such crapuehy:mad: He needs a good kick
