View Full Version : Rides/Attractions that cause you to shed a tear

I was reflecting upon my last trip to WDW (almost 1 1/2 weeks ago) and was thinking about the attractions that caused me to tear up and get a lump in my throat. They were:
1) One man's dream at MGM-I lost it during the movie
2) Spaceship earth
3) the Hall of Presidents (my first time viewing this attraction)
So, what are your most emotional rides/attractions at WDW???:bounce: :Pinkbounc

It's not a ride but can be considered an attraction - it's my first glimps of Main Street looking towards the castle.

My mom's favorite ride was POC. She is gone now but when I go on it I know she's there enjoying it with me.
It will be harder this year. My father just passed away before Christmas. He and I shared many trips to WDW, just the two of us. Among his favorites were Small World, COP and TOT. I know I will be very misty eyed on my next trip when I go on these rides. But I have wonderful memories!

I always get a bit teary eyed during the Festitival of the Lion King because its such a beautiful show.
The Candlelight at Epcot always brings tears to my eyes, and gives me the chills.

Definitely Festival of the Lion King - I'm a sucker every time and I cry all through it. I also cried during BatB, Fantasmic, Illuminations, Tapestry of Dreams, and ToT (but that was only because it shared the you-know-what out of me).
Gosh - I'm such a blubbering baby!

I always tear up during the song at the end of the American Adventure.
Illuminations did it during my last trip, just because it was so beautiful and I was so happy.
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster does it, but you try keeping your eyes open at 60 MPH and see if yours don't tear up too! :teeth:

let's see - I started crying the moment the restraints came over my body on RNRC...I do NOT like roller coasters! (took me a good 15 minutes to stop crying afterwards!)
Other tear-jerkers for me
Seeing Fantastmic for the first time
Beauty and the Beast
anytime I hear the song 'circle of life'
the moment my honey proposed to me in Sleepy Hollow.

Watching the Tapestry of Dreams parade thru the eyes of a six year old, who had completed his mask at all the Kidscots in all the lands of EPCOT, and truly believes in the power of wishes.
What happens is that the child is given a mask at the 1st Country they stop at, and are given markers to decorate the mask, in addition, there is a cardboard star attached to the mask that had each country listed on it, and a punch out circle in the middle which is the child's "wish"..... when you stop at all the other counties, the child can add additional decorations to the mask, and speak with a native of the country who helps out. The very special thing is that on the star that was attached at the 1st stop, the native cast member writes the word "DREAM" in their own language..... the Child is told to make a wish/dream once the star is completed, and then during the parade, they will have a chance to put their "dream/wish" (the punch out circle in the middle of the star) in a net the "dream catchers" will have at the end of the parade.
It was truly magical to watch my 6 year old nephew wave his mask during the parade, and then hold onto the circle, close his eyes, and make a wish that was so beautiful, it would make you cry (can't tell what the wish was, as he said, because then the wish wouldn't come true, but he did say it wasn't for anything you could hold in your hands or buy in a store!) tears rolled down my smiling face.....

Another one for the Festival of the Lion King.... And I have to admit the Hunchback deserved more standing ovations than it got!
The end of American Adventure. I've never survived that one intact.
The beginning of Lion King (the movie part). Nasty sob material there.
Any time I see a child's face with that sense of wonder and magic. I'm a complete wreck when it comes to big eyes on tots.

Things that get me everytime.....
American Adventure
HoP
that first stroll up main street each trip, just after opening
the flag lowering
seeing Tink come out of the castle
the song at the end of illuminations
"the donkey boat" ride in Mexico (what my then 5 year old called it. - "what was your favorite part about today, buddy? The donkey boat ride, momma. Can we do it again?)
Things that have gotten me sappy when i least expected it....
the first day in WDW after my long awaited 20 year gap. We hit AK first. (my DH insisted) Caught the opening they have there and was so struck by emotion that i ran thru the gates, hugged Minnie (not my fav character - but the closest one to me) and cried like a baby and kept saying "Thank you, thank you......." What i was thanking her for i will never know.)
the most sweet and excited little girl i have ever seen, catching her first ever glimps of Mickey at Chef Mickeys - i cried like an idiot. Her parents probably thought i was unbalanced.
hearing a child in line for Splash Mt say thanks to their parents for bringing him to WDW and telling them he loved them. - i was so taken aback by this. You always hear about snotty kids, not these wonderful human beings some people are out there raising.
seeing a child who is on their vacation as a part of the make a wish progam, and they are smiling from ear to ear. - For the Grace of God go you or I. I am thankful for such progams. They truley do God's work. I am also thankful that i have been so blessed that i have not had to use their services, and pray that i don't have to.
I am sure there will be several others some day, for as you can see, i am a bawling mess.

THat is so sweet! I think we are raising spoiled brats (and acted like it at times on our vacation too LOL) but maybe a happy medium between snotty and wonderful human beings because they did also quite often tell us thank you for bringing them and that they loved us. They have their moments.

I got teary when I first walked down Main Street for the first time at MK. I just couldn't believe I was finally there! That's what you get for having to wait 33yrs though. :)

I can get teary eyed without even being there! I taped my DD's first trip at the age of 2. Just watching that lil girl (7 years later) jumping up and down in her stroller shouting..."Rella's castle Mommy!!! 'Rella's castle..." or the day we surprised her with a Pooh/Tigger breakfast...."Tigger...Tigger...Tigger!!!!!"...gets me every time. All I have to do is say "'Rella's castle" to DH and HE gets teary-eyed!!! LOL!:p :p :p

that was taken from the rubble of 9/11/01 that is on display in the outer lobby of American Adventure at EPCOT and the Flag lower ceremony at dusk at Magic Kingdom!!!
If you've never taken time for either one of these, make them a point your next trip.
Plus RnRc scared the bejeebers outta me the first three time I did it. No more tears now though.

Here is one nobody has mentioned. It gets me every time. The pre-show of the Honey I shrunk the Audience at EPCOT. You know, the one sponored by Kodak that talks about kids and imagination. The song, music, pictures, and sound are very moving. It brings a tear to my eye every time. The attraction is very emotional. The pre-show makes you cry then the actual show is very funny and has cool 3-D affects. Does anyone else think so?

The Festival of the Lion King gets me every time. One Man's Dream really got me going. Just seeing the Magic Kingdom the first time each trip.
Last summer I heard a boy (he looked to be about 8-10 years old)on the monorail say that his feet hurt. His mother told him that his feet were probably VERY tired and that's why they hurt. He said,"You know, I was so busy having fun and being happy that I didn't even think about being tired!" That got me REALLY teary eyed. I wanted to go over and hug him!

The True colors one makes me bawl! The castle on the last night allways gets me. People comming up to us at dinner and saying how good our kids are...(this never happens at home!)Watching all the kids be so nice to each other.... I know it sounds stupid but our kids are different ... somehow nicer at WDW... Have you seen the new commercial with the older brother holding his little sis in Epcot ....Watching the light show....It is just to much! I can go from smiles to tears in 1 second! My DH says it is hormones. :D
You know, I completely forgot how I do cry at the Kodak preshow at Epcot. Reading the post brought it right back! I can visualize it and I try not to look at anybody, in case they wonder what's wrong with me and why am I crying?
I also get tears during Fantasmic as the "Imagination" song is being sung and then they transition to "Beauty and the Beast" with the three floats going by of Belle, Beast, Eric and Ariel, and Snow White.
Luckily for me, I'll be crying again at these moments in 10 more days!

I have to say there are several that do it for me:
Candle light processional at Epcot
The American Adventure - Epcot American Pavillion
One Man's Dream - MGM
The biggest one was watching my DD's on our first trip in 1998. Watching the two of them oogling over the view down main street at the castle towering at the end of it was enough for me.

The True Colors thingie, which I had forgotton until now, thank-you all very much!!
My dd's first peak at the Castle each time we visit.....
My biggest cry to date has been while sitting on the curb on Main St., by Tony's, waiting for Spectro to start..and having my dh (who had to be almost dragged to WDW) say "We should do this again, but by ourselves, not another family. Start planning."

Thanks for all of the responses!
I am tearing up reading your stories!!!
Another thing that makes me emotional while at Disney are all of the unexpected performers that we encounter, like the living statue in France, the Jammitors, and when we ate at Spoodles there was this really funny performer balancing knives and a magician in the Boardwalk lobby. I think that is Disney magic at its best and it makes me tear up!!!
Keep the stories coming!!!

Thanks for this thread, I can not tell you how many times I got chills reading each one of these:D
Okay, I cry when I check in. This last time it was when the CM told me we got a Boardwalk view!! But I have cried checking into the All Stars as well, so it does not matter.
Any of the music of the parades. Thank God we have the CD's that have the music of all of them. I do need to order the more recent ToD one, we have the Millenium Celebration, I am sure its almost identical, but I NEED it!
My sons first trip in December, 2000 he was 13 months old and said "Bye Bye Bear" at the Bear show in MGM, it was amazing.
I cried the other day when we saw The Lion King on the IMAX during that opening scene, real tears running down my face!!
I cried when we joined DVC because I knew I have 40+ years of more tears coming my way!!:D
Now I find out that I'm not the only one! Lord, I could spend a month at the GF Concierge on the Platinum plan with the money that I've spent on unneeded therapy! Well, maybe not unneeded...
Anyhow, I'm prone to tear up at the first sight of the Partners statue. For many of us baby boomers, Disney represented all that was good in the world we grew up in. Virtue always triumphed over evil, Annette never showed her navel, and my Davey Crocket Coonskin Cap was so cool!
I remember where I was when I heard that Walt had died as clearly as I do the day JFK was assassinated. We'd lost someone who had helped define the world we grew up in. And many of us have also lost the parents that introduced us to Mr. Disney, wonderful people who told us that it was OK to believe in a talking mouse and the Magic. My Mom, long departed, is always with me when we stop by to say hi to Walt & Mickey.
I like to think that early in the morning, after the last 'Good Night Kiss' has transformed the Castle and the last CM has swept down Main St, that Walt & Mickey step down off the foundation of their statue and once again stroll hand in hand through the wonderland they created.

The fireworks this July 4th had me bawling. They were so amazing -- you literally did not know where to look because so many were going off at once. I thought "Here I am with my healthy family in this place I love MOST in the whole world." It was the first July 4th after 9/11 and all the fright and sadness of that crazy year -- I just lost it! Everyone here should visit at least once on July 4th and watch those fireworks from the beautiful beach at the Polynesian.

OK.. not really a cryer in the parks (I go to have fun, not a good cry ;) ), but here's the ones that I find most emotional:
The Candlelight Processional at EPCOT (Wonderful!)
American Adventure in EPCOT (especially the Civil War segment)
The last movie in the Animation Tour at MGM (Bambi's mother... :()
"Death of the Beast/ Trasnformation" scene in Beauty and the Beast at MGM (especially if it's a very good Belle)

I must say the one that makes me cry is Hunchback. That was my favorite. I really hate it that it is closed now. The next one would be the Lion King. I am such a wuss when it comes to stuff like that. DH always laughs at me when I cry at animated movies, books, etc.

Gosh what a wonderful thread this is, I love it.
I'm a member of mushy, blubbering crying club also! I'm likely to be found a crying mess at any given time at Disney. The ones that alway do are the parades, Beauty and the Beast, and just looking down Main St and realizing that I'm at Disney World.
On the last trip ds-7 at the time- and me had a day to our selves at DTD. It was really quiet, no crowd around at all, and he asks me "Mom, is Mickey real or is he just someone in a costume?" I was not expecting this and I'm not one to tell an outright lie to my son so I asked him what he thought. His answer brings tears to my eyes even now. He said "Mom he's real in my heart, because that's where I feel happy when we are here." (And he's more like one of the spoiled brats discussed in an earlier post, trust me, lol). When I think of what he said, I believe in Mickey and all the magic of Disney because that's where I feel happy too.
BTW-Ajax-wow-Mickey and Walt strolling around in the Magic Kingdom-that's imagination and Magic-everything that Disney is! Thank you for that mental picture that will forever stay in my mind ;)

I had to really hold it back watching my DD getting all kinds of attention during the ToD parade.
Just seeing her having the time of her life gets me choke up at random times at WDW. Doesn't have to be anything in particular...
Oh yeah, I almost became a 6'4" blubbering fool at the Cinderella breakfast. DD's smile throughout the whole experience just turned me into a big tub of goo. Got the photos taken through my wet eyes:p

I love that happy, blubbery feeling I get at Disney!
MK - every time I see the castle walking down Main Street for the first time. Also, we always try to time BTMR so that we are riding it as the fireworks are starting. This is an awesome experience and has moved me to tears!
MGM - Hunchback did it for me every time!
Epcot - Spaceship Earth, when the car turns at the top and you see the Earth from "Space" - I love it!
True Colors preshow - glad to see I'm not the only one who gets misty-eyed!
Animal Kingdom - Seeing the Tree of Life for the first time as you walk over the bridge.
Festival of the Lion King also always gets to me.
Anytime I see a special needs child (or adult) having the time of their life at Disney.

Me too.
I saw that happen at the AK a couple of weeks ago.
An orangutang 'character', whose name escapes me right now, gave a special needs child in a wheelchair a big hug, and the result was one of the most unbridled displays of true joy I've ever witnessed! It went on for several minutes. Then, as the child was being wheeled away, the character pushed away the big man he was posing with (in jest), and ran back to the kid for another hug.
It was a great moment that I'll always remember. That CM went the extra mile.

1. The True Colors song at HISTA.
2. I remember being at MGM & seeing the Beauty & the Beast Show for the first time. It hadn't been open for long so it was most people's first time also. This was even before it had its own theatre. They used to show it at an outdoor seating area that's not there anymore. When the show was over, 75% of the audience was on their feet practically screaming with excitement and crying at the same time. It was at that time that I knew Disney had a winner & would be showing this for years to come.

There are two...one in the past, one in the future:
PAST: Fantasy in the Sky when Tinkerbell flies down from the castle...the look on my daughter's face was priceless!
FUTURE: The first time I get to take my three year old son on the WDW Railroad...it is a promise that I made to him and intend to keep as he LOVES trains.

About the only time ive ever cried at an attraction is when I know it will be the last time I'll ever see it (attraction closing). I can remember Mission to Mars, World of Motion, Journey Into Imagination, etc... but especially Horizons. Let's just hope I wont have to cry when I see Alien Encounter this year.
SAVE ALIEN ENCOUNTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!
I try to be strong, but I just can't keep it together when I get there. The True Colors gets me every time. Watching my 2 year old loving the same rides I loved when I was a child. And this might sound strange, but seeing her at the Playhouse Disney show. I been there 3 times with her and no matter what, I cry. I cry from the first song to the last. I know that she loves the characters so much and seeing her so excited about them just gets me. Even watching the videos of it, I cry. I guess it's the fact that I am giving her the same kind of memories my mom gave me. I can't forget the commercials. They just bring back all the great memories that our family shared when I was young and all the memories I will have with my family in the future. Even when I'm trying to be cool, someone always catches me crying. It's usually my DH. I'm glad to know I'm not alone. :earsboy: :earsgirl: :earsgirl:
I guess it's all about "Making Memories"

It was truly magical to watch my 6 year old nephew wave his mask during the parade, and then hold onto the circle, close his eyes, and make a wish that was so beautiful, it would make you cry (can't tell what the wish was, as he said, because then the wish wouldn't come true, but he did say it wasn't for anything you could hold in your hands or buy in a store!) tears rolled down my smiling face.....
Ok....hand me a hankie. sniff Mickey

I want to say first off that I love this thread. Thanks for the sharing of the memories folks!
This is the list of magical boo-hoo moments from my last visit.
#1 Meeting Mickey Mouse for the first time!
#2 Standing in front of the American Flag that was taken from the rubble of 9/11/01 that is on display in the outer lobby of American Adventure at EPCOT . That one about did me in.
#3 One Man's Dream @ MGM - I just kept thinking "Thank you Walt!" as I walked through the exhibit. The man had vision and a good heart.
#4 Watching the expressions on little kids' faces. There is magic everywhere if you open your heart to it. Kids are great!
#5 The Partners statue got to me too. Again, "Thank you Walt!"
#6 I also got tears during Fantasmic! It was a really neat show.
I guess that would be enough. lol Mickey

True Colors get to me too! The pictures, the music...it may be advertising but it's SO good. I also feel teary-eyed when I see the parades, Spaceship Earth, the train station and my big favorite, the Haunted Mansion.

Most definitely True Colors in EPCOT.
Also....... Beauty & the Beast stage show
The film clips at the end of The Great Movie Ride
The last day of our trip always makes me sad, until I think about planning the next one. :Pinkbounc
All the Disney commercials they have on now get to me. Sometimes I have to leave the room so my family doesn't think that I have completely lost it.

In 2000 I took my then 8 and 9 year olds for the first time. To see the look on their faces when we stood at the end of Main Street looking at the castle. The pure enjoyment in each of their eyes, made me feel like a kid again. I wish I could have bottled that moment!

Oh man, I really lost it on our first family trip in 1995 when went to the character greeting area in MK, and i saw a little boy in a wheelchair getting hugs from Pooh Bear.
Then 7 years later, with my 5 YO DD, giving Pooh a big hug and a jar of Hunny - how grateful I was to be so fortunate
to see her happy & healthy ....

On my last trip I got kind of misty eyed during the end of the preshow at Honey I Shrunk the Audience. It was the montage of all the photos with "True Colors" in the background.

Bump-bump-bump [plane lands].... "Welcome to Orlando," says the Pilot.
Walking out of the airport when the doors open automatically, *whoosh* and the warm Orlando air hits you and the flowers and palm trees are beautiful as we walk across to get our car from National.
Driving under the Welcome to Walt Disney World arch. "Take a picture - quick quick - here's the camera!"
Pulling into my resort. "We're checking in today!" I say to the gate keeper.
At the front desk, "Have you stayed here before?"....."Welcome HOME!!!"
At Epcot -
When the Innoventions plaza fountains begin and they take you by surprise, and you just grab a seat and watch the magic, and listen to the score.
"...a new age of understanding and cooperation, on this, our spaceship earth..."
At American Adventure, the whole sequence: "My fellow citizens of the world ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." - JFK
"I have a dream this afternoon that the brotherhood of man will become a reality...." -MLK Jr.
"...The Eagle has Landed"
Illuminations - the very beginning, "...Reflections of Earth" - *blowing out the torches*, and the very end - *CRRRRRACK*
At MGM/Disney Studios -
Beauty & The Beast - the end of the introduction, "...who could ever learn to love - a Beast..." and the finale of "BE OUR GUEEEEEEEST!!!!!" and the end of the show, when they release the doves. (Too bad the hawks had to spoil that for us.)
(Used to) Hunchback show - "... just one day out theeeeeeeeeeeere!!!!!!"
Great Movie Ride, "Lights - Camera - ACTION!"
The animation tour movie - montage of all the emotional moments. Bambi and Dumbo.... 'nuff said.
Animal Kingdom -
Lion King Show - "In the Circle of --- LIIIIIIIIIIIFE!!!!!!!!"
Magic Kingdom -
Spectromagic - "On this Magic Night....."... and Jiminy says, "And now, the Magic Kingdom proudly presents, in a million points of
musical light, the magical worlds of Disney, in SPECTROMAGIC!" *[Brass fanfare]* I just love that.
And anytime you see Mickey just walking through the parks unexpectedly, and he kisses your hand... it's so sweet. I never cease to amaze myself about how excited I get seeing Mickey Mouse - I mean, I know he's real, and is probably actually a she even, but geez - IT'S MICKEY!!!!!!!

Best post ever.

I usually don't cry at things - movies, events, etc like a lot of people do but I always tear up during the film cuts in Great Movie Ride and the animation tour. I also have been known to cry when I finally find Poohbear to get his autograph after searching most of the trip to find him. Being there and seeing fireworks on my birthday makes my eyes glisten too.

Okay, I've cried more reading this thread than I've cried in WDW ... but the ones that get me are Hall of Presidents and American Adventure.
We should probably forward this thread and the other one to the 'Passporter' folks. They could publish a 'Weepers Guide to WDW'. ;) Not that I need one, I tear up when the confirmation letter from CRO shows up in my mailbox. :D

Forgot one - Carousel of Progress gets to me also. I can just picture my grandmother & my mother being younger. It gives my heart a little "tug" every time I see it. :)
Every time we see it I lean over to tell my DD's "gramma grew up using that" or "Nana used to have an ice box just like that". I just love that attraction. :p

I couldn't stop a few tears when the Mayor came out to officially open the Magic Kingdom. It was my daughters' first trip, and my first time in 23 years. We were oblivious--just standing around waiting for the park to open--when the festivities began. When Mickey and the character train pulled in I really lost it. Pure Disney Magic!!! Only 2 more years till we get to do it all again!!:earsgirl:

I remember going to WDW for the first time as an adult a few years ago. It had been almost 20 years since I had been. We had 12 wonderful days in the world. First night we ate at Chef Mickey's and then crammed as much as we could in an hour at Magic Kingdom before it closed. After the parade was done and everyone was leaving, I could hear the narrator giving the goodnight speech...something like....."we hope you enjoyed your visit at the Magic Kingdom and hope you come again soon..." or something like that. I started bawling like a baby as I walked down Main Street toward the exit. I kept looking back at the castle.....lol. I knew I had 12 days ahead of me, but hearing that speech made me feel like my vacation was over before it got started. Maybe I was remembering back to my childhood when 2 days was all we had to spend in the park. I did not want the fun to end.
