View Full Version : Do you have any Phobias?

Mine are in no particular order.....

Spiders, especially the big house spiders and tarantulas

Lifts - I got stuck in one once when I was in Italy. All the lights went out and it was stuck between two floors. I do go in them very occasionaly but I am terrified that they will get stuck again, so if I have the option to use the stairs I will always opt for them instead! :p

Small rooms without any windows - but that's because they remind me of lifts!!!

Dentists

Coffins/Graveyards/ and anything else associated with death - just freaks me out!

So how about you...whose next?

Alligators/crocodiles. I don't know why, but I feel like they all have my name or something. "Hey! Did you hear! Maggie's coming to Orlando this summer, let's make sure we all greet her."  :o :o I would love to parasail at WDW, but I'm afraid that at the end of the sail, they'll dunk me in the lake, and some alligator will be waiting there. I'm also a little leary about being on the beach at night to watch the EWP.

Same with sharks, great whites in particular.

I'm also a little claustophobic. I have to not think about it in elevators or on a plane. :o

I'm just a loon. :teeth:

The #1 thing that gives me the heebie geebies is SNAKES any and all kinds fake, real it really doesn't matter.

I am also uneasy about heights over 2 or 3 stories I get the feeling that I'm rocking and loosing my balance.

I guess I'm weird too!!!

I have a fear of being trapped in a car that is going under water. My parents recently got me the escape hammer!!!

My biggest fears are: snakes, rodents, big spiders, gators, guns and being on a very steep road without guard rails.

Heights!! Its terrible. We went to see an IMAX movie in Las Vegas this past week. It was about astronauts at the Space Station. In the opening scene, they had an astronaut OUTSIDE the space station doing some work and they changed the angle of the camera so you could see Earth below him and I nearly fell out of the chair. It scared me so bad I had to pull the goggles off. My husband was laughing at me because I spent more than half of the movie with the goggles off.

Mine is not really a phobia, but I really HATE to touch/feel cotton! Not the material, but like cotton balls, etc.

When we were little, my brother used to sneak cotton balls in my pockets, so that when I put my hand in the pocket, I would accidentally feel the cotton. I hate the way it feels -- kinda squeaky(?) and it goes right THROUGH me!!!

Now, that's weird...;)

All of you people who are afraid of elevators, DO NOT move to NYC! :p

I have a fear of mice, all rodents, really, water (can't swim) and bicycles... I know....

My son has one fear, Vacuum Cleaners!!

gravymom
01-09-2003, 10:54 AM
Robinrs,

My oldest DD used to be hysterically afraid of our vacuum cleaner. Then it died (yay!) and I got a Miele. It is very quiet and she actually wants to help me vacuum. You might want to check that out.

I hate heights (but love coasters - go figure!) I hate rides that just drop you but I make myself ride TOT. Spiders, snakes, gross looking insects - can live without. Hate flying (just taking off and landing). Can't deal with elevators that go up higher than 14-15 floors.

Can anyone say "Prozac?"

Spiders and driving over big bridges - if I'm the passenger I'm alright, but I won't drive over them myself. Especially over water.

I don't have phobias, as in not able to look at pictures and such. But I don't like spiders, and mosquitos turn me into a raving lunatic. They love me and I make it my mission to make sure there are none in the house. And I know when they're there. I'll hear that little buzzing noise in my ear.

I am TERRIFIED of closed spaces!!!! I hate elevators and airplanes and anything else where I think I'm going to lose air. I also greaty dislike the sight of bugs especially those spiders...ya know in Indiana Jones when they go into the tunnel and see all the bugs, I think I would have had a heart attack and just died, but first would have ran out of the tunnel cause ewwww, wouldn't want them crawling on me after I'm lying there. (I'm pretty weak)

Fire.. (Isn't that a hoot with my DH setting himself ablaze while smoking with the oxygen on??)

Drowning..

Rats..

Having anything over my face - or being in a very small closed up area where I feel like I can't breathe.. (Like if I had to crawl under my bed to get something..)

Closed in places for the most part. An MRI machine in particular. I yelled for them to get me out! Needless to say, my appointment was rescheduled and the doc prescribed Xanax to take ahead of time.

Elevators.

I'm terrified of drowning and that is one of my biggest fears. Once my mom and I were in rush hour traffic going across a bridge and it took everything in me not to freak.
I'm also claustrophobic and so I'm scared of suffocating.

Well, I think I am stranger than all of you. I can handle spiders, snakes, heights, bridges, et al but the one thing I am terrified of is .... snails!!! And they know it. Sometimes I will open my front door and one will be stuck to it, sending me screaming into the house (I never see them on anyone else's door, just mine). My son thinks it's hilarious and gladly removes them for me (for a fee). Have no idea where this phobia came from but it makes me mad and I keep telling myself I will get over it but I don't. I have a close friend who is afraid of wood...I have to remove the little toothpicks from her sandwiches and if you want to see her really freak out, take a wooden spoon out of the drawer.

People are sooooo funny!

Roaches (the worst - one of the main reasons I moved out of Florida. When I'm going to Florida I worry about maybe I'll see one, maybe one will get in my suitcase and come home with me, etc. Its pretty bad!)

Grasshoppers

Heights - no roller coasters for me!

The bridges that open up in the middle for tall boats to pass through. I have had a TON of nightmares in my lifetime of driving over them, not being able to stop and they are open, etc. Avoided them by leaving Florida too! (I'm sick I know...)

Going to the doctor & dentist (maybe not a total phobia but I put it off as long as humanly possible)!

I've just about overcome my phobia regarding dentists. My biggest phobia now is snakes. I can't even look at a photo of a snake :(

I have no desire to seek treatment for this either.

I hate elevators!! I will only go in on if I have my husband (since he knows how to open the doors), and a cell phone. Im scared the doors wont open

then snow not scared of the snow but scared to go out of our town when it is snowing. When I was in the 10th grade I lived 25 miles out of town. I was attending school and it was snowing, not hard or nothing, My mom was in town buying food for the cows. and she over heard truckers talking about the storm and it was about two hours away. So she pulled me out of school and we then went shopping for us. We figured we had an hour since it was a 30 minute drive we left the store and about 15 miles out the wind came up, then we were 7 miles from home. and that is when the Snow came. and we were in the pick up and you couldnt see the front of the pick up. my mom told me to face the back and I did it took us 20 minutes to drive 7 miles. Every since then I cant stand to go out of town when it snows. It used to be rain and fog, but this summer I lost that fear, by just being out in it.

and I hate to drive just thinking about it makes me shack and sweat. Dont know why. I use to drive until four years ago.

Tornados, spiders (doesn't help that I'm allergic), and escalators (mainly the down escalators- I absolutely will not ride one) are the three things I am so scared by that I can't deal w/ them. Other things I am extremely scared of are not being able to move (being trapped or pinned down for example) and having my face covered up. I guess I really am strange!

honeywolf7
01-10-2003, 02:13 AM
Fire-I was scared of it even before this but during my Freshman year of High School, my dad set a motor home engine on fire while he was working on it and then that Thanksgiving my mom had put a light bulb in a trash bag and it was my job to burn the trash. About half-way through the Detroit Lions/Denver Broncos game, I heard something that sounded like a car door slam. We went outside and our backyard was on fire. It's probably the scariest thing I've ever experienced.
Lizards-they creep me out
closed in spaces-MRI machines and sometimes elevators (depending on my mood that day, I guess.)
underwater tunnels
those overpasses that BT was talking about....I had a nightmare once that I was on one of those and it suddenly ended.

We have all kinds of lizards here in Hawaii, mostly geckos which live in many people's houses.

Dentists - I will only go if I absolutely have to.

Wasps - I just hate them around me.

Water - I've been frightened of being in it since I was a kid. Mind you, I did learn to swim in the early 80's, but I'm still scared of it.

I do not like mice and rodents.

I hate driving over big bridges or between those concrete barriers. Tunnels aren't the greatest for me either. I've had some major panic attacks. I don't usually drive on vacation because of any one of those things crop up I freak out. I think the problem is I stopped commuting to work when I became a SAHM, for the past 12 years I've pretty much driven in our town only.

I'm a nervous flier.

Public speaking is not my favorite.

Oh and for some reason Nuns in full black habits freak me out. My Mom said I've been that way ever since I was a little kid. They still make me break out in a sweat. Once we ran into about 20 of them at Disney trying to walk to the wrong way and cut in line.
