What is your best WDW theme park secret? For example, I have read about/ seen the part of the Winnie the Pooh ride, where Mr. Toad hands off the deed to the ride to Pooh, the marker in EPCOT that represents the center of WDW, the 'raining' umbrella in MGM, the key under the mat in the Muppet ride, etc.

Any others? I am going to WDW in two weeks and love to show my companions how knowledgable I am by pointing these out (I know - pretty pathetic, but I am truly an obsessive planner);) ;)

When your in line for Indiana Jones you go past a well, I think to the right of the entrance. If you pull on the rope you'll hear someone down in the well. And this isn't something you'll see but if your at the Animal Kingdom and there's a long line to get in try going through the Rainforest Cafe. There's a park entrance at the rear of the gift shop.

DH and I saw the marker in EPCOT for the first time on our last trip.
My favorite is the ring in the concrete at the end of Haunted Mansion.

Behind the castle is a fountain with Cinderella. If you bend down and look at the fountain the crown on the back wall appears to crown Cinderella.

In the pre-show Muppet 3D room at MGM there is a net full of green jello hanging from the ceiling. It signifies Annette Funicello.

When you go to board the doom buggies at the Haunted Mansion - notice the last bat head before you board has no features on it, it is smooth from all the hands rubbing over it through the years.

The claw marks on the floor of The Country Bear Jamboree.

If you're by the Haunted Mansion at night, look up at the top story right above the front door. If you watch it for a while you'll notice a light pass by it and some shadows, it looks like 2 people are walking by with a lantern.

On the floor of the Pooh ride on the right in Owl's house there is a picture of Pooh and Moley from Mr.Toad

I always like looking for Devine at AK. We have been lucky enough to see her twice and got some really good pictures of her. She doesn't like for you to be able to see her face.

I also like the ring at the haunted mansion and the rose on the grave at the haunted mansion.

Not a big secret ... but I like the walkway that goes from Mickey's Toontown [is that what it's still called] to Space Mountain. Follows the railroad track. One of the few quiet places in MK.

Not sure if it's a "secret" or not but one of my favorite lesser-known attractions is the Expo Hall of Main Street. There's a small theater that shows old Disney cartoons (like the old Main Street Cinema but in color and with seats!), a couple exhinits, some nice photo opportunities, and usually in the late morning I've seen a variety of Disney Princesses there (Aurora, Cinderella, Snow White, Mary Poppins). Definatly a fun hideaway.

We found the maze in the UK with our trip last week. It was dark, and DH was following me. I made a wrong turn and he stepped wrong and hurt his leg. He did not think it was so great.

I learned lotsa cool little secrets while working at WDW. :) My fav is what we learned about Main Street.

The entrance to the park is like a theatre. The ticket area is like a lobby, you go through tunnels lined with "coming attraction" type posters. The train station is the curtain and then you go through it and you're in the show. :)

Oh and here's something interesting. Did you know how much psycology goes into developing a park? Main Street is designed, through forced perspective, to look as if it's much longer than it is when you're heading towards the castle. In the mornings, you are all excited and have the energy to walk. When you're walking away from the castle towards the exit, it looks shorter. That's good for the way out when you're all tired. hehe. Also, since most people walk on the right side of the street, all the food shops are on the right as you enter for those wanting breakfast, while the shops are on your right on the way out!

I met the imagineer who designed the Liberty Square Xmas shop. He told us that if you look closely, it's actually three seperate shops with the walls opened between them. They are supposed to be owned by 3 different colonial families- a German family, a woodcarver's family, and a musician's family. Check out the details the next time you go!

I am sure everyone is sick of this one, but it is still my favorite to find. The "Wedding Ring" embedded in the cement outside of the haunted mansion. We were looking at it once and a HM CM came and told us "you know thats not really a ring, so please move on" I thought maybe we were in the way of people exiting, but no there was no one there and no one in line so I said I am just going to take a picture... he said "I would rather you not" I was so pissed, I gave his name at guest relations and then I felt really bad. hehehe but oh well its a fun one to see and then read the stories about!

On the Keys to the Kingdom tour we learned even more about the theater-like setup of MK. Once you go through the train station and are into the "movie," the first thing you see are the credits. If you look up at the names on the windows of the buildings along Main Street, you see the names of all the people who were responsible for building the park. The very last name is Walt's, but you really have to know where to look because it is on the backside of the last building on the right (ice cream parlor?). It seems like he's almost hidden from view, but Roy wanted him there so that he would always have a view of the castle.

If you like this kind of info, you definitely should take this tour. Great stuff.

My DD5 & I found the talking water fountain in EPCOT (on the left side of the big fountain in FW as you are walking toward WS - right near Mousegear). DD took a drink, and the water fountain flushed! DD laughed so hard. Then she took another drink, and it said something else funny. People were looking at us like we were crazy, because we were just standing there taking sips and cracking up! A treasured moment for both of us, for sure.:D

I have one that I could never find - and I'm skecthy on the details, so I'm not quite sure if this is correct. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate some insight.

I recall once reading that if yo sit on the benches by the fountains in France, something happens. I don't recall what it was, music perhaps? Does anyone know the area and what I could be talking about?

Someone mentioned the green jello in Muppet Vision 3-D, but one of the great secrets, cause everyone rushes by to get to where they are going, are the walls outside that have graffitti all over them. Stop and read some of it sometime.

These aren't secrets but if any of your friends are first timers....

1) The sidewalks that twinkle at night in Epcot. Take the righthand path after the Epcot ball. You'll come upon them. Absolutely magical. I get a kick out of seeing them every single time.

2) The shooting water fountains (not the big one) that the kids play in just before you enter the world showcase. If you can time it just right you're unsuspecting buds will never forget their first encounter with these. What a blast!

This is a little hard to explain in writing so I hope it makes sense. In Frontierland, look down at the main walkway (which is also the parade route). Instead of just plain cement there's also and area a couple feet wide that goes all the way down the walkway and looks like a brownish/yellow gravel. It seems in frontier times the streets had a urine trough in them for the all of the horse urine. The gravel area represents the urine trough. I'll never look at that area the same way again!

Also in the GMR... In the Egyptian-styled section, check out some of the wall tiles as fast as you can while the ride moves through. Most of them are normal hieroglyphs, but several have pictures of funny MGM and Disney stuff. For example, one of the tiles has R2-D2 and another has C-3PO from Star Wars. There are a couple hidden mickeys in there too.

Enjoy!

Definitely not hidden, but still a favorite of ours that many people quickly walk by....the tombstones at the exit side of HM. We love to stop and read them....just like we read the ones on the entrance side. Usually people are walking right past to get on to the next thing...but we like to read them all. There's even a pet cemetary.

Also, the girls love to look for the buried jewels around Aladdin's ride.

I like the Hidden Mickey in Buzz Lightyear. In the very last room where you are still able to shoot, look forward at the top left corner, there's a planet with Mickey on it. This same planet is also on the map of planets in the waiting area just as you enter. The planet is blue, if that helps you any.

Not sure if this qualifies but....

If you exit the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular theater from the far right-side stairway (as you face the stage) pay attention as you go onto the landings... look for the hand of a CM rising above the railing holding the golden idol from the show's Mayan (or South American in the movie version) temple. The idea is to pat the head of the idol as you go past. A big thrill for kids [and some others :-)] that love the first Indy film. One caveat: not sure if they do this for all shows....

Mickey Ears...

The Ring is sorta hard to spot, I always have to look around, but I will do my best to lead you to it... As you come out of the haunted mansion you will go through the caste Iron gates walk about 3-4 feet further (I think!!!) and you will see it in the ground, you can ask a CM usually they will show you and tell you one of the stories about how it got there!!! just keep your eyes open for it and don't worry about others exiting, they might wonder what your looking for and you'll get a good laugh out of it.
Oh yeah you can go to www.doombuggies.com they might have GPS Coordinates to it LOL... no they may have a better describtion of where to find it... Good Luck!!!

look at the chair in front of the endless hall with the "floating candlabra.

The engagement ring. to find it you will have to go past all of the tombs on the left. as you go through the big iron posts that "used" to house swinging gates look down on the pavement you will see where the "ring" is in the cement.

Don't forget to stop another 30 feet down the sidewalk and visit the pet cemetary. Most people just walk right on by.

And do you all know that now there is a tombstone with eyes on it that open for just an instant?

Geat directions of the "deed". Just make sure to look to your left as you go in. You really have to turn around and look "'back' almost.

I was wondering if anyone was going to mention the new tombstone that was put in just before you enter the doors of the HM. It is the stone of a person that makes an appearance a number of times inside. I can't remember the name but I think it is something like "Leola" maybe. Just can't remember. You have to watch the stone for awhile to get the effect but it opens it's eyes for the briefest of time and then goes back to appear like it is stone. The timing is absolutely great because the effect lasts such a short time that if someone sees it by chance, by the time they turn to tell others about it, it has gone. That leaves the observer trying to explain to a sceptical group, just what they saw. Good for a lot of laughs and very well done.

goofyer....that's hilarious! That was one of my "must-sees" this last trip and it was great. I think it's Madame Leota. Our oldest DS spotted it without me even prompting him and said, "Look Mom, that lady just opened her eyes." We, of course with everyone else around, turned to look and her eyes were closed. So many people just laughed and turned away....within just a few seconds another group of people started whispering, "Hey, that kid was right....she did just open her eyes." Then more and more people were trying to catch it just right....it was a great moment.

VERY CREEPY to see those green eyes staring at you!!!!! But I can't think about it anymore...DH is away and I'll end up pulling the kids into my bed if I get too scared!!!!!

Another interesting bit from the Keys to the Kingdom Tour- The hidden Mickey on the ballroom table (plates arranged in that familiar shape) is UNOFFICIAL, and every time the compliance people go through the ride, they put the plates back where they're supposed to be. Before long, though, the "ghosts" have rearranged it again.

Oh and here's something interesting. Did you know how much psycology goes into developing a park? Main Street is designed, through forced perspective, to look as if it's much longer than it is when you're heading towards the castle Actually it is not. This is one of those storiess told soooo much people believe it to be true. MS is the same width at both ends.

Pete W.
01-10-2003, 08:41 AM
I don't think they were referring to the width of the street. More likely they're referring to the fact that the dimensions of the buildings shrink as you go upwards and forwards. This makes them appear taller than they really are and makes Main Street appear longer than it really is. Notice how much smaller the windows on the upper floors of the buildings are.

Forced perspective on Main Street is described in the Official Guide to WDW so I don't think it's just a story.

Granny
01-10-2003, 09:08 AM
Cinderella's Castle itself also features forced perspective. Also, the castle was elevated at WDW because Walt had noted that he didn't think it was prominent enough at Disneyland.

At the Tusker House Restaurant in AK you can hear kitchen noises, if you sit in the outside dining area. It sounds like dishes clanging together, sweeping up broken glass, etc.. This is a recording, but it's funny to see how people react, when they first hear the sounds.

It's just amazing all the details in HM. How many people have not looked up in the stretch room and seen the man hanging from the ceiling with the noose around his neck? Since it took us 9 trips before we noticed that, that's one of my theme park secrets. The other one is at AK-the old ITTBAB entrance, which is now a long path that goes under a waterfall and winds around the base of the tree. Kind of hard to find (at least it was for me)-but it's so peaceful, I love it. The windows in Fantasyland-that's a new one, I'll definitely have to check that out next time we're there.

The talking tree at AK. Last week it "ran" up to my 10yo DD and talked to her about her cheetah mouse ears. "What big ears you have!" It suprised her and is quite funny.

The kids also like the hidden mickey's. An easy one to find is in IASW. (Yes you have to ride it to see it) There is a vine hanging from the ceiling that is shaped like Mickey instead of leaves.

:D Letyfrombrazil; That little bride is a leftover character from the original concept of HM, when Walt Disney wanted it to be a walk through ride. There is a long story that you were supposed to follow as you walked through the mansion. Quite a long story about a sea captain and his wife. The full size bride earlier in the ride was suppposed to be the same person.;) Also, regarding ice station cool, I don't beleive those are other types of coke, just other drinks made by coca cola in other countries.:)

:D The talking fountains are by the restrooms on the side of innoventions facing The Land. As you come through the center of the building walking towards The Land, make a quick left turn, they are right there. I've seen a talking trash can at AK. Take the train , get off and walk all the way down the path till you come to the first building, and depending if your timeing is right, the trash can usually roams around the entrance to the first building. There is also a talking tree at the entrance to AK . I don't know if there is a particular schedule for these things. I think you just have to luck out.;)

A talking trashcan is in Tomorrowland too! His name is Push. He comes out from Mickey's Star Traders every hour or so and roams for 20 minutes. I used to work in Star Traders and saw him all the time. :)

 Speaking of talking trees and trash cans, are there any engineers out there that know how these things work? I can never spot a camera on these things. I'm just wondering if the person running these things has to have a line of sight from somewhere nearby? It seems like the operator would have to be able to see all sides of the robotic item so that it doesn't run over anybody when it backs up.{ If my old english teacher Mrs. Shlicher saw this post , she would yell at me for using the word "thing " too many times.}:(

Isn't that at Disneyland, not MK? Pretty sure it is. Besides, the Snow White ride is to the right of the castle and the post said it was on the windows of the left. Anyone know for sure.

The Evil Queen is at Disneyland, to the left, but I'm pretty sure there is something also at MK - can anyone help?

I promise, I won't squeel. Papa & Mamaw, you said there were clues in my post. Does this mean that there is an operator some where close by that can see the robotic from all angles? And if so, are they higher up or at ground level? I'll buy a drink for the first one that tells me the secret next time your in wdw when we are. Our next trip is February 25th to March 2nd. This is such a great thread, I to am going to print this out for future reference.

I don't know if many people have seen this, but we were in AK on 11/30/02. We has just left the safari ride and were heading on the walkway towards Asia and approaching the walkway bridge when we noticed that a CM was dressed as a flower plant (and standing perfectly still on stilts) next to one of the pillars of the bridge. She blended perfectly in as if she were an ivy type plant growing up the pillar of the bridge. We sat there and watched her for about 5 minutes. As there were about 20 people heading towards the bridge, she began walking towards them on those stilts and you should've seen the faces of the people when she started walking towards them. Everyone stopped, 3 people screamed and small children either ran away or started crying. This CM was great. We were at this park later in the week but didn't see her so I don't know if she is only out occasionally or is put in different parts of the park. We did see the talking tree also at the frontgate of AK. The thing was dormant and someone in front of us thought it was a trashcan and put there soda can on top it. Well it came to life and began to follow the man in the park while telling him off. It was quite funny. I love AK.

I remember another thread on another board (quite some time ago) mentioning something about checking out crates/boxes that are by some of the rides and opening them as there are different things that happen or sounds going off. I either recall them saying this at MK or at MGM.

mitros
01-13-2003, 11:45 AM
:D Those talking / sound effects boxes are at MGM. When you get off the tram back stage tour ride, walk through the building with all the costumes in it and go straight through the area where you can have photos taken with the phony backdrops. They are on the left hand side near the steam roller from roger rabbit.;)

Here's ours...

1. Near the Speedway on the way into Tomorrow land there is a high streetlamp with three large round hooded lights -- it was designed to cast a hidden Mickey on the ground twice a day when the sun is in the right place.

2. In Liberty Square, there is a gate around a door -- it guards a marble slab that used to be thrshhold or a step or something like that at Monticello. Jefferson actually walked on it long ago.

3. There are no hills in Florida. If you see a hill, it was man made to hide something.

4. Notice the sounds as you walk from land to land in MK -- especially around the front of the castle. As you transition from land to land, there are barely noticable background noises that will change -- it's actual hidden speakers setting the mood.

There are no hills in Florida. If you see a hill, it was man made to hide something. You are way off. There are plenty of hills and several small "mountains" in Florida. Just because they build hills (actually earthen berm is the correct terminology) at WDW to conceal things does not mean that is how it is across the state.

I remember a talking trashcan, the first I have ever experienced in the foodcourt of Carribean Beach Resort, at least it was there in January of '97. It was located right out in front of that restuarant across from the main food court. It sounded electronic. I saw something similar to this about a year ago, here in Dallas, Texas in a Taco Bell, once.
I still have my WDW explorer on CD Rom and the second edition they came out with, before they discontinued them and there is a whole section on each ride in all four parks of hidden secrets. I will try to get on there tonight and pull off as many as I can find for yall. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about when I say WDW Explorer on CD-Rom? I first bought it back in 1996, but they don't sell them anymore, which is a shame because any disney fan should own one, they have the map of the whole disney world on it and you can go to each park, then within each park, each section, i.e., frontierland, and then from there each ride, like Thunder Mountain and it has photos along with music playing for each section you are in as you go along. It's absolutely a wonderful tool to feel like you are right there in the parks!

each and every time we are at the "world". First go to American Adventure in EPCOT and view the American Flag that was taken from the rubble of 9/11/2001. It will put a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye.

Next make it a point to be at Magic Kingdom at dusk for the flag lower ceremony. That will inspire some emotion as well, but you are at the happiest place in the work and you won't feel serious for long. ...just long enough

What a great thread - I just read and printed it all!

I don't think anyone mentioned my favorite (if you did, sorry!) - If you turn down the first side street to your right on Main Street on a more quiet day and look up at the windows that have signs that say something like "music lessons", you'll hear a voice practicing scales and someone tap dancing. You can't always hear it - it has to b pretty quiet.

Also, the hidden mickey in the mural on the Norway ride is hilarious!

We were there last week and the talking palm tree was outside the gates... he got behind three young ladies and said "college girls, hubba, hubba". He started to follow them and said "I'm not stalking you we're just going to same way... now I'm stalking you"

it's too funny.

A question on the old ITTBAB entrance path. I tried to find it... asked a CM who sent me to a little, bitty loop which was more like a Picture Spot. Question: Where is the entrance for the old trail which takes you around the roots of the tree?

thanks,

I heard that at the Columbia Harbor House on the second floor, the dining there is usually never crowded and you can have a great view of fantasyland and one of the other lands.
Also, did anyone know that there was a walking trail in Canada, with an old abandoned mine and waterfalls? I knew of the one on the way to see that movie, O'Canada, but supposedly there is another one, a real walking trail to show you the landscape of Canada.

Location of Ice Station Cool: if you are looking at an epcot map that you get at the park, it is located at one of the four innoventions. It is the innoventions across from the fountain on the right hand (west) side (going towards the countries). If you are looking at the map you can see a little white cave right above the restroom and just below a kodak picture spot. Hope you find it next time you go there. Try the lemon soda.

Has anyone seen the little critter in Splash mountain, in the cave - like room just before the last drop - come upside down out of the ceiling and say "Go FSU!" I've read that an imagineer that graduated from Florida State put it there, and it sure sounds like thats what he's saying, because I've seen it! This may or may not be still going on I'll find out when I go in Feb. Well I'll try to make this long story as short as possible. At Epcot by the entrance to the Body Wars ride there are little shops around and there is this little stage. My DH was on the ride while my girls and I were waiting so we looked around and then decided to just sit in the front row and maybe there would be a puppet show or something on this stage (sign said show in 5 min) It turned out it was not puppets at all. It was a comedy/juggling act. It was very funny and my DH came to join us shortly after it started. He got picked to go up on stage and they had him juggle plates while the song macho man played and the comedian told him to walk like a model. I can't explain all the jokes but needless to say I laughed so hard and still to this day after seeing the video at least 25 times I still cry of laughter. If this is still there it's worth seeing.:jester:

I am almost positive that that is NOT what the little guy is saying. I have seen him on a number of occasions, and on our last trip I could hear what he was saying. I can't remember what it is (but I'll find out for you in about 2 weeks :D ), but it DID make sense to the story line. It was some sort of warning about the drop coming up... either a warning or making fun of you for going the wrong way. Like I said, I can't remember, but I do remember hearing him and that it did make sense to the context of the ride. I'm sure this thread will still be going in a few weeks so I'll post it when I'm back.

No, Hayley is right!
I saw this on an Imagineering special, I think on Travel or something, where it was mentioned that some Imagineers put personal touches on rides and Splash Mountain was specifically mentioned, they even had the guy on who did it.
I kept my eyes and ears out for the critter after that. He does indeed say FSU, I've heard it distinctly every time!

Also, I would try Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble. Just type it in the search box on those websites.

The red sweet drink at Ice Station Cool was the watermelon one. It's my favorite. I'm not sure but I think it was from Mexico or Brazil. Yummy. Can't wait til October so I can have it again. - Nancy

Ok here is my Top Secret, when i went last year i too gathered all these secrets and must sees. But what to do with them. No way could i remember them all and i didn't want to carry around pages of stuff.

I organized the secrets hints into Parks and sub categories of lands etc. I then printed them on index cards. Put hole punch at the top corner and looped them thru a binder ring.

It was so convenient to pull out an organized 5x5 card and be able to see at a glance what to look out for. Organization is the key, put all the hints and secrets for main street on 1 card, all the adventureland on another. You just flip thru and they are right at your fingertips. The ring binder makes it wicked easy to just flip thru so quickly and it takes up such little space.

There you go my big secret!!! Hope it inspires you....

Oh no! Are we running out of secrets?? Well, here's one more. If you don't need to see Tinkerbell fly or see the front of the castle while watching the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom, go BEHIND the castle to see the fireworks. The view is fantastic and you don't have to fight crowds. In fact, we usually grab a seat at one of the outdoor restaurants and enjoy! Nice to sit down after a long day at the MK too. ;)

OK I’ll chime in… I have 11 pages of hints that I gleaned off of these boards. Here are a few…. Oh, please take these with a grain of salt, as I have not seen or done all of the following. And if there are repeats sorry! !

Children should sit on the outside of the table at character meals so the characters can easily interact with them.
Minnie’s Strawberry Fruit Bars have 80 claories, o of which are from fat.
Bring a disposable waterproof camera to take to the water parks and pools for cool pictures.
Innoventions West, at the IBM exhibit, you can email pictures of yourself.
Innoventions East the 10 second video clip you can email.
Look for the solar powered lawnmowers at EPCOT.
Being in Germany at the top of the hour.
Sitting in the butterfly garden in the UK.
Finding one of the 27 hidden Mickeys in the mural in the Animal Kingdom Conservation Station.
Squirting the people with the elephants at Kali River Rapids.
Listening to the bug show tunes in the Tree of Life.
Tug on the well rope at Indiana Jones.
Test Flights at Star Wars.
At Pleasure Island, the nonsensical historical plaques showing how they relate to Merriweather Pleasure, on all the buldings.
DTD’s giant kaleidoscope.
Sign at MK pointing to the “Ghastly Mansion”.
Mickey shaped manhole covers in Toontown.
Gus and Jacques in the throne room at Cinderella’s Royal Table.
Ladybug release at WL and Poly.

About the ladybug release program, according to wdwplanner.com:

This program takes place at the Polynesian Resort every Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. and also at 10:00 a.m. at the Wilderness Lodge. Each guest is given a matchbox containing some ladybugs. You then release the ladybugs onto the nearby plants. Ladybugs are attractive carnivorous insects that eat other "bad" insects. By using this process, Disney World has managed to reduce their chemical pest control by more than 70 percent. This is an educational experience for your child that could come in handy if your child is expected to hand in some educational papers for school concerning their trip. The ladybug release is free and open to anyone who wishes to participate.

OK, here's a bunch from a long time WDWer....

1) Getting a Dole Whip at Aloha Isle at MK. Yum!

2) Eating lunch at The Pinocchio Village Haus and looking out of the window that overlooks the loading/unloading area inside of It's A Small World

3) Standing on the monorail platform in the CR.

4) Eating dinner at Ohana, enjoying a perfect view of Cinderella Castle

5) Weather permitting, going to the campfire at FWC for singalongs and an outdoor movie.

6) Renting canoes at FWC

7) Exploring Injun Joe's caves on Tom Sawyer Island.

8) Enjoying a Bass Ale at The Rose and Crown Pub

9) Testing my marksmanship at the Frontierland Shooting Arcade (a ritual I have done EVERY trip to WDW since I was 6...I am now 37).

10) The queueing line at Space Mountain (the decor, not the wait!)

There are so many more....too many!

Has anyone mentioned being a "guest conductor" on the train in the Magic Kingdom? If you sit in the very last car, the one that is the little platform out the back they will ask you to be the guest conductor. Last time all three of my kids fit back there while we were up a few rows. They get to yell "All Aboard" into the microphone and announce the different lands. It's a trivial thing but my kids had so much fun we ended up going the whole loop because they didn't want to stop.

There is definitely a one legged duck, we have a close up picture of him.

One of the things we discovered last time was in China in Epcot. I believe it was China. It's in the store that is somewhat dakr. It's a bigger open store. Anyway, you can purchase a fan, and they will personalize it for free. They write the name in Chinese. The fan is very inexpensive, I thought. I think it was around four dollars.

When you go into the Indiana Jones room, don't look at Indy. Keep looking at the wall to your left.

Right before you leave the room, you'll see the Hidden Mickey and a Hidden Donald. They're in the last row of blocks before you exit that room, about halfway up the wall.

At the end of Kali River Rapids, you float by sculptures of elephants. Their trunks are raised. As you go under them you get sprayed with water. Just before the elephants, there is a bridge. There are two buttons on the bridge that control the water spray. When I last checked, a year ago, it was free.

More a tip than a secret, but I wanted to bump this!
Wait for the railroad in Toontown about 15 minutes before the evening parade is scheduled to begin. If you're lucky, you'll be pulling into the Main Street Station just as the parade begins, putting you on the best side of the street for a quick exit, or a good view of the parade if you're staying. Worked for us twice last Feb-- once to watch, and once to exit.

We just got back from WDW and we tried quite a few of these. We asked a CM about Andy's Pizza Planet room and he said they hadn't done it in over a year.

Boy the ring at the Haunted Mansion is so small you would have a hard time finding that. We asked a CM about that one also.

firstmickey
02-04-2003, 10:14 PM
1. madam's ring at HM. Very tiny. Had to ask CM to show it to us. She also told us to look for hidden mickey on dining room table, in the library, and on the right hand corner of the spirit.

2. Madame Leota's tomb just before entering doors of mansion.
3. Tinkerbell in her shop at Fantasy land.
4. Change in sidewalk and background noises as you move land to land
5. The critter who comes out of ceiling on splash mtn and says go FSU

6. the marker in Epcot that marks the middle of the world
7. A net full of Jello at muppets
8. pulled on rope at Indy Jones (should have seen the looks I got for pulling it when it had a sign that said not to)
9. had fun opening crates and boxes after back stage tour
10. And my personal favorite, the singing in the rain umbrella.

Now to share one that I found, the rocks in the water on the way to safari ride in AK as you go over the bridge, look like animals. Saw one shaped like an elephant and one like an alligator.
Really had fun tracking these down. Thanks for all the tips.
Wish I could have found the HM in the mural at Norway and the hieroglyphics on the GMR but I couldn't see them. (NEXT TIME!!)

the boat ride from DTD to OKW - go to Olivia's for lunch

all the lobby details at the TOT ride. I almost regret when the line is short.

the line for Bug's Life, take the time and look at all the carvings in the tree roots, and read the posters for the movies.

the barber shop on Main Street

the flag from the World Trade Center at the American pavillion at Epcot

penny presses

the midnight show at the Adventurer's Club at Pleasure Island

the shortest line to see Mickey - in AK by the Legend of the Line King

i could keep going , lol

There is a shop on mainstreet that will do a sillouette cut out(black paper pasted on a white card) of a child's profile. I did this on our trip in Dec 2000. It only took a few minutes, and was about $5-$7. The only thing is that they didn't take credit cards, you could only pay cash or charge it to the room.

Finding all the hidden Mickeys at WL is a lot of fun.

This isn't exactly a secret, but it kept my 6yo and 3yo so amused that I thought I'd mention it.

If you go across the street from the Muppetvision show at MGM (away from Indy Jones and sort of toward the Shrunk playground), there is a fire hydrant that sprays water at unpredictable intervals. We went last July and my kids couldn't be torn away from there.

If someone has a better set of directions, that would be appreciated, since my memory is a bit foggy.

A talking tree at AK, similar to the trash cans at MK. I had my bridal minnie headband and it sang "Here comes the bride" and teased DH about paying attention to the different types of strollers for when we have a kid. Very funny.

The very last tombstone before you enter the Haunted Mansion moves. Her name is Leota and she opens her eyes suddenly, looks around, then closes them.

The umbrella at MGM was working when we were there (2/9), and we noticed the "voice lessons" on Main Street. So many little things that just add so much to your vacation, it's amazing!

Just wanted to share that I arranged most of the tips by location into a Word document. I realized that printing them out could take a lot of paper, ink, and time, so now it's organized, and, better yet, it's only a few pages long.

I dont know if this has been mentioned but the Tower of Terror at MGM is 199 feet tall. It was supposed to be 200 feet but for a structure 200 feet tall you need lights at the top for airplanes to see. So it is 199 feet tall to keep the spooky feeling.

I love this thread! We leave in 11 days! Will be there for my son's 5th birthday. Any tips and secrets for a birthday boy trip?

ivanova
02-25-2003, 05:43 PM
free: get a birthday button at Guest Relations, your son can wear it for the duration of the trip. At the very least he'll receive birthday wishes from Cast Members throughout the day. Sometimes he'll get little "benefits" (my daughter got a free water bottle one day at a vending cart).

expensive, but worth every dime: Illuminations Birthday cruise. You usually have to reserve these 90 days in advance, but there are cancellations so you can call and see if you can get a last minute ressie. Or post here on the boards, under the Illuminations thread, and see if anyone that already has a ressie has room for extra passengers. We did our daughter's 12th birthday this way, and took on 6 extra passengers (the boat seats up to 12 people) and split the cost of the cruise with them.

If you are staying on property, I think you can also arrange with the hotel to have goodies waiting for your son in your room either when you check-in, or on the day of his birthday if it's in the middle of the trip. It doesn't hurt to call and ask!!

BTW, we'll be there 3/9 - 3/15. Only 12 days to go (not like I'm counting or anything :p )

kbjjmamma,
We were there for my son's 5 th birthday too it was wonderful!!!We got him the birthday button at City hall and all day long people and cast members wished him a happy birthday. During the parade just about all of the characters mouthed happy birthday while passing by...he was also asked to join in and participate in the festivities...it was a day he'll never forget. He was also allowed to ride some rides over and over...without waiting...he thought that was cool... One cast member brought him to the front row of a show and gave him a stuffed mickey for his birthday....Just about all the characters that signed his autograph book wrote Happy Birthday in it. If you have the oportunity to eat at Chef Mickeys they do a special dance for the birthday boys and girls to join in!! Hope this helps.... THere are so many things that will happen ...it will be magical for sure!!!

I didn't see an answer to this so I'm posting what I've seen about the talking trash can in Tommorrowland.

We saw it twice in one day - once by the Lunching Pad. The trash can was talking to my kids - they thought it was hilarious.

Later in the day we saw it again - this time on the bridge toward the castle. The operator of the trash can actually remembered my kids - they are twins and he said "oh no - it's the birthday twins again" (they were wearing the birthday buttons). So I was looking around and I saw this guy leaning up against the bridge railing. He was talking into a small microphone and laughing. It was him because I was reading his lips. I'm not sure if he was also operating the trash - it's movements - but he was definitely the voice.

Images of Mickey Mouse have been hidden throughout the attraction by mischievous Imagineers. During the entire show, for example, the little girl is holding a Mickey mouse doll. Also, look for the famous silhouette of three circles along the balcony railing just before you enter the building and as a water stain on the wall in the boiler room. Although probably not intentional, the bell for the elevator above Rod Serling's head in the Library film also bears a resemblance to those famous mouse ears. A reference to Mickey can also be seen in the sheet music in the Library which is a copy of actual music written in the 1930s.

The child actress in the libraryis holding a doll that is one of the first Mickey Mouse dolls ever made, and it is the only Hidden Mickey that the design team has confirmed.

The luggage in the lobby is a complete set made from genuine alligator skin. While looking through a 1930s furniture catalog, Imagineers decided to call the company to see if they were still in business. They were, and Walt Disney Imagineering had them reproduce two settees for the lobby.
It is said that Imagineers had mahjongg players set up the game in the lobby so guests who know how to play the game can see that it is authentic.
The top speed for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is said to be about 39mph.
When you board the elevator, on the left side, outside of the elevator itself, is an inspection certificate that's dated Oct. 31, 1939, and signed by "Cadwallader". Cadwallader was a character in the sixth Twilight Zone episode "Escape Clause" who actually turned out to be the Devil himself. the inspection certificate number is 10259, which is cool because The Twilight Zone's first episode ("Where Is Everybody") premiered on Oct. 2, 1959.

Is that enough cool secrets about a ride I would NEVER AGAIN ride?

OK then one more tidbit. In the Fifth Dimension scene on the Foxtrot side, the swirling stars form a Hidden Mickey just before they disappear

It's actually on one of the walls that face the tower balconies... if I remember correctly. My mom had a room in Nov that was on the MK facing side of the tower and from the hallway outside the room you could see the goat. Does that make any sense??

OK, I just got back 30 minutes ago from my now recent trip to Disney, sigh!!!
I met up with a CM friend who gave me a tidbit on this one, along with others I will eventually post as I write up my trip report:
In Pirates of the Caribbean, there is a ghost by the name of George. He was an Imagineer who died during the building of the ride, supposedly IN the building. Anyway, she swears that if the workers do not say goodbye to George every night as the last thing they do before closing the attraction, there are technical difficulties the next morning...YIKES!
Also, notice the street lights when loading for Splash Mountain. One blinks when the boats are ready to go in motion.

1. In the AK if you stand facing Tusker house and listen you can hear the landlady banging on the door in the room upstairs trying to get in.
2. In the loading area of Kali River Ride look for the real Geicko in one of the cabinets in the waiting quenue.

3. In Epcot at Sea Base Alfa, look at the beams inside. You will see a bunch of letters and number. On one of the tours we had taken it was explained that the people who worked on building that building wanted to leave something so the letters and numbers mean something special to each one who worked on the building.

4. When you leave that building notice that the overhang coming out is very large. That is to give you eyes time to get re-adusted to the sunlight.

5. At the Ak lodge there is so much to do and find out. We stayed there last year and the kids had such fun they did not want to leave and go to a park. Finding the hidden mickeys there, looking at the animals at night with night glasses, the story telling, I could go on.

Look for the Indian on Main Street.

No no one has mentioned this on. The Sword in the Stone at the Carousel. Our kids love it.

When you go to Minnie's house make sure you turn all of the knobs in the kitchen. Hear the popcorn pop, etc

DS-12 discovered this on our recent Chrismas trip. MGM-On the Star Tours bldg, on the exit side. Come out of store, make a left, look up at the building. "M" draped flags are there (posts protruding from the building with material draped over them, creating "M". -Does this make sense?). Can't believe we never noticed this before!

I was at Borders today and found a great new book entitled, "Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide to Walt Disney World's Best Kept Secrets" It's by Steven Barrett.
It's a scavenger hunt to find hidden Mickey's. I was just thumbing through the book--it's a lot a fun. I'll have it with us the whole time we are there in June.

Here are a bunch on AK I got from an email from All Ears:

If you walk up the path to the left, toward Harambe, you'll pass by the counter service restaurant, Pizzafari, one of the most brilliantly decorated buildings in the Animal Kingdom. The bright colors are eye-catching, of course, but stop in *before* the lunch crowds gather so that you can study the different rooms with their ornate murals, walls and ceilings. Can you identify which room is which? The Home Room, Nocturnal Room, Upside-Down Room, Camouflage Room, Four Seasons Room, and Bug Room.

Stop and look down at the walkway under your feet. Did you know, for example, that the leaf prints and mud cracks were made by a mold? The Imagineers actually took a large patch of mud, made a cast of it, then reproduced it for the walkways of Disney's "Africa." They even distressed and widened the naturally occurring cracks by squirting them with a hard stream of water from a hose.

In Harambe you might spy a genuine Coke bottle perched atop a utility pole as an insulator for a power line.

Across from the Dawa Bar is what appears to be an old fort. Don't assume, as I did, that the area's off limits -- there are actually tables and chairs in there!

The mythical land of Anandapur in Asia - note the authentic prayer trees, draped with both faded and new scarves that commemorate dead loved ones.

Kali River Rapids queque- don't miss Mr. Panika's office -- the owner of the "business" may be "out to temple" as the signs indicate, but the two resident geckos who reside in his gecko cabinet are in all the time. Children will enjoy spotting the little critters, which are very much alive!

Kids certainly won't want to overlook the Dinoland Boneyard -- the play area is specially made for them to blow off some steam. If they look off to the right, behind the jeep, they'll see a row of fossils set into the wall. Just hit one and find out what happens -- it's musical! If you can't find the so-called "xylobone," a Cast Member will point it out to you.

This is true! I have a few friends that work there, and they do say goodnight to him everynight. Supposedly, George was a maintenance guy that got electricuted in the water. If you call out his name 3 times in the scene with the fires, "something" will happen. I know it sounds crazy, but we tried this once, and out of NOWHERE, the boat that had been behind us (at LEAST 40-50 feet, it was a slow night, and not many boats were running) SLAMMED into the back of us. It was empty, so we couldn't ask anyone what happened. Freakin creepy.

I don't know if this has been posted yet...but there's also a "real" ghost in TOT. Bob the bellhop had a heart attack loading Delta. Now, weird things happen..especially in the Foxtrot library (although it used to happen a lot more often).

I haven't been able to read ALL the posts here, but I have enjoyed what I have read so far!

DH and I found the hidden trail in AK on accident during our trip March 2001 (back when we were just dating) . I had heard where it was but wasn't really looking for it. Then we were just taking a stroll by when I found the little stepping stone path, it crosses a little stream.

I heard on this board that it has been closed off. Anyone know if this is true? I'd like to know. We are going this May, it will be DD's first time!!! but we will only be going to MK and Epcot. Can't wait!

Yes it is closed. The last two trips we made to WDW it was not there. They have either planted or let the plants grow over the entrance. If you never knew it was there, you would never guess you use to be able to walk back there. On one of our trips, I was taking the kids back there to show it to them. In front of us was a couple, but they did not stay on the path and were walking all over the area and the last I saw them they were walking down the berm that Disney has around the area. I think this could have been one of the problems with this.

Talking about the Ak.If you go to conservation station there is so much for you and the children to see and touch. If you get there early enough in the morning, you might be able to see an operation on one of the animals. During the day inside conservation station, they put on little hands on shows with animals that is great for children of all ages. Also there are tables set up with items about the animals and always someone there to tell you are the articles on the tables. Outside is the petting area. they do not let you feed the animals, but have grooming brushes that you can brush the animals. It is great because the animals do not start eating you clothes or knocking the little one's down to get to food. Next to that there is a small stage. also, during the day they put on cute little shows. They are trying to train animals to do certain things. The best part of this is that they are not the usuall animals. You get to talk with the trainers and it is a great little show. Also, on the walk from the train to conservation station there is a garden on the right hand side for kids. They are given cards and have to find the bugs in the garden. Needless to say the bugs are not real. OUr kids have done it at least three times and enjoy it each and very time.

I will tell you the first time we went to conservation station we did not like it. We did what most people do, just walked through and did not stop to really look. Like most of the Ak you have to slow down and look. MOst of the good stuff is things to do and they are not jumping out in front of you, like big attractions do.

I might have to add my two cents to this thread...first let me say that this is the best thread!! My FH has never been to Disney world, so when we go for his first trip in Oct. we're going to have to hunt some of these 'secrets' down!!

My best secret isn't really a secret, I'm sure, but it's definitely one of my favorite things to do...after a loooong day at the parks, it is so relaxing to go back to the hotel and have a swim in one of the pools...it's not so crowded, (but sometimes still hot) and it is just so relaxing to me!

This is not a hidden secret just a little info.

In MGM there is a hidden attractiion, it is Gertie the Dinosaur. She is a tribute to the vaudeville actor and artist Windsor Mackay. About 1912 he decided to spice up his act with a cartoon of a railroad, projected on the screen, and he would interact with it. The audienes thought that this was trick photography. He then decided to come up with Dinosaur Gertie. This was before the concept of the multiplane camera or even cells. He made about 14,400 drawings on rice paper. Each one not only had Gertie drawn on it, but also had the background screnery (Silent movies had 16 frames per second and this ran anbout 15 minutes or 900 seconds). He started this act in 1915, the audiences recognized at this point that Gertie was a cartoon and could not be trick photgraphy. This was the first recognized projected cartoon. Many years later, Walt Disney met Windsor's son. The son was very happy to met Walt, but Walt was even happier to meet him. Walt told the son that "I owe everything I have done to the idea started by your father". There is a small sign near Gertie in the park, but it does not go into this detail.

The gravestone of Madame Leota that moves (lifts its face...glances around...) at the entrance to HM has been mentioned a few times, but do you know why that tombstone just appeared within the last year or so?

Madame Leota, the creepy woman in the crystal ball in the seance room of the Haunted Mansion, was played by Leota Thomas (a former Disney Imagineer, actually) and voiced by Eleanor Audley (also the voice of Malificent and Lady Tremaine) - thanks to www.doombuggies.com for this info.

Anyway, I remember reading that the real Leota Thomas actually died fairy recently, and that's when Disney decided to erect that tomb w/the moving face on it. I might have read this in the Disney Magazine or something -- can anyone corroborate?

That truly adds some creepiness about it...we all know that "Dear Old Fred" that had "a big ol rock [fall] on his head" never lived OR died...but Leota really did.

Just something to ponder next time you visit the 999 happy haunts....

I guess we'll never run out of Disney secrets. . .

-- The telegraph you hear at the train station? It's tapping out Walt Disney's speech at Disneyland's opening in Morse Code.

Another thing, the many celebrity voices. From Tim Curry as S.I.R. in Alien Encounter to Pee Wee Herman in Star Tours.

And, while he's not widely known for much more than being the voice of Tony the Tiger check out the official Disney section of this Thurl Ravenscroft fan site (http://members.aol.com/allthurl/attractions.htm) to get in on all of the voices that you know and love on Disney attractions that Thurl provided like the drunken priate, the singing dog and one of the minstrels in Pirates, Fritz in the Tiki Birds, Buff the buffalo head in Country Bear Jamboree and you can hear -- and SEE -- Thurl as busted bust singing Grim Grinning Ghosts in The Haunted Mansion.

If you guys think these secrets are interesting, you should really consider taking one of the behind the scenes tours (must be at least 16 years old). On our last trip, DH and I did Keys to the Kingdom, Hidden Treasures of the World Showcase, and Undiscovered Future World, and they were all fabulous. Here are a few of our favorite secrets:
In Liberty Square in MK, all of the shutters are hung slightly at an angle. This is because during the revolutionary war, England stopped shipping the US almost everything made of metal because the colonials would melt them down for bullets. One thing they did continue to ship was shutters. The colonials would take the metal hinges off the shutters to melt down for bullets, and would hang the shutters with leather straps. Over time, the leather would stretch out, causing the shutters to hang at an angle. Pretty awesome!
The waterfall by O Canada! in Epcot was put there because the sound of the water masks the fact that there is a huge generator directly behind it. I don't know of any other theme park that goes to such great lengths to make sure the magic is unspoiled for their guests.
Finally, forced perspective is used on some of the buildings around the World Showcase in Epcot to make them look bigger/smaller than they actually are. For example, there is a building in Canada that is only 3 stories high, but has 5 rows of windows to make it look taller. The building that the American Adventure is in is really 5 stories, but has tall doors and windows to make it look like it is only 3 stories. It's hard to tell, but have one person go stand by the door to the gift shop, and you'll be able to tell that the opening is about 12 feet high!
