View Full Version : Room request for AKL standard room

I have officially switched to the AKL. All I can afford is a standard room. I can find a lot of info on where to stay for a Savannah room, but is there an area to request for a standard room. I realize that I will not have a view, but will I still get a balcony? The guide says "most" rooms have balconies. Does that mean "all but the standard rooms". Is there a floor or side that would be closer to pool, refillable drinks, etc? Would standard rooms still be able to get bunk beds?
Thanks for any help.

Some of the standard rooms on the ground floor only have a concrete wall rather than a patio or balcony. I would request a higher floor so you don't get one of those. :D

The standard rooms at the AKL overlook the parking lot to the
left of the main entrance and the bus stop to the right of the entrance(as you are entering the hotel). I believe they are all in
the front of the hotel.

We were there last October with standard view and put in our request 'best view possible' and were upgraded to pool view at check-in (without us asking even). We checked in mid-week and it was fairly slow so I wouldn't count on it, but at least if you put that comment in your reservation, maybe you will get somebody who will put you in the best view possible for standard. Probably wouldn't hurt. I think most of the standard rooms do look out over the parking lot. Most of the rooms that I saw when going to the parking lot had balconies. You could always request a balcony also - again, it wouldn't hurt...

Good luck!

Thanks for the input! I just called CRO to add a request for a higher floor. The CM did not seem to know much about AKL. She said I didn't need to request a higher floor because none of the standards were on the first floor. I asked her to include it anyway. :Pinkbounc :smooth:

We were in a 5th floor standard room last October (Columbus Day weekend; the resort was completely full, so no "view" rooms were available). It had what I would call a "partial" balcony-- you could step out of the room onto it, but it wasn't large enough to sit out on, and it ended in a concrete wall about three feet high. Above the wall was what looked a "window" in the resort roof. It looked out over the parking lot, and didn't let much natural light into the room. But we had a great time anyway... so have fun and enjoy your trip in whatever room you get!

Ask to be near the lobby or elevators. That will keep you close to the pool/food areas. There were only 2 rooms at the AKL where I would refuse to stay in. Those were the 2 rooms that EVERYONE must pass to on the way to the bus stop. Passers by could look right over your balcony and see into your room. Those rooms were occupied when I was there last summer. They had a balcony with a concrete wall, but I'm sure the occupants did not use it. The odds of getting those would be pretty slim, but you never know. Have fun. It's a great resort.:D

I'm starting to get nervous about the standard room at AKL. DH doesn't want me to spend more $ for an assured better view. Am I better off switching to a moderate like POFQ? We love CBR but wanted to try a deluxe and are very excited about seeing the animals daily at AKL.:Pinkbounc

We booked standard for Labor Day Weekend and I faxed them asking to be as close as possible to the pool and food court, since we would be spending most of our time at the resort. I also mentioned my b-day. Also add that you undersand that there are no guarantees (so you don't sound pushy). The resort was full, according to the CM's, but we received an upgrade to deluxe pool view. I would suggest a friendly fax five days before and prepare to stay in a standard room-if you get an upgrade, it will be a nice surprise!

We were there Halloween week which wasn't a real busy time. I had a standard room booked through Dreams Unlimited. I had been reading some trip reports & such and knew the "block of rooms" that I would prefer....savanna view, but on the Sunset Savanna, not the ever popular Arusha Savanna. I got bold and emailed my DU agent to request this block of rooms. I figured, what the heck, all they could do is not honor my request. No biggie. We got a room in the block I requested.

It never hurts to request. You may not get what you request, but you absolutely won't if you don't request at all. The resort was so wonderful that I would've been happy anywhere they put us, but that savanna room was awsome.;)

I just called AKL and spoke to the front desk. The CM was very helpful and recommended I call 48 hours before check-in and advise them of any special requests. They will try to honor them depending on availability.:Pinkbounc

I will post after our vacation and advise how this works out.

Unfortunately, we won't be arriving til close to midnight at the beginning of spring breaks (March 8). So my chances of getting a better choice of standard room are slim. Hey, I still will be happy. I really don't want the room that EVERY body walks by and looks in though!

I booked Standard view room...was upgraded to Pool View and I did not ask! It was a great room...close to the lobby and shop. The food court is down 2 floors in an elevator (or stairs) and outside...not far at all. I loved our room and location was perfect!

We had room 3024 which was down the first hallway on the right as you enter the lobby...same floor...I want to say Giraffe Way...but not sure, cannot find map right now in all my mess!!It was a Queen bed/Bunk bed room. Great for my 2 DD's...no fighting over the covers!:D
