Welcome to my trip report and thanks for dropping by!

The first part of this TR includes some of my live reports and pictures that I posted during our trip from January 25th-29th, 2013.
If you would like to skip ahead, you can follow the links on my table of contents below. If you would like to browse through the live report portion, they are posts #19 through #100.

If you haven't been following my previous TRs, welcome and hope you stay for a bit! Here's the Pre-Trip Report (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3013311) for this trip. I also have links to TRs for the last two trips to WDW and Disneyland in my signature For my returning DIS friends, welcome back and thanks for sticking around!

The cast of characters for this trip were myself, DW, DD6, DS3, and DFIL. It was a more abbreviated trip compared to our last one in April. Honestly, I don't think we could ever top that trip in terms of all the things we got to experience including staying at the Poly. But we had another magical trip and I can't wait to start sharing the details with you!

How do you post pics from your iPhone?

You'll need to download two apps for your iPhone. One for DISboards, and one for Photobucket (at least that's the photo site I usually use when I post on DIS).

I can upload pictures to my Photobucket account/album from my phone using the Photobucket app. Once the pictures are uploaded and visible in my album, using the app I can copy the direct link to the picture.

Then I open the DIS app, find my thread, and post the picture (there's an image button from one of the dropdown menus) by pasting the copied link.

Hope that helps!

Thanks I was trying to the other day but the reviews for photo bucket said the last update messed up the app so I didn't try. I will try it out.

Hmmm, I don't think I updated the app in a long time for photobucket, so maybe that's why it's been working better?

I'm along for the ride - but I leave on Saturday so we'll be down there the same time! Taking the Auto Train and arriving on Sunday! Weather looks fabulous - especially after the cold this week! I'm in NoVA as well!

Just my daughter and I - she's my normal traveling companion - 23 and working so this is her first vacation on about 15 months - she's very ready - I keep telling her welcome to the real world!

Hi there! We are also going Jan 25-30...also because of the break we noticed on the school calendar...we booked in July. I saw that you changed flights to tonight...we are still set to fly out of BWI at 2:40 tomorrow....really stressed about it. And we were going to fly out at 11-ish but my girls (in 8th grade) had some tests going on this week, so we bumped our flight to 2:40 last week so they could go to school tomorrow (at a cost of $450 :crazy2:). Well, safe travels and happy trip. I look forward to reading your TR (and the TR of another Dis'er from around my neck of the woods who is also going for the long weekend...Kittylady1972). My PTR will lead into my TR and is on the DVC TR page...we will be at BCV for the very 1st time. So, here's to us...off to better weather...may we all get there safely and w/out delay :thumbsup2

Hi! Hope you have a fun trip as well! I think your flight will be okay. Was just listening to news radio and they are predicting the snow will start sometime between 2-3pm. Hopefully, your travels will go smoothly! I'll start checking out your PTR on the flight. I think we have wifi on the plane too! :goodvibes

We were just at DHS this morning too! And we did TSM, morning standby then fastpass. We are just about to head to Epcot now. We want to do the new Test Track, but we'll see how long the wait is. I will be taking pictures of Illuminations on the balcony of Tokyo Dining. Maybe we'll see you guys! I'll be the guy with a tripod, camera and back pack. Gray Mickey shirt with black sleeves.

We went in January a few years ago and it was way less crowded than this trip. We thought it was better than spring break, 4th of July and Xmas...but it was still a bit too crowded for us. We have done 2 September trips that were perfect and the prior January trip as well. Maybe those kind of low crowd times are a thing of the past.

I agree with you that the crowd levels were definitely higher than previous January crowds. It's definitely less than peak times. But it was pretty comparable to our last trip when we went in April about a week after Easter. That was surprising to me.

Not sure if this is just a blip for this year with New Fantasyland drawing in heavier crowds. My guess is that this is part of an increasing trend. We're thinking about going again next year during the last week of January when DD once again has a couple of student holidays - so we shall see.

(Just a little warning - these first couple of posts have very little pictures to go with them. Traveling solo with two young children doesn't yield many opportunities to take pictures especially if one of those kids likes to run off in random directions whenever he gets excited. ;) But I promise, if you hang in there with me, the pictures will start pouring in!)

Oh, where to begin. Normally I would start my TR with our departure day, but I think for this particular trip it wouldn’t do justice if I didn’t start telling what happened during the 3 days preceding the trip. Right around Inauguration/MLK day, the weather forecasters began talking about a potential “winter storm” for our DC area. Of course, my heart skipped a few beats when I first read about it but told myself not to worry too much since they get these things wrong all the time for forecasts that far in advance. Still, I kept checking back at the weather blog site for the Washington Post looking for updates every chance I got. Each time I did, the forecast kept swerving towards unfavorable weather for our planned departure time on Friday evening.

By Tuesday afternoon, I was a giant ball of anxiety. I could just picture our flight being cancelled and our already short trip becoming even shorter. I looked up how long of a drive it would be to Disney but that did no good since we would still have to drive through the winter weather. I tried looking at alternative airports to fly out of within a two hour drive range but all of those airports would be impacted by the same weather system. The only option I could think of to avoid the whole mess was to leave on Thursday evening. I asked one of my colleagues at the hospital if she could cover for me for Friday and we agreed to swap our work days so that I didn’t have to be at the hospital on Friday. I emailed DD’s first grade teacher about her missing school on Friday and she told us that it was no problem. She made DD do the Friday’s class work ahead of time on Wednesday and she was set.

The problem was DW’s work schedule. She couldn’t get out of her morning work hours that she was scheduled for that Friday. So I was prepared to give up on the plan. DW then said that I should go with the kids on Thursday night, and that she would fly into MCO on Friday night as previously planned. I didn’t feel so good about that plan especially since there was a chance that DW could be left behind for a chunk of our Disney vacation if the flight got cancelled. DW’s answer: “I’m perfectly okay if that happens. Besides, it’ll still be much better than having to watch you get all cranky and filled with angst if the flight does get cancelled and we’re ALL stuck here”. Hmmm, couldn’t argue with that. So, I made the flight change for the three of us. DW would still fly in on Friday night. DFIL would still fly in from Ohio on Friday night as well. So there you have it. After all that, I gained a whole full day at Disney. As soon as the flight plans were set, I found an ADR for Akershus lunch for Friday. We were set.

Departure Day – Thursday 24th

Bags were packed the night before. I finished work around 1pm. When I got home DW had already picked up both kids. She drove us to the airport and saw us off at the security gates. DS started fussing about missing his mom which I tried my best to remind him that we will see her the next evening. We got on our flight with no problems. Both kids fell asleep and slept through the majority of the flight. Before she fell asleep, DD struck up a conversation with a 4 year old girl sitting in front of her and her mom sitting across from her on the aisle. They were trading stories about which hotel they were going to stay in Disney. The family was coming from Canada and this was their second leg of their flights.

Ok, let me go back and correct myself about the flight. It was pretty smooth for the most part. Except there was this tour group. :worried: The tour guide didn’t have a flag or anything. I mean, that would just look ridiculous in an airport. :lmao:

As best as I could tell, the group was mostly made up of folks in their 30-50s. When it became boarding time, and as some of the members of this group began shoving their way to the front of the line when the gate attendant was calling for just “Zone 1”, things got a little frustrating. Three of their members were holding tickets to be seated in the emergency aisle. And none of them spoke or understood English so clearly does not meet the requirements to sit in those seats to start off with. Then the tour group leader who does speak English became defensive and began shouting at the attendant. Not a pleasant way to start the flight. Even when everyone was onboard, they were holding up the plane from taxiing back because they wouldn’t get in their seats. They were constantly playing musical seats trying to find their best buddy to seat with as the group was scattered throughout the airplane. So every time someone decided to change their mind on where to sit, the aisle person had to get up and let them in and out. Of course there was the obligatory trying to shove an oversized bag in to geometrically impossible spaces in the overhead bins.

We finally took off and I thought that was the end of that drama. The cabin lights were turned off so people could sleep. 10 minutes into the flight I see a series of camera flashes blinding me and the entire back portion of the cabin!! This one guy was trying to take pictures through his window. Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop. I don’t even know how the flashes help when you’re trying to take a picture out the window. I may be a beginner in photography, but I’m pretty sure the flash actually just gets in the way. Didn’t matter. Pop Pop Pop. I just had to chuckle at that point. The whole airplane ride felt like a bad experience on PotC with a tour group. Fortunately, the flashes eventually stopped. And it turned out that the rest of the trip was relatively free of any other run-ins with a tour group.

Eventually I got a little nap in as well. And before I knew it, we were on the ground on Orlando and riding the not-so-Disney monorail to the main terminal.

(I like to consider the MCO monorail as a practice run.)

Herded the kids through baggage claim and onto our minivan we picked up from Dollar. We were off. Windows down. Enjoying the temp in the 60s. We arrived at our one-night hotel at the Wyndham Lake Buena Vista at Downtown Disney. As we passed through one of those Disney World arches over the roadways, I announced to the kids that we were finally here at Disney. DD then asked me if Disney World was the capital of Florida! I told her no but it very well should be! ;)

While checking in at the front desk, I saw in the corner in my eye what appeared to be a platypus attempting to fly up from the first floor to the second floor. I turned to get a better look, and sure enough, Agent P was going up and down as two young girls were playing catch – one from the second floor balcony and one from the first floor. It was a funny sight. Since this extra night was unplanned I had to book this hotel last minute. The hotel was decent enough although I didn’t have enough time to spend in it to formulate a strong opinion one way or the other. I was starving so after the kids turned in for the night, I order room service and browsed on my ipad before falling asleep.

Next up: Our first day at Disney World with a LOT of park hopping.

DW really was really cool about us leaving a day early. I was more concerned than she was about the possibility that her flight could get cancelled but she was more confident that it would just be a delay.

We've had some good experiences with tour groups in the past at the parks where a couple of the members would do something randomly nice for the kids. But, you're right in that those nice encounters are far outweighed by the not so good ones. For the past couple of trips, we just turned in the opposite directions from them and modified our touring plans whenever we had to.

As annoying as any tour groups are, I can see how teenagers in a group would behave that way (seat swapping, etc.) but grown adults? :confused3 I guess it goes to show it must be a cultural thing. I'm glad the rest of your flight went well, and that you got a bonus day on your trip! Too bad DW couldn't get out of work to join you though. I hope she didn't end up stuck at home! We don't generally have to worry about winter weather messing up flights, but I sure got a taste of that anxiety when our flights were getting cancelled from California because of a hurricane!

Fortunately, the flight was only 1 hour and 55 minutes. And we slept through most of it! :goodvibes

We've had a relatively snowless winter up until that point, so I was unhappy that mother nature was planning something that day of all the days she had to pick in the entire month of January. :lmao:

Friday, January 25th - 5:30am

I woke up really early in the morning and had trouble falling back asleep. Too excited for sure. The kids were up before 6am as well. I promise, I didn’t wake them up. :goodvibes They were just as excited to get their Disney experience started. We went downstairs to their café and got a couple of pastries and yogurts for the kids. Had a difficult time getting the kids to eat anything partially due to the location of our table which had an unobstructed view of a tv tuned into the Disney channel. Our kids don’t watch that much TV at home. It’s not that we don’t let them. Trust me, I’ve been trying to introduce them to Doc Mcstuffins and Jake and the Neverland Pirates. They just don’t seem all that interested in watching them at home. So imagine my surprise when as soon as DD saw what was on the TV, she became a TV-Zombie. I would wave a muffin in front of her or ask her to ear her yogurt and all I would get in response was a “Huh?” without even eye contact. :lmao: I had my mandatory bottle of morning Coke Zero.

We checked out and loaded up the car at 7am and headed to our resort, Art of Animation! A friendly CM manning the gates greeted us and gave us directions to the parking lot. The first CM interaction I usually have with each trip is with the CM at the resort gates and they always are a great reminder of what I have to look forward to. Friendly services no matter what the request.

I parked the minivan and took the kids into the lobby to check in. The lobby was absolutely gorgeous – in a neon Vegas kind a way. Loved all of the hand drawings of the Disney characters on the other side of the wall. And so much space.

I think this is what a Disney Vegas would look like. ;)

The kids were enjoying exploring all of this while I received our packet including our Keys to the World. Our room wasn’t ready which wasn’t surprising. The front desk CM told us that I should get a text when the room is ready. We had a little more time to kill before heading to DHS so decided to check out the Ink and Paint Shop. It took all but two minutes for DD to lock in her gaze on a pencil case with all kinds of small compartments. I told her we can get that later but for now, we should head to Hollywood Studios. This is the point of the trip when I introduced the concept of one souvenir a day for the kids. Otherwise, knowing how I always cave in to my kids when it comes to Disney merchandise purchases, there’s no knowing how much stuff we would have to haul back home. :goodvibes They could pick one thing each day that they want to buy and wait until the end of the day to get it so that we wouldn’t have to carry it around in the parks all day.

We drove to DHS which took about 5 minutes. Closest park from AoA. We walked out of the parking lot following the path laid out for us by Disney which included circling along the entire Disney bus stop area. We arrived at the turnstiles at 8:15am with 7 people in front of us for the line I picked.

Why couldn't I have been in front of these folks? :worship:
http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/9C05FDFF-125A-4AAD-BFAE-FC8237943CDC-2121-000000D40010CC42.jpg

I decided to line up in front of one of the new RFID scanners located on the far right part of the gate. There was a big sign that said” for resort guests only” and a CM reminded everyone in line every 5 minutes that this line was for only those folks who had their park tickets on their room keys. To the left of us was a refurb zone with several turnstiles covered in the patented Disney refurb blue box. These turnstiles were being converted to RFID as well but also served as a wall partially obstructing our turnstiles from plain view which probably helped keep the lines shorter than the rest. The kids started getting bored. Their crazy dad dragging them out to the park way too early. :lmao: Once the gates opened at 8:40am, we filed in. The RFID was a breeze. No turnstiles. For each entry point there were two RFID scanners which made it easier and faster for families with kids and strollers to get through. DD took the scanner in front of me and tapped her card. I did the same with mine and scanned my finger. Then DS got his card scanned and we were in!

First stop? TSMM of course. In a very casual pace. Well, I should say casual pace for my standards. ::yes:: When we got to TSMM, I pulled FPs which gave us a return time of 9:45am. I parked the strollers and took the kids in through the standby line. We were still in front of the pack so we walked through most of the queue and stopped at the top of the last flight of stairs you walk down into the loading area.

This made me laugh out loud! Perhaps the idea that a cardiothroacic surgeon has to resort to a saw?

For our last trip, DS was too young to figure out how to work the gun so he ended up sitting on one of the adults’ laps and mostly watched the 3D action while someone else did all of the shooting. I wasn’t quite sure how he would want to play it this time but since I had to sit with both kids, I ended up having him sit in the middle. DD was ecstatic and looking forward to beating her old score which she had somehow managed to remember from our last trip. The ride started and I asked DS to pull on the string for me while I aimed the gun but he was having trouble with it. So for the first ride, it was mostly me doing all of the shooting. We got through the first ride by 8:55am. As we were walking out of the ride, I told the kids we should go again right now. DD gave big thumbs up to the plan. DS on the other hand was whining that it was boring and he didn’t want to go again. Whaaat? I knew what the issue was so I asked him if he would like to be seated in front of the gun this time. His eyes brightened up and his tone changed in snap with him leading us into the standby queue again. This time the wait time had already built up a bit. It took us about 15 minutes to go through the queue. I sat in the middle with DD to my left and DS to my right. He asked if I could aim for him so I said I would and we practiced tugging on the trigger cord. The ride started and he was having a blast this time. So was DD. When the ride came to an end, DD and DS both asked me how we did and if they beat everyone else. (Didn’t realize they had such high aspirations!) Didn’t want them to be disappointed after having such a great time so I just told them vaguely that they both won! (Don’t ask me what they won :goodvibes ). They cheered. I gave them high fives. And they were singing and giggling how they did such a great job. As our cart made its way to the unloading area, it made a sudden turn off to the disabled side with a jerk so hard it almost gave me whiplash. I thought that was unusual that we were siphoned off to this area since I was pretty sure the family sitting behind us in the same cart also loaded from the regular queue with us. It turned out that the gun they were using had not functioned properly during the ride so the CMs pulled the family aside and asked them to wait while they brought in another cart for them to go right back on again.

Next Up: A not so infinite meet and greet.

AoA looks really incredible! We are hoping to make time to go check it out on our next trip. We pass right by it to get to Publix for our grocery shopping, so hopefully it won't be too hard to get ourselves in there. The lobby area looks amazing!

How cute that the kids enjoyed TSM so much the second time around. :goodvibes Sounds like a great morning so far!

I have more pics coming of the rest of the resort when I had a chance to solo tour the grounds late at night -but yes, the place was awesome!

DD wants to go back to AoA over and over again until we've stayed at each different section! I'm still trying to convince her that we should check out AKL next time.

I don't think you should have too much trouble getting in to take a look around. Parking spots were plentiful!

I'm sorry you had to go through the experience, but your story about the group on the plane was hilarious. I can just see it now. :rotfl2: It really is a shame that their leader didn't have a flag though, so you could at least be warned.

I thought AoA was great in almost every aspect for families of 4 or more. The two full bathrooms are a huge plus in the mornings when we're all trying to get ready. There was plenty of space for the 5 of us.

We rented a minivan and drove it for most of our transportation. DW did use the buses on a couple of occasions which she said was fine and she didn't have to wait for one for too long.

Loved Landscape of Flavors! Plenty of seating. The variety of food was excellent and much different than the usual QS items we have gotten used to at Disney. Every station had their entree and side items lined up for view "Chipotle style" or "Subway Style" ;). Open kitchen layout so you can see the food being cooked in batches behing the serving stations. Very easy to navigate.

The only slight negative is that depending on which suite/building you're at, the main lobby/transportation/food court building could take a bit of walking to get to - especially if you're staying in the Little Mermaid section.

Overall, thought it was a great resort!

Can't say enough about DW helping us get there a day early!

If the leader did have a flag, I can see him trying to somehow force it into a small overhead bin! :lmao: By the time the flashes started popping, I really had to start laughing and tried to make light of the situation. I started thinking what could be going through his mind as he's taking these pictures through his window with a flash popping each time. Was it "Hmmmm, why do I keep getting this gigantic glare that obscures the scenery below? Must be because I'm not using enough flash". Or was it "I can't believe what a crappy flash I have. I mean, it's not even lighting up that dark building 10,000 feet below I'm trying to take a picture of!" Once I started coming up with these, it made it a lot easier to deal with it. :rotfl:

I felt bad for DS during our first TSMM. I wasn't sure of leaving the little guy sitting on the outer portion of the vehicle, so I thought it would be best if he sat in the middle. Just glad that we had multiple tries on TSMM!

I think I've moved on from my post-Disney blues thanks to a DIS friend asking to help put together a touring plan for one of her friends who will be visiting Disney for the very first time. Thas was fun! :goodvibes

And now I'm starting to think about our trip next year in January again so that's helping me along as well. Looking at crowd calendars, thinking about restaurants I want to try, hoping that the Mine Ride will miraculously open ahead of schedule. :cool1:

Friday January 25th - 9:20am

After we got out of TSMM, we took a quick restroom break. Can I just say how much I lovvvvve the companion/family bathrooms? And I say this as a dad who does a lot of traveling or visiting local attractions solo with the kids. These bathrooms are a godsend. I can get the kids multitasking with the sink being right there. And I don’t have to worry about one of the kids deciding to open the stall door while the other child or even I’m still using the bathroom. Or when DD announces she doesn't want to go into the boy's room. It used to be even more convenient when I had diapers to change and believe me, most public mens rooms do NOT have changing tables. Thanks to no changing tables, I had gotten pretty good at changing diapers cramped in a stall with them standing up. I used to call this the “vertical diaper change”. Sorry, I digressed. Back to programming.

Next, we hopped over the pathway from TSMM to get in line for Woody and Buzz meet and greet. DS had been telling me how much he wanted to meet both of them and was even more excited when I told him that we would meet them in Andy’s bedroom. It was already 9:25am and the wait time was 35 minutes. But considering how much DS wanted to do this and DD didn’t seem to mind the idea, we got in line. I really liked all of the mini photo props they created along the queue pathway.

Hmmm, not sure if these straps meet safety standards.
http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5367_zps113f4e9e.jpg

Watching DD strap DS onto the rocket with him bearing a big grin on his face had me laughing for a while. I’m sure she’s felt like wanting her younger brother blasted out of this planet many times when she feels annoyed by his antics. There were also the three-eyed green aliens. I told DD to pretend that “The Claaaaaaaw” was going to get her as she stood behind the aliens.

Ooooooo, the Claaaaaaaaw
http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5365_zps34491b89.jpg

I think the only problem with this place was that there wasn’t enough space to adequately take pictures. To get the whole prop in, you had to step way back but that was hard to do with everyone else in line. Fortunately, for our group in the line, everyone was taking turns and clearing the way for each family to get their photo without having another family photobomb the pictures. I joked with another dad standing behind me how cramped this whole space was. He replied by saying “Yeah, I liked the layout on the map much better than the real thing” and pointed to the map at the front of the queue. Definitely not to scale. The kids began petering out after in line for 20 minutes. They started sitting down on the floor becoming more restless.

It was finally our turn. Anyone want to take a guess as to what happened next? DD took one look at Woody and Buzz and decided this wasn’t for her. She planted both of her feet squarely behind the line and did not budge. I told her that it was okay if she wanted to just watch and not participate. No need to make Toy Story a traumatic experience! But now DS was feeding off from her queue and decided that he was too shy and intimidated to meet them as well. He had been clutching on to his miniature buzz action figure during the past 30 minutes so I told him that he should show the toy to Buzz. That didn’t take either. I carried him over into the center of the greet area. He buried his head into my shoulders. The CM was tending to DD during this process. The photopass photographer managed to get a couple of pictures of me with DD missing and DS trying to burrow into my shoulders. I’m sure I looked like the dad who dragged his kids in just so that he could get a picture with Woody and Buzz. And if you read my TR from April, it was déjà vu all over again for me with the whole experience playing out exactly as it did with Phineas and Ferb. Maybe I need to rethink which characters I want to start out the trip with and start with the easy ones like Mickey or Pooh. I later asked DD what she was most concerned with and she told me they were too big. Maybe it was that they appeared to be too imposing.

Well, orginially I had planned on taking the kids next to meet Mike W. and Sulley. But after that dud, I wasn’t sure if doing another meet and greet was such a good idea especially considering that these characters are monsters after all! I calmed the kids down a bit with some snacks from my backpack while sitting around the mermaid fountain. Mmmmm, chocolates at 10 in the morning but that’s all I had in my backpack and none of the snack stations were open this early in the morning. The kids certainly weren’t complaining. Then we decided to use our FPs for TSMM. The kids once again got a gun each and I sat in the middle aiming for DS. That seemed to cure any Toy Story phobia that may have lingered from the previous experience!

When we came out, I decided to press the Monsters Inc meet and greet one more time. DD seemed agreeable to it. DS wasn’t so sure anymore. So I told them that we would go take a peek at them and they can tell me if this is something they would like to do.

Mike and Sulley must have been taking a break because they weren’t there. But the CM and Photopass photog were there. DD saw Boo’s door and decided that this would be okay after all. So we got in line and 2 minutes later in came our monsters.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/C8AD9DE5-61EC-4B22-B4D4-A9C0F099AFF6-2121-000000DBFE1DEA91.jpg

When it was our turn DD ran to Sulley to give him a big hug. Sulley then teased DD a bit by copying her movements. DS was once again burying his head in my shoulders. DS was also wearing a Mike shirt and we tried to show it to him. Photopass took a picture of all of us with me and DD looking at the camera and DS drilling another hole into my other good shoulder with his face.

I decided to take a break from the meet and greet adventures and we walked over to the Honey I Shrunk the Kids Playground.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/4675D84E-FF3B-4B06-B254-50E6A8D09192-2121-000000DDC3B24E94.jpg

The kids immediately ran towards the “spider web” net play structure. If you haven’t been on it before, the whole structure is made of rope netting where you climb up a path spiraling up a column than bounce your way down another path that spirals its way down. As soon as they exited, DS and DD would run back to the entrance to start all over again. The first three times, I wasn’t sure yet whether DS could handle the inclines so I followed behind them. He did just fine without any assistance. AND, by the third time out I was getting a bit woozy and felt the ground underneath my feet was bouncing with me. So I stood by the exit and watched them go on it over and over and over again. I tried to remind them that there were other slides and things to try but they didn’t care. Just having too much fun.
We spent a good 40 minutes there. It was time to start making our way to Epcot. So I practically pried them away from the playground and bought them a couple of water bottles before walking towards the exit.

I know exactly what you mean about the vertical diaper change thing... DW coaches volleyball and cheerleading at a high school. We go to a lot of volleyball and basketball games and as you might guess, the men's room at most high school gyms has no changing table. I'm not too crazy about laying DD down on a bathroom floor, so she usually just gets changed between rows in the bleachers... :rolleyes1

I'm sorry the M&G experience kind of turned into a dud. Especially with as long as the wait was to see Woody and Buzz. Hopefully your DS will come out of his shell.

I think he will eventually get the hang of it. He does better with furry and animal based characters like the Fab Five or Pooh and the gang. Shy of face characters. And scared of non-face human based characters like Woody or Phineas/Ferb (well, not exactly human :lmao:)

Great pictures. Bummer about the kids not wanting to go up but I think if I were that small looking at something so big, I would be to. Maybe next trip.EPCOT can't wait to hear about that park.

I think you're right in that the size of the characters is what bothered my kids. I also think the issue was that this was their first meet and greet for the trip and they were not used to the idea of these larger than life characters. Things did get better as the trip went on with some of the other characters!

Disney Picture #1

I'm starting to make some progress of going through the pictures I took and thought I'd start posting a few of my more favorite ones.

I took this one on our last day at Disney. DD and I were sitting on a curb outside the Emporium waiting for Celebrate a Dream Come True to begin. Then we were headed to the airport. It was a slightly windy day with occasional blusters sweeping through Main Street and I saw this CM making her way down Main Street while pulling her balloons which were being blown back. I loved the way the balloons were being swept back by the wind and the way she was holding them that I had to take a snap.

Aw, sorry your character meet fell apart like that, especially after such a long wait! That really stinks, but I guess I can see DD's point. They look big to me at my size, so I can only imagine how huge and imposing they seem to kids! At least the Monsters Inc. meet went a little better though. :goodvibes

That pic of the CM with the balloons is so cool! I have seen them holding them like that before when it's windy but never thought to take a picture. :thumbsup2

Thanks. I think by our next trip, the kids will be fine with all of the meet and greets. I've made a note to self that we should test the waters again then with a character meal first. ;) I have another picture of the CM that came out a bit unfocused taken from the front and the balloons resembled a parachute!

I love your pictures!!

I think the characters available at DHS are one of its strengths. They're so Pixar-centric and a lot of characters you can't see in other parks. In addition to the ones I mentioned, you can also meet the Incredibles. You should definitely check it out in June!

I've been having a very relaxing Disney and DIS Friday evening. And thinking about our 2014 trip. Yup, I've been putting together a day to day itinerary for a trip that's a year away!

My current big dilemma? Whether we should try Jiko or Sanaa. Both of which would be a first time. Leaning towards Jiko as long as the kids can keep things together for the length of the meal. :thumbsup2

Friday January 25th - 11:30am

Once we exited through the gates of DHS it was already 11:30am. Our Akershus ADR was for 12:10pm. Had a dilemma. Do I take the minivan over to Epcot? Or should I take the boat over to Epcot? Decided that the boat might be the better option since it may require less walking and time as opposed to trying to park at Epcot. I turned towards the Friendship boats and saw one docked. I tried to get DD to hustle with me but we didn’t make it in time and the boat left. Another one came in 10 minutes and we were off. The boat ride itself took 25 minutes from the time we left DHS and arrived at International Gateway. It was a pleasant ride with a nice breeze accompanying us. It was 12:08 when we arrived at International Gateway. We scurried halfway around the World (Showcase) and checked in at 12:17. DS took that 10 minute opportunity to start his nap. They let us in with the stroller so that DS could continue to sleep and parked him at our table and out of everyone’s way.

Belle first greeted us at the door and DD was in heaven. She goes into her “princess mode” at these type of events or attractions where a serene smile stays on her face and she glides when she’s walking. DD was wearing her new t-shirt I bought her which had 8 princesses’ faces drawn on it. We sat down and ordered our entrees. Fortunately, our table was not too far from the buffet tables where the appetizers and salads were located so I made a quick trip to get some food for DD while keeping one eye on the kids at the table. When I got back, they were starting the Princess Procession where kids can line up behind a princess and participate in a small parade around the restaurant. DD eyes lit up when she heard the announcement. She jumped off her chair and was the first to line up behind Aurora.

Sleeping Beauty's Princess Procession - with a perfected princess wave!
http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5393_zpseccf6738.jpg

She followed Aurora once the parade started and disappeared from my view but a couple of minutes later I saw her procession making their way towards our table. She had a big smile on and was doing the princess wave!

Once the parade was over, we saw Aurora making her way across the room getting closer to us. DD suddenly looked at me with panic. “Dad! There’s no Aurora on my shirt! She’ll be so upset!” I hadn’t paid attention to who was on her shirt and who wasn’t. I thought everyone was on there. I reassured her that Aurora would not be upset and that she would be just as happy to see all of her princess friends on her shirt. Aurora came and called DS a “Sleeping Prince!” I joked by saying “It may take a kiss from a princess to wake him up” to which she replied “Yes, a very special princess” and I said “He would be a very grumpy prince if he woke up now”.

Snow White came and we talked about what the dwarves were up to. She said they were busy in the mines looking for some special jewels. Ariel came next and DD told her that she couldn’t wait to try her new ride in the Magic Kingdom. Ariel replied by saying “Make sure to say hi to Scuttle for me. He’ll give you a great tour”.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5417_zpsf561470c.jpg

Finally Cinderella came and she made DD promise to visit her at her castle.

I loved how expressive Cinderella was with DD

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5406_zps10b4246f.jpg

The food was decent. I had the Salmon cakes – a slight twist to the usual crabcakes and they were good. Of course, DS woke up right when the dessert plate in family servings showed up. He had no interest in the cheese pizza I had ordered for him. But the two kids devoured the chocolate cake. So let me recap what DS had eaten all day to this point: Some yogurt and muffin in the morning, some chocolates for a morning snack, and a chocolate cake for lunch. I’m such a responsible father. :lmao:

On our way out of the restaurant, we took our restroom breaks. (You all are probably loving all these detailed restroom reports!) I told DD to go into the women’s room and I took DS to the mens room. A couple of minutes later, I heard my daughter poking her head through the door and yelling for everyone in the restroom to hear: “Daaaaaaaady! The line in the women’s room is toooooooo looooooong and I don’t think I can hoooooold it!!!”. There was one other dad with his son in the restroom and he started laughing. He said it was fine and that he’s been there and done that. I told DD to come in since she practically announced her entrance. As we left Norway, I asked the kids if there’s anything they would like to see in the World Showcase and got a blank stare. All DD wanted at this point was to go back to our resort so that she could buy her pencil case. Did I mention she had been asking me about that case all day?

We took the boat back to DHS to get back into our car. On our way, the skippers of the boat handed some stickers to DD and DS. DS decided to put one of those stickers over his mouth which drew some chuckles from the captains. I joked with them that I don’t mind him doing that at all and getting a break from him! We found our car and went back to AoA. I hadn’t received a text yet about our room so I checked with the front desk and they told me that the room was ready and wasn’t sure why the text had not gone through. So we went back to our car, grabbed our bags, and went to building 4, one of the Finding Nemo Suites buildings. When we got to our room, I flashed our key cars against the lockpad but nothing happened. I tried all five key cards and still nothing happened. In the meantime, DD was now declaring another restroom emergency. I didn’t have the strength to drag all of our luggage back to the main building again with the kids in tow. I saw a manager for janitorial services come out into the hallway so I went up to her to explain what was going on and that I wanted to call the front desk to see if I have the right room. She saw DD doing her “I can’t hold it much longer” dance so she opened the door to our presumed room and I used the phone to call the front desk. I did indeed have the right room number and the receptionist said there must be something wrong with our key cards. They would send someone up to our room with a new set of KTTW cards so I waited in the room and surveyed the suite while the kids decided it was pool time, found their swim suits from the suitcases and started changing.

I really loved the layout of the suite, especially the fact that there were two full bathrooms. Bathrooms were designed in the theme of the submarine that Bruce and company reside in complete with the phrase “fish are friends” scribed along the edge of the mirror.

How often do you get a room tour that starts with the bathrooms? ;) Here is the Master Bath

As I was unpacking a little from the suitcases, the kids were playing “jump the jellyfish” by jumping from the green stools/tables/footrests to the couch laughing and giggling all along. Then a couple of minutes later I noticed they were both on the floor laying on their stomachs flailing their arms and legs. I asked them what in the world they were doing and they told me they were pretending to be swimming in the ocean. :lmao: Made sense – the entire suite was designed and decorated as if we were under the sea. A CM finally arrived and gave us our new key cards. The kids now were ready to bolt out the door to head to the pool. The only problem? I forgot to pack my swim suit. When I wondered out loud whether we should hold off going to the pool until later in the trip, there was a very loud protest from the kids. So, the best I could do was change into my shorts and go out to the pool with my slipons shoes

Your Princess pictures look great! I really wanted to eat there so I could get the royal treatment, but my sister is a pretty plain eater so I couldn't sell the food to her. That's too funny that DD noticed Aurora wasn't on her shirt. Kids notice the tiniest things, don't they?! :rotfl:

That's a bummer that your room keys didn't work. However, that's awesome that they'd let you in anyways for the bathroom while they sorted it out. I've heard stories of Disney being a little finicky about letting people in if their keys don't work so its great to hear they were so understanding.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the suite! So awesome! :hyper: I was really impressed with the AoA room decor. It's immersively Disney, but not so much that its in your face. It's fun, but not too over the top!

Can't wait to hear more!

I really like Akershus. It's cheaper than Cinderella's Royal Table but you essentially have the same characters. The entry photo with Belle is included in your meal price just like CRT. I completely understand the non-adventurous eater in the group conundrum as I have a father and a few inlaws that are like that. In the past, we did Akershus breakfast to acommodate them - mostly standard Disney breakfast food. And with 8:05am ADRs, we got to enjoy a near empty Future World on our way in.

I think the housekeeping manager was willing to help out with letting us in the room because she saw me with all this luggage and two young children, and because I showed her the check-in packet where the front desk CM had written down the room number. She said, "Yup, this is your room according to this. And we did clean this room for a new check in this morning". I was just so grateful because of DD and her emergency. I swear, she really knows how to pick her moments! :lmao:

Totally agree with how much the entire resort in and out of the room just glows with Disney atmosphere! DD wants to go back to AoA over and over again until we've stayed at all of the different sections!

I thought the same thing about the princesses we met at Akershus - how they all seemed to look and talk like the real deals. I think we tend to see more deviations with Belle than others.

The kids absolutely adored the room! They were so excited about this bed that pops out from the wall. Getting them in bed had never been easier! :lmao:

Caught up!!! Loving the AoA Nemo pics!! Looks like so much fun!! Now...you know I'm going to need some New FL planning help, right?? I so wish they would do some sort of official roll-out date so I'd know if the magic bands would be fully in place in March!

Your Akershus pics are great! I was :rotfl2:at the story about DD and the bathroom! Several years ago, we went to MK and did the Keys to the Kingdom Tour (it was just DH and I and another couple). At the "potty break" time, one of the women's room stalls was locked and no one was in there. The line was long but no one would try to go in that one. I figured I work in a HS....I am exposed to much grosser stuff every day, so I did what had to be done and crawled under the door to unlock it. Another woman walked out to the group outside and announced that "SOME woman crawled under the bathroom door". DH said, "I bet that was my wife." :rotfl2: tell DD we just do what has to be done! ;)

Wait till you see all of the pics from the rest of the AoA resort! And the Big Blue Pool is so much fun.

I think you'll be safe from the full implementation of the My Magic+ program for March. From what I've been reading, they are anticipating a roll out for the later in the year and sounds like for sure will impact our trip in 2014. In the mean time, if you need any info on New FL let me know! Not sure at this current pace of Trip Report posting that I'll get to our MK day before your trip comes up since it's getting so close!

Your restroom story is hilarious! As the saying goes, when you have to go you have to go!

Disney Picture #2

Nothing like working on an article for work at 2am on a Saturday night - serves me right for procrastinating! Before I head to bed, thought I'd post another picture from this trip.

I took this one on our way out of Epcot. The kids were getting tired and we didn't think they could make it through Illuminations so we decided to call it a night at 8pm and head back to our AoA. As we were walking out, it dawned on me that it had been a long time since I've seen Spaceship Earth all lit up at night. I think the last time must have been in 2001! Last year, we finished our Epcot day with an Illuminations Cruise so we left the park on our boat to the YC. I don't think I quite appreciated the multi-colored lighting shining on Earth before. Anyway, I've been staring at this picture for a few minutes now and it's starting to mess with my depth perception the same way those silly Magic Eye pictures do! Still, very plesant. And if you look very closely on the right lower quadrant of this beautifully oversized golfball, you can make out the reflections of the palm trees that are planted nearby. Ok, I'm off to bed!

Spent a lot of time typing and writing for work today. DD6 decided to give everyone "tattoos" tonight by drawing on our hands, arms, and feet. DS got the most because he kept asking for more and more. I wasn't paying attention to what she was drawing on my left hand until she announced she was done. I looked over and saw Mike Wazowski.....with one i. Had to share.

Loving the pics and report, Dave! The suite looks cute. Can I say, I love that the shower is glass doors ~ shower curtains gross me out, lol! Oh, and I've heard (and it has always been the case for us) that Values get a shampoo/conditoner combo while Deluxe gets a seperate shampoo and conditioner :confused3

Ah, that makes sense with the shampoo! I just loved everything about the bathrooms in the suite which is why I posted those pics first before the rest of the room! :lmao:

The princesses seem like they must have been fantastic. They were really on their A game with some of their comments to DD, and I love the part about your DS and Sleeping Beauty. You were absolutely right about the grumpy prince part! :lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

And by the way, I don't see a thing wrong with what you fed DS all day. That's why they call it vacation.

The room at AoA looks awesome. I really want to stay there sometime and check it all out! Sorry about the room key issue though. RFID, right? Ours seemed to work perfectly sometimes when we were at CSR, and other times it seemed to take forever to get it to pick them up. :confused3

I love the picture of Spaceship Earth! :thumbsup2

The princesses were great! For this trip, I think the other thing that I believe made a significant difference in terms of levels of interactions was that we did not have any autograph books. That just opened up a lot more time to talk and hug for the kids and things felt less rushed.

After Snow White left the table, DD said to me "Ohhhh, I was going to ask if she still likes to eat apples!" :lmao:

The only other time I had trouble with the RFID was at the Ink and Paint Shop when I tried to use the RFID pay-to-go scanner. So for the most part, it worked okay. I do like seeing the green/white light swirling faster and faster after you tap the card against it!

I was so focused on getting the kids packed a day early that it completely slipped my mind even though I had set it aside in our bedroom!

Friday January 25th - 3:00pm

Once we got out to the pool, I had a heck of a time finding an empty beach chair to set our stuff down. I couldn’t find a life vest for DS. There were about three left in the bin and were all too big for him. I got DD one. Then I reminded them that they need to be good listeners since I can’t go deep into the pool with them and that DS needed to stay in the shallow end of the zero entry pool. The problem was that DS was not being good about listening to my instructions when I told him to turn around before it got too deep for him. DD was doing fine with her life vest on and she’s more used to swimming in the water by herself. A couple of times I had to tell DS to turn around and he barely listened. He kept waddling inch by inch towards the deep end, and I knew he was about to get in trouble. So when the water got to his chin level and he appeared to be stuck and unable to move himself back to the shallow end, I rushed in to the pool to get him. Fortunately, another gentleman was playing with his toddler son right next to where DS was, saw DS and hoisted him up by lifting on his arms for a couple of seconds until I got to DS. I thanked him profusely. Then I took DS out of the pool. I could tell from the look on his face that he knew he was in trouble and I used it as a “teaching moment” about pool safety and listening to instructions. Needless to say, my shorts were soaked! I had to get DD out of the pool as well so that we could head back to the room and cut our pool time extremely short. The kids did not take this very well as you can imagine and DD got into some trouble of her own when she decided to vibrantly vocalize her displeasure.

Once we got back to the room, we changed back into our clothes. We went back to the Ink and Paint Shop and I got the kids their picks for souvenirs. DD finally got her pencil case and couldn’t wait to open it. And DS picked out a racing car decked out in Buzz Lightyear décor. I still had another 2.5 hours before we had to head out to the airport to pick up DFIL who was flying in from Ohio at 6:40pm. What to do, what to do. I decided that we should make a short visit to Magic Kingdom even if it was just to see Main Street and the Castle to start off our Disney stay.

We parked in the villains section of the parking lot at Magic Kingdom in the Zurg section. The same Zurg that DD finds scary – or at least she did last year but maybe not so much this year. Because of that, the kids and especially DD had no trouble remembering our parking spot. We got on the Express Monorail and with us in our section of the cabin was a family of three. As the monorail zoomed through the Contemporary Resort, the mom of the group asked me if this train didn’t stop at CR. I told her that the Express Monorail only has two stops: MK and TTC. I told her they could get off at MK and either walk over to CR or take the Resort Monorail which will stop at CR.

As we entered Magic Kingdom, the beautiful sight of Main Street topped off with Cinderella’s Castle at the end came into focus. I just can’t get enough of that view. While slowly strolling down Main Street, I asked the kids what they wanted to do. They started a chorus of “Barnstormer”. I asked them to pick a different one because a) the lines would be fairly long this time in the afternoon, and b) I didn’t think we could squeeze all three of us in one row for the ride. So, DD then picked the Enchanted Tiki Room! Going to be completely honest with you – if it weren’t for the kids, I probably would not have thought to have set foot in this attraction for the entire trip. When we got to the hub, the stage show in front of the castle started up and we stood there to watch it for a little while.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5430_zpsf935da90.jpg

The kids enjoyed it. Very similar themes to the afternoon parade but with more action and special effects. It mixes princesses with pirates and Pan along with Mickey and the gang managing to attract both boys and girls. Then we moved over to Adventureland and entered the Tiki Room.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5435_zpseda38e13.jpg

We got ourselves a front row bench and a couple of minutes later the CM came over and woke up Jose with her stick. It’s a cute show with some songs that have a way of really sticking to your head long after you leave.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5437_zpse13e3d30.jpg

The part where the female birds enter singing always gives me a chuckle.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5440_zps9a1b05b1.jpg

At one point in the show, I looked up at Jose and saw his tail section pointed straight at my face. And all I could think of was how I was about to get bird poop on my face with the way it was pointed. :lmao: Tried very hard not to laugh out loud.

An older couple sitting behind us were singing along with the birds. I thought that was very cute. DD and DS loved it of course and were singing the Tiki song as we exited the attraction.

After the Tiki show, we grabbed a quick bite to eat at Peco Bills. I had the bacon cheeseburger and the kids had their pb&j sandwiches. Then we were out the gates to pick up DFIL from the airport. Except I had severely miscalculated our departure time – it took us 30 minutes to get to our car and when we did, DFIL was already calling me on my cell telling me that he had collected his baggage. I told him I was very sorry for falling behind and that I would be about 30 minutes late. On the ride back to the TTC using the Express Monorail, one of the families we were riding with asked me if this train would take them to Epcot. I told them that they would have to get off at the TTC and transfer to the Epcot Monorail. After spending so much time on DIS, I tend to forget how the majority of visitors to WDW are “newbies”. But then again, I had just underestimated the time it would take from MK to our car.

Not only was I thirty minutes behind in getting to the airport, I ended up on the wrong terminal and spent an extra 10 minutes circling the arrival driveway looking for DFIL. I completely blanked out on the fact that DFIL was flying in on a different airline than we did. I was just off this day. I had been circling the terminal that the kids and I arrived in. Finally after getting in touch with him on the cell, we were able to locate him and pick him up at curbside. The kids were ecstatic to see their grandpa. DFIL was equally excited about seeing the kids again and about his second trip to Disney. We all went back to our hotel suite. I got the kids bathed and tucked in bed and it was about 9:20pm.

What a great way to spend 2.5 hours waiting!

I haven't seen the Tiki Room in the LONGEST time! It just never really crosses my mind!

I find airports confusing anyway! I mean, I really shouldn't because I've been in them enough times, but it's always like wait, where am I supposed to go?? Aww, I'm sure the kids were happy to see their grandfather! Too cute!!

I love the Tiki room - I try to go on it at least once during every trip, even if it's just to escape the sun or crowds for a few minutes. And I love the pictures you were able to get of the birds! My camera went kaput after this trip, so I'm looking into finally upgrading, particularly to one that does better in low light situations. What kind of camera do you use?

It was really nice to be able to enter MK without an agenda. Just sort of going with the flow and taking in the scenery.

I can say now that I am an expert of the lay out of MCO in and out of the terminal! :rotfl:

Thank you! The pics from the Tiki Room were shot using Canon EOS T2i with a 17-55mm f/2.8 lens.

I finally decided to graduate from the point-and-shoot camera after our trip in April when most of my low light and movement pictures turned out to be bad. When I upgraded, I wasn't sure if I was ready to take this on as a major hobby so decided to go with an entry level DSLR. After researching, I went with the Canon EOS T2i which was an older model of the line but was cheap. Needless to say, in terms of picture quality though, it was such a huge upgrade right away from the point-shoot.

It turned out that I'm really enjoying photography and am trying to learn more and more. It also turns out to be a very expensive hobby! So over the past 9 months, I've gotten a couple of nice lens. And now I want to upgrade my camera body again because I'm starting notice some flaws in the picture quality and the speed of my current one! What a slippery slope this photo hobby has become! :rotfl:

Thanks for the info! I'm actually going through the same thing right now. I've only used a P&S in the past, and fortunately it waited until after I got home to die, heh. I'm really torn on going the Advanced P&S route and getting the Sony RX-100 (semi-expensive, but still really portable and no need to worry about buying and changing lenses) or going all in and making the leap to DSLR.

I hope your learning experience for the kids at the pool actually left an imprint with them. :headache:

I'd never really thought about the Tiki birds in that way before, but yeah, definitely glad they're audio animatronics. I don't think too many people would be willing to sit in a theater with a bunch of live birds right over their heads. :rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

It really is kind of a shock sometimes when you realize so many people don't understand all the little tricks and the logistics of getting around Disney World. It kind of makes me wonder why they don't do a better job of making sure people know about everything? I mean sure there are signs, but we all know about 75% of the people around don't read signs anyway. :rolleyes1 :lmao:

It did leave an imprint with them as I found out later in the trip, especially for DS. I'll tell you more about that later in the TR when we went back to the pool a couple of days later. ;)

I've been an avid DISer for our past 3 trips. I remember back in Dec 2008 when we went to Disney for the first time with DD (and DS wasn't born yet), I was so green when it came to Disney and not being aware of all it had to offer. I didn't know even know about the character meals and only found out about them as we were walking by Crystal Palace and saw Pooh and the gang through the windows!

The one that still makes me laugh to this day is when we were at Epcot and it was nearing dinner time. I didn't know about ADRs at the time so we went through the whole trip mostly on QS. But this one evening at Epcot, DW said she wanted to try a sit down place for dinner. We just happened to be in Canada when this conversation took place. So I see this little restaurant over there that appeared to be a steakhouse and I tell DW, "How about that one?". DW walked over to the hostess to see if we could be seated and came back disappointed saying that they were completely booked. So we went elsewhere. Had no idea at the time how popular Le Cellier was and how people were making reservations 180 days in advance! :lmao:

It really isn't hard to understand why some people just "hate" Disney. If you aren't aware of these things and go once, you probably aren't going to have a very good time, and likely might not want to go back. I guess that's kind of why I don't like the 180 ADR thing and having to know which park/what restaurant I want on a given day that far in advance. :headache:

I'm trying not to come to conclusions either. There's so much missing info right now. I'm just hoping that there will have been enough of a buffer period between the time they implement it and our trip in Jan 2014 to be able to see how it affects wait times.

Disney Picture #3

This one comes from my solo night time tour of AoA on our first night at the resort which I will probably be able to post the full update tomorrow with a lot more pictures! At AoA, Sheriff is positioned at the entrance area to the Cars section or I should say Radiator Springs.

Cars is by far DS' favorite movie. He has memorized many parts of the movie and can give you a lot of different quotes from it. Two of his favorite quotes from Sheriff are "Not in my town you don't" which is spoken in the exact scene replicated at AoA, and "Boy, You're in a heap of trouble!" I thought that this look from Sheriff pretty much captures the sentiments from those two quotes. Whenever DS would walk by Sheriff at night, he would get excited that his "lights" (what he means is siren) are on!

Had a busy weekend and got behind, but I'm all caught up now!

Your bathroom story had me :rotfl:. Lucky DD is still young enough to qualify for a trip to the men's room when the line at the women's is too long! At my age, I don't have that option, and trust me, after two days at the Mardi Gras parades this weekend, it would have been a big help!! :rotfl2:

The photo of SE at night is gorgeous!!! It is not my favorite icon (the Castle is, obviously!), but lit up at night it is pretty hard to beat. So beautiful!

The Nemo suite looks really amazing. So much space! And the themeing is spot on. Those jellyfish lamps are incredible!

:scared: The pool! I bet it was really harrowing watching DS go deeper and deeper. And you just keep hoping that they will listen to you and turn around so you don't have to jump in with your clothes on but they just keep going, don't they? Paxton has a habit of pulling those kinds of stunts too!! Life with a toddler trying to discover their independence I guess.

Great updates! And love that shot of the Sheriff. I'll have to show it to Paxton later when he gets home. He is crazy about Cars!

Welcome back from your Mardis Gras parades! Just read your update on your TR and sounds like you had a great time with your family.

As I was passing by Spaceship Earth all lit up at night, I really wanted to do a nighttime tour of Epcot (especially WS) and Animal Kingdom! Josh from easywdw just posted a nighttime tour of AK and it looks absolutely gorgeous. I think that's what I'm going to try to do for my next solo mini-tour once the kids are tucked in!

Yes, it was a bit scary when he continued to move towards the deep end. He did learn his lesson though as I found out a couple of days later.

Friday, January 25th - 9:00pm

So at this point in the story, I should tell you what had been going on with DW and her flight during the latter part of the day. She and I had been trading texts and periodically calling each other to get flight updates. The winter “storm” didn’t amount to much accumulation but it was enough to grind things to a halt at Reagan National. Her flight kept getting pushed back and back as the day progressed. She had tried getting on an earlier flight before the peak of the snowfall but that flight was already over booked. Her original flight was supposed to have landed in MCO at 9:50pm. By the time all was said and done, her flight took off with a 2 hour delay and was scheduled to arrive in Orlando around 11:40pm. I was just happy that her flight wasn’t canceled at all. Reminded her to try to take a nap but I know she won't be able to since she's very light sleeper. I was also glad that the kids and I made the trip the day before. Making a midnight arrival with the kids would have been very difficult and the kids would have been off to a bad start the next morning due to the lack of sleep.

I had about two hours to spare after the kids went to bed and before I had to drive out to the airport to pick up DW. DFIL was ready to turn in for the night as well so I told him that I would walk around the resort and then head straight to the airport when it was time. The kids jumped into the "Table Bed" as they called it and was excited to be sleeping underneath Marlin and Nemo. ;) I grabbed my camera and started touring the rest of the resort.

It was a very pleasant and relaxing experience as I strolled around AoA by myself. First I went over to the Cars Suites section. There was Sheriff at the entrance to Radiator Springs and manning a speedtrap!

I remember Josh from EasyWDW describing this area as a cheaper version of Cars Land over at Disneyland Resort in California. To some extent, I agreed with him. Having been in Cars Land back in October with all its neon glory, this version felt slightly tame. But I still enjoyed seeing all of the characters some of which are missing over at Cars Land. The Cozy Cone Motel themed pool also looked very inviting.

As I walked back out of the Cars section, I saw a CM along the pathway sweeping. Mind you that this is about 10pm. The walking path made of asphalt/concrete is lined on both sides with gravel. This particular CM was sweeping the gravel and pebbles off the walking path and onto the sides! Part of me thought “Wow, Disney really goes to extreme in trying to make every area presentable”. The other part of me said “Wow, that has to be an endless task”.

I then walked over to the other side Animation Hall. First I walked through the Lion King section which was guarded by Rafiki himself at the entrance of the walking path.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5507_zps7374cf2f.jpg

And behind him was Simba. A full moon was out and I just happened to look up from right below Pride Rock and saw Simba almost glowing in the moonlight. It was pretty neat!

What was conspicuously missing in this section was a pool. There was a playground area themed around the elephant graveyard from the movie with a complete set of hyenas. But that was about it. I think as far as theming goes, this was the least imaginative of the four sections at AoA. It may also have been because the whole section was not as well lit as the other parts so everything gave out a dark vibe which worked well for the elephant graveyard playground!

Finally, I reached the Little Mermaid section which was a welcomed and bright relief. I was a little thrown off by the scale of things. When Finding Nemo suites were first opened, I remember reading and hearing Disney making a point about how everything was scaled as if the guests were the size of Nemo. I guess the same could be said for the Lion King and Cars from what I saw. But in the Little Mermaid section, there was a pipe that was as big as the statue of Prince Eric. It did look good though and the theming and the colors were great. Overall, much more cheerful than the Lion King area!

I have to say though, the distance between LM and Animation Hall was the longest of all the sections. It does come with its own pool. I headed back towards our Finding Nemo section.

After touring the entire resort, I came to the conclusion that we had chosen well with Finding Nemo and that it was my favorite section. That’s not taking away from any of the other sections. The whole place was very well done. I went back to the Finding Nemo section to take a few more pictures.

This is at the splash and play area right next to the pool.

The pool was very quiet at this point with just 3-4 people in it. The water play area located on the back side of the pool area was turned off and deserted. There was also a pool side bar called “The Drop Off” which was still serving drinks to a handful of guests sitting at the bar. If I didn't have to drive to the airport, I would have loved to have sat down there and enjoyed a quiet drink!

I went back into Animation Hall and looked around the lobby area.

As I was taking this last picture, a very friendly guest walked up to me and told me about one particular drawing on the other side of this decoration that John Lasseter had signed with Mcqueen in it. She was so excited to tell me - clearly a Disney fan and probably a fellow DIS member. Her friend was laughing at her jubilance. I said as she was leaving that I completely shared her sentiments but I don't think she got to hear me.

I was getting thirsty with all of the walking and it was about 11pm. The food court, Landscape of Flavors, was still open so I walked in to grab a bottle of Coke Zero. If you haven’t noticed yet, by the way, I’m seriously addicted to Zero and 11pm is not late enough to stay away from it! I sat in the lobby area watching the colors of the front desk and the various drawings on the wall before it was time to drive out to the airport for the second time that evening. I parked myself at the cell phone lot at the airport, and when DW texted me I drove up to the curbside and picked her up. I'm telling you, I know this airport inside and out now! I was so happy and relieved to see DW standing at the curbside. What an ordeal for her - she spent about 6.5 hours at Reagan National before she boarded her plane. We got back to our room around 12:50pm and went straight to bed. The kids didn’t even stir when we walked in. They were completely out.

Next Up: Morning in Animal Kingdom!

Love the pictures from the Cars section! I was sad we never made it back at night because I heard everything looked cool when it was lit up.

I agree about the LM section. I loved it, but I could see how it was sort of pushy campy. For the most part everything was huge and way over 'immersively sized', especially compared to the other sections.

Loved your nighttime tour of AoA! I see what you are saying about the LM section. From the pics I have seen from a bunch of TR's, that area is more reminiscent of the All Star resorts and Pop with the gigantic icons. I am now even more excited to check it all out in person. :goodvibes

I'm glad you had a chance to have a quiet walk around the resort taking some pictures. I just can't get enough of the AoA resort. They did a great job with it.

It's also good that your DW was able to get in without too much of a delay. That much time sitting in an airport is never fun, but much better to have a few hours of delay than to have to re-book to the next day or something. :thumbsup2

I think the Cars section benefited the most from the nighttime lighting.

"Pushy campy" I like how you put that! Oh and I didn't have a good picture of it, but the gigantic Ursula was a little hard to look at :lmao: I did love how the interior of the rooms looked from your TR. :thumbsup2

I think she spent most of the time at the airport with her e-book. She seemed to be in good spirits whenever I checked in on her over the phone. As beautiful Reagan National Airport is in the main terminal, when you actually get to the gate area it gets really cramped with very few restaurant options. If I'm traveling by myself I usually park myself in front of the Five Guys Burger. :goodvibes

Yeah, I've flown out of there a couple of times over the past year. I had a flight delayed a couple of hours there also and spent an afternoon with a few other guys sitting in some bar there close to our gate. Even that was way crowded. I felt like our table was practically out in the terminal walkway. :crowded:

Yup, that sounds about right for DCA. It would be nice if they renovated their gate areas but it's such a relatively small airport that even closing one concourse would be shutting down a chunk of their capacity I'm guessing. You do get absolutely gorgeous views though on take offs and landings of the DC landmarks if you're sitting on the correct side of the plane!

Saturday, January 26th - 6:00am

DW and I had just about 5 hours of sleep before the alarm on my cell phone went off at 6am. This day was our Animal Kingdom day! The thought of visiting AK always relaxes me because it’s a park where I know we’ll have more than enough time to see and do everything we want to. And there’s always time to sit for a snack and enjoy the scenery. When I had planned this day out weeks before, I had thought that everyone else would want to sleep in a little with all of the traveling the day before. So I had planned to make a trip to the food court by myself to bring back some breakfast for everyone else. Well, it turned out that everyone woke up early without any prompting. So, we all left our room to grab some breakfast at Landscape of Flavors around 7:30am.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/88BD95F2-89F3-4181-8162-99B819469842-3103-00000106731A9023.jpg

I really liked LoF (is that even a DIS approved abbreviation? ;)). They have some interesting menu items to choose from. And there had plenty of space! During this trip, we had gotten in the habit of eating in this one corner adjacent to the Ink and Paint Shop where it was always empty. This morning I got one of their French toast dishes. The French toasts had a hint of Indian spices which I thought was an interesting combination of flavors that worked well. The kids got their Mickey Waffles. Once we finished our breakfasts, we drove to Animal Kingdom and parked after just a 10 minute drive. As we strolled towards the park entrance, the family who had parked next to us and now walking behind us joked that the best way for them to find their car at the end of the day would be to just follow us around all day and when we head back to our car, their car would be the one next to it!

We got in line once again at the RFID entrances. Actually there were about four lines for the RFID entries. The far left RFID line had two tour groups marked with those infamous flags. So naturally, we picked the far RIGHT line. And sure enough, our line moved about twice as fast the line with tour groups who were gumming up the entry process. I learned from my previous January trip that as long as you turn towards the opposite direction of where the tour groups are headed, everything would be fine. Once we got in, we walked all the way up to the entrance to Discovery Island where a rope held everyone back.

The Tree of Life always looks beautiful especially in the morning light.
http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5524_zpsb9d38fac.jpg

It was sort of refreshing to see an actual rope drop. :lmao: As soon as the rope dropped we walked over to Safari which was practically a walk-on . On our way there, a small group of Japanese tourists were being led by their tour guide who was an American and speaking what sounded to me as extremely fluent Japanese. I looked over to DW and said “That might be a job I want to do.” DW said "But you don't speak Japanese" to which I replied "Maybe for Koreans then? And I'll get paid to spend my days in Disney!" Although, my Korean has gotten very rusty over the past two decades so it may not be as easy as I think it is. DW looked at me with that “uh huh, suuuure” look and said “You’re not going to be carrying one of those little flags, are you?” :lmao:

Almost everyone that were in the front of the pack with us walked at a casual pace towards the Safari. Except for this one family who was going at a more frantic speed and weaving in and out of traffic with their double stroller – they cut me and DW off by shoving their giant stroller in front of us and we had to stop to avoid colliding into them. Sheesh. DW and I were commenting to each other that it really wasn’t necessary to be that aggressive for Safari. They must had been having flashbacks of the TSMM run at DHS that no longer exists. ;) Everyone heading there with us will be able to walk on the ride this early in the morning at rope drop.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5527_zps07b9fd53.jpg

We got on the last row of the Safari truck. The animals were out and about since it was still earlier in the morning. The baby and mother rhino were munching away their breakfast. A cheetah briefly sprinted across the top of its hill. And the male lion stood at the edge of it’s Pride Rock and gave us a large yawn. Giraffes were plentiful and so were the elephants. The kids loved the ride and DS couldn’t get enough of the animals. He was pointing and yelling out the name of the animals left and right.

Spending the entire day in the pool

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5545_zpsa7ca20b6.jpg

I really enjoy going on this ride first thing in the morning. Not just to avoid the lines and crowds later in the day, but it also gives us more opportunity to see the animals being active and moving about. The “savannah” always looks gorgeous this time of the day basking in the morning sun. Halfway through the ride, DD suddenly remembered the rickety old bridge from last year and asked with concern whether they still had the bridge. I told her yes, but that it would be okay. Just as I soon said that we reached the said bridge, and made it through with some extra bumps and being half tilted to the left. This was also the first time that we were on this ride with no Wilson on the radio and no storyline about trying to chase down the poachers and the little elephant. Disney decided to get rid of that element of the ride and add a zebra habitat where the little (fake) elephant and the poacher trucks used to be. I was kind of mixed about not having this story thread. I always thought that having a fake sculpture elephant at the end of the ride went against the rest of the attraction which was primarily made of real animals. Ok, there are still the ostrich eggs, termite mounds, and the upside down tree that may be less authentic. At the same time, not having to chase the poachers meant that the truck didn’t have to speed through the curves as it cut between the hot springs and geysers – and that was less exciting. Overall still a great and fun ride. I’m just counting the years until both kids are old enough to go on one of those special up and close safari tours that Disney offers at AK.

After we exited the ride, we entered the Pangani Forest Trail to look for some gorillas. When we entered the bird sanctuary portion of the trail, DFIL and the kids each grabbed one of those bird guides and became immersed in trying to find some of the birds. DD really enjoyed this activity. So we spent some extra time to let her explore while I stared at this yellow bird hanging upside down.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb403/dhyun474/Disney%20World%202013/IMG_5551_zps80c5a9d3.jpg

The gorillas were also on the move especially the young one (not a baby anymore) who was running around trying to engage its father to play with him. Very cute. I couldn’t get any good pictures out of this scene because they were located right behind the glass.

Once we finished, we strolled back to the main part of Africa to make a quick restroom stop. I’m always amazed at the level of detail that went into the theming of the buildings and atmosphere at Animal Kingdom. And I’m always finding something new I hadn’t seen before. We must have stood outside these restrooms across from Tusker House a bunch of times during our past trips, but had never noticed these wall posters until now.

One of these trips, we will take two days instead of one to explore all of AK ‘s little nooks. I also want to go through some of these shops.

I came to the conclusion a couple of trips ago (without any actual verification ;)) that the termite mounds fall in to the same category as the ostrich eggs since they appear exactly the same each time we go. The very first time I went on Safari years ago I really believed that they were all real. :goodvibes

I had an opportunity to tour Magic Kingdom solo while everyone else went back to the resort for some pool time. I was looking around Frontierland when it was almost time for the Celebrate a Drem Come True Parade so I grabbed a spot across from the shooting arcade. This turned out to be one of my favorite pictures from the parade. I think the four of them were wishing people happy unbirthdays to their left and right when I took this. I just love the expressions on Wendy and Alice! And, Wendy is catching some air in her excitement. :thumbsup2

It looks like a great morning. Even hitting the Safari first thing, it seems like I still never get to see the animals that active.

You want to be a tour guide??? In theory, it seems like a great idea... getting paid to be in the parks. But when you really thinkg about it, you're saying you want to be one of the most hated people on the DISboards! :lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

The thing is, you probably passed them when they got to the point where they had to unload the stroller and give it to the CMs. :lmao:

I would have to disappear from the DIS if I did become a tour guide. :lmao:

We had a stroller with us too but it's funny how having experienced Disney many times helps out. I knew exactly where the stroller depot was coming up on the queue so we got DS out of the stroller while still moving and handed the stroller to the CM without breaking stride! :lmao:

Kids just found these wedged deep in the front pouch of my backpack left over from our trip. I completely forgot that I had bought these for the plane trip back home. Never seen them eat their dinner so well! :lmao: They are now enjoying one each. Ahhh, it feels like we extended the magic just a little longer. :goodvibes

Received this in the mail today and seeing this made me jump on to their website to look at resort options and dream more about our trip for next year.

The funny thing is each time I see this particular envelope in the mailbox with a return address from Disney Destinations, I get so excited thinking that I'm receiving a PIN code or something. I get even more excited when I see the "See Ya Real Soon" written on the lip of the envelope. Then I find out it's merely a glorified postcard beckoning to book another trip without a discount. :lmao:

As if I wasn't already going through the Post-Disney Depression, the cold weather we've been having since coming home isn't helping!!

Love all of your AoA pictures! My nephews are huge Cars fans, so I think in a few years once my sister is ready to take them on their first trip to WDW (once they are tall enough for all the good rides!), that's where we're going to try and stay. I meant to make a visit to AoA during our trip, just so I could see it, but that never wound up happening.

I agree with you about wanting to take some extra time at Animal Kingdom during one of our trips to really take the time and look through at all the little touches they've put in to make the areas feel authentic.

I agree with you about our cold weather here the past few weeks. I'm ready for spring to get here ASAP!

I think your nephews will love AoA! The kids really seem to appreciate all that AoA has to offer.

I'm working up a plan for our trip next year (I know, I have a serious Disney problem since I'm already making plans for a trip that far away) where I'm going to try to squeeze in a couple of hours of solo tour time at night in Animal Kingdom taking pictures. :thumbsup2

Saturday January 26th - 10:00am

We walked backed down to Discovery Island and then to the right towards Camp Minnie and Mickey. We entered the round theater for the Festival of the Lion King. This is by far my favorite Disney live show. DW likes it too, but I think she has other shows ranked ahead of this one. The first time I watched it a couple of years ago my eyes were mostly trained on the 4 singers and the Disney Lion King characters like Simon, Pumba, and Simba. I think I really got the full effect of the show during my second viewing when I started paying closer attention to the supporting cast members and how much energy and enthusiasm they bring to the whole production. Their costumes are just outstanding as well. Even the folks on the stilts do an awesome job with keeping up with the beat. The music and songs are perfect. And to top it all off, you have a dude twirling some flames. AHHHHWESOME!

I don’t mind as much getting these tunes stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Humming Hakuna Matata is a good way to be strolling across AK. The kids loved the show. Here is what DS’s reviews were when I asked him of his thoughts on the show: “Singing was not good. Dancing was very good. Especially the monkeys!” And there you have it – a perspective from a 3 year old!

I ended up taking a ton of pictures during the show. So here's the slideshow!

Your FotLK pics came out gorgeous! You must have had really close seats too because they look like they were taken from the stage. :thumbsup2 I really love the Can You Feel the Love Tonight number, and the monkeys are always entertaining. DS's synopsis of the show was pretty funny. :rotfl: Definitely my favorite Disney World stage show!

Thanks! We were actually seated in the back portion of the Warthog section. I think maybe 2nd or 3rd from the back. I ended up using my semi-zoom lens to get these pictures. I think my favorite part is the Circle of Life performance near the end because everyone is involved.

Thank you! The last thing I read about the show in relation to the Avatar is that they will most likely move the venue of the show to Africa based on some zoning/utility paperwork submitted to the local government agency. You should definitely try it next time!

Disney Picture Post #6

I think this would be a view most of Le Cellier's fans are accustomed to. It's the view that has greeted me the last two times after we checked in with the hostesss at LC. The kids usually run off to the right to spend some time at the Kidcot Station while some of the adults mill around waiting for our table to open. Maybe it's the anticipation of the meal to come, but looking up and seeing this always seems to get me excited.

Saturday January 26th - 10:30am

We picked up DS’ stroller and started making our way back to Discovery Island. I don’t know how it happened, but before I knew it we were engulfed and walking in the middle of the pack of a two tour groups who were leaving the show as well. Not sure if any of you have ever experienced this. I found it very difficult to find a way out of this mass of people especially with a stroller and a 6 year old. It felt like I was encased in a gigantic Jello with no place to go! :lmao: The tour group came to a halt as soon as they crossed the bridge, and we took that opportunity to wedge ourselves free.

Encased in Tour Group Jello

We walked over to Flame Tree BBQ for our lunch and it was about 11:10am. DFIL took the kids to find a table – I asked him not to take the first pavilion but go waaaaay back and told him that he should be able to find a relatively crowdless one. DFIL and DW had the BBQ salad. I had the pork sandwich. DFIL did an awesome job of finding a table with a great view of the water and Everest.

As I sat down with the tray of food, I noted two ducks just standing three feet away, intently waiting for the next item of food that drops to the ground whether it was intentionally or not. It was a nice relaxing lunch, staring out over the water. As we were finishing our lunch, I left about 5 minutes early to grab some FPs for Dinosaur and the rest of the group headed into the Boneyard at 11:50.

Along with the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground, this one has always been a big hit with our kids. DS was so excited that as we were parking our stroller he leaped off and ran at full strength darting past all of us into the playground before any of us could shout “Wait”. I started chasing after him. When he entered the playground, he stopped, did a 360 spin as he looked around really quickly trying to figure out which way to go, then he spotted the stairs going up the net structure and flipped the turbo switch one more time running up the stairs.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8513/8496867571_9d2ecd8228_c.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/93364640@N04/8496867571/)

I finally caught up with him and told him he had to wait for the rest of the group. The kids first wanted to go to the dig site which the adults had no problem with since it’s well shaded and plenty of sitting space while the kids go digging for dinosaur bones with the bucket and shovels.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8252/8497973058_d806cc6f64_c.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/93364640@N04/8497973058/)

DD spent the next 20 minutes piling up a mound of sand and building a “volcano” with some help from DFIL. DS was just digging sand out from random locations until he unearthed the tip of a long bone. He got so excited and was proud of himself. I told him that he should dig out the rest of the bone which he did. I don’t think I realized this before, but on the speakers they play a “radio station” with a couple of DJs talking about dinosaurs and paleontology. One of the songs they played was “It’s the End of the World as We Know It” by REM – I’m guessing it’s a tongue in cheek reference to the extinction of the dinosaurs?

After watching the kids play in the dig site for awhile, it looked like we had time for only one excursion to Dinosaur for the adults. I sent DW and DFIL on their way and stayed with the kids. I like the ride but was okay with skipping it this time. The kids and I moved back to the main part of the playground where they found a set of three slides all originating from one climb.

Since I was by myself, I planted myself at the bottom of the slides, and the kids would run up the stairs and come down the slides. After a couple of times, they started playing tricks on me by each of them coming down a different slide. I would see DS pop out from the yellow slide and ask him where his sister was. DD would then quietly slide down the blue slide and sneak up behind me. They got a kick out of keeping me guessing. They also went up the giant net structure and down the big spiral slides as well. When DFIL and DW joined us back from the time travels and nearly avoiding becoming T-Rex bait, it was about 12:40pm. I asked DFIL what he thought of the ride having been on it before – he told me he couldn’t really remember much from the first time last year so basically everything was still new to him and the dinosaurs popping out still surprised him! I think I’ve been on that ride one too many times to know exactly where they pop up so it definitely diminishes the surprise factor.

I had to make another FP run to Expedition Everest, so I told DW to give the kids 5 more minutes then meet me at the entrance to the Finding Nemo Musical. I got our FPs for the time window I wanted starting at 2:30pm. When I got back to the entrance of the musical, I couldn’t find my family. I tried calling both DW and DFIL cell phones but no answer so I backtracked all the way to the Boneyard. I didn’t see DS’ stroller in the parking area. I figured DW probably took the long way around by going back to Discovery Island and the entrance to Dinoland before coming back uphill to the theater. So when I went back to the theater, I saw them coming up the path. We walked in the theater at 12:55pm and there were still plenty of seats (albeit to the side and edges) in the front rows so we grabbed our spots. I could tell DS was starting to get a little tired and sleepy but he was still distracted enough of the fleeting images of Nemo swimming through the bubbles at the sides of the theater.

I think the last time we had seen this show was over 4 years ago and before DS was born. So this was a big treat for him. And even though I’d seen it only once a long time ago, I still recognized the In the Big Blue World song mainly because it’s one of the songs I heard quite frequently whenever I was on hold with Disney Reservations on the phone! It’s a very fun show especially for the little ones.

It’s cute how they converted some of the famous lines from the movie into songs like “Fish Are Friends Not Food” and “Just Keep Swimming”. I’m not saying the tunes are Tony worthy, but they’re good enough to keep everyone entertained. DD once again was transfixed during the entire show. DS was able to stay awake during the whole time which says a lot about how much he enjoyed it.

Next Up: Everest and a bird show

Whenever I see a tour group, I tend to turn and run the other way screaming, so I fortunately have avoided getting stuck in between two of them!

You know, I'm not sure I've ever really looked in to the Honey I've Shrunk the Kids or Boneyard playground areas. I keep intending to do that on one of our trips, just to see them, but hasn't actually happened yet.

Great Finding Nemo pictures!

Had an interesting, fun, and eventful weekend. One of DW's cousins who lives in Northern VA got married on Saturday and we hosted DW's family at our house including my nephew and niece, ages 6 and 3. 4 kids running, laughing, yelling, and screaming all over the house. On Saturday morning, DS was pushing his cousin on his little Lightning Mcqueen car when he slipped, fell, and banged his lips against the a sharp edge of Mcqueen's trunk. DS was very upset over the amount of blood. There was a very small laceration right above his lip. DW and I took one look at it and knew that he would need at least one stitch. So while I took DD to her ballet class, DW took DS to the ED and got him fixed up with a dissolvable stitch. And when he got back home, he went right back to running and playing.

Later that day, as we were starting to get ready for the evening wedding, my brother in law realized that he forgot to pack his outfit for the wedding. With only one hour to go before we had to leave, I drove him to the mall. Within the hour he picked out an outfit and we raced back home. Then all went to the church and arrived with 15 minutes to spare!!

So as the bridal party was marching down the aisle to the typical classical music being played by a live brass qunitet, I was getting ready to settle into my seat expecting the usual processions. That's when the fanfare began to play for the bride's entrance and to my great delight I recognized the first few bars of the music to be......the fanfare/march music from the last scene of Star Wars (A New Hope) when Luke and Han marches down the throne room to receive their medals. All of the geeks and nerds in the crowd responded with quiet glee! :lmao: I thought that was cool. All was missing at the end of the bride's entrance was a wookie howl. :rotfl:

Then we drove over to the reception slightly up north of DC in Chevy Chase. On my way over there, I nearly careened into another car in the next lane by accident. Can I just say that I HATE driving through the multitude of circles in DC? Even after driving in DC for 5 years I still have trouble navigating through some of these road traps. I have almost never successfully navigated through a circle correctly the first time. Inevitably, I always end up on the wrong lane that takes me to the wrong street. So normally, when I plan my routes on Google Maps I avoid any routes that take me through a single circle. Did I mention I hate circles? Unfortunately, I did not have time to plan this particular route ahead of time.

Anyway, once we arrived at the reception hall I was once again pleasantly surprised to see a Famous Dave's BBQ catering truck parked in the back! YES! This wedding just keeps getting better and better. And when we walked in, on the stage was a full swing band set up! A swing band!! Been to my share of weddings but THAT was a first. The live music was great. The kids had a blast dancing and running around. I found out later that the bride's father plays trumpet (started during his Army days) and is a member of a couple of local swing bands. The band members whom a lot of them knew each other from their Army days made a promise awhile back that they would play at all of their kids' weddings. So cool.

They even had one of those photo booths that seems to be the trend for wedding receptions these days where guests can pick out props, masks, or hats and take pictures to go in the guestbook.

Anyway, a good time was had by all!

We were too unsure of the boneyard with DS last year at 2 years old, but I think he will really love it this year so I'm excited to give it a try. I just worry we won't be able to tear him away. :rotfl: The Nemo Musical pictures you got are just beautiful. The colors they use in that show are so vibrant!

Glad you had a fun weekend at the wedding, despite that mishap with DS's lip. :goodvibes

That was a nice morning at AK. You can never go wrong with Flame Tree. I love that place. It looks like the Boneyard was a fun break for the kids after lunch. We haven't spent any time there yet, but I'm sure we'll spend our fair share of time there in the future.

I'm glad that you had a good time at the wedding. I know my opinion of going to weddings usually isn't "that was fun." :rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

I'm such a big fan of Flame Tree that I haven't had a chance to branch out and try some of the other places to eat in AK. Maybe I can talk myself into trying something new next time but I seriously doubt it. :rotfl:

And yes, I'm usually not very excited about weddings either which was one of the reason I opted not to bring my DSLR with me. Boy, did I end up regretting that decision as I watched the kids dancing in front of the swing band. :sad2:

I think your DS will love the Boneyard just based on seeing how excited he was to play in the generic playground at Bonnet Creek. :) If he's like our kids, you'll have to plan for at least an hour at the Boneyard. Even then, we have trouble getting our kids to leave.

The colors they use at both FotLK and Nemo are so beautifully done. I really enjoyed taking pictures at both shows this trip!

Saturday, January 26th - 1:45pm

Once we exited the theater around 1:45pm,I thought this would be a good time for an ice cream break. Had to start using those snack credits on our dining plan! So we found a nice shaded bench along side the gift shop for the Dinosaur exit – I think it’s called Chester and Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures. We took a break in this exact same spot last year for an ice cream break. It’s tucked in and away from the crowds and very well shaded. Plus, the restrooms are just around the corner. And as a bonus, if you needed to fill up your gas tank you have access to this.

The kids and I got fruit bars, and DW and DFIL got their Mickey Bar fixes. We sat there for a good 20 minutes or so enjoying the breeze and the treats. DS wanted to go on the Triceratops Spin. DD wasn’t too excited about it. She actually told me that the ride was for little kids. She’s growing up I guess. But she was a good sport for her brother and the four of them went on while I watched from the bottom. DS told me he liked the ride afterwards but he thought it was too short. DD had been hoping to go on Primeval Whirl which is one of the rides she wanted to try last year but couldn’t because of the 48 inch height requirement. Needless to say, she did not grow 4 inches in less than a year, so had to put it off again for the next trip. Still don’t quite understand why that particular ride has such a tall height restriction but I’m going to guess that the ride is actually rougher than it looks.

Next, we walked over to EE to use our FPs. It was already 2:35pm, and I was planning on catching the 3pm Flights of Wonder Show to complete our trifecta of AK shows! We had never done all three shows in a single day. DFIL and myself went on first while the kids had fun watching the coaster drops from the viewing area to the side. DD briefly, and I mean very briefly, contemplated whether she wanted to try this one. One look at the drops and she was happy to just watch. Using our FPs we skipped ahead of the long lines to the front. I had been toying with the idea of attempting to capture some shots during the ride with my camera. But I couldn’t remember the sequence on this ride very well and whether the speed was such that I could hold on to the camera. So I took the camera with me but only snapped a couple of pictures when the ride comes to a momentary stop before changing directions.

I wasn’t as dizzy as I had been last year after getting off of it. DFIL loved this one. He couldn’t remember much from the last time he went on it so it was like riding it for the first time again! When we exited the ride, it was already 2:50pm. It didn’t look like we had enough time to have DW and DFIL go even with the FPs. So I pulled some more FPs so that we could come back later and let DW have a shot at it. I sent off the gang to the show while I attempted to see if I could find two people who I could give my FPs away too. I didn’t have much time and this was turning out to be a very difficult task. Most of the people entering the standby line were groups of 4. And then whenever I think I spot a couple approaching they would inevitably veer towards the FP lanes. I had to give up after 5 minutes because the show was about to begin. I briskly walked to theater and caught up with my family.

We walked into the Flights of Wonder stage just in time. The show began within a couple of minutes of us finding a side seat near the front. The low flybys that the birds do during the show are always fun and exciting for the kids.

And there’s of course the Bald Eagle. As soon as it made its appearance, DS started telling me that he wanted to see it fly like other birds. To his disappointment, the eagle stayed put.

DD’s hand shot up in the air when the host was looking for someone to hold a dollar bill for one of the birds to fetch but of course they were looking for an adult volunteer.

One of the kids in the audience got to throw a grape high in the air and watch a bird catch it with its beaks midair while flying. After the show was over, three trainers brought out some of the birds up close to the front edge of the stage where the kids can take a closer look. DD asked a question to the owl handler about the macaws that were sitting on the tree behind him and whether they could also imitate people’s speech which the answer was that those birds usually don’t do it as part of their natural behavior even if they are capable of doing so.

I got incredibly lucky with this one. Near the end of our AK day, all of the adults got one more chance to climb Everest. Having been on the ride once earlier in the day, I felt more confident and comfortable about having my camera out and taking pictures during the ride. So I set my shutter speed fast at continuous bursts and as always flash off. As we approached the final cave where the "frozen" Yeti resides, I brought up my camera. With the fast turns and drops, I couldn't bring the view finder to my eye level so I just aimed the camera in the general direction where I thought the Yeti ought to be. As soon as the strobe lights started going off, I held down the shutter button and the camera got off 8 shots as the train zoomed underneath the Yeti. 7 out of the 8 pictures turned out mostly black. But this last shot turned out to be completely in sync with the flashes from the strobe lights from the ride.

I don't get that height requirement for Primeval Whirl either. :confused3 I thought it may have something to do with the type of restraint system they use, but I don't really know. I hate those kinds of coasters anyway and avoid that one when I can! :rotfl:

Glad the kiddos enjoyed Flights of Wonder. :thumbsup2 I am a little freaked out by birds, but it is one thing we have never done at AK, so I might have to get over my phobia and try it out one of these days.

That Yeti picture is absolutely incredible!!! What a lucky shot!

Good call on the ice cream break. The last thing you want to do is let those snack credits go to waste.

Congratulations on your AK show domination! You really packed it in that day! :thumbsup2

That Yeti shot is awesome! :thumbsup2 That shot actually might be more intense than the actual "non-moving, strobe light lit, blink and you miss it" Yeti in the ride.

Mmmm, Mickey bars!!! :mickeybar

I don't get that height requirement for Primeval Whirl either. :confused3 I thought it may have something to do with the type of restraint system they use, but I don't really know. I hate those kinds of coasters anyway and avoid that one when I can! :rotfl:

A couple of the birds do a low fly by over the heads of the audience and depending on where you're seated, they could really whiz by you. I think if you park yourself in the rear side of the theater you should be okay. Also, the Tour Guide Joe character has a bird phobia as well but he manages to survive! ;)

Completely agree with you that this Yeti shot gives the false impression of a menacing presence in the ride when half the time people miss it entirely. I think it took me 3 rides before I could locate it!

And reading your PTR makes me want to go again sooner than next January! :goodvibes

The more I think I about it, that wedding is becoming one of my favorite weddings that I've attended. And the more I think about it, the more I'm kicking myself for not bringing the camera.

Saturday, January 26th - 3:30pm

It was about 3:30pm when we left the theater and it was time to find a place to camp out with some snacks along the parade route. I found a nice shaded spot near the bridge that connects Africa to Discovery Island by one of the kiosks selling Disney pins. The kids were getting hungry again especially after watching the family sitting next to us enjoying their popcorn. I ventured off to look for a popcorn stand never bothering to look what was being sold immediately to the left us us. Instead, I walked forward and across the parade route into Tusker House area and found a bakery. As I got in line, DW called me on the cell asking where I was. I told her I was in line at the bakery and she said there was a popcorn stand right next to us! So I backtracked, used our snack credits to get a couple of popcorns for the kids, and cinnamon almonds for the adults. By 4:15pm the parade finally reached to our section of the route and DD was ready for it. DS on the other hand fell asleep after finishing his snacks while sitting on DW’s lap.

The highlights of this parade I think are the animal “floats” and how creatively they are put together. The character interactions are always fun. They also have three families picked out to be the marshals of the parade riding on various floats. The first family was a dad with two kids. The kids were excitedly waving at the crowd but the dad had this expression that said “I really am not enjoying this!” or maybe it was “I’m not feeling so good in the sun and feel like throwing up!”. :rotfl2: He had a completely stoic expression staring blankly ahead of him and not a single wave. I have to assume that it was probably that he wasn’t feeling well. Usually when CMs go hunting for the marshals for the parade, I have read and heard that they look for families who appear to be having a whale of a time with lots of smiles. So he must have been excited to be on the parade especially if he agreed to it. Or maybe they were just wearing matching t-shirts? The rest of the parade was very enjoyable. A couple of the supporting CMs walked over to our sleeping DS and playfully asked him to wake up. I think DS briefly opened his eyes, gave the CM an evil eye, then went back to sleep.

Here are the pictures!

Awesome pictures of the parade! Seeing it for the first time this past trip, I really really loved it! It is so creative and the floats are just incredible. You got some really great photos of them too. Plus it's cool getting to see some of the more rare characters like Br'er Rabbit and Br'er Bear.

Too funny about the snacks. :rotfl: I'm a little curious as to how you at least missed the popcorn SMELL from the cart right next to you! I swear they are pumping out the smell from those carts with some kind of enhancing agent because every time I pass one I start drooling!! popcorn::

Nice pictures of the parade. I just wish that you would have included one of the less than impressed dad. :rotfl2:

We've still never managed to hang around AK long enough to see it, but it definitely does look like it is one of the better daytime parades in any of the parks.

I was hoping I had taken a snapshot of the guy's float from at least faraway but couldn't find it. :rotfl: I usually don't take close up shots of other visitors and families without their permission and given his expression I was afraid he would either yell at me or throw up on me if I had asked. :rotfl2:

The AK parade along with Celebrate a Dream Come True are our two favorite parades. Less focus on the characters and more on the floats and parade CMs. We love it.

I caught this view on my way back to rejoin my family in Fantasyland after making a FastPass run to BTMRR. I think it was around 9:30am. It was the first time I saw Rapunzel's tower across the river. Sort of has a surreal feel seeing her tower in the same shot as the Haunted Mansion and the Liberty Belle.
