AmEx Rewards for Car Rental

We finally made enough Am Ex reward points to get $150 off of a rental. Has anyone ever done this? Can you use the reward on a special rate rental? On line?

Any info would be appreciated.

Using AMEX points for car rentals is a terrible use of your points. $150 car rental certificate will cost you 15,000 points under the standard program. For 20,000 points, you can get 16 Southwest Rapid Rewards points, which gives you a free ticket anywhere Southwest flies, with almost no restrictions (other than a few blackout dates). This can be worth up to $500, depending on how you use it.
