Is it gone from all cruises or just this itinerary. I always enjoyed it and really missed it.

The late-night dessert buffet (usually on semi-formal night on a 7 night or longer cruise) was discontinued last Dec.

Why? Cutbacks? Seems every time I turn around, more things are missing.

Anyone have any details on why?

A lot of people here on the DIS have said it was not well attended or many people only went to look and not partake.
On my cruise in January we didn't even know about it. Yes, I know it was in the navigator, but who is actively looking for things to do at 11pm? My guess is not many people.
I wonder if it would work better if they did it at a different time. How cool would it be to have it set up right after lunch? Or on Castaway Cay?

No reason. But word of mouth says it wasn't well attended. By that time on the cruise (generally the second to last night at 11:00 pm) most people were pretty much done with eating everytime something was offered.

It was well attended when I went.

I think the biggest problem is that it wasn't really advertised. It was just listed under the evening snack section in tiny print. If they put it on the front page, or made an announcement during the show, more people would go.

To be honest, I always found the desserts very bland. They looked beautiful, and I took lots of photos, but they all tasted the same.

All the same, I feel disappointed that its gone.

We were told by our head waiter that it was discontinued because too many people attended and they could not accommodate everyone. They didn't advertise it in recent years because it got too full. Every cruise that we have been on in the past had very crowded dessert buffets. So, they didn't want to have something that everyone could not take part in. Anyway, that's what our head waiter said.

We just went on our first Disney cruise in July NYC to Canada.
I guess what you are talking about is different, but there was a buffet on Pirate Night. I scooted over to take pictures of the desserts before it opened and it was beautiful. We then waited until toward the end and had a few things. My daughter liked the little dessert cups (not sure what they were!) and the truffles in a clear plastic spoon!

It was very crowded and I wouldn't have waited in line for it....just too crazy!

There was a hot buffet as well with those crazy huge turkey legs (I'm in the minority, I guess...I can't stand to look at them!) as well as a crepe station, taco bar etc. Again, we waited until the end, so no line...really just more to check it out. We did like the make your own crepes and tacos.

So, whatever it was, they had it on the Magic but I wouldn't actually wait for it because it was crowded and cold (Canadian air at sea!!)

One thing to know...my mom went back to the room to watch the fireworks from our verandah.....I called room service explaining she was in the room because she was too cold and would they bring her a nice dessert.

I wasnt' sure what they would bring so I brought her a few things back from the buffet.

When we got to the room, they had brought her a large selection of what was at the buffet...nicer than what I had managed to bring!

And more than she needed to eat!

So, we all enjoyed yet another little treat!

I was impressed that they had extra and would bring it to her as I wasn't really specific when I called!

Any of the times we went to the buffet there was like no one there....in the end maybe 200-300 people which is not alot for a ship that can hold way more.

Most people we talked to skipped it or went to take pictures since anyone in second dining is way too full to eat more.

Its too late for young kids.

They had the desert buffet on our NYC-Bahamas cruise Jul28-Aug5. It was right after the fireworks in Topsiders. There was a huge line. I went to my room to change my shoes. (I had heels on from dinner and wanted to be comfortable for the rest of the night.) I changed my shoes in the room and then went back to the buffet and it was CLOSED! I missed it! It was only open for 10 minutes!

The dessert buffet being asked about here is the Chocolate Extravaganza that was held on the semi-formal night at 11:00 pm on cruises of 7 nights and longer. It isn't being offered any more.

Yes, there is a buffet on pirate night with a dessert service, but that's not what's being discussed.

We hardly ever attended because we didn't really like the desserts served. I don't need marshmallows and a chocolate fountain.

I agree, we never thought the desserts were that good. THe only thing I really liked was the chocolate fountain...but not after they started pre traying everything up and you got one of everything. Since i only wanted bananas and strawberries. It was a big hassle.

they had a dessert buffet on our Magic cruise in June in Lumiere's. I did not go because I already eat too much on the cruise.

Wow! I was on a magic cruise July 20 and there was no dessert buffet.

Seems like there is conflicting information out there.

They did not have the dessert buffet on the June 2nd Magic cruise. They had servers with trays of desserts in the atrium on semi-formal night but no buffet inside Lumiere's.

We went to dessert buffet on one of our early DCL cruises and were fairly disgusted with the way people were acting. The guy in front of me filled three plates. And when I say "filled" I mean exactly that. He took so many little slices of cheesecake that he basically re-built an entire cheesecake on his plate, then stacked another plate on top of that filled with bon bons and little chocolate bits. Then he drug his poor 8-year-old through the line behind him and had him hold a third plate, which he also filled to overflowing.

And all of this was sometime after 11pm or midnight. Seriously, what are you going to do with all that food that late at night? God knows I can destroy a dessert with the best of them, but when you disgust ME, you've definitely gone a step too far.

Aw, give the guy a break. Maybe he was sent there by his wife to get food for the whole family.

I don't mind that they got rid of the dessert buffet (well, maybe) but they definitely need to find a time and place in the schedule to get some use out of the chocolate fountains. Yummmm

I don't need them either. But dang, I like them! :rotfl:
