I was babysitting and heard the dad singing this to the baby:
Trot Trot to Boston, trot trot to Lynn, trot trot to the Charles River, don't fall in!!!
has anyone heard this?
First time for me, but I didn't grow up out here :D ......

and it's traditionally done while bouncing little one on your knee.. on the "don't fall in" you did the knee dip...
i haven't thought about that rhyme in a wicked long time!

Yep! The version I grew up with and do with my kids is a little different though...
Have a ride to Boston
Have a ride to Lynn
Be careful when you get there
You dont fall in!
And at the fall in part you drop them between your legs(holding them of course);) .

We always sang this song but a little different:
Rah Rah to Boston
Rah Rah to Lynn
Look out Little "child's name"
That you don't fall in!!
My girls LOVED this!!! They used to squeal with delight while I was dropping them through my knees!!

Ours was like figmentvi's....
Trot, trot to Boston, trot trot to Lynn,
Watch out Katie, you might fall in!!
However, growing up here, the Charles River one does make sense.

Since you say "don't fall in....", I think the only one that makes sense is the one where the river is mentioned. What else would someone be possibly falling in to??? LOL
(I'm living in MA now, but not "from here".... I should ask DH if he's ever heard this rhyme before).

Yes I have heard it.. many times.. my children too.. My mom used to sing it to them. but she never used the Charles River part... she would adapt it to them... something like this.. "watch out little girl that you don't fall in..

Our version from the North Shore was:
Cha Cha to Boston
Cha Cha to Lynn

You don't fall in!!
We also used to sing the Lynn, Lynn, city of sin song.

My girlfriend's mother is from England. Her mother taught her the same words.....Boston and Lynn. Evidently, they were cities near where she lived.
Hey Jenn. Can't believe you're so close and you sing the same words to a Katie too!!!

And I learned it
You wanna go to Boston?
You wanna go to Lynn?
Better watch out
or you might fall in.
