I am opening a tea room / gift shop in a few weeks and I am having the hardest time getting my stuff organized. I don't want to have to spend 2000.00 plus right now on point of sale software. I need help on coding my inventory for sale. My brain has quit working on me and I know there is a numbering system that people use to use before barcodes became the way. Can anyone help me?

Hmm, I'm not sure if this will help, but I used to manage a small gift shop years ago. The owners didn't have a real fancy system, just a plain old cash register. The register worked with categories. For instance, one category was t-shirts, since that was a major portion of sales. Another category was stationery, which included stickers, pens, and other stationery items. From there things get a bit foggy...I think another one might've been food, and another one encompassed ceramic-type things (but I can't remember the name of it). The price tags had just the price though, so the workers just had to be trained on what items were in what categories.

I think what I am searching for is an alphabetic numbering system. There is a simple one that people used years ago. You code your price tags...make the sale....write the info from the tags on the receipt.....from your copy you can then determine what the item was, when you bought it, what it cost you, etc.
Am I making any sense at all about this?

It may be better to make an excel spreadsheets with codes, and then make up a code system yourself.. or just wait for the cash for the POS software. ...
