View Full Version : How Not To Do Disney With A One Year Old - Update 4/17

Hello there friends. This TR may not be one that you've come accustomed to here on the DIS with smiling faces and happy and good times all around. This was the worst trip I've ever had to WDW but I still want to do a TR because this was my DS's first visit to the World and we did have some good times mixed in with the horrifying. So if you decide to join aboard, welcome and thank you. I will try to tell the story as I remember it and not include too many gory details.

Now that I've probably scared everyone off, let me say that this trip we have dreamed of for the last 6 years. It took us 5 years of infertility and treatments to finally get pregnant with our DS and each time we failed to get pregnant we took a trip to WDW as a consolation prize and dreamed of how wonderful it would be to go on a WDW trip as a family. Our DS turned a year old in December so we decided to take him in Feb of this year to celebrate his birthday and being a family. Little did we know how it would all turn out :sad2:

The Cast

The star of the show is my 14 month old son, Alex. He loves all things Mickey Mouse
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Alex%20Is%20One/Alex.jpg

Then there's me, the narrator of this train wreck, Carla. I'm a 30 year old first time mommy and my favorite character is Stitch. I love to quilt and sew and have a deep love and passion for all things Disney.
And DH is Chris. He's a 31 year old first time Daddy and I have to say his favorite character is Prince John from Robin Hood. He also loves all things Disney but I'm not sure how much after this trip.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/3.jpg

The dates for this trip were February 2nd - 11th but we wound up coming home early so this will be a pretty short TR. I'll get going more with it later. I hope to have my photopass pictures soon too.

Hi and thanks for coming over! :goodvibes
Aww well thanks. We did have some good times as you will see in the short time we were there. I'm sure we'll be back to make amends with the World in a few years.

I'm curious to hear what happened. We took my son at 14 months (and 10 months). Eating in restaurants was a definite challenge that's for sure.

DH and I woke up bright and early. 3:30am. We wanted to be packed and on the road by 4:30am. DH loaded the car the night before so we could just grab our last min items, Alex and hit the road.

Ready to go!!
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0068.jpg

Alex fell back asleep around 6:30am and then woke back up again around 8:00am so we stopped to eat breakfast at the Cracker Barrel in Tifton, GA
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0070.jpg

When we got back in the car Alex fell back asleep like a good boy
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0071.jpg

We did stop one more time so we could all use the rest room and stretch our legs but it wasn't long before we saw this
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0072.jpg

And no excitement from Alex :rotfl:
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0073.jpg

We couldn't check in to the Best Western until 3:00pm and since we arrived at 1:00pm we decided to head to DTD so we could have our little DIS meet with Betsy and her adorable little Stinkerbell

Here's Alex and I waiting
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/768f5721.jpg

He kept reaching for Cindy

And here's the DIS meet crew
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0074.jpg

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0075.jpg

We had a very good meal at Rainforest. I was nervous as to how Alex would handle the animatronics and storm during our meal but he did really well. He only got a little worried but other than that he was fine. I had the ribs to eat YUM! Not sure what DH had and Alex had fruit and mac n cheese.

After that it was time to check into the Best Western. I can say the room was huge and very nice but the people working there weren't very friendly. Alex was SO glad to have a space to roll around, crawl and play in once we finally got into our room!

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0080.jpg

And silly me dressed him in way too warm clothes for Florida (it was close to 80* that day) so I undressed him to let him cool off for a bit.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0082.jpg

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0084.jpg

And then the sumo match with Mickey started
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0087.jpg

Ready for bed!
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0092.jpg

We hit the sack early that night. I set up the PnP for Alex and it took me an hour to get him to sleep so by 8:00pm we were all sleeping soundly until Alex decided he wanted to sleep in the big bed with mommy and daddy around 11:00pm.

All in all, the drive down was good and our evening was very good. At least we were off to a good start :goodvibes

oh goodness. I was a little afraid my DS wouldn't do good eating out a ton but that wasn't our problem per say.

What a Cliff hanger!!! I am so sorry it wasnt all you hoped it would be!

 I won't leave you hanging for long. I"m gonna try to do this TR as fast as possible. Our trip was short so there's not much to tell but yeah, it was interesting to say the least. Definitely not one we will ever forget!

Oh we'll definitely be back. Just have to let the bad taste from this one wear off. I'm thinking we'll take Alex again for his 3rd birthday that way he's walking and talking and still free.

Hello! I am here through the good and the bad. Glad to hear there were at least some ups! Looks like the car ride went pretty well.

We have two of those Mickeys with the red jacket! Seth's grandparents didn't communicate what they got them, so we ended up with two....so one is mine now. He's so cute! :goodvibes

Oh gosh I hope you don't have any of the experience we did on your Oct trip! Most people have great trips with their babies so I'm sure yours will be fantastic. We just have bad luck :confused3

For better or for worse, I'm in! I still feel so bad (and a little guilty!) that y'all didn't have the same great experience we did. Getting sick on vacation is just the pits. Working around kids all my life I have a pretty tough immune system, so hopefully Paxton inherited my immunity and not his dads because I swear, DH catches everything!!

I'm glad he was so well behaved on the ride down. How long of a drive is it for y'all? It's nice that it doesn't seem to be too far. 13 hours is just waaaaaay too long for us to ever consider driving at least not until DS is quite a bit older and able to entertain himself better for long car trips!

:welcome: Aww don't be worried. Most people have a great time with their LO's on their trips. We just have bad luck  but yeah, hopefully you'll get some tips on things to avoid on your trip.

Aww don't feel guilty. I'm just glad y'all had a great trip! Hopefully you'll never experience what we did. I wouldn't wish a bad Disney trip on anyone. I usually have a very high immune system too. And Alex seems to have my immune system so far but I guess sometimes at certain times a year Disney is just a sespool of germs and it's hard to avoid getting sick. I've heard about a lot of ppl getting sick this February on their trips. It's just going around I suppose.

Thanks! It's only 6 hours so it's really easy for us (and cheaper) to drive. We've considered getting annual passes many times. I don't blame you for not wanting to drive from LA. That drive down the pan handle is the WORST. We did it once. Never ever again!

Day 2

We didn't do much on this day. It was Friday and this was the original day we were planning on driving down. We decided to go and check out the breakfast at the Best Western before checking out. It was ok I guess. I got some eggs, Chris had some eggs and pancakes and Alex had fruit and a Mickey waffle.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0094.jpg

The service was good and they loved talking to Alex and making him smile Once we were done with breakfast we decided to check out and we headed over to POFQ to see if we could check in early but our room wasn't ready yet. They went ahead and gave us our keys and room assignment though and said they would text us when the room was ready.

After the pin hut and walking around for a bit we decided to have lunch at EOS since we had never eaten there before and they had just opened so there was no line! Score!! Chris had the Italian, Alex had the grilled cheese (which he didn't like because it wasn't the bread he's used to) and I had a plain turkey sandwich.

It was easy to get on and off the trams and it's SO easy to fold and it's super light weight. Alex also LOVED it and falls asleep in it regularly still! We are getting rid of our other stroller since we love this one so much. I HIGHLY recommend it!! This was the one good thing I brought for this trip that actually worked out the way I expected it to.

After that we sat outside for a while and then finally decided to go back to the car and once we did Chris got the text for the room. We went and unpacked everything and got the room set up. I think we had dinner at Boatwright's that night. No pictures but it was DELICIOUS as usual!

Up next, day 3....our first day at the parks and the turn for the worst.....:headache:

Yay an update!

So I have a few comments/questions.

Can you not pick what Vinylmation you want? It’s like a surprise when you buy it??

What did you think of EoS? Or I SHOULD say what did CHRIS think?, Miss plain turkey. :rotfl2: I absolutely LOVE EoS! Such a shame that it just isn’t that kid-friendly I guess. That grilled cheese just wasn’t a plain enough grilled cheese for a toddler!

I REALLY wish they made that stroller in more “girly” colors. I would go with black but that just seems HOT.

I guess I’m a bit out of order, LOL, but who took the pic of you three at the pin traders?

I wish I could say I’m looking forward to actual PARK time but I hate that it started off bad!

There are ones that you can choose which one you want but there are others that are a surprise. It shows you which ones are in the collection but what's in the box is a surprise and there's always one they don't reveal that's supposed to be the best one of the set.

LOL Chris seemed to like it. My sandwich was ok. And yeah it's not toddler friendly at all.

They will probably come out with more colors I'd imagine. Write to the manufacturer before you find something else and ask them. I agree the black seems hot which is why we didn't get it.

A nice cast member took our pic at pin traders :)

Glad you liked EoS! We had it in Vegas, and I thought it was so good, and I am not a sandwich lover.

That stroller looks so handy.

Looks like he is giving a sour face as he is eating his fruit. So cute!

I love Vinylmations. I will admit I am addicted. Haven't gotten any in a while, cause there hasn't been any sets that I love, and Disney Store shipping to Canada has been insane for a while now. I think I have close to 30 of them though. :goodvibes

Yay, so glad you are back & updating!

So I got 2 great tips from this update: Paxton will not be sitting next to the wall in restaurants; Paxton will not be getting the grilled cheese from EOS. That sandwich does not look appealing at all, even to me!!

I just have to say, I saw a kid around the hospital today, a sibling of a patient I guess, and I kept thinking he looked so familiar he must have been a patient before at some time. Now that I'm seeing your pics, he looked just like Alex!!! I think that must be who I was thinking of every time I looked at this kid, I just couldn't place it. Just so you know, Alex has a twin in Louisiana!

Day 3 - aka 1st park day - aka....will we make it out alive????

It's now Saturday. Our first park day. When we woke up, all was fine. None of us really slept all that great and Alex was a little fussy but I figured he was just hungry so I sat him in the booster to eat some fruit while Chris and I finished getting ready. He seemed fine. We decided to go to the food court so Chris and I could eat and get Alex some milk. The milk in the cooler was sweating so I was a little worried about it but still gave it to Alex. He took about 3 sips of it and proceeded to vomit his peaches and what little milk he drank all over the place. Chris came over with our food at that point (anyone hungry? LOL) and saw the mess so he got a cleaning lady to come help us clean it up. She was an older lady and oh so sweet! Loved her. So we got it all cleaned up and then after a while Alex threw up a little bit again. Ugh! So we cleaned up again, went back to the room and changed Alex and decided to get in the car and head to MGM because we were meeting Becca there. Alex threw up a couple more times on the way over to the park so when we got there I called the Children's hospital here in Atlanta and they asked us all sorts of questions and said it sounded like he just had a stomach virus and we needed to keep him hydrated. If he kept that down then we needed to try and give him some bland food after 6 hours. So we got into the park and Alex fell asleep in the stroller as me and Becca walked around and Chris and James rode ST 3 or 4 times (he told me the line was long so he could ride more. I was so angry that he lied because there was so much I coulda done in that time he was riding over and over but passed up because I didn't want him to miss out on anything :headache: oh and I didn't even get to ride the new version of ST since I was taking care of Alex all day).

Here's Alex sleeping in the stroller as we were walking around

My poor sick baby :sad2:

Anyways, Chris and James finally decided they were done with the ride and were coming to meet up with me and Becca. We were in the Art of Disney pavilion and Mickey Mouse was out. Alex had woken up by now and was super whiny still. Once we found Chris and James we saw that Jake was out doing pictures so we stopped to meet him for Alex because he just LOVES that show!
He had some smiles for us even through all the sickies. Love this kid!!!

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0127.jpg

Then Alex got so fussy that we had to go back to the resort for a while. Alex napped for a good 2 or 3 hours while we all visited. Once he woke up he had some more milk (this time from Publix) and seemed to be doing ok so we decided to go back to the park since we had SciFi ADR's.
We managed to ride TGMR and Alex fell asleep again towards the end of the ride. He stayed asleep as we left. Poor little guy
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0128.jpg

Then it was about time for our dinner ADR. Here he is waiting for our table

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0130.jpg

Alex didn't throw up at this meal but he didn't want to eat the pasta we got him. He did eat about 1 and 1/2 cups of fruit that we had brought for him and he kept it down. He got SUPER fussy right around the time our dinner came out. I managed to get a couple of bites in me and went outside to push him around in the stroller. He didn't fall asleep this time but he was quiet thank God. Chris brought me out a milk shake Yum!!! Great dinner  I proceeded to have a little melt down outside of SciFi because I was so worried about Alex and scared we were going to have to go home and cut out trip short. I felt like such a horrible mommy!!! :sad1: I still get sad and want to cry about it every time I think about it. This was supposed to be the best trip ever and it was quickly becoming a nightmare.

Chris and James went and rode TSM while Becca and I went to find some more characters. We did manage to find Phineas and Ferb.

Here we are waiting in line to meet them
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0131.jpg

And here we are meeting them. I have to say, they are a bit creepy in person but Alex didn't seem to mind. I just think he was too sick to care

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0133.jpg

Day 4 - MK Day - aka, do we really want to do this again?

Well, the day started off with a smiling, silly haired baby

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0138.jpg

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0139.jpg

Today was MK day. I was cautiously optimistic about how Alex woke up that morning with how the day might go. We got dressed and headed over to MK for our CP Breakfast ADR.

Here we are on the Monorail, still seeming to be doing ok
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0141.jpg

We got into the park and had our picture taken in front of the castle PP style but I don't have that picture because I didn't buy the PP CD. So we get to CP and our table was ready relatively fast. We get inside, seated, placed our drink orders and some of the characters started to come around. First up, Tigger

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0142.jpg

Alex wanted to hide
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0143.jpg

AFter he left
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0144.jpg

Mommy and Alex
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0145.jpg

He started eating his fruit and all was still ok
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0146.jpg

I don't remember what we all had but I'm not a big breakfast person so I don't see all the hype behind the CP

Once we were done eating Pooh came by
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0147.jpg

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0148.jpg

Then Piglet. He seemed to like him the best
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0149.jpg

And now we're freaking out
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0153.jpg

And then there was Eeyore
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0154.jpg

Becca LOVES Eeyore

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0158.jpg

After we saw all the characters we headed out. I wasn't too impressed with the character interaction but Alex wasn't all smiles so I guess he scared them off. Once we left we decided to try for a picture in front of the castle with our camera but Alex just wasn't having it
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0161.jpg

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0162.jpg

I think after this we went and rode Peter Pan and IASW. He was all wide eyed for both. Then he fell asleep in his stroller so we walked around the shops on Main Street for a bit. Finally, we had to wake him up for his hair cut. He did really well and sat still for the whole thing while a little boy next to him screamed and tried to get out of his seat. I was a proud mama!

Day 4 continued

After his hair cut I *think* we went and road Pooh. He really seemed to enjoy this ride. Sorry, no pictures! After that we went and ate lunch at the QS in Tomorrowland (can't remember the name off the top of my head). Alex started to get crabby at this point. He did eat some of his fruit but I had to force feed him some gatorade to keep him hydrated. We decided to take a break after lunch.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0179.jpg

I think we decided not to go back to the park because we were going to be coming back on Friday (or so we thought at the time). We ate dinner at the POFQ food court. He seemed happy but still out of sorts.

After that Becca went home and we spent the rest of the evening in our room with our sick baby.

Up next - Tuesday, Day 5 - A GREAT day that ended with a bang! And not a good bang. :sad2:

Just read your TR to this point and I have to say, I am so sorry that things turned out poorly!

We just returned from a week-long trip to Barcelona in which our almost-two-year-old daughter was sick with a high fever and not sleeping for the last half of the trip! It was so worrying, first of all, and also so disappointing. I can completely identify with your disappointment on this trip.

I'm happy for you that there were some good moments, like the haircut, that you will remember with happiness!

Well, you made it to MK... that is something and Alex got a cute little hair cut. (was this his first?) I am sorry he still wasn't up to a full day. So you had dinner at the food court at POFQ. Was it good?

Thanks! That really stinks that your DD got sick on your Barcelona trip. It really is worrying and disappointing at the same time. And then you feel all guilty for being disappointed that the stupid illness is ruining your trip. Ugh! I'm sorry that you had to experience it too on vacation. It is no fun at all!

Yeah there definitely were a few choice moments that I'll look back on with fondness and I'm grateful for that!:goodvibes

Yes it was his first hair cut. Thanks! I was sorry he still wasn't up to a full day either but I wouldn't have been if I was sick like that too. It's a good thing he didn't have to walk anywhere. The POFQ Food court......it was ok going down. Not so good later on in the evening if you catch my drift.

I'm so glad his haircut went so well and he was such a good boy!!

I like Piglet too! Was that a cupcake on your table in one of the pics??

I'm glad y'all had a good morning/afternoon at MK at least!

The counter service in Tomorrowland is Cosmic Ray's. Did y'all eat inside? If so, what did Alex think of Sonny Eclipse? LOL

So sorry your lo was sick. When we went in 2010 for my sons 3rd birthday he actually got really sick the day before his 3rd bday and was so sick on his bday we had to go to the Centra Care clinic..his fever was almost 105 and he was throwing up, turns out he had an extreme case of strep throat. The long drive home to PA the next day was even worse!
I feel your pain!

Yeah it was. I put it was Alex's birthday on all of our ADR's. I was surprised they brought him a cup cake at breakfast lol

Thanks!

Oh he didn't really care about him. He wasn't feeling good at that point and was getting really angry at me for force feeding him gatorade.

Thanks. Oh my that is horrible!!! So sorry you had a similar experience. I actually forgot to bring Alex's thermometer so I don't know if he had an actual fever ever. By the time we got a thermometer for him he was back to normal temp. And driving back to PA from Orlando with a sick kid!? Ick!!!

My son's first trip to WDW was when he was 17 months old. I refer to that trip as the $4,000 first hair cut because that seemed to be the only thing that went right that vacation! So you're not alone. Trip #2 went much better :wizard:

We've had sick kids at Disney, too. On our first trip our kids were 1 and 5 and both got ear infections. On the second trip my then 3 year old got tonsillitis on my b-day. We had really good Dr.s at the Centra Care clinic and both girls recovered quickly.

I hope your next trip goes better!

You started your report! :yay: I kept checking and checking and checking ... and nothing. All this time, all I had to do was not check it for you to update?! Kidding.

I'm all caught up now. First of all, I am SO SORRY that Alex got sick. I know how heartbreaking it is to have a sick baby and feel completely helpless; I can only imagine how you were feeling since you had to go through those emotions at WDW!

I have a question. Do they provide those plastic table covers or did you bring those with you? We avoid plates when possible and I just wondered if I should be prepared.

Stinks that your LO was sick! I LOVE me some CHOA though! Did I mention I used to live in the ATL area, so I know all about them. GREAT healthcare system for kids! :lovestruc

No they don't provide them. I got them at BRU before we left for Disney. They're great and I use them locally too.

Yeah CHOA is so so so wonderful! The nurse I spoke to was so nice and calming. She really helped a lot. I'm glad we live as close as we do to it so if we ever needed to take Alex there we could.

Day 6 - aka the good, the bad, the ugly

Today was EPCOT!! I love this park so very much. I don't remember what we did for breakfast. But we got to the park bright and early. We had a Photopass picture taken (they're gone now) and then headed straight for SE.

Here we are enjoying the ride

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0188.jpg

Alex really seemed to like that ride and was doing good so far that day so I was hopeful for a good day. Then Chris decided that he wanted to ride TT while I waited in like at the Character Spot. Well, they opened the doors early so I made it almost all the way through without Chris there.

Then we walked around the big emporium store because mommy was in desperate need of some Tylenol (hmmmm this might be a bad sign). And once we came out on the other side we saw Baloo!!!! I have never seen him out before so I was excited. He was our first Vynalmation siggie since I forgot to take it through the Character Spot with me.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0209.jpg

So we decided to walk him around a bit. We saw Peter Pan on the way so I walked Alex around in circles while Chris went to get his autograph

We then decided to walk down into the World Showcase a bit so Alex could continue on with his nap. It was so empty since it wasn't open yet so it was nice.

We did get to eat. We gave Alex some Mac N Cheese that he was happily chowing down until some got stuck in his throat and triggered his currently sensitive gag reflex so we had another vomiting episode. Ugh! We got it all cleaned up and Chris and I finished eating and we headed out. Thank God there wasn't a ton of people in there for that.

Night Night
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r244/leger13/Disney%202012%20TR/IMG_0252.jpg

So.....we all fell asleep. And then I woke up to Chris hollaring my name in the bathroom. I thought I was dreaming at first. So I went in there to check on him and he was having a panic attack. Said he felt nauseous and bad stomach needed to come out the other way too. Ugh! So as I'm trying to calm him down and get him to breathe, I get dizzy and almost pass out. So I sat on the floor while I talked to him. He couldn't get control over his breathing so he had me call EMS. Chris went and laid on the bed while we waited on them to come. Good thing he did because while we were waiting I threw up. Once they arrived they check Chris, said everything looked fine to them. No temp or anything but he decided to go to the ER anyways. They also checked my temp since I had just thrown up and it was 103.5 or something crazy like that. I decided to stay at the resort with Alex. I called Becca and she came to my rescue. I thought I had the flu or something so I had her bring me some flu meds. She arrived at the resort around 1am. After she got there, we took my temp again, still the same, I took meds and told her I had to go to sleep. So she laid on the other bed while she waited for word from Chris. It was a nightmare!! I did wind up throwing up a few more times before she got to the resort too. Chris was convinced it was food poisoning but the hotel manager said if that was the case they'd have other calls about it from other rooms and they hadn't heard anything except from us. So I guess we got whatever Alex had, just way worse. Chris finally got back from the ER around 6am. Becca went and got his scripts filled and we made the decision to leave that day so we could get home and get to the doctor. I don't know how Chris did it but he drove us all the way to Tifton where his parents met us and drove us the rest of the way home. That was the longest drive home ever. Alex was good most of the way but he was whiny still. Every time he whined I tried to sooth him but it's so hard to take care of a baby when you can hardly keep your head up and eyes open.

Anyways, so there you have it. Our ONE good day turned really horrendous over night. I was so sad that we all got so sick and had to leave early but there were lots of good moments amongst the bad. We tried to make the best of it but once Chris and I got sick that was the end of the rope. I couldn't have done anything if we had stayed anyways.

How Not To Do Disney With A One Year Old. Ugh

I have had some one get sick each trip almost and it isn't fun... we fly though so we have always had to just ride it out with the sick person just staying in the room. ds was the this last trip.. with projectile and both ends (sorry tmi) He spent most of the day in the room.... then a couple days later dh said he had it ( I never witnessed him throwing up though) trip before that it was my mom in the middle of the night... but i think that was dehydration and heat. time before that it was dh the night before we were checking out and it was like non stop and violent all night. i was so scared that one of the rest of us would come down with it while on the flight.

so.. i know how bad it sucks... but also can appreciate how there can be a lot of good moments despite it.

What a bad ending to a trip! I can't believe your husband was well enough to drive. I can understand the dizziness. I once had a really bad stomach virus and passed out twice within a few minutes and had to go the ER. You probably both were really dehydrated. At least you were able to get home the next day. Did you get any money refunded?

WOW, Epcot was so empty. I am glad you got to enjoy some of that and got some great pics of Alex with the characters.

The picture with Baloo is awesome.

That was such a good idea to get vinylmation signed

Such a shame you all ended up getting sick.

I am glad you all made it home safely

I hope getting it all written out makes you feel better

Oh Jeez, I am so sorry!!:( What a disappointing way to end your trip. I hope after you got home, your stomachs settled down. Really how would you know if it was food poisoning or not? Maybe??

Oh, Carla, how awful. :( When I started reading the update, I was thinking to myself, "Well, that sounds like a nice day at Epcot, what could go wrong?" Then I got to the end! So so sorry that your trip had to end that way, especially after all of the planning and excitement. Hopefully whenever you take your re-do trip, it will be a MUCH better and more magical experience! Thanks for sharing, even though the last thing you probably wanted to do after a trip like that was share it again in a TR. It was nice to see that despite all of that, Alex had a few great moments in WDW!

such a crappy ending :( I'm really glad you have a friend like Becca that could come to your rescue. I was SHOCKED that Chris managed to drive (more than?) halfway home...yikes!

Hope your next trip is a MUCH, MUCH better experience!

Bless your heart!!!!! That absolutely sucks! I'm so glad that you were able to get to Tifton without any issues. And if it was food poisoning, then how would the hotel manager know? I mean, you didn't eat at the resort- you ate at a park restuarant. :confused3

Oh wow you finished! :goodvibes I'm so sorry to hear about you all getting so sick. That's just terrible. Thankfully you WERE within driving distance to home, though I can't even imagine how sad that drive home must have been. I hope you can take a do over trip.

How did Alex do at Coral Reef?

Only by 2 days. So we didn't miss out on a ton but MK and some ADR's. We skipped a lot of MK our first day because Alex was so sick and we kept saying "oh we'll be back on Friday". I'm so sorry you've had someone sick on all your trips. :sad2: So far it's only happened to us on two of our trips but this was the first time going with our son so I'm sure we'll have more sick trips in our future. Just hopefully not as bad as this. We would have stayed had me and DH not gotten sick as well. That was the real kicker.

Yeah I can't either. I was nervous letting him but he was certain he was ok. Ugh that stinks. Yeah we probably were dehydrated for sure. I don't think DH really needed to go to the ER but he tends to overreact a bit when he's not feeling well. Yes we got the last 2 nights refunded and they gave us a couple days worth of park tickets to use when we come back.

Thanks girl. Me too.

Thanks :) Don't usually see him out so I was so excited!

Thanks :)

Yeah it was :( Me too! I guess it did.....I don't know. I'm just trying to move past it and look forward to planning next year's trip.

Oh Jeez, I am so sorry!!:( What a disappointing way to end your trip. I hope after you got home, your stomachs settled down. Really how would you know if it was food poisoning or not? Maybe??

Thank you very much. It took me a few days to get back to full health but I eventually got there. I went to the doctor the day after we got home and got some meds. And yeah, there's absolutely no way to tell if it was food poisoning or not. I have told DH many times that I'm certain I caught whatever Alex had but he doesn't think so. I mean, come on, I had a fever and was throwing up. Same exact as Alex. Sheesh. I think DH was just stressed to the max and had an upset stomach which is probably why he had the panic attack.

Yeah IKR?? All day I was SO HAPPY to be having such a wonderful day finally. And then BAM. Ugh :( Thank you. I really hope that you are right. Aww thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it despite all the sickie talk haha. It was hard for me to relive everything while writing it but it was therapeutic in a way too. I'm not sure anyone will ever read another one of my TR's again lol!

OMG you have NO idea how thankful I was to have her there. I thanked her a million times. I just couldn't take care of myself, let alone Chris and Alex so I was so so so glad to have her there. She's the best! And yeah, that was rough for him but I'm thankful that he was able to do it. Thanks girl. I really hope so too. If it sucks again I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to convince Chris to go back.

Bless your heart!!!!! That absolutely sucks! I'm so glad that you were able to get to Tifton without any issues. And if it was food poisoning, then how would the hotel manager know? I mean, you didn't eat at the resort- you ate at a park restuarant. :confused3

Yeah that's what we kept wondering too but he said that if it was food poisoning that other guests would be having issues at the resort too. IDK. Either way it sucked LOL. I don't even know if it was food poisoning. All I know is that I felt like I was going to die

Thanks girl! Yeah I'm so glad that we were w/in driving distance even though that seemed like the longest drive home ever. Thank you. I do plan on it.

He did wonderfully! He had fun flerting with our waitress and making her/us laugh. He couldn't see the fish from where we were sitting though. Oh well.

I can't imagine doing all that planning - the PTR and everything - just to have your trip go like that. How was everyone feeling after being home for a day? Do you wish you'd stayed, maybe just had a relaxing day at the hotel? Or were you thrilled to get home (I'm sure that is it since who wants to be sick in an unfamiliar place?). What did your DH think of Disney - does he have enough happy memories to be okay with you planning another trip back?

I hope you stick around the DIS, maybe plan a trip for 2013?! :goodvibes

Yeah it was the pits. I felt SO guilty for planning the trip and then we all got so sick and were miserable on the trip. I felt like I forced it or something even though I know I couldn't have controlled what happened even if I had tried. By the time we got home DH was better. Alex was better. But I was still VERY sick. I still had a temp over 101. I think it was 103 when we got home. My Mom had made me some home made chicken noodle soup. I ate some of the broth and then puked it back up a few min later. I was so so so sad about our trip and having to leave early but omg I was SO happy to be home and have my Mommy around to take care of me. When I got sick I called my Mom and told her what was going on after DH went to the hospital and I bawled to her and said "I just want/need you to be here so bad." I just felt SO helpless. DH was at the ER and I couldn't go with him because I was so sick and someone had to stay with Alex. Ugh it was so awful. So I guess I was sad and happy to be home at the same time. DH has been flipping off the TV every time a Disney commercial comes on but I keep reminding him of ALL the very magical trips we've taken and he stops. I know he still loves it and he's totally on board for taking Alex for his birthday next year. We've already talked about what resort to stay at and all of that. We even thought about doing a Disney cruise too but we decided against that since everyone got so sick this time and that would be the absolute worst on a cruise. So we decided that would be better if we wait till Alex is in school or something. I need to change my ticker. We both LOVE Disney at Christmas time so I think we're both really looking forward to the next trip. I will definitely be staying around here. I want to read your TR and keep up with you and khertz. I've made some good new friends through this PTR and joining other TR's/PTR's so I'm not going anywhere. I've just been scarce lately. This year hasn't really been that great so far and we're still TTC baby #2 so I've been in my own little world.

I'm sad your trip turned out so poorly with everyone getting sick, but if you hadn't told me I would never know any differently - your pictures look great and everyone seems to be in good spirits!

Questions:
Did you do a crib or pack n play?
Where did you get your placemants (disposable I assume?)
How did you find the high chairs at the different restaurants? My son will be just 8 months, but those large wooden restaurant highchairs do NOT work well for him.
Did you find there were places in the parks where you could set your son down (grass?) where he could crawl around and stretch out?

Aww you're so sweet. Thank you. We did try to make the best of it.

We did take a Pack n Play. We tried to use it the first night but Alex refused to sleep in it. In the room the first night DH and I had a King sized bed so Alex slept in between us. In the room at Disney we had 2 queens so DH slept on one bed and I shared the other with Alex. We just had the hotel bring us one of those bed rails so Alex wouldn't fall off. The rail was strange and left a gap between the bed and the rail that Alex could still get into so I shoved extra pillows down in there and that seemed to solve the problem. He actually slept really well on the bed with us.

Place mats I got at Babies R Us. And yes they are disposable. Best invention ever! They sell them at Walmart and Target now but the packages at Babies R Us have more to a package. 18 I think when the ones at Walmart and Target only have 10.

The high chairs at counter service places were usually by the door where you walk in or close to where the tables are. They're all the plastic ones you see in my pictures. Not the big wooden ones that they have at regular restaurants. I really liked those high chairs. Maybe you could try getting one of those cart covers that also doubles as a high chair cover? The Disney high chairs aren't bad but maybe if he has a problem in those as well as the wooden ones that might help. Or maybe you could look into getting one of those traveling boosters that attach to the table. KWIM?

As far as places for Alex to get out and play or walk around....there really isn't a lot of places for young babies to do that unfortunately. Not a lot of places with just grass unless you're at EPCOT. Alex didn't seem to mind being mostly in his stroller though. He was in and out of it a ton between rides and meals. Do you have a baby bjorn or a carrier of sorts? Maybe you could take that along with you too since your son will only be 8 months to get him out of the stroller for a while some times. I did that with Alex on our Pensacola trip last year when he was 9 months old and he loved the carrier!
