Introductions and What's This TR All About?


For those of you who don't know me yet, I'm the Marv half of Marvali. I'm the Trip Planner of the group (okay, over-planner maybe) and the one who frequents the DIS Boards among other Disney sites, to gather as much information as I can to plan our trips. As you will see during this TR, those plans are set in stone and NEVER subject to change!!! :rolleyes1 I am also a very serious, no nonsense guy who is always reserved in my comments and very polite to everyone I know here on the DIS! :rolleyes: (.... and don't believe any of the lies that are sure to be posted here in response to that statement, by those claiming to know me.........) ;)

My DW of over 28 years is Alison. She is a middle school math teacher. She loves going to Disney, actually pretty much anywhere since she loves to travel, but doesn’t care anything about planning the details of the trip as long as we relax and have some family fun!

DS22 is Matthew. He has now graduated from college and is serving in the Navy. This trip would be our first without him along.

DS19 is Jonathan. He is currently living at home while taking classes at a local college.

DS15 is Andrew. He is now a 9th grader who plays soccer and runs cross country for the local High School.

We knew we would be heading back to Disney a few months later but very possibly without Matthew, so I purchased Annual Passes using our DVC discount for four of us, and I got Matthew a regular Disney ticket the day we arrived for the days he would be with us. I had hoped we could take our next trip to Disney just after school ended for multiple reasons. The absolute biggest reason was we were hoping when Matthew graduated from college he wouldn’t have to report to the Navy before we could take the trip, and he would be able to go with us. We knew this might be the last possible trip we could all take together as a family for a while and not knowing exactly when that might be we were hoping the timing would work out. As it turned out, the timing wasn't going to work out regardless, so this would be our first Disney trip without all of the family. :guilty:

Another benefit to an early trip is we are DVC members and the point rates are lower the first few days of June, so we could have saved some points to use later. Also, we would have made it while Star Wars weekends :darth: were still going on, and after reading some TRs here on the DIS about them, I knew it was something our family would enjoy experiencing. And last but certainly not least, the later into the summer you travel to Disney, the better the chances that you will deal with hotter temperatures and higher humidity levels, neither of which contributes anything of value to a pleasant trip. :headache:

The big barrier to our getting to make the trip when planned was a huge project at work. I knew that it would have to go perfectly from a scheduling standpoint for us to be able to leave when I hoped. Unfortunately as the project moved along, it became obvious that the schedule was going to slip later into June and we probably would not be able to go when hoped, so I made the early call and rescheduled the trip. The dates would now be Friday, July 29th until Sunday, August 7th due to other obligations we had during the summer. So much for avoiding the heat and humidity!!! :eek:

dinner was good i tried a new meatball receipe and it turned out way better than i have ever made before.

im hoping no gashes this year when i shave my head at least i am going to tell the barber before that they need to be careful.

im also in charge of all the volunteers for the event this year, so beside shaving my head i will also be making sure about 40 people are where they need to be and the special guests are taken care of.

Hey Marv- I am just trying to buy you some time on that update.

I had to reschedule this trip a couple of times because of work. When I got our final DVC reservations, we were still able to get a room at Old Key West. We had stayed there on a previous trip and really enjoyed it. This time I knew they had been doing extensive refurbishment at OKW, and we were anxious to see how much different it was. The other thing that is great about OKW is that the rooms are some of the largest of the DVC resorts, which gives us lots more room to spread out.

Every time we go to Orlando for a Disney trip, I try to figure out how I can squeeze in an extra day or two. This trip was no different as we drove part of the way on Thursday evening after I got off work. I didn’t want to push it too much, but I knew if we could get a little closer, we could arrive early enough that I could plan a good meal when we arrived, and maybe even squeeze in an extra day in a park on Friday night.

We got up Friday morning, checked out of our hotel near Macon, Georgia and headed out for the remainder of our drive to Orlando. Everything went smoothly and we were right on the schedule I had hoped to meet. :goodvibes Our first two nights would be at the Quality Suites, Lake Buena Vista, before moving into OKW on Sunday. This was a new location for us but I had wanted to try it as it came highly rated. We arrived early and after a little delay getting checked in (they were still cleaning the room) we got to our room and were very pleased. We had a two-room suite with a full kitchen. The separate bedroom had two queen beds, and the living room area had a sleeper sofa. I think this may become our standard off-site hotel in the future as it was very clean, roomy, and a great place for larger families for short or longer stays. :cloud9:

After quickly getting settled we headed to Downtown Disney for our 5:00pm dinner ADR at House of Blues. This was a new location for us to eat, and Jonathan had been the biggest proponent of giving it a try, but we were all really looking forward to this meal since the menu sounded very interesting. We arrived early at DTD, but it took a couple trips through the parking lot to find a spot to park. We knew we had some time before we had to check in for dinner, so we took some time to check out some of the stores along the way. We toured Disney’s Candy Cauldron, D Street where I actually spent some time checking out the Vinylmations for the first time, the Harley-Davidson store, and RIDEMAKERZ, which the boys really enjoyed.

Even with quick stops along the way, we arrived at House of Blues about 45 minutes early, so we checked out the Company Store. Of course we had to get our traditional salute to Kathy and Mark with some hat pics! This time, everyone got in on the action.

Funny that after taking all the pictures I noticed a sign that said no pictures allowed…………oops! :rolleyes1 I hoped there wasn’t any security around to get on my case, but I hear that is more likely at the Lego Store.

We still had 30 minutes until our ADR, but I figured that wasn’t too early to check in, and maybe we would get in early. Our plans were to eat and then head to DHS, so that would give us some extra time in the park, or allow us to head back to the room a little earlier. When I checked in the hostesses told us it would only be a few minutes, so I checked out the waiting area. I thought this abstract map of the world on the wall near the restrooms was very interesting.

Since we actually had our food around the time of our original ADR time, we were done early and on the way to DHS. I had to get this standard picture to mark our entry to the park, which was right at 6:00pm.

We had plenty of time to enjoy the park, but what would we try to do this late in the day? We didn’t really have any firm plans except for Star Tours. This had been closed for the update when we had been there before, so this was the first chance to try the new and improved version. We were in no hurry as we strolled along, so I stopped to take a picture you so often miss when hurrying around. This is one of those little touches the Imagineers put in for those who take the time to look up and around at their surroundings.

I don’t know if it was just a slow day at DHS, or the heat had run people off early, but the park wasn’t crowded and nobody seemed to be in a hurry to get anywhere in particular.

There wasn’t a line at The Great Movie Ride when we got there, and we hadn’t done this in a while, so we decided to take a ride. One of the key things we were looking to do this trip was seek out Hidden Mickey’s, so we planned to do a lot of the rides we don’t normally do as often. This time we got the gangster option on the ride, but came up empty on the HMs.

After we exited the Great Movie Ride we headed back towards Star Tours, but it was still shut down. After a quick discussion everyone decided they weren’t really interested in trying anything else, so we headed for the exit and an early evening at the hotel. We had plenty of days still ahead to enjoy, but little did we know this would become a frequent theme for the week.

Sometimes wandering around the park is a good way to end a travel day. I can't wait to see pictures of OKW. I haven't stayed there in a while so the refurb will be new to me.

There wasn’t a line at The Great Movie Ride when we got there, and we hadn’t done this in a while, so we decided to take a ride. One of the key things we were looking to do this trip was seek out Hidden Mickey’s, so we planned to do a lot of the rides we don’t normally do as often. This time we got the gangster option on the ride, but came up empty on the HMs.

After we exited the Great Movie Ride we headed back towards Star Tours, but it was still shut down. After a quick discussion everyone decided they weren’t really interested in trying anything else, so we headed for the exit and an early evening at the hotel. We had plenty of days still ahead to enjoy, but little did we know this would become a frequent theme for the week.

I do that all the time! I'm constantly nervous that the Disney Cops are going to bust me doing something I'm not supposed to do. At least in this case, you could plead your case by saying that you had no idea the sign was there until AFTER the pictures were taken. It's what I use all the time.

Sometimes wandering around the park is a good way to end a travel day. I can't wait to see pictures of OKW. I haven't stayed there in a while so the refurb will be new to me.Thanks Danielle! I truly didn't know the sign was there until after!!! Took lots of pictures of our room at OKW, so hopefully you will get to enjoy those soon!

Me too, I try to do whatever I can to tweak an extra day somewhere. A couple of trips ago, we lucked out and there was a snow storm back home! After an early evening back to the room from DHS, I knew we could easily get up, hit the free breakfast at the hotel, and make rope drop at Magic Kingdom the next morning. But when we got back to the hotel and discussed our plans nobody was really in the mood to get up super early and rush. I tried to explain to everyone the later we went the more we would be affected by the heat and crowds, but that didn't seem to matter. Well since we were still off-site and our car was the most available form of transportation for all of us, I couldn't get up and head into the park ahead of everyone, so rope drop the next morning was probably out of the question. I didn't even set the alarm clock, knowing I would normally wake up fairly early anyway without it.

The next morning I woke up and jumped in the shower and got the boys up to get ready. I knew it was best to let Alison sleep as long as possible, and that while the boys and I went to eat she could have free run of the shower and room to get ready. While Jonathan was in the shower, Andrew and I headed down for breakfast. This Quality Suites had a little more than just the typical Continental Breakfast fare, and it was pretty good as such hotel breakfasts go. There was definitely plenty of variety for everyone.

After everyone was dressed and suitably fed, we headed to the car and were off to MK. No need to rush now since we would definitely miss the 9:00am rope drop, but even without everyone rushing to get ready, would we at least come close anyway? The drive in was fairly uneventful. We were directed to our parking spot, but we were far enough away to know there were already quite a few people there ahead of us. We wouldn't have the benefit of Disney buses to drop us off close to the entrance this morning, but a tram soon came and dropped us at the TTC. As we exited the tram I noticed there was a long line down the ramp to the Monorail, so we opted to try and catch the Ferry Boats. At least it was a clear, perfect day for a ride across the lake.

As we approached the group waiting for the Ferry Boats one was just arriving to drop people off, although for some strange reason there weren’t very many on board. There was a large crowd already waiting, but I was pretty sure we wouldn't have a problem getting a spot on board the boat that had just docked. As we waited on the dock I spotted my first Hidden Mickey of the day!

We quickly boarded the boat and were soon underway! It was a beautiful day to take some pictures so I made my way with the camera to the railing at the front where I could get a good view of the monorail resorts surrounding the Seven Seas Lagoon.

As we approached the dock I really hadn’t noticed any monorails running, so I’m guessing they weren’t operating for some reason. I guess we made the correct choice for transportation.

Since we had a 12:00 ADR at The Plaza, we quickly made our way down Main Street. We arrived a little early so the boys headed into Tomorrowland to get some fastpasses for Space Mountain. While we waited to check in until closer to our ADR, I took the time to take a few pictures.

Of course, there are often things you don’t pay much attention to at Disney, even though they may be right in front of you. That is, of course, unless you have a reason to notice them. Since there was a trash can right in front of me, I had to get a picture. I found the emblem on the side to be very photogenic!!! I’m sure there is at least ONE DISfriend out there who can appreciate the “trashy” side of Disney………

It hadn’t been long enough since breakfast to get very hungry, so we all ate rather light. However, there is one favorite that is going to be ordered regardless.

This trip we had planned to focus on finding Hidden Mickeys. One of my favorites is at The Plaza, but I don’t think very many people have ever noticed it.

After we finished our meal I quickly got tired of wearing a heavy camera around my neck. It was just too hot and too many people to avoid, so I put it in our pack and pretty much left it there. We knew there was no need to rush around with a late start, but the main bulk of our trip was ahead of us, so we just enjoyed being at Disney. Of course we did ride some, but with longer wait times than I like to stand in when it is hot (or any other time for that matter) we collected these to shorten our wait times in line.

After we had enough of the park we headed back to the room and hit the pool and cooled off, then got something to eat at one of the nearby restaurants. Once we got back to the room we started getting everything we could together so we could check out quickly the next morning.

Sounds like a nice leisurely day !!I have never tried the Plaza but I always look at the menu and I like what I see !!Sooo one day !!.We enjoyed the 1 night in an off site hotel , would have been even better if it was a Torrential down pour the night we arrived !! The pools at the hotel were awesome , but had to wait till morning !! The breakfast was also GREAT and they had juice that was almost as good as Bomas !! I saw Judy going up for more and more and more !!

It is a great place to grab a light lunch at MK that isn't the typical burger/chicken fingers. They have a good selection and the food is pretty good, plus it is a sit-down that you can book an ADR for.

And to be honest, there are a few CS places at the MK which I really like, so it always seems that I don't to get eat at all the places I want to eat at anyway. :goodvibes

Interesting thought. To be fair, Disneyland Paris has always enforced the return time and there the window is only 30 minutes. And we never were bothered by that. It has the result that FP does not run out as quickly as it does at WDW. And I think this might be one side effect which would be good. If people actually look whether the return time fits for them it might lead to less FPs being taken in the early hours of the morning.

Well I'm glad there are still plenty of choices where Katharina can enjoy the food too! That wouldn't be any fun if she couldn't! I guess we never get to eat at ALL the places we would like to! :)

Yes, I know it most definitely has to do with X-Pass. And the more I hear about X-Pass, the less I like it. :sad2:I can see a lot of people who know how to tour the parks passing on FPs with them enforcing the window. It is going to be difficult finding a window that is just perfect so you either don't have to stand around and waste an hour waiting to ride, or being at the other side of the park and having to run back just to make your FP window! :headache:

As for the X-pass, I guess Universal must be making a lot of money off of theirs if Disney is wanting to copy it, but I don't know how. We plan to spend two or three days at Universal on our next trip, but the X-pass isn't even an option. Why spend money on something that doesn't even get you into the most popular rides. That would be the only incentive to me. I guess if they are making money, there are a lot of people who don't realize what they are getting when they buy them. :confused3

Seems like the monorail hasn't been too reliable lately. I think it was down at times over the summer due to maintenance?

Nicely done! The Plaza and 50's PT make the best shakes I think.

After we finished our meal I quickly got tired of wearing a heavy camera around my neck. It was just too hot and too many people to avoid, so I put it in our pack and pretty much left it there. We knew there was no need to rush around with a late start, but the main bulk of our trip was ahead of us, so we just enjoyed being at Disney. Of course we did ride some, but with longer wait times than I like to stand in when it is hot (or any other time for that matter) we collected these to shorten our wait times in line.

I have read all the Jim Hill articles on the issue - and besides that I don't like his rather condescending tone at all - in his recent article (http://jimhillmedia.com/editor_in_chief1/b/jim_hill/archive/2012/03/04/how-xpass-plans-on-servicing-resort-guests-as-well-as-disney-world-s-day-visitors.aspx) he talks about how they plan to change the East Rose Garden at the hub into a parade/firework viewing area for 1200 people. I don't think that this will be a great addition.

I don't necessarily believe that it will make touring the parks really awful, but I don't like that they spend 1 billion dollars on this while they have huge maintenance issues at Splash Mountain and haven't build a new E-ticket ride since Soarin.

I also don't like all this personalization of everything which X-Pass is supposed to bring around. I don't think there is anything special if a computer uses my name to make Peter Pan say "Welcome to Neverland Magdalene". :confused3

But when we got back to the hotel and discussed our plans nobody was really in the mood to get up super early and rush. I tried to explain to everyone the later we went the more we would be affected by the heat and crowds, but that didn't seem to matter.

As we approached the dock I really hadn’t noticed any monorails running, so I’m guessing they weren’t operating for some reason. I guess we made the correct choice for transportation.

Looks like a nice warmup day at MK. How hard was it not to abide by the unwritten DIS rules of hitting Rope Drop?

I'm impressed with the FP collection, and even more with the Plaza Hidden Mickey! Nice work!At this stage of the trip, it wasn't too bad! Between having just been at New Years, and knowing we had multiple days during the trip at each park, we pretty much decided as long as we made rope drop once at each park we would have a chance to enjoy everything we wanted to do. I guess another benefit of having those APs in hand! :cool1:

Good work collecting fastpasses.Yeah, we were definitely cutting that one close. I guess the good thing is we did have breakfast fairly early in that scenario, so we were still able to enjoy The Plaza....but close enough to the time to cut down on the order of a couple of growing teenage boys.... :banana:

Chapter 3 – Let's Get Moving.....to OKW!



My goal for moving day was to arrive at OKW around 10:00am. Hopefully our room would be ready and we could move right in and then head to AK in time to enjoy some of the park before our 5:15 Dinner ADR at Yak & Yeti. Our morning routine was much the same as the day before; I got up early and got ready, then got the boys started so we could head down to breakfast while Alison got ready to go. Andrew and I headed out to breakfast, and we were soon joined by Jonathan.

I headed back to the room to brush my teeth and finish closing everything up, while Alison went to join the boys. The boys made it back to the room and quickly got the rest of their stuff together. We started taking things to the car as Alison returned to brush her teeth and pack her final bag. Everything was moving right on schedule! With one final check of the room, we loaded the final items in the car and I walked to the lobby to check out about 9:45.

Another appealing thing about the location of our hotel was we were only about 2 and a half miles from OKW. At the end of the street we were on was the entrance to the street that has all the DTD hotels, and then you were at DTD. For those who don’t know where OKW is located, SSR is just across the water from DTD and OKW is just beyond SSR on the same road. I drove up to the guard shack of OKW and got those beloved words that let you know you have fully arrived in the World of Disney…….”Welcome Home!” I love to hear that every time, and now it truly felt like our vacation had begun. This had been a much anticipated day for lots of reasons, and I have to admit the excitement of what was to come hit me completely then. :goodvibes

I quickly parked the car near the lobby so we could check in, and we all walked in just at 10:00am. I have to admit I didn’t really look at the exact moment, but I know it was within a minute or two either way based on what time we got out of the car! Perfect plan…..perfect execution. :banana: Sadly for some they were having to leave and were checking out, but we quickly had a CM assisting us. I had done the online check-in and everything was ready and waiting. Check-in went smoothly and our room was ready for us. :woohoo: Turned out we were in Building 53, which was one building closer to the bus stop than on our previous stay at OKW, so I knew exactly where to go.

Jonathan and Drew had asked before the trip if we could do a water park on this trip. I had researched and found out that with our DVC discount, we could get a Water Park Annual Pass for approximately the same price as two day passes, and since we obviously return often to Disney as DVC members, we knew we could put them to good use. As we were leaving the lobby I decided to ask if we could purchase Water Park Annual Passes and was told we could, so I figured one more thing we could get out of the way.

With Water Park APs in hand we headed back to the car and off to our room. My family has been on enough of these trips now that they know pictures are in order when we enter our room for the first time, so as they gathered some of the luggage to take in, I headed off with my hands full……..and the camera. I opened the door and dropped what I had just inside, and began to take pictures while I waited on the rest of the family to arrive. We were in a one-bedroom villa.

And the other feature we love about having at least a one-bedroom villa at a DVC resort……..a laundry room. It is a great way to keep from having to pack as much stuff as you can wash during your stay.

After getting everything packed and put away for our stay, we decided to relax until we had to head to AK for our dinner ADR. I decided to put the time to use and head to the Super Target and stock up with items we would need for the week. I was wondering where I might find some additional items not typically found in a grocery store. After all, we didn’t want to spend all this time at the villa and let the poor blender go deprived of attention. :drinking1 Luckily the place I was looking for was in another section of the same shopping center where the Super Target was located, so problem solved……….

What a beautiful resort OKW is, the decor is so beachy and fun. Though that wall applique Tink looks like it may have been left behind by some other guest, right? The jacuzzi looks nice, probably very soothing for someone eh, um, of your age. Tell me, do you apply the Bengay ointment before or after your soak in the tub to soothe those sore old muscles?:angel: (I think I'm going to sign all of my comments on your TR with that angel smilie, lest you forget that I am indeed an angel)

Yes, the AP let's you "park hop" the water parks, and the boys had a hard time pulling themselves away when they got there too! It gave them some variety though.

We really like OKW, but then we have liked all the DVC resorts so far. Something for everyone! And that Tink was like a card that was slipped behind the picture, hanging from the top of it.....so I don't know if it was done by Mousekeeping, part of the new "decor" or a guest left it behind!

We skip those now because it is a waste of money to just use it for the lazy river the whole time we are there.The lazy river is where I spent most of my time, but the boys really enjoyed it and I tried a few other slides also, so I think by the time we go back and use them a couple more times we will have gotten good use from the passes for sure!

My favourite resort, your pictures are making me so homesick!!!

We always do what you did, hoping that our room is ready, which it usually is, then head out to get some "stuff" to fill the empty fridge and cupboards.

And that tub ... makes for a nice thing to pass the time during a rainstorm! :love:

Of course, my personal favorite is anything that comes out of a blender and can be concealed in a resort mug. :thumbsup2

Thanks for all those OKW pictures. I used to think it was the least attractive DVC property. But the new colours work very well. And I like the hardwood floors they have now. I prefer that to carpet.

I am still not sure whether I like how spread out the resort is. Katharina and I took a long bus tour through there in October and it seemed to take ages. I guess it is best for people with cars.

I guess it is best for people with cars.I guess it WOULD have a different appeal based on whether or not you had a car. I tend to love the DVC resorts where I can park close to the room. One of the benefits of having the underneath parking at Kidani with the elevators nearby. Might be why I like SSR also that a lot of people don't always give the highest marks to.

I also like that fact that there is plenty of sidewalks and space to get in a good walk if you want to. You can never get in enough walking when you're at Disney......... :goodvibes

Chapter 4 – AK for a Dinner DISmeet!


After getting all the shopping done and everything settled in for the rest of our trip, we relaxed for a little while and then got ready to head out to AK for our dinner ADR and a much anticipated DISmeet with Jenbear and her travelling friend Stitch. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 I made sure I brushed my teeth before heading out the door. Just kidding; I put that in here just for Molly!!! (although I MAY have... :confused3 ) The weather was not looking very promising, and I hoped it wouldn’t put a “damper” on our evening. We decided to drive instead of waiting on a bus to make sure we made it in plenty of time.

The parking lot at AK was rather empty this late in the day, but they were parking the newly arriving cars in what seemed like a very far away section of the lot. I decided to see if I could find a spot closer to the entrance……..and the next thing I know, we are heading towards the exit. :confused:

Okay, let’s try this again. :drive: So I drive around and am soon back at the parking lot attendant we had just seen moments before. Wisely I went on the other side of the booth and put down the window so Alison could talk to her this time. I’m pretty sure she didn’t recognize me sitting on the other side……… :duck:

This time I just pulled in the next available spot where they were parking everyone, :teacher: and after we made sure we knew which row we were parked on, we quickly loaded into a tram and were on our way. The sky was very cloudy as we got off at the entrance.

We entered the park and with plenty of time until our 5:15 ADR at Yak & Yeti, we took our time so we didn’t arrive too early. Didn’t want Jenbear thinking I was an overzealous fan who couldn’t wait to meet one of his DISboard idols. :blush: (Okay, nobody is allowed to tell her that…….ROSIE I know you and revealing embarrassing secrets so especially you!)

We actually arrived at Yak & Yeti just before 5:00 and I stepped inside to see if Jen and Stitch might be inside. They weren’t there yet so I went back outside with the rest of the family. We stood there for a few minutes and then decided to go inside and check in so we could be seated whenever they arrived.

We decided with the humidity we would wait inside where it was a little cooler. A couple of minutes later I looked out and there was Jen and Stitch, looking around trying to find us. I walked out and greeted them and after Jen introduced me to Stitch, we headed inside and continued the introductions. We were seated immediately and of course Jen, being the talkative person she is, soon took over the conversation. :rolleyes1 Just kidding Jen of course, but like so many times with DISers, we all quickly began to find common things to talk about. Alison and Stitch found out they were both school teachers, and of course there was a lot of talk about some of you who are reading along with my TR……..and yes it was all good (mostly). :goodvibes

We settled in and decided on our orders. Jonathan and Andrew had been well versed on the sign Jenbear is famous for………

After the meal Jen and Stitch were headed off to do other things, but we knew we would see them again during the week as we planned to meet later. It wasn’t very long until closing and the boys wanted to at least get in a few rides. Of course we had to head to Expedition Everest. The boys ran ahead of us and by the time Alison and I got there, they were coming out of the exit and we went back in with them and rode. After the ride Alison and I decided to look around in the gift shop. The boys wanted to ride EE again so they headed off without us. We soon headed out side and found a location to watch for the boys and I took a few pictures.

As soon as they finished one ride they went right back into the line and rode again. In the final 30 minutes before the park closed, they were able to ride Expedition Everest six times!!! :banana:

After their sixth straight ride the boys had enough and we headed for the exit and back to OKW to relax.......... Seems like a good time to try out that blender!!! ;)

Great update. Your food looks amazing. We ate there in December but my DH and I did not love our meals. DS did! Plus it was lunch, so we were truly too stuffed for dessert. But I have to try those fried wontons!

Great update. Your food looks amazing. We ate there in December but my DH and I did not love our meals. DS did! Plus it was lunch, so we were truly too stuffed for dessert. But I have to try those fried wontons!

Next time in Charlotte, Baoding is close to where I work and JoJo Bistro is in between work and home sorta. No reservations but Baoding is small but early lunch has always been good. JoJo is bigger and a bit louder but time it right and no wait.

Sorry I haven't been around much lately! It has been a very busy few weeks! First, last Monday was a monumental birthday for someone! Not mentioning any names, but HER parents called to tell me they wanted to come over last Sunday and surprise HER with a celebration. So, since it was supposed to be a surprise, it was up to me and the boys to get everything cleaned up and ready for their arrival......without her catching on. (well, as much as you can get help from teenage boys...) We did manage to pull it all off. I had hoped to post some pictures, but I used my new little digital camera and somewhere in all the cleaning up.......I'm not sure where the cable to download the pictures to the computer has gotten to........ :confused3

In other family news, Drew has moved up from the JV soccer team at his HS to the Varsity in the past couple of weeks. That means more soccer games and later game times. This past week it was soccer game Monday night, Scouts Tuesday night, Soccer again Wednesday night, and then getting everything ready for this weekend when the soccer team participated in a tournament out of town!!! :eek:

It has been a very busy and tiring few weeks, even without all the extra overtime at work with the big project I'm working on! I feel like I haven't had much sleep at all the past few weeks, and especially this weekend. But still, every bit of it was worth it! :woohoo:

I guess the good news for the family is that it is spring break for Drew and Alison, so they can get caught up on some rest. Sadly, not spring break for me at work......... :sad2:

Work has been insane since the beginning of March, then the boss and wife both ended up in the hospital and I was spending time there and then at their apartment, then my son got engaged and then we went to Florida. I'm finally coming up for air (as can be seen by the fact I did FOUR updates to my TR today).

Chapter5 – Rope Drop at Epcot????



Monday, August 1st was our first morning on Disney property. I was hoping to finally make rope drop. Jonathan and Andrew were going to join me, while Alison decided to continue enjoying her restful vacation and join us later. The three of us quickly got dressed, ate and headed out to the bus stop. After a short wait for an Epcot bus to show up, we were soon on our way.

We didn’t quite make rope drop, but we walked through the gates just before they dropped the rope up ahead of us to start letting people invade the park. Missed it by thaattt much!!! The first place we headed was towards Soarin’ to ride and grab a set of fastpasses for later.

After Soarin’ we headed across Future World to Test Track and grabbed a set of FPs. We then headed over to Mission Space where the line for the Orange side was still fairly short. We were focused on finding more Hidden Mickey’s and when we got done on Mission Space we spotted this one in the area where they have the games and “Mission Control” area.

As we were leaving MS Alison texted that she was entering the park. We got back to the area just behind Spaceship Earth and met her. We had a little while before our late lunch ADR at Le Cellier, so the boys decided they wanted to spend some time in Innoventions West. Alison decided to just hang out in the comfy chairs while the boys roamed around and did some of the activities. I decided to walk and explore a little.

When I got to the area where the Fire Truck is located I decided to check it out a little. As I walked over to the backside of the fire truck I found a display with different patches from various Fire Departments, and then a display that you could search for a specific Fire Department.

I know my buddy Dan (FauntleroyFAN07) does some work with a local Fire Department where he lives, and has a lot of family that work in the FD. I texted him to find out which specific FD it was to see if they had the patch. Dan texted me back fairly quickly and indeed they had the patch. Dan informed me that his BIL was the one who provided the patch for Disney to use in their display on a previous trip.

I eventually worked my way around and back to the area where we entered Innoventions. Alison joined me as we headed around the loop again to locate the boys so we could head towards World Showcase for our LeCellier ADR. We arrived at LeCellier a little early and checked in hoping to get in early. We had to wait a few minutes to check in, and then they sent us down.

While we were waiting in the lobby the CMs were entertaining all the people waiting asking Disney trivia. The boys participated and got the answer correct a number of times. While I was waiting I found another HM.

After what seemed like an extremely long time to get seated, with a number of people coming in after us being seated ahead of us, I asked the CMs what was taking so long. For some reason they had messed up and should have seated us a lot sooner, so they quickly worked to rectify the situation and get us a table. Since the last time we ate at LeCellier they had changed dinner to signature dining, so we decided to go with lunch this trip. We had a little more flexibility on what we could order this time since we were previously on the DDP.

It was already getting really hot, so after finishing lunch we decided to use our FPs and head back to the room to cool off and hit the pool. Since we only had three Soarin’ FPs from earlier I opted to let Alison ride with the boys and I went to ride The Land and search for some more Hidden Mickey’s.

We headed back to the room where the boys wanted to go to Community Hall, so Alison and I headed to the pool. For the first time this trip I found out the pool wasn’t going to be much relief from the heat. It had been hot for so many days now in Florida that the pool water was quite warm. Eventually Drew was tired of Community Hall and wanted to go to a water park. Jonathan decided he wanted to hang around the resort so Alison and I headed off with Drew for an afternoon at Typhoon Lagoon. While Drew headed off to ride a lot of the slides, Alison and I just basically relaxed at the wave pool and the lazy river, but at least I finally got cooled off. It was going to be a long, hot week.

Since we only had three Soarin’ FPs from earlier I opted to let Alison ride with the boys and I went to ride The Land and search for some more Hidden Mickey’s.

One of the many Hidden Mickey’s and the only one I was able to get a picture of this time through the ride. But I spotted quite a few more that I was better prepared to capture later in the trip.

Jonathan decided he wanted to hang around the resort so Alison and I headed off with Drew for an afternoon at Typhoon Lagoon. While Drew headed off to ride a lot of the slides, Alison and I just basically relaxed at the wave pool and the lazy river, but at least I finally got cooled off. It was going to be a long, hot week.


I have spent more time at BB due to the conventions usually having the day there since TL is on shut down.

Ooo, my wife would not have taken kindly to being passed over for seating at Le Cellier....she still holds a grudge against Sanaa for this same thing happening to us in '09.
