View Full Version : New JCP catalog and pricing

I thought for sure I would find a thread already about this.

I got the new JCP catalog in the mail yesterday. I was already skeptical about their new pricing and the new catalog confirms my concerns.

I had read they were going to lower their prices by 40% for new everyday low prices. That doesn't even seem possible, and apparently its not.

I do all of my shopping for DS13 and DH at JCP and Kohls. I do really well with their coupons and sales.

The catalog showed the following items that I would typically buy for my DS13: Nike shoes $75, Youth NFL Jersery $40, Arizona Boys Jeans Special February Only price $17. The jersey and the shoes are regular prices. The jeans are definitely not 40% off, and that $17 is not even an everyday price, its a February special price.

I am very disappointed...with sales and coupons I could get the items much cheaper. I guess those days are gone :(

Anyone else get their catalog?

I got the catalog but, to be honest, I hated the layout so much that I didn't bother to look at many of the prices. I absolutely despise having to turn the thing sideways and read that tiny print to find out how much something costs. And I don't think there was any other info like sizes, fabric content, etc. The thing looks more like a magazine ad than a catalog. Pretty worthless imo. I'm trying to take a wait and see attitude about the pricing. And hoping that they still have some good deals. DS wears big men's sizes and needs a 38 inch inseam in pants - very hard to shop for and we don't find lots of sales. Penney's had become my "go to" place for his clothes. Last summer we stopped off at Penney's on the way to Disney and I got him a few pairs of shorts and several shirts - all for just under $100 cause they were having one of their great sales. I'm really gonna hate it if they don't have those anymore.

I'm with you. My DS wears 3X shirts and they are hard to find. JCP was my go to place and I would get good deals with their sales and coupons. I would also get reward points and then earn the gift certificates. I'm really going to miss getting such good deals. It was about the only place that I shopped for him.

I received the new catalog I also hated it, I did not like the layout colors or prices. I was wondering what was up because I have my eyes on some Naples Grommet panels and they cost $50.00 per panel and I need four panels for my sliding glass door.

I have my %15 off and my $10.00 earned for spending in December. I had been waiting for them to go on sale. I had also noticed no personal coupons had came in the past few weeks.

If they were dropping prices 40% these Panels that I have my eye on would be $30.00 so I will Waite and see.

I noticed that they says the new sales were for the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month not sure what that total means.

The funny thing is I just said how I love the $10.00 off a $25.00 I would go and buy every time for me and my family and felt I did good gob watching our money.

I wanted to share the last time I went into Kohl's I felt they had changed their pricing and they had too many stars clothing with higher prices. I decided Would not be going back so for the last three months I had stuck to JC Penney. Now I am thinking I am getting to a point that the internet stores will be my go to stores this is a bummer as I really liked shopping sales and coupons.

Here is my understanding of the new pricing:

Everyday Prices - red tags - price available to everyone everyday - the regular price, supposedly reduced - NOT! Ex: Nike Shoes $75

Special Prices for the Month - white tags - some items will be recuced to a lower price for the entire month. These items may be seasonal. Ex: the Arizona boys jeans for $17 in February. I have to wonder what the everyday price is on those!

Best Prices - blue tags - these are items not selling well will go on a clearance sale the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month. That's it.

No sales. No coupons. What a terrible strategy. I can not see this helping JCP at all.

I am with you in not thinking that their "new" prices are not that low. I pretty much save all of my shopping for the girls for the end of the year and then stock up on their clearance stuff. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to do that as well as before.

Other stores like Aeropostale, Kohls, Old Navy and Rue 21 will be our new favorites I guess.

I never shopped at JCP very much, but I haven't been in ours since Kohl's opened, nobody can beat them on sales most of the time.

We went to JCP yesterday and and their new prices are quite good, IMO. We bought some great kids clothes on clearance and their new prices fo everyday needs, like socks & underwear were reasonable.

I went in a week ago and the price conversion had already occurred.

The jeans we routinely pay $12.99-15.99 a pair for are now $20.
Sweatshirts I bought for around $20 at Christmas are now $40.
I also saw $75 for tennis shoes.

Kohls, here I come. JCP won't get a dollar from me with those prices.

This is exactly what I did with mine about 10 minutes ago. Who has time for that? We shop at Penney's alot but usually with a coupon & on sale. If they are getting rid of those things we will hardly (if at all) shop with them.

The stores have changed also. I too loved getting the coupons in the mail and would use them on clearance. We went a couple weeks ago with big January clearance signs all over but there were no signs on the racks. They used to have the signs on all racks showing what the prices were but now you have to look at the tags. The same skirt I bought in Dec for $15 was now $36?:scared1: I went back last weekend and it was $20. I don't know what they are doing now but unless the prices go lower then I won't be back very much especially with no more coupons.

I always get my DS the Arizona jeans since he was a slim and they are hard to find slim, with the tabs to pull. I usually always pay $17 when on sale.

I actually liked the catalog, loved the colors!

Macy's is my store I love, always find good deals, but with no Macy's in Myrtle Beach I seem to shop more at JC Pennys for me.

The $10 off $25 coupons drew me in every time! Whether I "really" needed something or not, I FOUND a reason to use that coupon. :rolleyes1 I was just there today & I think we are finished with JCP. It's a shame, because they were my "go-to store" for birthday presents, Christmas presents, hair products, & clothes. Oh well. I will find a replacement for them! Shopping is my challenge & I am a conqueror. ;)

They have been redoing all the JCP in my area (central NJ). I keep seeing those terrible commercials with everyone screaming about getting coupons. Sorry, I love coupons.

I had a $10.00 off $10.00 coupons that expired 1/31 so I went yesterday to use it. I could not find anything I liked or wanted. I felt the prices were very high - I figured with the $10.00 I could get some undies or maybe some PJ. Nothing in that department was on sale. Winter PJ were not on sale - I found a few but the prices were $38.00 or $42.00 - not my idea of a good price.

I will miss the coupons but I do not think I will be shopping there too much any more. My DH is tall so that was always one place I could get tall shirts and longer length pants but we will have to see as time goes on.

Penneys has agreements with manufacturers including Nike, that they can't run that much of a discount. So maybe before they were $80 and on sale for $70 now the price will be $75. Not to say they couldn't be marked down on clearance before.

Companies can't keep running sales on top of sales on top of sales. Not a good way to stay in business!

Personally I think this stinks. Both of my DD's developed a bit early, and the girls plus dept helped with the curves (if you know what I mean ;) ). It was really the only place I could find girls plus and my husbands 3X t shirts, jeans, etc.

If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear of any other places with a plus or big mens dept.

I buy my husbands 3X stuff there also. I just checked online, and a quarter zip sweater from Joseph Abboud(sp?) is best price at $18. I bought the same one for $24.99. For him at Christmas. Did I have a coupon or extra % off? Probably. But I would absolutely buy another one for $18. Thats not bad. And I don't have to worry when I go to get it, do I have a coupon? Did my coupon expire? If I wait will they still have my size?

I had a $15 off $15 coupon, so my DH and I went to JCP tonight. He was able to get two Adidas shirts for $8 each and a pair of Adidas shorts for $20.

Not too bad, but for us, the verdict's still out!

I haven't noticed any changes in our JCP stores in this area yet. Went this past week-end and they had tons of clearance racks with $3-$10 on the ends of them. I wasn't looking for much, and wasn't in the mood to browse so didn't even buy anything. There was lots of kids things too. Don't know about their Spring-Summer stuff as didn't look. I have been getting lots of $10 coupons the last several months, also some $10 off $25 ones, but don't do a lot of shopping there. I go to TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Ross's a lot - seem to do much better. Sometimes with a 30% discount plus clearance & sales, I go to Kohls, otherwise I don't bother with them as their 50% off prices are really reg. prices elsewhere.

Correct, but they wouldn't be a part of a typical " deep discount" sale at Penneys. And certain styles would be excluded from coupons as noted in the fine print. I buy Nike shorts there for boys and they were normally $25 on sale for $19.99. But unless they were clearanced, they didn't go much lower than that. You could use the coupons on those though.

I'm keeping an open mind. I just want to know I'm getting a good price for whatever I'm buying without having to deal with remembering which days of the week coupons are good for.

obviously this is a business decision so i am guessing the screaming people in the ads was also the way the employees felt :lmao:. sales take companies lots of time. time to decide how much they have, how much they need to sell, what price will people buy at, time to move the merchandise, time to mark tickets/signs, time to update the registers, time to manually fix the register/deal with complaints. i love a good sale but i know on the flip side companies hit a point where it is just not profitable, people only stopping in to get stuff practically free are not the consumers that keep you ticking (and yes i am one of those people at some stores so no judgement there). ikea works on a model like this, decent quality, a commitment to keep prices low, and only run a handful of promotions. same with trader joes, no fancy sales or crazy couponing. works for them so maybe jcpenny is trying that route. i have gotten some really good deals on home goods from pennies so i will have to wait and see if it is worth it to keep shopping there.

I don't use coupons but I don't scream if I see some. Weird advertising.

However I do plan to check out JCP once this kicks in. I haven't shopping there in many years but I'm interested in the Friday sales.

Yes, but Trader Joe's actually has low prices.

If JC Penney doesn't (there isn't one here so I dunno from) with their new strategy, people won't buy the stuff.

Though I think Kohl's is expensive (and mostly utter crap), so I can't quite figure why people shop there, except that a perpetual 40% off sign on every single thing in the store makes people think stuff is cheap even if it's not, heh.

I mean i am (was) a big shopper at JCP, but i dont have their charge card....I am mostly a clearance shopper..that means when after the winter / summer when they pink stickers were $9.97,.$5.97, $2.97.
..I bought lots and lots of clothing...My hubby and i have a ministry, nothing official mind you,our own $$ and we provide new clothes to families on a regular basis.
They.... JCP have also let go a number of older workers who have been there for years...
I feel the price looks like something out of Wal mart and there will be no prices listed above the merchandise...
No more coupons except for the survey coupon u can use every 30 days. Today i shopped at Macys and TJMaxx!!

In my market, Macy's tried this exact same strategy ("everyday low pricing" and no coupons) about a year ago -- it failed MISERABLY. Within 3 months they started issuing coupons again. Shoppers in some markets are coupon-averse, and in other markets people love them; one-size fits all marketing does NOT work for national department stores.

I predict that Penneys will quickly re-adopt coupons, but that you will see lasting changes in HOW they will issue them. I suspect that you won't see nearly as many printed ones coming in the mail; they will probably start sending them as text-messaged QR codes or as printable email coupons instead; that is a lot less expensive for them. Also, you will probably see less signage in stores; the layoffs are going to get rid of most of those people whose job was largely changing signage.

As for Kohl's, I don't usually buy their house-brand clothing items any longer; I found that the fabrics tended to have serious shrinkage and colorfastness issues. I will still buy name-brands there, but not the less-expensive house brands. Penneys' house brands tend to be much better quality, I find.

I worked for the corporate office for a few years (although I left 7 years ago and things do change) I can tell you certain companies would not let us cut their prices without their prior approval. It was very common that we would have to disqualify Nike and NFL from our promo sales. Not always. but more often than not they were not included. We of course would have Nike on sale often but at a set price they agreed to and not under the blanket promo.

This could be the issue you are having. Brands like Arizona, St Johns, and Worthington are much more likely to be included in this blanket promo because JCP controls those prices.

I bought most of my childrens clothing form JCP, but I will not be doing that any longer. The pricing policy is beyond anything that makes sense. I hope they only do this for a fwe months before they change back. If not, they have lost a dedicated customer.

the point was that they were going to lower prices so they didn't "need" coupons. Everything I checked today is the same price as yesterday.

This monthly pricing would just make me check the website less often. :confused3

And that new logo? Boring...

Just my 2 cents:
1) they are trying to be the Walmart of department stores where the price marked is the price. No guessing when you go to pay.
2) it will help spread out the business and not be just a Wednesday and Saturday store to shop at
3) the deep clearance price shopper are not the target consumer that any store wants to count on for staying in business
4) personally, I like to go shopping on the spur of the moment sometimes and like the fact I should not need to worry if I am missing a better price because I may have missed taking a coupon with me. I almost always have a list of things I need and normally only get to shop when I find some spare time and often I can't plan a shopping trip. This pricing thing could be good for someone like me. If the base prices are good like they are implying.

I was in our local JCP just last week and bought from the new clearance stuff. Got DS 4 pairs of pants, 2 sweatshirts, 2 longsleeve t-shirts and 1 pr of winter pjs for $51.00. So 4 outfits and a pr of pjs. I think that is a good deal! I liked the price points for the clearance racks. Made it much easier to approximate what I was spending. Everything was neat and organized for clearance so that was great.

The regular prices are pretty high for little kids stuff so I never really shopped there for kids clothes. I really don't want to spend $42 for a pair of khakis for a 5 year old who outgrows them in a few months! I usually shop at Sears or Target for the kids clothes.

I also shop sales, clearance and coupons. If I need something and go there and they are too expensive then I won't buy anything. A few months we will know what will happen. IF sales don't go up, then I am sure coupons or sales will start again. It is all about their bottom line. Time will tell.

I'm a fairly frequent Penney's shopper. I was there on Sunday and only shopped for myself but I thought the new prices were great. I picked up two sweaters for myself that were $14 each. I would have expected to pay $25 - $30 for them under their old prices. Like one of the previous posters, I shop when it's convenient for me and I hated having to deal with the coupons all the time. I felt like I was drowning in them. We'll see how the prices hold going forward, but so far I'm pleased.

I went to JCP this morning and I have to say I wasn't impressed by the every day prices. I guess I consider myself a smart shopper so I always waited for their sales and combined them with coupons.

Their every day price on boys PJs is now $15--I can get Pjs at The Disney Store for $13 not on sale! I used to be able to get their PJs on sale for around $11 plus stack a $10 off $25 coupon on top of my total purchase.

Infant/toddler top & bottom separates I used to get on sale for 2 for $10 plus stack coupons on top...now they are $6 each.

Socks & underwear packs started at $9...can get cheaper at Target.

I think this new pricing strategy will be liked by people who were not strategic shoppers before. They need something, they go and get it. Now the prices will be more clear. But for the more strategic shoppers, who knew when the best sales were and only shopped with a coupon on top, the prices will be higher and therefore not as attractive.

No help if you want a brick and mortar store, but if you're OK with shopping online, have you tried King Size Direct (http://www.kingsizedirect.com/)? My dad and brother run tall and big, (6'4" and over) and it's been a life saver for my mom. She's found winter coats that actually fit, pants that hold up, shoes, etc.

Won't help with your girls, but might give it a try for your hubbie. And they have specials/codes/coupons. :goodvibes

I buy clothing for my little one a size or two in advance of where she is. She just is sliding into 24 mo/2T clothing, so I have started to focus my efforts now on purchasing her 3T clothing. We don't need a lot of winter clothing down here in Florida, so I have been hitting the clearance sales.

I was working up my list of what I wanted from JCPenney when I heard about the new pricing structure that was coming. It's similar to what Macy's tried and saw fail miserably a few years ago. I am not digging the new pricing on the toddler clothing at all. Basically, the prices did not drop, if anything in some instances, they actually rose. I am not happy to be losing the deals that I used to get on their clearance, but I found a couple of other department store websites from up north that I guess will be taking their place now.

I don't wish the company any ill will, but I really hope this falls flat on it's face and things return more to normal.

I actually liked the catalog, loved the colors!

Macy's is my store I love, always find good deals, but with no Macy's in Myrtle Beach I seem to shop more at JC Pennys for me.

My DS12 also wears slims, and we were able to buy Wrangler jeans at Walmart.com for him; they weren't available in the store. I think they were around $17 also. I haven't bought from JCPenneys in years, although I did used to like to read their catalog.

I like to shop JCPenney on-line. So I was looking for capris and shorts. Great they have some on sale, I thought. Okay the first pair I looked at they did not have in the color I chose even though that color came up. Then I chose another pair to look at - size 4, not. Chose another pair - only available in plus sizes. Another pair - only available in Talls. So I guess if you are looking for regular misses sizes you are out of luck? Did they also cut down on their inventory when they started this new pricing system? :surfweb:

I just went online to JCP online and looked at the men, kids and women section. Honestly, the pricing looks extremely affordable. How much lower do they really need to go?

$10 shirts, $7 for a pack of socks, $20 robe, $10 pj bottoms, $14 belt. That's already really low. It seems like Jcpenny was always sending out coupons and advertisements. I think they should cut back on coupons but not totally get rid of them. Didn't they send out $10 off $10 coupons? I'm guessing they got tired of people coming in and only spending exactly $10. Here's the link I'm looking at:

Today was my first experience shopping at Pennys since the pricing chance.
Immediately, I felt out of my shopping "element". But I had 2 $10 reward cards to use so I wasn't giving up.

I bought a St. John's tee shirt for $7.xx, a gorgeous MIX-IT necklace for $11, a genuine sterling silver and turquise ring for $10. After my 2 reward cards, I spent less than $8.00. I do believe I would have paid no more with the old pricing.

Let me start by telling you I LOVE TO SHOP, I love a great sale, I'm all about the "coupon" and I head straight to the CLEARANCE rack, always.

I started at purses (my obsession)- prices were pretty good, I have to admit.
Went over to Womens and what was usually "clearance" now was marked a little differently, but the prices were definetely reduced. Went by all the other clothing in that department and thought the prices were absolutely lower than what was the "regular" price. And I did notice the simple plain tees that I bought (and loved) last year were at a "reduced" price. I did not see that right away on the sign. Now that I know that, I will know better next time to look more closely. Then onto jewelry. Same thing there, the jewelry was definetely priced less than what was the regular price and the "clearance" jewelry was just marked differently.

I'm a big LIZ CLAIBORNE shopper and their merchandise was marked at what would be a "sale price".;);)

I still love the merchandise, I'm going to continue to shop at Penny's and I think I can get used to the new pricing system.

Well I for one am liking it. Visited one store last night and while I only ended up with one pair of pants it was not due to the price, but rather my picky nature and fit. LOL. Picked up a pair of Liz Claiborne brand khaki pants that where regular $22 and on the February sale for $17. Both very reasonable prices IMO.
Visited another store today and bought some work out clothes. The shirts where only $10 and the Capri length pants only $14. I thought they where very good prices and did not feel like I was missing a deal for doing impulse shopping.

I went to get my haircut at the JC Penney salon last week. My 20.00 haircut is now 34.00!!!! My stylist told me to blame the new CEO.

I haven't compared much clothing because we don't really shop there for clothes but the things I have looked at have been mixed. I've been buying the Shari lace curtains one room at a time as we finish painting and decorating, and the new everyday price is comparable to what I was getting them for by combining a coupon and a sale before. The lamps I just bought, on the other hand, look to be $2 and $4 more than I paid on sale with a coupon.

It seems like the best "new lower prices", at least in the home store, are on Penney's exclusive brands. The name brand stuff is no cheaper than anywhere else and will actually end up being more expensive without sales or coupons to bring down those regular prices.

Will JC Penney credit card holders still get rewards/coupons?

Commercials are so annoying I'm not even going to check the pricing. Just like I might consider a kia if not for the stupid hip hop hamsters.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to find the commercials annoying. Who wants to see/hear people screaming? Not to mention they show someone upset by the coupons, yet I've heard they are still going to send them out ot JCP card holders. Hypocrtical much?

I do want to go in and check it out for myself, but when I was at the mall Friday my shopping buddy didn't want to, so we skipped it. And headed to Old Navy instead.

Our local Kohls has just started to carry big and tall. Not a huge selection, but it is there. I can't help you with the girl's stuff. I know what you mean, girls plus sizes are very hard to come by.

I was in our "local" store yesterday to pick up my kids portraits (they do a great job!) and checked out the bed sheets as I loved their microfiber ones. The full size is listed as everyday price $19.99 which is great! Pretty sure the old price was regular $29.99 and I got 2 sets last year on sale for $24.99 each! They are really soft sheets so I might pick up some more for the kids beds in twin size.

Also got a pair of denim capris for my self marked on "clearance" for 9.00. It's winter here so these are just in time for spring this year, and alos got a shirt for $6 and and a hooded zip up sweatshirt for $10 so 3 items for myself for $25. The quality is much better than what I usually see/get at wWalmart so I got great deals in my opinion. :woohoo:

I was at my JCP store last night to pick up bathing suit bottoms and they were practically out - I couldn't find the exact size and style I was looking for so I purchased a few other styles.

As I looked around, I wasn't impressed with their new pricing at all! That may be fine for people who buy straight off the rack and don't look for sales, but it won't work for me who combines sales/clearance items with coupons to get the best price possible. I'll continue to shop at Kohl's. From all the commercials I was expecting WAY MORE, but it was just hype.

:scared1: Wow that's a huge increase!

I love their curtain window treatment selection. I will be checking that out soon and report back.

There will still be coupons for JCPenney card holders. And the $10 JCP rewards coupons will still come in the mail (or email) for those who are signed up on the program.

My boss's dh works for TJ Maxx corporate. She pointed out they never have sales and do quite well.

Personally I'm glad JCP is doing away with all the sales. When I need something, I shop.

I really don't like Kohls. Their selection is terrible and the prices are all over the place. I really dislike the $10 off a future purchase. I loved JCP however when you got $10 off that purchase.

I don't use store cc so Kohls sales aren't all that great.

I'm hoping that the new JCP strategy works out.

DS is taking a class in school and the reason they did this was because macys and kohls always come out with the best sales and they are sick of being underpriced.I was in there the other day and all i can tell you is that if it keeps going the way it is i won't be a customer at all anymore and i will close my cc acc.

Went shopping last night and found GREAT deals! Bought 2 pair of pants for DS7 for $7 each and a long-sleeved Mario t-shirt for $5. Got 3 short-sleeved t shirts for myself for $7 each. I admit that I wasn't impressed with the catalog and loved getting those $10 reward coupons, but the prices did seem lower to me yesterday compared to before.
